Anyone had horizontal lines on iMac display.

Does anyone know why I have horizontal lines showing up on my imac.  The genius support at the apple store told me it was the display and would cost $400 to fix. I have owned it 3 years and 1 month.

I have the same problems, and did some googling. I found out the white 24 inch (late 2006 to early 2007) Imacs have a video card problem. The soldering on these units tend to go bad, the card is the Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT.
These cards go for about $280 plus installation so I can see where it would cost that much.

  • Horizontal lines on imac display, video card going bad?

I have horizontal lines and a triangular shaped artifact on my 24 inch Imac display. This happens after quite awhile of use, so I am thinking it might be the video card is about to go. Also, have issues with viewing flash videos, the browser (safari) will just quit responding, sometimes it will recover. Most times I have to reboot the machine. I believe all these syptoms are related. Any ideas?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Your graphic card is damaged. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is to take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get the computer repaired.
Both problems may be related, because Flash uses the graphic card and it often fails

  • Horizontal Lines Across MBP Display

I am getting horizontal lines across the display of my laptop. The lines do not show-up when I have the computer attached to the external cinema display, and the lines will go away if I run the disk utility, with the only errors being SUID errors that cannot be repaired, and Apple has said aren't an issue. However, the next time I open my laptop, the lines re-appear. I've reset the PRAM, and that didn't work. If the lines are showing, a rebooting of the system does not help. The only fix I've found is running disk utility, but that is a very temporary fix.
The lines are all over the screen rotating up from top to bottom, and multi-colored. The overall display is blurry.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Will

Unfortunately, that makes it sound like a problem with the built in display. Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test? If you get an error code, it might give you a clue.
Do you have access to an Apple Store? I think they have a special diagnostic for the NVIDIA chip problem, so they might be able to pin down for certain if the problem is with the chip or the display.
    Good luck!

  • Faint horizontal lines accross iMac lcd

Had a 24" iMac that developed faint horizontal lines across the lcd that got progressively darker the longer the computer was on. Had the lcd replaced by Apple twice, but after a couple of weeks the problem returned. They gave me a new iMac, but a month in I have the same problem with the new machine. Has anyone encountered this problem? Is it an inherent issue with iMac lcds or is it something external affecting my machine? And I'm not talking poltergeist. Help, want this fixed.

We have a 20" imac Core Duo that was purchased summer 2006 - then about 5 or 6 months ago, it started developing horizontal lines across applications (Safari, Mail, etc) and the desktop - sometimes they would go away, sometimes not... I thought is was some video driver conflicting, upgraded to snow leopard, went to the genius bar, etc... but lately it got worse to the point that it started locking up every day... this after going weeks or months without a reboot and over 3 years having almost zero crashes...
I read in a forum where the video chip (GPU - graphics processing unit) was heat sensitive and thought that after 3+ years, maybe it was dusty in there... I installed the iStat widget to monitor the temp of the GPU and installed a fan control (software) where you can increase the minimum speed of the hard drive fan (allegedly located above the GPU). I also put the end of the vacuum on the fan vent just above where the power cord goes into the back of the monitor and let it run for a while hoping to clean things out...
5 days later - zero display issues, zero hangs and zero crashes - and the GPU runs an average of 25 degrees cooler than before. This after a genius bar guy told me that it probably needs a new display board. Good Luck!

  • Horizontal lines on external display

I have just received a refurbished mac mini (previous generation) purchased from Apple. When attached to my monitor, an LG Flatron L204WT, it displays thin horizontal lines which run the width of the display. They are present across the entire display. The lines are most noticeable on a solid grey colour. They are not visible in a gradient, such as the drop shadows around windows. They look similar to horizontal scan lines on a CRT television.
I use the same monitor as an external display for my macbook; it doesn't have this problem.
Has anyone else had this issue? I realize I can take it to Apple for repair, but I would hate to find out this is a chronic problem. Coupled with the annoying chirping noise the mini is making, this is a bit of a let down... I'm considering returning it. Anyone had wither of these issues with the redesigned mac mini?
    Thanks!

Calibrated the monitor using "expert mode"... problem solved!

  • RANDOM HORIZONTAL LINES on iMac G5 (1st G)

I have the iMac G5 (NO iSight) and some months ago I discovered some random horizontal lines that went through the whole display up or down. They are not there the whole time, sometimes when I work with Aperture or even iPhoto or Safari the lines start to appear, or sometimes when I turn on the computer. I don't think they are linked with temperature, but I do think they are related to the processor use, as when they appear I hear the fans inside, which means the more of the processor is being used. I've also tried the iMac on different homes, so it's not energy related. I got the iMac to an Apple Authorized Retailer and they changed the logic board under the extended repair for the iMac G5, but that was no luck. The lines are still here, and they don't know what is causing them. Anyone knows what I could do to get the display fixed? Any part inside? Thanks, they are very annoying.

    Hey guys,
About the RANDOM HORIZONTAL LINES I don't have any good news for you. I contacted an Apple Authorized Reseller and they took a look at my iMac G5, and after sending photos of the lines to them they could actually get the logic board replaced through an extended warranty program Apple has with the logic board and power supply. However, I brought it home, and the lines are still here. It could be something with the actual display because they told me the logic board contained almost everything, so in my iMac the logic board is (hopefully) new, or at least working. I haven't tried plugging it in to another display. But I do think it is related with processor activity; when I run many applications that require lots of processor, the lines appear, and when the task is finished, they are gone, such as the Aperture Trial (lines here don't let you even see at your pictures correctly). I'll keep contacting the authorized reseller to see if anything comes up and I'll keep you posted.
Please try contacting Apple in the United States. I can't, I don't live in the US. Any ideas of solving this (maybe directly from Apple) would be great. Thanks!

  • Horizontal line on Macbook display

    Hello everyone!
I'm writing regarding my brother´s Macbook. The computer is about 1 month old now. He's been very satisfied with his first mac until now. A couple of days ago when his computer woke up from sleep it had this horizontal line (1px high) crossing the screen. It sometimes changes color, but it won't go away. I tried resetting the NVRAM but it didn't help. Does anyone know something that might solve the problem?
    //Jonas

    Welcome to macbook forum,..
It could be a "slow" pixel rather than a dead pixel.
If that line is crossing your screen, I think it accumulate more than 15 or 20 bad pixel that required to make it eligible to be covered by warranty (double check this with apple or authorized service center).
    also try this too:

  • Smart form footer issue in 2nd page - Horizontal line is not displayed

    Dear Experts,
I am working on a smartform. Which has a table (Header, Main area, Footer), When there are more records and footer alone is printed in the 2nd page, i am not getting the first horizontal line for the footer and it does not look like a table in second page.
My smartform table exactly looks like this when printed in a single page.
    |_________|______________|_________________|____________|________________|__________|  - Header
    |_________|______________|_________________|____________|________________|__________|  - Main Area
    |_______________________________________________________|___________________________|  - Footer
When the footer alone is printed in second page, i want to print as
    |_____________________________________________________|__________________________|  - Footer
    But its printed as
    |_____________________________________________________|__________________________|  - Footer
When the item records are printed in multiple pages, i will have header and item records in every page. The problem comes only when the footer alone gets printed in separate page.
Please suggest me how to fix this issue. Thanks in advance.
    Rajesh.

    hi rajesh..
check the line type for that footer. It's getting displayed properly on multiple pages because the lower line of other rows is getting overlapped on the upper one of footer. This is why you dont recognize it.
On single page there arent any other rows. So it shows a blank.
So as samreen said make the top line of that line type bold.
    Regards,
    Sumit.

  • Macbook Pro w/Retina - Horizontal Lines on Entire Display

We have just issued some 15" MacBookPros with Retina Displays to users. They are running Yosemite. Users are complaining about very low contrast horizontal lines that run the entire width of the screen across all windows, including the background desktop image. They don't really impact usability much, but since we paid top dollar for the retina displays I expect better.  Lines are there across all resolution settings. These are not glitches like others have reported.
    Anybody seen this?
The users are also having random problems with the entire computer locking up when attaching or detaching an external 4K display but that's a different issue.

    I'm having this as well.
I got an early 2014 15" Retina MacbookPro that has the exact same thing for the past 2 weeks.
It looks like there's a very faint, low-contrast white/grayish line every 2 pixels on the screen. It's visible everywhere indeed (also in OSX recovery).
I'm running 10.10 as well but I don't think it's actually an OS issue.

  • How to fix blue horizontal lines on imac

    Help me,,,
how to fix blue horizontal lines on my imac screen

Take it to an Apple store genius bar and have it tested...a year ago there were several posts about vertical lines, sometimes blue, sometimes yellow, sometimes pink and mixtures...in every case it turned out to be due to failure of a graphics module chip.  The Apple techs were able to replace the chip (the user cannot even think of doing that) for a price significantly less than a new logic board.
So, take it in and have it tested.

  • Laptop suddenly had horizontal lines running across the screen

Suddeenly horizontal lines appreared across the screen .
I have shut down and started up the computer numerous times and it does not go away .
It also affects the graphics and text on the screen .
If I cannot fix should I have the computer cleaned and set back to factory standard and how do i do that /
    Thanks

    2 possibilities:
    1. The video chip (motherboard) has gone bad; or,
    2. Just the screen has gone bad.
Connect the computer to an external monitor and see if the lines appear on it. If so, it is #1.
It is doubtful that restoring the laptop to factory specs will have any effect on the isue either way but if you want to do that you can tap F11 as you power up to enter factory reset.
