Anyone got Issue with Time Machine on Mac OS 10.9.5 on External Hard Drive?

Mac Book Air June 2012, Mac OS 10.9.5 (fully updated) external Hard Drive, USB 3
Dear all,
Just realized that my regular Time Machine back-ups don’t work anymore: despite several back-ups, Time Machine tells me that I did not back-up for 10 days but I did not get any error message.
Suspected an issue with my external Hard Drive, so took a brand new one 1TB, labelled Mac OS, USB 3, sold at Apple Corner.
Registered this new drive in Time Machine, started a full back-up of about 350 Gb, and it is hanging up, 13Kb copied in one hour.....
This become very critical as I don’t have back-up since a few days....
Your help will be upmost appreciated.
Best regards to all,
Bernard

Temporarily turn Time Machine "off". Make sure a backup is not in progress, then rebuild the Spotlight database according to the following instructions: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes
(summary: drag the entire source volume to the exclusions list, click OK, then remove it by clicking the minus ("–") button.)
This will have no effect on any existing backups.
Let Spotlight finish reindexing and then turn Time Machine back "on". Select "Back Up Now".

To add to Niel's comment bear in mind that if you have a backup copy on an external HD and later delete the orignals on your Mac HD you will then only have one copy - so no backup.
If the pictures are precious you should have at least two copies, and ideally another copy kept off site,

  • How can I restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. Using Migrat

I would like to restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. When I tried using Migration Assistant it only gives me my internal hard drive as an option to restore to. The internal hard drive on my macbook isnt large enough to store the files.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

  • Time Machine Backup Interrupted. Im using a Sony External Hard drive

i have a white macbook, version 10.6.8. I wanted to back up my mac so i connected my Sony External Hard Drive and used time machine. About a quarter way through the back up, i get this message saying to "You need to restart your computor. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again." I cannot press/move the mouse in anyway or do anything when this message comes up. When i open my mac again a window comes up saying "You shut down your laptop because of probelm". The backup stops and fails. This has happened 3 times now and has never happened until i tried to back up . What seems to be the problem and what should i do to fix it?

Hi. This is called a kernel panic. You should make sure your software is updated, including any third party software you have. Keep in mind any software you may have recently installed. You may have to erase any  files that installed in the backup drive as they could be corrupted. Read this.  http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS3742

  • Photos. They are on my macBook, backed up on time machine. Copied them (hours and hours) to external hard drive. They are now in alphabetical order (19,000  of them) NOT IN THEIR EVENTS or date order-and have been taken with different cameras- help!!!!!!

    Photos.
They are on my macBook, backed up on time machine. There are 19,000+ of them, some rescued from a pc crash- which I used the nifty iPhoto to put back into date order.
I want to take them all off my laptop, now............as I need to use it for WORK!!
Copied them (hours and hours) to another external hard drive.
They are now in alphabetical order (all 19,000+ of them) NOT IN THEIR EVENTS or date order. (-They have also been taken with different cameras over the years and some of the generic camera numbering remains.)
I have tried to copy them (only a few as an experiment)  one event at a time, but that again "opens up" the Event "folder" and tips them out as individuals and therefore just lists image letters and numbers alphabetically.
    How can I copy
the whole library still in  "Events" to an external hard drive?
the folders/albums I have already made on to this hard drive?
and how can I add to this back up monthly, again keeping events and folders separate and updated?
Mac is so user friendly - there must be a way.........
    Thanks

UPDATE : I have re-installed from disk, various apps that were no longer functioning such as iLife, iWork etc. So, I now can access my photos again.
Also, I had to re-install all the software for my printer ( Stylus Pro 4880 ) and reset it so the printer is working again.
Photoshop CS4 won't open. I think I will have to get in touch with Adobe as basically, I guess they have a built-in "blocker" which prevents me from opening the app as the license is for only 1 user and having re-installed the OS, there are now, in effect, 2 users ( Me and Me 1, I think ).
So, having added on a new external HD, Time Machine has made a copy of most of the files, folders, apps etc onto the external HD. The internal HD is still nearly full ( 220 GBs out of 232 GBs ).
I am guessing the way to go now in order to free up space on the internal HD is to delete/trash older photos from my iPhoto library and hope that if needed, I will be able to access them on the external HD.
Am I correct ? Please advise before I do something I will regret.
    Thanks, Sean.

  • How to use Time Machine to back up and restore from 2 external hard drives

    Hi I need some help
I am about to switch internal hard drives and kept a time machine back up to an external hard drive until I had filled it up. That was a few months ago and in order to make space I deleted some files from my internal drive. In the last few months I have filled that space (About 50GBs)on my internal drive. Needless to say those new files aren't backed up.
What I want to do is after switching internal hard drives restore everything including the new files apps and updates etc via time machine
Can I back up my most recent computer situation as it is to a new external hard drive using TM and then restore that to the new internal hard drive and then restore specific folders from my first external TM hard drive?
    Thanks a million
    Rotang

I am sorry, i am confused about what exactly you are trying to say here.
well, Time machine works on very simple concept. it backs up either all the data from your computer or only selected data(customized) from the computer.
to restore you can follow these steps as mentioned below
    To restore files:
Open a window for the item you want to restore.
For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. If you want to recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail.
If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock.
If Time Machine isn’t in the Dock, look for it in the Applications folder.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through all the backups Time Machine has created.
If you need more information about an item, double-click to preview it.
The windows behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it and then click Restore.
You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk.
If an item you restore has the same name as another item on your computer, you’re asked if you want to keep the current item, the restored item, or both.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if it is found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder. Time Machine may ask if you want to re-create one or more folders in order to return a restored item to its original location.
And with regards to your question,
Can I back up my most recent computer situation as it is to a new external hard drive using TM and then restore that to the new internal hard drive and then restore specific folders from my first external TM hard drive?
yes, you can do that but but this can be done only by navigating into the Time machine restore folder and then copying the uptdated folder to the destination folder(drive) manually..

  • How do I use time machine to make a back up of my external hard drive

I'd like to use my AirPort Time Machine to backup from an external hard drive. How do I do that?
    1) When I connect my LaCie 500 GB EHD direct via USB I don't see where I can acces it to transfer the files
    2) When I connect my LaCie 500 GB EHB to my new MacBook Pro, it cannot get it removed from the 'ignore' list in the Time Capsule
Looking forward to any suggestions and I researched other questions but unfortunately unsuccessful until now.
    Michiel

The drive needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and connected to the computer for Time Machine to be able to back it up.

  • Time Machine will not delete the oldest backup when external hard drive is full

I may not understand this timemachine thing, but....
I have macbook pro, 15", mid 2011, mountain lion......I have a WD Passport Studio I have ben using to back up with time machine periodically. I tried to back up today and it says i do not have enough room on my external drive. I tought the time machine automatically deletes the oldest back up?

I agree with Linc's response but you also have to realize that it will keep the oldest backup and start removing snapshots if it can.
It is my undestanding that time machine does what is called a full backup the first time and then the snapshots done after that are changes since the first backup. I'm not sure if time machine then does periodic backups or just snapshots.

  • Hi, Question about secure empty trash. I moved some Time Machine backup files to the trash from an external hard drive. Now I can't secure empty trash. It starts, finds 74,003 files, and does nothing. The external hard drive shows it's empty, but it isn't

I moved some time machine backup files from an external USB hard drive to the trash. Tried secure empty trash. It counts 74,003 items, then just sits there. The external hard drive window shows it's empty, but the info pane says it only has 50G of memory left. I left the secure empty trash on over night. It did nothing. Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ron

Relaunch the Finder, then from the Finder menu bar, select
    Finder ▹ Preferences ▹ Advanced
and uncheck the box marked Empty Trash securely. Try again to empty the Trash.

  • When i run Time Machine to back up my computer onto an external hard drive, i have no way of knowing when the back up process has been completed. I don't know when it is safe to disconnect the external hard drive - which is store in a separate location.

When i run Time Machine to back up my computer on to an external hard drive, i have no way of knowing when the back up process has been completed.  This is necessary to know because i don't leave my external hard drive connected to the computer.  I routinely disconnect it after backing up the hard drive, and then i store the external hard drive in a different location from the computer.  So, knowing when the back up process has been completed would be a very helpful thing to have the computer specify.

Just enable Time Machine's menu extra (System Preferences -> Time Machine -> Show Time Machine in menu bar.
This will add a little Time Machine icon to your menubar. When Time Machine is actively backing up your data, the icon will spin as a visual indicator. You can also click the menu icon to see the backup status, including how much data is left to back up.

  • Can Time Machine back up my iTunes Library stored on external hard-drive?

Is it possible to set Time Machine to back up my iTunes music/movie library that is located on another external hard drive (in addition to backing up the other files on my iMac computer)?

If the drive is connected and not in the excluded list it should backup automagically

  • Time Machine: Can I backup to more than 1 external hard drive?

would anyone know about this: i have a TM at home in boston which i use when i am there; however, now i am in taiwan where i will have a second TM to use here: apart from naming the two TMs differently on the laptop (macbookpro, tiger), is there anything i should look out for? with many thanks, steven totosy

Other users have successfully backed up their Mac to more than one Time Machine drive. As you stated, name them differently. You also need to switch TM drives, but that's only once after you've arrived at your new location. Note that after extended absences, TM may not want to continue with a backup and force you to create a new backup. I don't recall how much time has passed, but someone has stated 10 days, but I cannot confirm that.

  • Time Machine won't let me back up an external hard drive

    Hello,
I am running time machine to backup onto a 500GB USB drive and keep my iTunes library on a firewire 250gb drive. When I looked in time machine options in system preferences I found that my firewire disk is already listed as 'do not back up'. I want it backed up and don't seem to be able to remove it from that list. Anyone have an ideas why?
    Cheers
    Steve
    PS First ever post!

Are you referring to the drive used for backups, or the drive I want to back up? When I first used Time Machine, my external drive (used to house my itunes library) was on the exclude list. I easily removed it and the TM window reflected the additional contents (indicating a backup of about 75G (27 on internal drive, remainder on external). But backups are being done only on the contents of the internal drive.
I too have re-included the external drive on the exclude list, then removed it. No help. Do I have to reformat my external drive and lose all of my itunes music?
    thanks

    Hey rgmhughes7,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the Time Machine backup disk is full. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • How to completely delete all backed-up time machine files but not other files in my external hard drive?

I use a 500G WD as my external.. I have documents and movies there that i do not want to delete. Simply i just want to delete my time machine files completely and for my mac to not recognised it as a time machine HD.. TY guys  p.s. A video would be nice

If you have the external HD setup as one partition, you cannot delete only the TM files as a unit.  You will have to use the brute force method of deleting directory by directory.
If you have the drive partitioned into a TM backup partition and another partition for your other work, you can simply reformat the TM backup partition.
So, the first question is, how is your drive setup, as one or as two partitions?
