Anyone have experieence with Pioneer DVR-K05PD Superdrives??

I'm really tired of the slow burning speed of the Matshita UJ-845E and thinking about replacing it with a Pioneer DVR-K05PD superdrive. Anyone have any experience with this model?
Especially when used with no-name DVD media. The best speed I can get from even reasonably good DVDs is 2x with this model Matshita
That pretty well answers the question. Supermarket DVDs are probably equivalent to what I buy in Asia.
From what I've been able to dig up after visiting lots of sites is that the K06 is slightly smaller in depth than the K05PD.
The K05PD also states it is csel so the solder mod required on the K06 shouldn't be required. Though some sites say you can boot from the K06 by holding the option key.
I deliberately haven't closed this thread yet so I can ad a final comment after installing and trying it out. There's a DVR-K06 I should be able to get at a good price in the next day or so.

Question for Mac Pro owners w/Pioneer DVR-112D superdrive: what firmware?
For those whose Mac Pro came pre-installed with the Pioneer DVR-112D superdrive, what firmware revision is it running?
The reason I'm asking is that I have an aftermarket 112D, bought from OWC, that I purchased for it's rip/burn speed advantage over the pokey, possibly riplock crippled, Sony DW-150A that came with my Mac Pro. This advantage was indeed gained, but at the expense of living with some quirkiness with the drive, namely the "two-ejects required" problem discussed here:

This quirkiness has gotten worse since the latest Mac Pro EFI firmware update on 09/27/07. Now if I'm watching a movie from a DVD in the 112D tray, any extended pause (and by extended I only mean more than a minute or so) causes an unrecoverable error in DVD Player and I'm forced to restart the DVD Player and restart the movie.
My suspicion is that this all has something to do with some (overzealous?) power management feature in Mac OS X that's not playing nice with the existing 112D firmware (I'd be interested in hearing any other plausible theories).
Currently, my 112D firmware is at revision 1.06. There a number of updated firmware revisions for the 112D circulating on the internet, PC centric, of course and mostly related to disabling region-locking etc.
I'd like to match my 112D firmware to whatever Mac Pro owners with a 'bona-fide' 112D enjoy, if it's publicly available somewhere.

Mitsubishi DVD-R DL video CPRM disks rejected by iDVD6 with Pioneer DVR-111
As the title says, iDVD6 rejects my Mistubishi DVD-R DL CPRM discs.
I am trying to burn a 7.5 gig video project. iDVD says "Can't burn to single layer disc" after insertion. I have a new Pioneer DVR-111 in a DP 2Ghz G5 3gig RAM.
CPRM seems to be the culprit.
Any ideas, suggestions welcome.
DP 2Ghz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9)'CPRM' was Pioneers attempt to put copy protection on writable media. It stands for Content Protection for Recordable Media. You will see a serial number code in the silver ring closest to the center that is used in CPRM.
None of the other manufacturers picked up on CPRM and I though it was dead. It shouldn't interfer with normal use of the media.
In general on the forum, although we recommend DVD-R for single-layer discs, we recommend DVD+R for double-layer discs.

Installing an Apple/Pioneer DVR-109AB 'SuperDrive'
Other World Computing has the Apple/Pioneer DVR-109AB 'SuperDrive' for $30 right now. Since my parents' iMac Flat Panel's drive is broken, this seems like a great way to replace it. One question, though - can I install this drive without messing up the pretty bezel/door on the front of the iMac?
If only this would work in my G5 I'd give them my 8x Superdrive...That should be fine but you may have to remove the new black/beige bezel and use the smaller on on the current drive and a spot of glue.
It's pretty fiddly to work inside an iMac G4 so you must be cautious. Always take anti-static precautions. Here are three options for guiding you through the procedure:

I'd advise reading the reports on the xlr8yourmac's drive database so get other people's experiences first.
You must replace the Thermal Paste when you close the iMac up or it will overheat.
It's probably worth replacing the PRAM Battery whilst you're in there as these have a finite life (once they fail to re-charge you may start to run in to snags - it's only a $5 part). You might also give consideration to upgrading the 'factory' RAM slot.

P35 Neo2-FR issues with Pioneer DVR-212 SATA ODD on Intel ICH9R
I need some help here, guys, as I am having weirdest issues with Pioneer DVR-212 on my mobo. Everything else is working fine - 4GB Geil DDRII 800, C2D 4600, P35 Neo2-FR, stock settings. I allready updated the bios to the lates revision - 1.8 and drive's firmware to 1.24 - and it does not help.
Basically, drive just locks up and stops responding during writing or even reading a DVD when it's connected to Intel SATA. Tried ImgBurn, Nero, InfraRecorder - same issue happens in Linux, too. When connected to Marvell SATA port - drive behave better and at least this lock up issues stop.
Drive is currently connected to SATA 5 port (1 and 2 are ESATA, 3 and 4 are HDD's and they have 0 issues, 5 is burner - tested other ports and 6 is empty). Drive just stops to respond. In BIOS, Inte l controller is in AHCI mode, but I disabled the port on which Pioneer is - as I read that optical drives have issues with AHCI. Drive is visible in Vista (32 bit SP1) but locking issues happen all the time. Are there some known issues with my motherboard and it's SATA controler? Or issues with this particular drive? Or maybe issues with AHCI mode? I repeat, this lock up issues go away when I connect it to Marvel SATA port - although I don't have the feeling it's working properly, it appears to be working with almost zero issues. I had a lock even now, while writing this - on 32% on reading an image... The rig is prime stable 24h, and works without restarting for weeks. This is the only issue - no issues with hard drives (SEAGATE 320 Barracuda 7200.10 3320620AS and a Maxtor 160GB STM3160811AS). Any help or ideas appreciated!!!Yes - here are details...

Photoshop cs6 won't allow me to highlight my existing text layers. I select the text tool and the text layer I want to edit, hover over text and each time I attempto to edit a new layer is created. Does anyone have experience with this problem?

There is a (beta)version of winzip8 that uses a cli (command line interface)
So, all you have to do is to implement a Runtime.getRuntime().exec(...) in your java program to call winzip8 and pass the zipfile path and the password.

Anyone have problems with apple ID's? I have the correct ID in my settings but when I try to update my apps my ID shows my first name and last name but not my ID? I'm not sure what else to do because I've made sure I have the correct ID in my settings! Anyone else have this issue?
I think its meant to show your name, not your ID.

Does anyone have experience with Virgin or Boost Mobile?
I have been with verizon for a long time...I have 4 lines with this service. I have since bought several phones off of craigslist or ebay just so I wouldn't have to be subjected to the tier plan. We use so much data it's crazy. I want the new Samsung Galaxy S4 so bad!!! Grrr! I've even thought about switching to Virgin Mobile or Boost Mobile. We pay so much for our phones now and I know of one guy who has boost mobile and loves it. Does anyone have experience with these providers?
BC's CRM is part of the package, Salesforce is of course more dedicated. That pretty much sum's up these sorts of use cases.

Does anyone have experience with using a Canon Vixia HF M52 Camcorder with Final Cut Express?
I'm looking to purchase a new camcorder that is compatible with my Mac OS X (10.6.8) that will work well with Final Cut Express 4.0.1 I have downloaded the camcorder support info from Final Cut Express that list many capital camcorders. I've used Sony tape based camcorders in the past. I'm looking for High Definition. I can stick with a tape based camcorder, but thought I would look at the Canon Vixia HF M52 as an alternative, which is listed as compatible. I would like to download directly from the camera to FCE. I film in the wilderness, like having an optical zoom of 20 or greater (yes, I use a small tripod). Does anyone have experience with the Canon Vixia? And if not, but you really like another camcorder that you can recommend, what is it?
The Vixia HF M52 is an AVCHD camcorder and should work perfectly fine with Final Cut Express 4 (4.0.1).
The published "camcorder support list" has never been up to date and I would not take it to be a definitive list of compatible camcorders.
One note, however, the Vixia HF M52 supports a number of different shooting modes. I suggest sticking with the AVCHD 1920 x 1080i / 60 fps mode for use with FCE. FCE does not support progressive modes except in 720p25/30 (which the M52 does not seem to shoot anyway); nor does FCE support any 24 fps modes. -

Does anyone have problems with iTunes movie rentals freezing in the middle of the movie, requiring a force quit, which causes your rental to disappear? This has happened multiple times to me recently. Last time Apple didn't refund my money after reporting the problem. I have been using iTunes for many years but am about to give up.

Don't confuse the threads here with 'typical' experience. Most of the stuff here is from brand new users, and those that have problems, and considering the 30 million pads in use, represent a very small sliver.
If you are having repeated crashes it is really pretty basic. You either have a physical problem with your pad, or you are using too much memory.
The iOS system is supposed to monitor memory, and shut down previously used apps automatically to free up memory for what you are doing now. That part of ios is not perfect, and if an app introduces an unexpected memory load, sometimes it gets over whelmed.
This happens, more often than not, when using safari with multiple windows open on graphic intense sites. It can also happen with a memory intensive game, and residual apps in the background.
Double tap the home key and take a peek at the recently used list, and shut them down completely, and often the problem goes away.
If the problem persists, you may have a software issue, and a trip to the genius bar may be in order. -

I have issues and have a Vertex3 made by OCZ. I am in active discussions with OCZ to find a resolution on their end. I have also contacted Apple Care and Intel and have run into dead ends.
However I am bringing my MBP for a repair, logic board replacement and will post the results after they change the logic board for me.

JaseWell, my My Genius appointment went very much as anticipated - it might well be a SATA III connection but Apple they do not support SATA III drives - least of all other people's.
Furthermore, they do not actually support anything other than the original configuration as sold - so given that I bought a 750 GB HD version, that is what I am stuck with - I asked Apple (London Regent St) if they could upgrade it to one of their own SSDs if I paid for it - they could not. They can only repair the machine to its original condition. They could not even advise me as to what Apple co-branded SSD I should look for to be compatible with this model - 512 Gb drives do come up on Ebay - Apple / Toshiba seems to be the normal one - but they couldn't advise if that would work or not. So it could be good money after bad.
Anyhow, they finally agreed to swap the cable, for a charge, so that will take two or thee days, plus the 5mins to do the job. I will post the results of the cable swap when I have it. They could not tell me whether it would be a different version of the SATA cable to the one already in the machine - but I asked to keep the old one so I can see if there is any visible difference.
It does seem strange that Apple support thunderbolt drives - which you can't even buy yet, but don't support SATA III in either Mac Pro or MAcBook Pro given that the full 3.0 standard was released on May 27, 2009.
Two and a bit years is a long time in tech terms.
