Anyone ever tried this?

Question

So I'm trying to create the sound of a sports car engine accelerating using only a synth in Logic. I'm working on a project for which I cannot use any audio samples, only MIDI instruments. I was just going to skip the car engine sound, but thought it might be fun to try get something similar sounding using some synthesizers instead.
I've been playing around with it, but thought I'd see if anyone here might have any ideas.

Try starting out with a triangle synth sound.
Try making the sound like the car is going FULL ON max speed.
Try a plugin like Digidesign's Vari Fi, that slows down or speeds up a sound.
Start by doing the "speed up" process. This will start playing your sound from 0 speed to full on, in the time of the whole sound.
So if you're looking for a 10 second piece, it will sound as if the car speeds up for 10 seconds.
Then, if you need more, simply add the original after the effected sound to taste.
Once you;ve done this, render this file, and use something like Wave's Doppler plugin, to add the movement from left-right, or vice-versa.
And before you say this won't work, hear this:
Depeche Mode "Dream On" intro, from the album "Exciter".
That's how we did it there... somewhat (secret sauce still secret)
