Anybody here going to Arden Fair Mall Sacramento, CA on the 24th? Maybe even the Roseville Galleria?

ya i dont think i will be going to the arden one. id rather go to the roseville one. but im worried about going really really early and someone there saying we cant line up or which door to even line up at. the apple store there didnt have any good information on what to do for the launch day. im going to call them again to see if someone else will give some better advice.

Does anybody have any ideas for a fairly simple program that I could try to write (I am a fair programmer, but I'm not to creative)?

You know, Java Game Programming for Dummies is actually a pretty good book (despite the "Dummies" part!) It is written in 1.0, but it has a "ponglet", card games, and several maze games. All the applets I've tried from them actually work (some typos in the book itself, but the CD is ok). Any of these could be "starter" code.
Yahoo has a whole bunch of Java applet games. You could try to reproduce pieces of the games you see. (These are also interesting in the sense that you can immediately see what works in a game and what doesn't.)
It is always fun to write little components. Cool buttons (write a nice little non-rectangular button that lights up or something), text boxes that look like digital displays, funny text labels (maybe with a weird font or with letters that jump all over the place when you mouse over them).. These don't take a whole lot of time to write, but write them well and they are very useful for your future games.

Since upgrading to 10.7.2 to use iCloud, i keep getting a message with ubd wants to use the login keychain, anyone for help to how to get rid of this...

This is what I did and it seems to have worked so far. While that little annoying box is up you need to open the Keychain access by:
going to applications -> open utilities folder -> click to open Keychain Access
Now here is the stupid part, you have to continue to press the cancel button on the "ubd wants to use login keychain" box for the kaychain window to open. Once you have keychain access open go to:
the top of your monitor and select "Keychain Access" right next to the little apple logo -> click preferences in the options panel-> the preference box will open now -> click "Reset My Default Keychain" -> another box will pop up that says "Please enter your login password. This password will be used to create your new keychain" (of course this is assuming that you use a login password to access your mac) -> enter your login password and a box shows up that says "created a new empty 'Login' keychain"
After that you should be good to go. This new keychain you created with your login password overides the old keychain. The old keychain is still available in the Keychain's folder but is not being used and therefor can be deleted. All you have to do now is press ok, and your good. If the "ubd wants to use login keychain" box is still there after you reset your keychains just hit cancel and it should be gone for good or you can enter your login password.
Is this a fixall that will work forever? I have no idea but doing this has allowed me to access my network at work and all the servers I need to get to.
Oh and one more thing. You may need to press cancel on the ubd box throughout this entire process, I just gon in the habit of clicking a button hitting cancel on the ubd box and the new window would pop up.

[CS3, AS] Anyone for tag?

A few weeks ago, I happily wrote a little script to split a multi-column text frame into separate frames. I found it straightforward to do and an encouraging first foray into InDesign scripting.
Yesterday I was informed that I need to add a new feature to this script. For accounting purposes, every element on our pages has to be tagged.
Obviously my naive and innocent little newly-created text frames are untagged. I thought it would a straightforward matter to add the tagging bit on to my script.To do so seemed compulsory.
Is there any scripter around who would put up a little message at the end of their script saying "Now open the tags panel and tag all your nice new text frames"?
So I looked into the Scripting Guide and found it's to do with XML, a subject about which I know very little and as I read on I felt I was knowing even less; just growing in confusion.
So I skipped to the sample scripts and high up in the list was one entitled "Untag Element". Strangely enough, I found this encouraging and scanned eagerly downward for the one entitled "Tag Element". No such luck.
I also opened and read quite a few scripts with vaguely promising titles. None helped.
This is a subject about which I neither want nor need to know too much, although I assure you I have spent some hours in fruitless research. I am simply trying to meet someone else's need.
Can anyone out there please put me out of my misery by providing me with what I suspect will be a childishly simple line to add the required tags to my text frames?

I hate it when someone else points out something like that. OTOH, if I noticed it myself, well, never too shy to pat myself on the shoulder for being smart.
Perhaps not needed anymore, but the magic command to tag a frame is not "Tag" (that would be too easy, wouldndnit), but it's called "markup". I'd have to look up how to actually use it, though.

Anyone for Data Structures ?

Can anyone think of a datastrucute where by I can store like an array of integers (which I can increment easily) and a linked key (a string) that will move with its value when I sort it in order fo the integer value? similar to a hashTable but you cant sort this > ???
I know you cant get arrays of arrays of two different types can you ?

SortedMap (such as TreeMap) orders by keys, not values.
You can make any collection and call Collections.sort() on it to sort it, but your object need to be Comparable for it to work. You can make a key-value object that implements Comparable and the compareTo method responds to the value. Then, make the equals method respond to the key, so when you call get(key), you'll get back the correct object. It may be a little tricky, but I think it could work.

OS : Solaris 10 x86-64 (with 2 CPUs on all Nodes on both Primary and Standby)
We have a fairly busy 2-node RAC OLTP DB(not as busy as Telecom) as Primary.
We need to set up a Physical standby with Real Time Apply.
I'll be using Standby Redo logs with LGWR as the Log shipper.
We are looking for Maximum Availability Mode but Redo apply shouldn't be slow.
What would you set for the following parameters
LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2 -- Both at primary and secondary
LOG_ARCHIVE_MAX_PROCESSESAny other parameters/settings which you could quickly think of which I have to be careful about ?

hi, can you help me about the use of hash function to calculate this :

it reads the data normally into an array structure, but I tried to hash it, either it gave single value per key or another type of errors. How can I add this "hash" function to apply the above formula to the values per key?

I wrote the code using subs, the 1st one did it ok , it read the file but the 2nd one my logic is a bit off, I guess..Since I`m new to this language, I`m trying to use analogies between other languages, anyway this is the logic:

store the name as a key, calculate the grade as the value of a hash
formula:
(1st grade * 20%) + (2nd grade * 25%) + (3rd Grade * 25%) + (4th Grade * 30%)

Frame count for science fair

Hello,
My son wants to do a science fair project to calculate the speed of cars going by our house using our video camera. We know the frame rate of the video but I cannot get a frame count to show up on our computer (just the length of the clip which I assume is calculated from the frame rate). The problem is I could be more accurate if I actually knew the frame number. I was hoping to avoid manually counting the frames. I could use quicktime viewer as well but I can't seem to make it give me this information either.

Yes you can do this.
In iMovie/Preferences, select "Display Time as Hours:Minutes:Seconds:Frames"
Then VIEW/PLAYHEAD INFO
You will see the specific frame as you move your cursor over the clip.
It may also help you to move the Thumbnail Slider to 1/2 second, so the frames are spread out more.

I've spent hours researching, trying to see if this is easy
to do, and I've come to the point where I'll just pay someone else
to do this. It's beyond my scope of knowledge. And I doubt I'll
need to do this in the future, so while I don't mind learning, I
don't necessarily need to in this case. Are we allowed to ask for
paid help in this forum?

Cannot message hubby or FaceTime him..he cannot message anyone for months now. Hoped this last update would fix problem but it didn't. What's up.

For months my husband has not been able to message or FaceTime. Several article I read stated the next update would fix the problem...it didn't. Any ideas?

1. Make sure software is up to date
2. Make sure FaceTime is enabled; Settings>FaceTime
3. Make sure Date and Time is correctly set; Settings>General>Date and Time>Set Automatically>On
4. Make sure Push Notification is enabled
5. Make sure phone number or email address is correct
6. Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together) until you see the Apple Logo
