Anyone experiencing poor quality watermarks from Lightroom 3?

Hi all,
I'm working on a project where I need to export hundreds of custom images for use on a website. Each image needs to have a watermark on it. So I created the watermark in Illustrator, then placed it into a 900 pixel x 900 pixel file and saved for web as a PNG-24 with transparency.
When I export images form LR3 using the above graphic as a watermark the image quality is great, but the watermark has rough edges and is pixelated at any setting under 2500 pixels. I need to output down as small as 150, 225 and 250 pixels. I can do this in photoshop and the watermark looks great. Yet from LR the quality is noticably bad. See the attached file.
Anyone have any input on how to improve the quality of the watermark?

Yep, transparent PNG watermarks are downsampled with a very crappy algorithm.
I am afraid there's nothing you can do about it (except, use a third party plugin).

Does anyone experienced bad quality when burning a DVD?
Using OS 10.6.8 and Magiv Video in iDVD, I am having a hard time creating a decent DVD. The videos per se are fine, but the intro menu and menu text and images are extremely poor quality and hard to read. What is going on?

Hi my notes on this - might be of help
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser and as Large (NOT HD or other resolutiona as result will suffer) or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

  • Poor quality exporting from iMovie to iDVD

When I export a dv movie from iMovie to iDVD, the quality drops significantly. A nice clean movie imported from a dv camcorder to iMovie becomes horrible pixelated mess once exported into iDVD and actually burned into a DVD. No matter what quality settings one uses.
It seems like many people experience similar problems, judging by postings (unanswered, as far as I can tell). It also appears that basically everyone using iMovie has this problem, but most people are content with poor quality DVDs, or are they?
Does anyone know why this is so, and if there is any workaround? You know, the simplest way out is to switch to a PC and use one of their standard movie editing software, but isn't Mac supposed to be better for this purpose?

    Hi
    A.
If You included photos into Your movie and used Share/Export to iDVD. iMovie
asks to render the material = Destructive in two ways:
    • Losy iDVD project
    • Original iMovie IS HARMED: Photos needs to be re-imported and re-edited.
    • Re do the import and editing.
    • Close iMovier
    • Open iDVD
    • Drop iMovie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD
    Done.

There are a major difference between a Mac Monitor and a Standard TV (much less
sharpness due to 525 - 625 lines (NTSC or PAL))
I connect my Camera to my Mac (via FW) and analog out to a TV so that I can monitor
the process during iMovie editings. (iMovie preferences set Playback via Camera)

  • Poor Quality Import from Panasonic PV-GS320

I am importing video from a Panasonic PV-GS320 to Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and I always get poor quality video.  The edges of all of the images become jagged when the images move no matter what "easy setup" settings I use.  I have attached a still that shows it.
    I appreciate any ideas.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Well, as Alchroma pointed out earlier, you are editing interlaced source material (correctly) on an interlaced timeline (which is correct), with the correct field dominance.
The problem is that interlaced video simply does not display correctly on computer monitors. Final Cut will supress some of the artifacts that display when you choose any viewer or canvas scale other than 100%. When you set the scale to 100%, the display clearly shows the interlacing.
What is the final use of your video? If it is for DVD, you are doing it correctly, and a DVD made from the source and sequence settings you have should display properly on a TV monitor (not a computer monitor).
If you are viewing the clips via Quicktime, depending on which version of Quicktime you are using, open the Quicktime preferences and make sure "use high quality video settings when avaialable" is checked.
If you are posting your videos on the web, when you convert them to H.264 you can deinterlace the video so that it will look correct when your videos get viewed.

  • Poor quality DVD from Premier Elements 1.0

I've captured 5 short clips from my miniDV camcorder with premier elements. The avi files look like reasonably good quality. When I export to DVD, the 5 minutes of video, the quality is very poor, almost blurry or like it has way too much compression. I exported with the 'fit contents to media' unchecked and the quality setting to High, USA Japan, NTSC.
I took the same clips and burned a DVD from Sonic MyDvd and the quality was much better.
I have the latest premiere Elements 7 on order but I want to know if anyone else has had a similar problem. I seem to remember premiere making better DVDs when I first installed but can't find anything in the settings that has changes.
    Thanks,
    Mike

When recording your video with miniDV, are you shooting in High Definition or Standard?
What project preset are you setting for at the Premiere Elements Welcome Screen/Setup?

  • Poor quality of from FCE to idvd

    Hello All,
We have used iDVD to burn our fce projects. This week we burned a reunion filmed mainly in doors. On FCE the footage looked fine as well as after exporting to QuickTime. Once burned on iDVD and played on a HD tv, the picture is extremely grainy. We switched the tv to standard screen which helps a little, but overall the quality is poor. Even the type on the chapter titles looks blurry. I tried changing the encoding preferences (in iDVD) to professional quality, but couldn't see much difference.
The original footage was filmed in hd and captured at 29.97 fps and hdv-apple intermediate codec 1080i60.
    Any advice would be great.
    Gobble Gobble,
    Jamie

    Jamie,
Please provide a little more information.
    1) How long is your movie, that is what is the play time?
    2) How did you get the movie to iDVD? The best way is to export the movie from FCE as a Quicktime Movie (not Quicktime Conversion). The close FCE and then open iDVD and then go get your movie from with in iDVD.
Also, I hope you realize you had HD material, but iDVD is Standard Definition. How good it looks depends a lot on how well your TV and your DVD player upscale.

  • Poor quality song from Itunes

I just bought a song from itunes and the quality was poor (there was a gap in the middle of the song). Is there a way to get my money back or a better quality download of the song from itunes?

    Go here -> http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/browser/

  • Slow, slow, poor quality streaming from netflix, utube, imdb, etc

My wi-fi appears to be working correctly with full signal strength and fast web browsing, but as soon as I try to stream any tv shows, movies or trailers, there is a considerable lag and the quality of the picture is not great. Are my expectations just too high? I've been steaming HD content thru my xbox 360 with perfect results and I have the fastest download speed available thru my ATT service at home. Anyone else have this problem or a solution?

Let me add a few more details. I had trouble streaming in youtube app and in safari. I had trouble with streaming apple's own videos and from cnn and anything else I could think of. At the same time, other computers on the same network had no problem streaming the same videos.
I also had trouble downloading high-res photos that required sustained transfers on the same network. The photo would start downloading fast then slow to a crawl and sometimes never complete. So it seems like a wifi issue and not just a video streaming issue.

  • Poor quality export from imported mp4 screen capture

My video source is an mp4 file created from a screen capture of a unix app running on a PC. Quicktime plays the mp4 file fine (lots of detail, dark blacks, ...), but the resulting movie (Share > Export Movie > HD 720p) is faded. When shown on a large screen, the movie is pixelated and faded (grey blacks, etc.).
I imported the mp4 file into iMovie (File > Import > Movies) with Fit in Frame, Optimize video unchecked, Widescreen (16/9), and 30 fps NTSC.
I have tried various combinations of import and export settings and the above is the best I get.
I'm guessing the import is throwing half the information away (hence the faded appearance). Whatever the cause, is there a way to import mp4 files into iMovie and get the same quality on the export? I tried exporting the entire import and got a file about half the size.

Your description of the problem - a 'comb' effect - sounds as if the "fields" which make up the resultant picture have been put together in reverse.
(..You don't normally see 'interlaced' video in iMovie's playback window - you normally see just a single field of the two, to make the picture clearer and simpler to display..)
[..A video picture's generally made up of two "fields" which each comprise half the number of lines down the screen: one field comprises the odd-numbered lines, and the other the even-numbered ones. Your exported video should be encoded with the lower (2nd) field first ..as described in this Apple document ..and the problem's mentioned here as well..]
However ..you said in your first post that "..I am using a Sony HDR-HC1 and trying to export at the highest possible settings.."
This is an HDV camcorder, and you didn't say if the original footage which you shot was HDV or normal DV. (HDV is recorded differently from normal DV, as it's recorded in a more compressed format, and it has to be automatically 'unscrambled' by Apple's Intermediate Codec while you're importing it into iMovie HD.)
It seems as if somewhere along the chain of importing>editing>exporting, the fields are being reversed, so that you get this jumpiness on replay when QuickTime tries to deliver a "highest quality" interleaved replay of both fields:
Ah ..sudden thought: you mentioned that you exported thro' iDVD: "..I have used iDVD by dropping it into a DVD theme and it seems to work ok, although the playback is a little jumpy, not quite as good I would have expected.."
You may have left the iDVD settings at their default 'NTSC' instead of switching them to PAL.
Check your iDVD Preferences ..that may be the problem.

  • Anyone experiencing extremely slow downloads from Apple?

For the past 48hrs or so I've been unable to stream or download HD Video from iTunes store or iCloud on any of my devices, Apple TV's or Computers.
Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other HD Streaming services unaffected.  Internet up and running 45Mbps connection, working great. only thing affected is content from Apple, specifically content purchased and on iCloud.  iCloud account fine, Apple ID account fine.  Can access Apple.com, iTunes Store, Apple Store, Communities, and content, however, streaming, downloads extremely slow, almost unresponsive....
Is anyone aware of any slowdown issues, servers down, or other issues affecting access to content?
You know because Apple is always so forthcoming on these issues!
So far Ive found no mention of any issues in any of the communities....
    Thank You.

Apparently Adobe is having server problems. Other users have reported problems today.

  • Poor quality prints from HP 1320n x64 Windows 7

    Hi
I am running CS4 on Windows 7 64bit and I've noticed that b/w prints from my HP Laserjet 1320n is very poor. I typically print screen shots or print single page PDFs to the 1320n. The output is low res and looks like newspaper print magnified several times (halftone printing?)! The prints are still low res even when I change the doc to 300 pixels/inch. However when I print the same docs to my Canon IP4500 inkjet the prints come out perfect. I am not sure if its a problem with CS4 or a HP driver problem. The HP prints without problems from other packages such as MS Word.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
It looks like a driver problem in Windows 7. I removed the HP PCL6 driver and replaced it with the built-in (but older) PCL5 driver in Windows 7 and it seems to have resolved the issue. I compared the two drivers and it seems that PCL6 does not have the 'Printer Features | Graphics Mode | Send Graphics As Vector' mode. This seems to be the crucial setting that allows high res bitmaped graphics and PDF's to be printed properly.
    Thanks.

  • Poor quality video from compressor

This is very basic, so please bear with me. I used  Share from Final Cut Pro X, using mpeg 2 for dvd (I have Compressor installed, but it did this without opening it). Everything renders well, but on playback in QT, the edges of the video are serated, which is quite a let down considering the footage is HD. Can anyone hazard a guess as to what I am doing wrong?
    All best
    Jem

Hey Tom, thanks for that info. I agree about DVD being an attenuating medium, but my parents, 90 and 93, couldn;t really view their grandson on another medium! However, I am still puzzled as to why the image is fine in FCP, but interlacing when compressed for DVD, but I am presuming that this is just the codec.
    All best

  • The poor quality outcome from project to .mov

first of all, here is my spec:
    running on : win 7- 64bit
processor : core i5  [email protected]
    RAM: 4GB approximately
graphic card: ATI Radeon HD 4600 series 1GB
    BIOS: version: 08.00.15
using AE CS5, installed with quicktime 7.7, K-lite 7.5.8(update version)
well, the problem is when i was add my project to render queque, the video quality is very good, however the sound is horrible
it's kinda some lag on it whenever i played it with several different video player.
Moreover, when i was attempting to convert it (with full license video converter such as AVS&Any Vid Conv) to avi, mkv. whatever the setting is, the result have no more lag,but THERE WAS NO AUDIO AT ALL.
I rendered it to .mov file( compression type "photo-JPEG") and i also checked a check box of audio output( 48.000KHz-32 bit-stereo)
the project is about only 27 second!
    sum1, help me please!!

    ooww ya, one thing
i just switch into windows XP SP3, i have dual booth on my PC
Inside XP, there are AE CS4 and then i tried to render the broken video .mov(800MB) into the same setting (.mov & 48.000KHz -16bit-stereo& compression "photo-JPEG"). my XP was installed with quicktime 7.3.1.70 and XP codec pack( not K-lite codec pack)
the outcome performance is pretty good, NO LAGS,no glitches .but somehow, the video size was decreased dramatically (200MB). what's going on actually? is the source in CODEC? thx b4
