Anyone have any luck with steam and wine

im trying to get any steam to work with wine and so far i've had no luck.
i have a 512 ATI RADEON X1600 graphics card and im using the open source ati driver.
have had some success with counterstrike 1.6.  I start a game (local) but it is extremely choppy/laggy.
does anyone have any pointers on how to get it to run more smoothly?

I don't know how well the open source drivers are going to handle games, catalyst may work better but you will have to use the legacy driver (here) for an X1600, and it doesn't work with the most recent kernel.

  • TS1363 I'vw tried everything here multiple times, anyone have any luck with another non-apple generated solution?

Any time I try to connect to itunes, windows recognizes the ipod, but it never comes up in itunes. When the bubble for "trust" or "dont trust" comes up, I tap trust. Then I hear the window sound for disconnecting something from a usb port. I tried all the apple solutions, nothing helped at all. Anyone have any ideas? I tried full restoring the ipod too, and now I've got an empty ipod that I cant connect to itunes....fantastic...

After having communicated with Bose extensively over the last two months I'm pretty sure there is no solution to this.  Bose are not the only phones that exhibit this, but there are only a handful that do and they all support multi-link technology in BT 4.0.  One theory is that in searching for other devices to link is what causes the skipping, but in none of these is there an option to turn off multi-link (which might be the solution).
The good news is that CES has introduced a TON of new BT headphones, and we'll see these come to market this spring.  One or more of them may well work for folks (for audiophiles the best looking one so far is Sennhesier's Momentum series, already a respected model among wired sets, the BT version is getting excellent early reviews.  But pricey).  Unless you need something immediately my advice would be to wait a few months and see what comes out.
You are correct that Powerbeats have sync issues -- sync issues are common with bluetooth but some makers do better than others.  My portable BT receivers, for example, have excellent sync across all apps.  But as I noted above, this isn't a good solution for those on the go (pairing a portable BT receiver with otherwise wired phones -- although if folks are interested my new favorite is the Fidelio X2/27 model with these.  Truly audiophile level sound, at a reasonable price.  But not something I'd take out of the house :>).

  • Anyone have any luck with the tascam 144?

i am buying a tascam 144 usb interface in about a week cus someone told me it worked well with garage band but now i am having second thoughts cus i have read that a lot of people have trouble getting garage band to recognize it. anyone got any advice?
also how do you turn the volume of a track up during the mastering process, without clipping, so that your song is as loud as a commercial cd?
    thanks

can someone explain how compression or limiting raises the volume cus a i am stil new : )
Compression is confusing, and people are often confused by what it does and how it works, so you’re not alone! It’s also used in a number of ways for different purposes, many of them “so that’s how they do that!” familiar, and others not so obvious. It’s been an essential part of the recording process throughout the history of recording, and great compressors, like great guitar amps, are sought-after pieces of gear.
To understand conceptually how compressors work to make things louder (which isn’t their only use, but is the topic of the thread), you need to understand the difference between peak and average levels. Average volume levels are what give you a sense of how loud the music is, peak levels are the occasional spike. A peak level may be so short, you barely perceive it.
When you raise the volume level on the whole track to the point just underneath clipping, it’s going to look to the peaks, and bring them up to the top of the volume scale. Everything else (and average levels) are going to be below that. If you tried to raise the volume any higher to get average levels higher – so it sounds louder – you would be lifting your peak levels into the clipping range. And clipping is bad.
So, the trick is to lower the volume on just the peaks so you can raise the volume on the entire track and make the average levels louder. Compression does that by kicking in above a threshold that you set (or is set in the preset), and lowering levels above that threshold by a certain ratio. If the settings are gentle, you may not notice it. If the settings are aggressive, you may not only notice it, but it can create ugly artifacts. In any case, above a certain threshold, it restrains the volume, taming the peaks.
After it tames the peaks (which may incidentally, be only a few imperceptible spikes) the audio flows into a “makeup gain” stage that’s essentially a volume knob. When first compressed, with reduced peaks, the track is no louder than it was before – and with lower peaks may even be softer. However, with the lowered peaks, the makeup gain stage is able to raise the overall volume higher than before, since (if you can picture it) there’s less distance between the new shorter peaks, and where most of the song volume lives below them. So first the compressor squashes the peaks, then the makeup gain can bring everything up... even higher.
Turning off normalize is kind of a “cheat” because it works by allowing you to bring the peaks into clipping (and therefore raise the overall level). In other words, rather than tame the peaks, you let them clip. Because some songs (and people) will tolerate some clipping, it’s a fast and easy way to raise the volume. Artful use of compression and limiting (which is extreme compression above a certain threshold) can get you to the same place without clipping.
Compressors are also often used on voice and instruments to “fatten them up” where the goal isn’t necessarily to make things louder, but to make things sound fuller by lifting up the low-level stuff that might be otherwise inaudible.
Compressors are not without their price. If you overuse a compressor, the dynamic range can be squashed into lifelessness. Also (and particularly with bad compressors), you can sometimes hear the action of the compressor when it kicks in above a certain threshold, and when it releases below it, what's called "pumping."
You might want to check out some other sites on the net to really understand the concept because once you understand it, you can use it to shape the sound of your tracks in powerful ways, and avoid pitfalls.
But I wouldn’t worry about it too much! Understand it as much as you can, but if you just dive in and do it, and use your ears to determine what sounds good or bad to you, you can learn by doing pretty quick.

  • Anyone have any luck with merging libraries?

    i'm merging two itunes libraries.
trying not to create duplicates, but i think this is impossible.
so i am going to use the view duplicates option and then click date added.
i'll let you know how it works, but if anyone can help with anything faster, please let me know.

I'm having some problems migrating from JRE1.3.1 based JavaBean-ActiveX control. There were non-trivial changes required for EventDescriptor for the events thrown by the bean. However after successfully creating 1.4.2 based ActiveX control, I'm getting following exception:

Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions!
You will continue to hear different opinions here, where thoughts range everywhere between "anti-virus software is the evil spawn of Satan" to "anyone not running anti-virus software is a fool."
Truth is, this is still a very personal decision on a Mac. Depending on circumstances, it is still very easily possible to stay safe without using anti-virus software, but circumstances and personal preferences vary widely. Besides which, anti-virus software cannot even remotely provide you a guarantee of protection!

Always backup your important data before upgrading to a new Mac OS X.
Lion doesn't erase the drive but better to be safe than sorry.
And run Disk Utility  (Applications/Utilities). Verify and if necessary repair the startup disk before upgrading.

Hmmm, Norton extensions are broken again in Firefox 4.0.1. It seems that Norton didn't allow for Firefox 4.0 security updates when they updated their Firefox extension for Firefox 4.0. Norton says they'll have a fix in two weeks. A Norton user posted a fix in this forum thread.

  • Does anybody have any experience with keyloggers and a good program to detect one on your mac? I think I may have one.

So yesterday I found out that my email address password had been changed. I don't remember doing this, but it is possible I changed it a while back and considering I keep my email constantly logged in. But at the same time, two of my apps were trying to access their "store". I play a game called League of Legends, which has an online store, and it randomly came up with the message "Could not connect to Maestro" (credit card). Then, Itunes (which I rarely use) came up with "sorry, we could not continue with your purchase". I think it's very strange that all of this happened at the same time, but hopefully it's a case of a forgotten password and two games bugging/crashing. I scanned my entire computer with iantivirus and it hasn't found anything, but I've heard keyloggers can be a bit hard to detect. Does anybody have any experience with keyloggers and if so, what program did you use to detect and destroy it?

If you think that a keylogger has been installed the only safe thing you can do is erase your drive and reinstall.
I don't think that is the case however.

  • Anyone have any dealings with having to replace your phone and paying full price while still under contract?

My phone drowned and I needed a replacement right away.  Since my contract was not up yet (one year into it) they would not give me a deal on a replacement phone - paid $200 for the cheapest one they had available, which WAS NOT in my budget!  Pretty unhappy about that!  It was suggested that I go onto Ebay and buy one there until the contract was up.  Not possible because of the time frame.  Any suggestions?

Do you have any friends with Verizon who may have an older phone. They may loan or give it to you. In the past, I gave a co-worker an old phone so his son who had lost his phone could use it until he was eligible for an upgrade.

  • Has anyone have any problems with 5s "sticking"?

Has anyone had any problems with the 5s iPhone "sticking"? It's happened to me twice where I press the home button, and nothing happens.

Yes.  Very sticky. especially the first time you go to click it after not using it for a bit.  Mine feels similar to if there were crumbs underneath, or parts crunching together.
I just got off phone with Apple.  I thought it was my imagination and being too sensitive until just now seeing other posts having same complaint.   Apple rep on phone said it was not normal and for me to get it swapped out.

  • Any luck with FCP and DA-88/98?

    Hi All,
I have to deliver a series of DA-88's (or 98's...doesn't matter which) for a project. Rather than spend the thousands it would cost to transfer each tape at a dub house, I'd like to save the $$$ and do it myself.
From what I've researched, the Kona 3 and the TASCAM DA-98-HR can connect to one another. But can they interface through FCP?
My main question is, has anyone out there ever successfuly connected a FCP system to a DA-88/98 deck and been able to properly output 8 channel audio? If so, what was your setup?
    Thanks!

you may have a problem with the HR tapes playing back in a 88/98 due to the sample rate.
video ref is a viable option. you'd need to do mmc and mtc to the tascam from a midi interface in soundtrack pro. I've seen menu options regarding midi devices in STP but have never used it. I use Digital Performer to get stuff like that done. the midi timepiece AV will look at video (standard def analog/BlackBurst) and generate WC to lock up other machines, the 2408MKIII has the ability to use any input as SMPTE TC and will gen code from one of their accompanying apps.
Kona will output rp188 TC embedded in the HD SDI path for machines that are hip to that but the 88/98 etc obviously don't read that.
Why do they need DA88/98 ? can you not negotiate file based delivery?
Some networks that required stems on 88/98 will allow file based delivery, particularly with the interchange problems with obsolete/unsupported gear. I haven't had to do one in over a year now, and with the associated difficulties hope I never have to again.

  • HT1918 Anyone have any problems with card information not changing?

I am having so many problems with changing cards and having the information stay when I change it.  It NEVER stays changed on the PC or my Iphone.  Then I get contact assistance for help.  Does anyone have a suggestion  or have had similiar problems???

The phone goes on the charger at night every night and is at 100% when I am up. The only thing that I use it for is calls e-mail and an occasional Text. I don't; use for music or movies or anything like that. I do play solitaire on it but that hasn't been a problem up to now. I went in and googled the iPhone 6 for power save settings and it gave me a way to look at the Activity.
The only thing that was used that day was Solitaire. I turned off Cell access to Solitaire and it seemed to last a little longer. I just turned it back on to see what happens.

    Hi,
I have the Norco DS-500 and the FirmTek SeriTek/5PM. In my use, the SeriTek/5PM is quieter and provides a much cooler environment for the hard disks. Occasionally, I will hear the Norco rattle while the SeriTek/5PM is built like a tank and never has this issue.
The SeriTek/5PM is the only 5PM on the market with user selectable fan controls. In addition, the advanced cooling system allows it to keep the warmest running hard disks cool. I would much rather have the SeriTek/5PM than any other 4 or 5-bay port multiplier enclosure on the market. It is quiet, cool and built to last.

  • Anyone have any luck getting a photo editing program for 10.9.1 ?  (other than iPHOTO / Aperature)

I was using Elements 11 with Mountain Lion and that was OK but the reviews for Elements 12 compatability with 10.9 are all pretty bad.  The folks at Adobe claim that Elements 12 "can be installed" on 10.9.1 but they dont actually state that it  "works".   I'm just trying to avoid spending the big bucks for the full Photoshop program and Im not even sure that would work either.  I have this great new iMAC and cant play around with it yet. Suggestions ?

I have used all of the following on Maversicks, with no issues at all:
    iPhoto
    Aperture
    Acorn
    Graphic Converter
    Intensify Pro
    Snapheal
I've not seen any reports indicating any issues with other apps either. I would strongly echo Larry's comments about App Store reviews, and reviews on download sites and forums up and down the internet. The great thing about the internet is that everyone has an opinion, that might also be the worst thing.
The problems with these comments are manifold: for a start, happy people are less likely to review, unhappy happy are much more inclined to. That's why we don't have thousands and thousands of posts on this forum from all the people who have no problems saying "look I have no problems". Unhappy people get cross and are more likely to express that anger in negative reviews.
Then what about the reviewer? What is his or her knowledge, experience and skill level? No doubt they are having problems, and real ones, but how do you know if their issues are problems with the app, their own inexperience, third party conflicts and so on. I've seen people on here claim the fact that iPhoto won't edit video is a bug. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of posts from folks on here who are certain they've found a bug, only for their glitch to be resolved. No review is worth anything unless you know something of the reviewer, his or her knowledge and experience.
So frankly, I never bother with those reviews on any such stores, not just iPhoto on the Mac App Store.
