Anyone Have Tips on Avoiding Jaggies in 3D Renderings?

I'm noticing Jaggies in a rendering done with Image Based Light at the edges of bright reflections.  Obviously I'd rather not have such jaggies.
I have the feeling that the problem is because the light is so bright that the rendering is ending up with a clipped result at edges between extreme bright and dark.
I welcome any ideas for reducing such jaggies.  Click this and view at 100% original size to see them.

I think that the 3-dimensionality would be improved if the front of the ring had a little more contrast, and I agree that the text would be crisper without the red glow. The colours in the image are very pleasing, though.
Your feedback has been invaluable to me.
Better extrusion, more of a mirror finish, better "tower of Sauron" background, text only on the outside...
How's this?  A bit too dark maybe?
Remaining challenges...  Make the text seem sharper/brighter, create a more dramatic surface on which it rests (I almost hate to lose the glass reflections though)...
Edit:  OK, had the depth of field set wrong.  Fixing that, plus a bit of inner bevel makes the text a bit better looking.    Switching to 32 bit again (like before) allowed me to increase the range of brightnesses a bit.  Some fine tuning of the color to make the ring look gold rather than bronze or brass....  I'm calling the project done at this point.
Thanks for your help everyone!

  • Anyone have tips on how to reuse code?

    I just discovered that we can't easily export pages from one application to another. HTML DB has been around long enough that I'm sure many of you have found ways to re-use your code. Can you give me any tips/hints/best-practices?

    That is fine for things like LOV queries, region queries, processes, etc, but a lof of times, there is a need to duplicate the page layout from one application to another. Yes, there is a procedure posted on this forum, but it is very cumbersome and error-prone.
    Hopefully the next release of Apex will have a streamlined way to copy pages across applications.

  • Does anyone have tips for using iphone with Microsoft Outlook ?

    The functionality of the Iphone operating system with MS Outlook is very poor compared to a Blackberry.  Does anyone know how to:
    - Sort by name (the Iphone only sorts by subject, or "threads") ?
    - Sort Sent mail (the Iphone only sorts e-mails in the inbox) ?
    - Combine e-mails in the Inbox and Sent folders into one sort ... instead of sorting each mailbox separately, be able to combine them and then sort "?
    - Forward a meeting notice ?
    - Reply to all the invitees on a meeting notice ?

    iPhone =/= iPod. You could go Ford or the site for MS sync and probably find which devices are officially supported.
    Edit - So I just went too the site. It seems the compatibility varies between different configurations and between different models. I just looked at one, and the Ford Escape Hybrid with GPS system and all the stuff supports the iPhone 2.0. Mobiles are listed by carrier, so some may and some may not. So you would have to select what model Fusion you are considering and what options it may have.

  • Does anyone have tips on speeding up my mac osx?

    I have had it since 2009 and I know I need to get an external hard drive to back it up. In the meantime though, is there anyway I can "reformat" or filter out the junk?

    Well, you do want a backup ASAP, you can't really format without losing everything you have now, but...
    See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
    Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
    How much free RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
    Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
    In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Tips to avoid corruption in large documents

    Have been having problems with docs getting corrupted.
    On the verge pif giving up on nUmbers for this job.
    Does anyone have tips to avoid this happening - eg what things make files more likely to get corrupted?

    Thanks for the input Wayne. I can see that doing that will protect me IF a file gets corrupted. I just wondered if anyone knew what kind of activity makes it more likely for files to become fragile, slower, or likely to get into trouble.
    Is merging cells or particular kinds of naming of sheets or use of incorrect characters in sheet or file names going to cause problems, or very large cutting a pasting? Does anyone know HOW a file gets corrupted ie if it happens because of certain behaviour by me?

  • I am trying to install final cut pro 6 onto my mac but a message keeps coming up saying its doesnt support a powerpc, anyone have any tips please?

    I am trying to install final cut pro 6 onto my mac but a message keeps coming up saying its doesnt support a powerpc, anyone have any tips please?

    If you have an Intel Mac and have recently upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion; here is a post I made in another similar thread:
    I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
    Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
    However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between Final Cut Pro or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the screen from your other Mac to view and work FCP in the Mac Mini environment);
    2.  Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCP (such as FCP X) and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly.  There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:
                                  [click on image to enlarge]
    Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
    NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
    NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

    To enable the form to be signed in Reader you will need to open the form in Acrobat; goto Advanced>Enable Usage Rights and then save this copy of the form for sending out to the users.
    The user should then be able to edit and digitally sign the form. They can then email the signed/saved pdf as a browsed for attachment or via the email icon in the toolbar. Note - if you have created an email submit button on the form, then unless they have Acrobat they could only return an xml file.
    The other way to do this however is to create a dataset by 'distributing' the form. This time the Email Return button will send back a full version of the form. During the distribution setup you will have the option to email the form directly or to save it and send it later,so you can send to users as and when or even post it to a website or intranet.
    When you receive and open the returned form it will ask whether you want to add it to the predetermined dataset (or if you want to categorise the returns into geographical areas for example, you could create new additional datasets at this point). If the form is data heavy however, the dataset will become very large and unwieldy pretty quickly, but you can export the data from it (including signatures) in xml format and import this into an Excel spreadsheet.
    To simplify the Excel xml import process I'd recommend you carefully structure your form in the hierarchy (LiveCycle) into the order you would want the data items to appear in your spreadsheet and switch off those data items that you will not need by setting the default binding for the irrelevant fields to "None".
    Clear as mud? Hope this helps.

    Does anyone have problems with sent messages not showing in their Mail? I have two sent folders when really I only want one. Any tips?

    Not sure if this is a fix, but I tried sending myself a test email from only  the Bcc field, and lo and behold it now shows the Bcc field in all sent item previews;
    ...maybe leaving the 'To' field blank on purpose forced Mail to show it.
    Rebooted the Mail program, still there - rebooted the machine, still there. Hope this is still relevant and it works for you too - J.

  • Does anyone have any tips on how to maximize battery life of MacBooks ?

    I have just bought the new Macbook 15'' after my older macbook (2009 version) had gone through some issues with its battery. The battery life of my old mac became very short, maybe due to overcharging etc. Therefore I want to make sure I dont make any mistakes this time around and make good use of my battery so that it doesnt get damaged too fast. Does anyone have any tips on how to do this? Or perhaps any MUST NOTs (things that would be harmful to the battery), eg. overcharging?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    Macs do not have overcharging. The battery is stopped being charged when it is full, so do not worry about that.
    The most basic tip is to make regular battery cycles and do not disconnect the MacBook Pro from the charger until the battery is fully charged. Then, if you want, you can use your MacBook plugged in all the time, but remember to make a cycle at least once a month to keep the battery life. Also, do not let your MacBook turn off because its battery ran out of energy.

  • Does anyone have any efficient techniques for saving mail on more than one machine and in the cloud (I need offline access). Trying to avoid endless message copying.

    I've been in an administrative job at my university, in which I needed to be able to access lots of past email conversations.  I ended up saving *everything* religiously, by copying each email or conversation into an "On My Mac" folder on either my home or office machine, flagging it as copied, then unflagging it and moving it to a like folder on the other machine. As a result I'v now got a trillion folders for various aspects of my job, filled with quite a few messages that I probably no longer even need, but they're way too many to go through and delete one by one.  Unfortunately, I haven't made much use of the iCloud folders, but I'm so tired of having to essentially manually sync my stored mail in the manner I just described, that I'm thinking of starting to file everything to iCloud folders.  The downside of that is that obviously if the internet is down and a given folder wasn't refreshed before it went down, I won't have access to the saved mail.
    Moreover, I'm about to step down from the admin post -- within about 6 months a lot of what I saved won't be needed at all, and going forward, I won't need to save nearly the same quantity of messages for later reference.  I'd like to come up with some viable "triage" strategies for limiting the mail I do save.
    This is really just an open question:  Does anyone have any good mail filing and storage techniques that you'd be willing to share?  I'm especially interested in criteria you use for what you save and don't save, and where/how you save it.

    Well, the one set up on exchange 2k3 is now working fine, although no changes were made on either the iPhone or the exchange side, so that's fun, but it still is throwing errors when connecting to the other 2 exchange accounts. The common elements are that both non-functioning exchange accounts are google apps for business accounts. So is one of the ones that's working, by the way. The settings on both accounts are the same as the one that's working, and both worked fine before the 8.3 upgrade. I have no issue accessing both of these accounts on my ipad which is currently on 8.2.x. If it's not the iphone OS at fault, I'm at a loss as to what it could be.

  • Anyone have a tip or app for removing unwanted formatting from text on the iPad?

    I have text that was created in Word, sent via email, received on my iPad. I need to get all of the hidden formatting stripped out of this text before pasting into another application. The Notes app works in plain text, but it does not strip all the formatting out of text that has been pasted into it.  Anyone have a solution? I have looked at online services and searched for apps but can't seem to find anything that does this.

    I also am looking for a better email client. I need the ability to use folders and have email go directly to these folders when checking email. Just sending all email to only one inbox folder is just to confusing. I like the ability to search for email but this feature only helps to a degree. An example would be... I like all my email from tennis friends on my team to go to a separate email folder. I can do this in Microsoft Outlook and this feature makes it a lot easier to view things. Right now the email client is like a physical filling cabnet that has only one folder. The email client does try to group related emails together that I don't think works very well. So far not all email from one person are being grouped together. Some are but not all so I don't know what criteria it is using to determine what is grouped together. To work better I would like every piece of email from the same person to be grouped together. But then again wouldn't it be easer to just have a separate folder for each person or group of people. The reason for this is at a glance there are so many emails in my inbox that I sometimes miss an email. Using folders would allow me to check and scan my inbox a lot easier when there are only maybe a dozen email to view.
    Anyone else would like to see this feature?
    John

  • Avoid installing iTunes 11 if you are a Windows user. Calendars, etc will not sync with iPhone or iPad. Anyone have a fix?

    After installing iTunes 11.0, Outlook Calendars, etc will not sync with iPhone or iPad. Anyone have a fix?

    I'm also seeing weird sync issues since upgrading to iOS 7.  The sync issues started when I first upgraded to iOS 7 so I suspect that iOS 7 is to blame and the other system differences aren't an issue (i.e. I also upgraded to Windows 8.1 but it never worked properly when I was on Windows 8).  For me, the only way to "sync" all the smart playlists and music is to restore from backup and then the first sync seems to work.  However, I haven't tried that recently (I tried it a month back or so and it worked then) because it is ridiculous to have to restore your phone just to sync things!  Apple needs to fix the iOS 7 quality issues.
