Anyone editing Canon HF S20 files w/PP-CS5?

I'm just waiting to receive a Canon HF S20 camcorder that I ordered online and wonder if there are any folks here who have edited that camera's files using PPro CS5?

I think the link I provided describes the setting I am using right now... which I **think** is 60i (my night to cook dinner, and timer just buzzed)
I would shoot at HD instead of SD... my experience shows WONDERFUL quality when I tell PPro to export as DV AVI Widescreen and I then import that into Encore for DVD authoring
But... test and see what YOU like... and do that testing BEFORE you are in a time crunch due to a customer deadline !!!!!

How do I process Canon G15 Raw files in Photoshop CS5?

Hi - I have Photoshop CS5 and I'm having trouble processing Canon G15 Raw files. I downloaded the most recent Camera Raw converter but it didn't seem to wrong. I suspect I'm doing something wrong in the installation process. Thanks!!

The G15 needs Adobe Camera Raw version 7.3 or higher. Unfortunately CS5 can’t be updated beyond ACR 6.7. But it is possible to download and install the free DNG converter to convert your CR2 files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the DNG files will open in CS5 (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)

Editing Canon Rebel T3i files in FCP 5

I'm a newbie to FCP and shoot videos with a Canon Rebel T3i. Obviously, I can copy the .mov files from the SD card to my Mac and edit in Final Cut Pro 5, but it's a bear (slow rendering time and whatnot) and I'm never impressed with the video quality output once I'm done rendering. Specially, the files I am trying to work with now are in 1280x720 format, 60 fps.
Here are some questions/scenarios:
1. Can I import my video files straight from my SD card into Final Cut Pro 5 (seeing as I only have Log and Capture and not Log and Transfer)?
2. Can I use Compressor or some other program to convert my files to a more FCP-friendly file?
3. What setting must I use in FCP to import my HD files and export them as HD files?

1. Yes, but you won't be happy working with it.
2. Yes, and that would be whatever HD editing codec you have in your QT library…hopefully Pro Res 422.
3. Some flavor of 720p60. (I don't have 5.1, so I can't be more specific.) The sequence settings should be Frame size: 1280X720 frame size, Pixel AR: square, Field Dominance: None.
I'd use a card reader and copy everything to a media drive. Then transcode (MPEG STreamclip is faster than Compressor). Then import.

My nephew has this camera and video files from past use. He is having problems imprting them into his new iMac. I searchd Internet for himand found several articles on how to import from the Canon camera. I am seeking somene's actual experience in doing this.

Question about camera raw. Need to edit Canon 60D Raw files in CS5.

I downloaded the program camera raw. folder could not find the installer program. I do not know how to install the camera raw.in the past with these programs had no problems. what version of the program is suitable for Photoshop cs5 and camera canon 60d?

canon eos 60D needs cr 6.2 or better.
ps cs5 can be updated to 6.7 so you should be ok.
the best way to update is to click help>update in photoshop.

Unable to open Canon 650D Raw files in PS CS5 [was:Camera Raw]

I have tried to downlaod my raw files CR2 to my photoshop cs5 but it keep saying
"Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of camera raw."
My camera model is Canon 650d which is supported and i have downloaded the latest raw update but everytime i go to the Help > About Plug in
it keep saying that my version is 6.3.0.79

The 650D requires Camera Raw 7.1 or higher.

Thus you must either upgrade to CS6 or CC or convert your Raw files to DNGs using the free Adobe DNG converter. Then open and edit the DNG files in CS5.

Not able to open Canon 6D raw file in PS CS5! Can i Upgrade from CS5 to CS6?

I recently purchased the Canon 6D. I'm running Photoshop CS5 on my windows computer. I want to work in Camera Raw but I need version CS6 in order to do so. I'm having great difficulty getting a link to purchase the upgrade. I need help, please.

I just want to point that out for ACR is the reason I signed up for the cloud. Which actually lowered my cost of Photoshop. I had always upgraded to Photoshop standard to get ACR. So Photoshop cost me the initial cost of Photoshop standard $700 and around $100 a year for upgrading.   Now Photoshop cost $120 a year but it for the extended version of Photoshop and I could also Lightroom if I wanted.
Some day maybe I will need Lightroom.   Adobe keep changing Photoshop removing features like Web Galleries and Picture Package, Add things to the Adobe Bridge like poorer Web Galleries and the export panel where panel convert image files to jpeg without opening Photoshop. Add features like Oil Painter to Photoshop then removes Oil painter make Bridge output module an optional download removes the export panel from the Bridge and put an export feature in Ligthroom.
ACR is well integrated into Bridge as a plug-in and in Photoshop as a plugin and filter. Bridge also works well with other Adobe Applications according to some thing I have read. Lightroom on the other hand is not well intergrated with Adone Applications like Photoshop. Lightroom can use external programs like Photoshop to enable users to edit image in ways the Lightroon can not however the image files then are not compatible with lightroom   you would need to save flatten image file to use with lightroom and loose your work layers. I don't waste my disk space with lightroon and it huge library database system. I don't run a Photography Business I'm a retired men of leisure...

Hey there. I'm using Photoshop CS5.1 Extended Version 64 Bit. I want to work with raw pictures, shot on a Canon 6D. I have to install the camera raw plug in. But It doesn't work. Could somebody help me please? It's very important too know it soon.

Cannon 6D requires a minimum of ACR 7.3. If you are using Photoshop CS5.1 i would advice you to use the Adobe DNG converter to convert the images and then use it in Photoshop.

Canon 7D MOV files = horrible editing in Premiere Pro CS4?

Hi All,
I just got Premiere Pro CS4 in the mail today. I was so excited to start cutting up my Canon 7D MOV files but it seems the MOV files play horribly in Premiere.
I looked around a little on the forum and found some others feel the same way (as well as the 5D users).
Surely I won't have to use quicktime to preview my videos. The previewer in Premiere can barely play the files.
So, what is everybody doing these days to get a smoother work flow?
I don't want to have to do a lot of pre-editing (didn't Adobe think of this before claiming it's compatible with Canon 7D/5D files?)
Also, when starting a NEW SEQUENCE, what PRESETS should I use? I record in 60fps. So AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) Anamorphic?? (what a long name!)

How to open Canon 70D Raw files in PSE9? [was:Raw upgrade]

Can someone help? I have just bought a Canon 70D but my copy of Photoshop Elements 9 won't read the raw files. It was OK with the raw files from my 450D. I have tried downloading the upgrade to raw 6.5 (although I'm not sure that is what will solve it) but when I try to do so Internet explorer can't cope and my computer flashes on and off until I have to hard boot. I would like to just submit this question to Adobe but I can't find a way to do so! (I have tried)

The EOS 70D was first supported by Camera Raw 8.2 (current version).

PSE9 is only compatible with Camera Raw up to version 6.5 - so PSE9 won't open your Raw files

So you either need to upgrade to PSE12 (to open and edit the Raw 70D files in PSE)
or convert your Raw files to DNGs using Adobe's free DNG converter then edit the DNG files in PSE9.

Canon CRW Raw files not supported in Preview, Nikon supported

With Panther and Jaguar, Canon RAW files in crw format were supported in Preview. In Tiger, these files are not. Also, when importing these files from camera or CF reader, canon raw files tagged with .thm! What is this? an 8 kb "document" that renders file corrupt. Did not happen in Panther or Jaguar. And the problem is NOT my camera because it works fine on Windows PC and on previous OS mac.
here's the kicker: Nikon NEF raw format is NOW supported by Preview, but was NOT supported in Panther and Jaguar.
So, I called AppleCare and they say NO raw formats should be supported by Preview.
Another example of how Apple has lost compatibility and quality control?
Anyone else who uses RAW files in photography have same experience?

The easiest way to edit plist files is with Property List Editor, which you get installed if you install the Developer stuff that comes with your OS install disks. If you don't want to add all that stuff your computer, it is possible to edit with a a straight text editing program in plain text. Personally I find that too confusing. I put a copy of my edited Raw.plist file up:

It has the substitution of the S50 for the original S60. It also lists the S70, so your Canon S70 should be working. If it isn't working either, then this hack won't help you. Download and unzip the file.
Because of permissions--you aren't supposed to be mucking about in this area--the easiest way to proceed is using the Terminal. The path is, unfortunately, extremely long. You open the System folder, then the Library folder, then Frameworks, ApplicationServices.framework, then Versions/A/Frameworks/ImageIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources. You should now see a list of files that includes the Raw.plist file. Leave that Finder window open.
Launch Terminal from your /Applications/Utilities folder. If you have never used it, nor ever used a sudo command you will get a friendly warning when you issue the first command. We want to make sure that the original file doesn't get lost. So type:
sudo mv
and a space, then drag the Raw.plist file into the Terminal and drop it. The Terminal will helpfully fill in the path. Add a space, then copy the path up to the file name and paste, then type RawOld.plist as the new file name and hit the Return key. You'll need to type your password, which is NOT echoed to the screen, so type carefully and hit the return key again.
Next you want to add the modified Raw.plist file to the folder. Using a sudo copy command will insure that it belongs to system. So type
sudo cp
add a space and drag the new Raw.plist file into the Terminal window. Paste in the path to the folder (it should still be on the clipboard) hit return, give your password and hit return again. I don't remember whether it was necessary to restart the Finder or not. You might want to do a restart and then Repair Permissions, just to be on the safe side.

IPhoto choking on canon 30D raw files

Tried to run a pro shoot through iPhoto but it appears to be choking on Canon 30D raw files (.cr2 extension). I'm getting an assortment of odd problems (missing or oddly rendered images, saves that never finish, sliders that take 30 seconds to move; times when moving the white balance slider has no visible impact on the photo) that basically have left me scratching my head about iPhoto (at least with Canon 30D raw). I was using features like Duplicate and saving edited raw files as TIFF but those are all documented features and so I would expect them to work properly.
Is anyone successfully using iPhoto with 30D raw files?
I have Aperture and it works great with the same set of raw files but iPhoto is so quick and easy (which saves time but also means that it's easier to get other team members involved in the workflow) that it's tempting to use it at least as the front-end for selects and preliminary development. Or maybe iPhoto is just for jpegs at the end of the day even though it does seem to have a fairly capable raw converter?

Tried to use with Lieca Raw also errors.

Canon HF S20 Capture

I guess my first question should be is if anyone has heard of a problem capturing from the Canon HF S20.
It's been a while since I've been to FCE so I'm a little rusty but I've just purchased this camera and while my Mac can connect to the camera and see the files, FCE does not see it for capturing. I'm connected via USB. Canon support was not able to help. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Select the application in the Applications folder and press Cmd-I. Info will give you the version number. It will also display in column view in the browser. It will display in About FCE in the FCE menu. It will display on the splash screen during startup.
Have you read the section in the manual on log and transfer? What problem are you having?

Canon Vixia HF20 file import

Hi,
I just got a Canon Vixia HF20 AVCHD camcorder, but didn't think to see if it was compatible with Mac.
Does anyone have this camcorder and know how to get the video files transferred into the mac from it? I can mount the drive on my mac, but cannot find any video to import, although I know there is some on there? I have Final Cut Studio which I am going to try to use this with-

What brings me back is that I got the canon HF 20 and used the importing method you mentioned below. But the files are ridiculously huge. I have cleared most of the 250 GB of space on my computer just to import and burn a DVD of a 1:18 piece.
Would I be able to get an external drive (I'm using a new mac pro 15" laptop) to import the files into and edit with, so I don't take up all my space on my computer? Or is there another method you might be able to suggest to import, edit and export these files?

Loss of details / sharpness in H.264 export (Canon HF S20)

I'm using a Canon Legria HF S20 camera for about £1000
(PAL version, on the iMovie '11 compatibility list:

Setup: MXP Mode 1920x1080 (24Mbps), PF25 Progressive shooting mode (25p)
1. When playing the original mts file using VLC in 1920 x 1080,
details look sharp (here is a cropped frame section, 1:1):
2. After importing the clip from the camera into iMovie (without
stabilization) I played the mov file ('Reveal in Finder') in QuickTime X:
the quality was *a bit worse* (cropped the same frame section):
Is the full source quality (24Mbps) preserved in that imported file (AIC) or was the
quality already limited by 4Mbps to 20Mbps (iMovie default export quality)...?
3. Without any editing I exported the video via 'Share/Export movie...' - the
result was a mov file of *low quality* due to missing details/sharpness (same section):
Then I tried 'Share/Export using QuickTime...' and set the bit rate to
24000kbps but that made no difference. Maybe some settings were wrong?

the f just indicates each frame is stored in two fields, just like interlaced

In the meantime I received an answer from Canon customer service:
We are sorry to learn that you have experienced a problem with your
Canon product. In response to your query about your Legria HF S20,
as you have stated that when playing back the original file, the quality
is as it should be, I regret to inform you that we can not assist on
importing/exporting files in Imovie. If playback of the original file is
properly and also playback on the camera is proper. It indicatest that
some setting in Imovie is causing the change in quality. To my regret
I can only advise you to contact Apple for more support on this matter.
I would say that if the playback of a mts file via VLC looks perfect, that
doesn't necessarily mean that this file is properly formatted according
to 1080/25p. (see my original post)
Is this bad quality really NORMAL for iMovie...? I can't believe it.
Any further advice will be appreciated!
