Anyone else seeing their MBP's shut down due to overheating and no fans?

I have a 2 month old MBP that overheats and locks up when playing World of Warcraft in OS X. The processor temp will get to 100-105 and the MBP locks up and requires a forced hard boot. The fans don't spin up - they stay at 2k.
Also, on the Windows side (64 bit Vista), the upper left hand corner of the chassis gets extremely hot - again no fans spin up.
I have resorted to using smcFanControl to manage the fans in order to prevent overheating. I have seen many people post about this exact same problem on these boards - does anyone have any advice? I am concerned that I am frying the hardware over time!
I called Apple tech support and they say they have no knowledge of this being an issue.

No problem here, at first my fans were stuck at 2k regardless of the temps. I reset the SMC and that (at least for me) fixed the problem.
While I use and advocate the use of smcFanControl, I recommend that you get your laptop repaired (or replaced). Now with that said, there seems to be quite a number of threads of WOW users who complain about the heat being generated from using that game and likewise, it seems pretty evident that using Vista means your laptop will be running hot for what ever reason.
If your fans are not ramping up beyond 2k in OSX, then that's not right, if its running hot in vista or playing WOW then that might be another issue.

  • Anyone else seeing their audio changing between sessions?

Something that's extremely annoying that has been happening to me in FCP X for a while now and I haven't figured out what's causing it: I setting my audio to -6 db throughout my project and then days or even weeks later, when I fire it back up, the audio is no longer pegging at -6db. It's usually lower. So if I go and change an attribute on that clip, the audio snaps back to where it was before. It's crazy.
    I'm using the Limiter effect.
    Anyone else getting this behavior?
    Thanks

Yep, just fired up my feature film that I went through and perfected the audio levels a couple weeks ago and now they are all screwed up. The levels are not what they were two weeks ago.
Maybe this is a Limiter effect bug.

  • Mac mini appears to be shutting down due to overheating fan is running, but not strongly

late 2012 mac mini shuts down after running several minutes in a streaming task environment.  Fan is running, but not very forceful.  wondering if the fan itself has a temperature sensor that causes the fan to engage in higher rpms or if that sensor/command comes from somewhere else in the computer

Install a temperature/fan speed app.. I use the free Macs Fan Control app downloaded from the internet. Yes, there are temperature sensors that contorl fan speed

  • Macbook Pro i5 2.4Ghz shutting down due to overheating

I recently upgraded my 5yr old Macbook Core Duo to a nice, shiny new Macbook Pro i5 2.Ghz. I'm absolutely in love with it in every way possible except for one issue I'm having:
When I play Company of Heroes on Windows 7, I've had the Macbook shut down three times so far. After the first time, I felt the area just above the F1 / F2 keys and it was extremely hot to touch. I downloaded CoreTemp and Hardware Monitor to test for temperatures and discovered the Macbook is set to auto-shutdown once CPU temperatures reach 105C.
Is this normal? I've had the Macbook for four days now and wondering if this is a common problem. I've since gone out and bought a Coolermaster NotePal U2 notebook cooler, but I am a little reluctant to do any heavy gaming on this now.
Should I take this in to an Apple Service Center to be checked?
Just to clarify, in an airconditioned room with ambient temps of 24.5C, using the Coolermaster stand, the Macbook is idling with temps of:
    CPU #0 53C
    CPU #1 57C
    Low 50C
High 97C (during Company of Heroes 5 mins ago)
    Thanks in advance

Hardware Monitor had them running at 5517 rpm or something close to that. Perhaps Windows 7 has less effective power / fan management than Snow Leopard, I don't know. I've been wanting to try out a game from Steam for OSX so I may post back with more results.
What I'm worried about is the fact that it is shutting down at all. Safety mechanism or not, I would rather my computer not shut itself down while I'm in the middle of doing something.
Just on a side note, I found that sliding the Macbook down off the rubber pads on the Coolermaster stand so that the bottom vent is directly over the fans of the stand dropped the idle temps in OSX to 36C. Pretty impressive. If the Macbook is placed as it is shown in the instruction card (on the rubber pads) the idle temp goes up to 41C.

  • Tecra S3: Notebook shuts down due to overheating

Whenenver I run CPU-intensive processes on my laptop, the computer's base and the table become untouchably hot and the laptop shuts down without any warning after a certain time.
    What can I do?

    Hi Kersten
May I ask you how long do you use this notebook??? Did this issue appear in the past???
Mostly such overheating problems happen and are present because the cooling modules dont work properly the dust and debris inside the notebook prevents the fans from rotation with full performance this rises the temperature to the critical level and the notebook shuts down automatically to prevent the hardware from damage.
So in such case its advisable to check the cooling modules and to clean it. The vacuuming could help but be careful such procedure could damage the fans!!!
So maybe you will ask a technician or a Toshiba service partner for a help and for a professional cleaning
    good luck

  • Older Mac Mini Shuts Down due to Overheating

After researching this issue extensively and trying every suggestion, I finally began placing icepacks underneath my Craig'slist purchased Mac Mini to keep it cool. I must also keep the blinds shut to minimize solar heating and sometimes run the ceiling fan in my office. I also must watch the temp on SMC FanControl to make sure it does not rise above 130°. I'm now looking for an external cooling fan which I hope will keep this situation more permanently under control. Does anyone know of a good one? Remember, external fan, not internal. My hardware info is :
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: Mac mini
    Model Identifier: Macmini2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MM21.009A.B00
    SMC Version (system): 1.19f2
    Serial Number (system): YM824031YL2
    Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0016CBB0A806

To diagnose this, one really needs to know if the Mini's internal fan speeds up (and gets noisy) before the thermal shutdown occurs.
Not sure why you brought up "liquid cooling systems": the Mini has a standard CPU heatsink. There is no liquid cooling anywhere in the Mini.
Sometimes the contact between the CPU and heatsink gets compromised and the Mini can no longer keep the CPU cool. This is more likely to have occurred if the Mini has been modified or upgraded by the previous owner.

  • Anyone else see their IAP disappear from ITC?

I created a bunch of IAP for two of my apps the past few days. I go back to check them out today (4/4/2012) and see that the IAP have disappeared. It's as if I never entered them in.

I also had another app that just went live with 5 IAP. When I checked the app in ITC, it showed only 3 out of the 5 apps. I went into my app and purchased one of the IAP that was still in the game that had disappeared from ITC. Turns out the purchase went through and from the end user perspective nothing looked amiss.
But my other two apps, which are not live or submitted yet, still show their IAP completely gone. Hope this gets resolved soon.

  • Anyone else seeing a sudden uptick in SPAM making it through their Ironports?

    Quick question:
We updated our C170 to 8.5.6-092 last week, and since then we've seen a massive increase in SPAM making it through our Ironport undetected.
I've read some updates here re: SBRS and repengine issues after an 8.5.6-092 update, and have investigated these (both are OK) but nonetheless I am curious if others are seeing the same thing.
What I'd like to know is if these are just a new spam campaign that is making it through the Ironport filters, or if we have an actual technical issue after the 8.5.6-092 upgrade that I'm missing.

In general, we're seeing spam with the following characteristics:
    1) many originate from, or contain links to, .link domains
    2) SBRS on these are clear (-1, -2) and gets a pass on the SBRS check
    3) Sample subjects:

    4) Furthermore, many contain .link URL's in the content, and the newly added URLscanning seems to be giving these a total pass, too.
    Some samples: http://signupnow.growingmedicareprovider.link , http://detailshere.largelycarsavings.link etc.
We're playing wack-a-mole with individual rules for subjects and .link domains, i.e. to flag and quarantine these as they come in, but I'd like to know if anyone else seeing this, or just me?

    Hello Bryan,
Ideally for us to diagnose if there is a possible fault in your IronPort or with misconfiguration we would need you configuration file, complete message tracking information and also the actual samples which are passing the device.
Thus i would like to recommend you to open a Cisco TAC case with us so we can be of assistance.
In terms of the information provided (there maybe some other variables to consider as well).
I would suggest firstly running this command on your device if not already done.
    CLI > updatenow force
Let the systems update all services again.
    Continue to monitor.
These server IPs if they continue to send such emails their IP's will hit a blacklist.
However at this point, there are too many variables in place that can affect the scanning of these emails and reasons why they're passing.
    EDIT:
8.5.6-092 revision corrects the SBRS connection that was witnessed in -074 as per the release notes.
    Regards,
    Matthew

  • Upgrade to IOS 6 has caused everything to slow down, noticeably..ANYONE ELSE SEEING THIS PARTICULARLY ON MY MAC

Is anyone else seeing this noticeable slow down?
Ever since the IOS 6 , at least since then, everything slows down and nothing is wrong, just nothing is any where near as fast as it used to be... Other friends who have macs also say the same....
Is there a fix coming or something to restore thiings back to normal.

    Allan,
Just about everything...The internet is slow and I have a very fast FIOS connection 25 up and down....
You click on something, i.e. a bookmark and it takes a while for it to do anything...Dock items seem to react slower to open, it is like it thinking about it before anything happens....
Not sure how to describe it, but several friends have said the exact same thing...even on our Ipads...
    Do you see nothing slower?

  • Anyone else have their iPad hijacked?

Anyone else have their iPad hijacked?  Didn't think it was possible, but I have video of my iPad typing, opening apps, and attempting purchases by itself. I turned off the wifi and it still kept going. Not sure if they were connected to Bluetooth or not because every time I tried to go into settings they would close the window.  I ended up just shutting the whole thing down.  Has anyone ever had anything like this happen to them?

Ghost typing is what you are seeing and I have seen some other people talking about it. You weren't hijacked, there is a problem with your iPad. Or this is the first "documented" case on an iDevice being hijacked.
Do you have a screen protector on the iPad? If so, does it need to be cleaned?
Post a link to the video of you can.

  • MBP unexpectedly shuts down for no reason- help!

MBP unexpectedly shuts down for no reason.
My MBP has been working fine, until I updated to 10.5. Originally this problem started in Bootcamp running XP, but has now done this once in OS X, just a while ago. There seems to be no difference- even when the psu is plugged in. Just now when it did this again, I pressed the power key and the led on the front blinked really fast, then there was a tone- like it was doing a firmware update (but I did the firmware update months ago!).
I've done a power reset- taking out the battery and holding the power key down for 20 seconds, which seems to have helped, but then again this problem seems to be rather sporadic, and one can never tell when it is going to happen next.
Oh yes, there is a mechanical 'click' that sounds when it does it- like a relay click. Is there a relay power related IC on the motherboard?
Any clues anyone? (I'm sending this exact letter to Apple as well)
    Tom

It's an interesting thread, but I seem to have the problem even when the cord is plugged in. I did have battery problems when I first got this MBP, but they seemed to settle down once I used the computer a bit more. FWIW, I have now got them mostly while using Bootcamp. BC beta 1.3 was really stable and good. It wasn't until I bought Leopard that this problem started. And again, it's only happened 3 or 4 times now.
I'll just have to keep saving. I'm sure Apple will wise up to this sooner or later. (Incidently, I haven't been able to send anything to Apple as I can't find their direct contact addie. Can someone 'remind' me? Thanks!

A Safe Mode boot might help ..
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
    See if the problem persists.

  • Anyone else seeing better-than-ever speeds?

I was reconfiguring an old Win XP laptop this evening and when I was about done I ran a test on  speedtest.net to see how the configuration was performing.  I was surprised to see better than ever download speeds.  I ran the same test on my Win 7 desktop machine and got the same results and then almost exactly the same numbers on the FiOS speedtest.
    Speeds were: 43.12 Mb/s down; 31.96 Mb/s up.
I'm paying for 35/20.  I've always seen better than 20 mb/s up but my downstream has always been consonantly right at 35 mb/s.   I'm sure not complaining, but I'm curious.  Is anyone else seeing this spike in downstream?  And can anyone speculate what might be behind it?
edit:  By way of a further test I just download a 699 MB Ubuntu distro file.  The download ran under 2 minutes at a rock solid and steady 5.3 MB/s.  Whew.  I like it.

Yes I was wondering about this too. i am getting over 30mbps download on my 25/25 connection. Good job verizon, you guys are looking like a pretty cool company now.
