Anyone here got a recommendation for a certificate provider?

Hi I am about to blow $550 on a 3 year certificate and I would like to know anyone's experiance with this kind of stuff. For me this is a lot of money just to put a 12 letter string on an installer.
Who is the best company for this kind of "product" and why.
Thanks for any advice you may have.

Have you tried using the device?  Many barcode scanners that are USB appear to Windows as a USB keyboard.  And when a barcode is scanned it will just "type" the characters of the barcode, usually followed by a return.
Just open notepad and put your cursor in it and scan a barcode.  It will likely show you what it says.  Now how do you interface this with LabVIEW?  The easiest way is to have a string control that has keyfocus, and a boolean that gets toggled when the enter key is pressed using the key navigation options.  Then when a barcode is scanned, it will type it in, and press enter.  Look for the value change on the boolean and read the string.
If it doesn't work this way you will liklely need to read many manuals on the device and read the data using VISA.

  • Anyone here got Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz (Year 2006) that could run Lion ?

Anyone here got Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz (Year 2006) that could run Lion ? I am wondering is that powerful enough to run Lion ?

    Hi, dzung.
I am experiencing no problems with the graphics card (same as yours) or anything else. Everything seems to be working fine. And it is perfectly fast.
Do note that after Lion installs that Spotlight re-indexes everything. So full email message content search won't work until that is done. But afterwards, it's fine.
I was surprised Barney is reporting that his is running warmer. Mine is actually running cooler. I was about to post a note on that. Usually the vent to the left of the keyboard very hot. But since installing Lion is is barely warm.
My battery is an Apple replacement though. After my warranty ended my old battery exploded! Not into pieces, but twisted and bulging outwards. I understand I was lucky it didn't bulge inwards, which would have hurt the insides. Apple gave me a discount on a new battery because of what happened to the old one.
And I did an update from Snow Leopard.

  • Has anyone here used Premiere CC for historical documentaries and similar archival-heavy projects?

Is anyone here using Premiere CC to edit a PBS-style historical documentary? I'm thinking of an American Experience episode or something similar. Something with thousands of photos and hundreds of low-res archival screener clips that will all have to be replaced with high-res masters for the online, etc.
I ask because I work as an assistant editor for this kind of show, and all the projects I've worked on have been in Media Composer 6.5 or MC 7, or occasionally in FCP 7. But I love using Premiere when I edit my own (non-broadcast) projects. And several producers I know are wary of staying with the discontinued FCP 7, don't like FCP X, and aren't thrilled with Media Composer either. So...I'm wondering if Premiere is a viable option for us.
Please note that I do NOT want to have a general discussion or flamewar here about which NLE is "best," whether Adobe's rental system is good or bad, or whether FCP X is brilliant or a disaster. I really don't want to talk about any of that.
Instead, what I DO want is to learn from those of you who have tried it, how well in practice does Premiere CC work in this kind of project? Specifically:
    1) Does it work smoothly with EditShare so multiple editors can work together?
    2) How reliable and straightforward is the offline/online workflow (so that screener footage can be replaced by master footage, etc.)?
    3) Associate producers and archival researchers often ask me for EDLs of the latest cut (which I clean up in MS Word to make more readable). How reliable is EDL export from a complex Premiere project?
    4) We often work with online houses that rely on Avid Symphony for color correction. Is that a no-go for a Premiere project? Or is there some way to get from Premiere into Symphony? If not, is Resolve the preferred tool?
    5) We typically keep a Filemaker Pro database to keep track of stills and archival footage. Can we import a lot of image metadata from Filemaker into a Premiere bin the way we do with MC 7?
    5) What other issues and problems have you faced in doing this?
    6) On the flip side, what are the real advantages?
Again, I'm interested in hearing others' personal experiences. I can read online a lot about how it's SUPPOSED to work. But in my experience, there are always quirks and issues that are not in the documentation that you can only learn through trial and error, or through asking here on the ever-valuable and helpful COW.
    Thanks in advance!

We do - but generally with a different workflow. I can't answer all your questions but a few thoughts. ps. We mostly do short —not feature length— projects.
    • For online we most often export the sequence (or a series of sequences) at PR444 with an EDL. Haven't found an online house primed for Premiere in a way that would make it easier than that. (again: generally 5-10min long projects.)
    • Premiere CC 2014 is a nightmare. CC was great. But recently upgraded to 2014 and have had nothing but problems related to the app crashing. It only seems to happen on projects that include either mixed media or large files that require caching (for us .MXF files.) Haven't received any helpful advice on how to fix.
    • Haven't used Avid in a while but the metadata works great for us in Premiere. The integration with Adobe Story is excellent: doc interview set-up, transcribe dialog, import into Story, synch with Premiere and: get an interactive metadata script that can be searched and clicked (word by word) to the related point in the footage.
    • Have also found that the integration with AE —turning a clip into an AE composition in the timeline with one click— is one of the more flawless features. Works great for quick clean-up or adjustments to footage.
    Hope this helps.

  • Does anyone have a good recommendation for a tutorial that will get me started quickly?

I just bought imovie for my macbook pro.  (I thought it was supposed to come with it)  Anyway, I am under the gun to complete a project.  Are there any tutorials that you would recommend for a beginner who needs to use imovie for basic functions for the time being?

What versions of OS X and iMovie are you running?
iMovie is part of the iLife suite and comes bundled with every new Mac.

  • Does anyone here use an eReader for Oracle documentation?

I've never owned or used one. I'm been looking into a low-end model, either a Kindle or Nook.
I'd like to get some input on how well they work, especially how easy/difficult is it to navigate through large Oracle documents.

I have a Kindle DX, which is larger than the standard Kindle, and it's very good for reading. It's not good for browsing/navigating pages quickly.
However, I would give battery life some consideration. Oracle .pdf docs on an iPad is good when you're flying, for example, and have access to electricity.
A Kindle can be used for weeks without recharging. Different uses..
BTW, a lot of the Oracle docs are now available as Mobi from the library page:http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/homepage
    Mobile Formats Available
Several documents are available in Mobipocket and ePub formats for convenient mobile viewing.
Links to these formats are available from the upper-right corner of associated HTML pages.which is very nice! Don't know when that happened, but many thanks to Oracle for that. Some of them are very readable, and will be great on my DX, but lookup documents like the SQL Languange Quick Reference is not well suited. It won't be very quick ...
I use Pdf's on my laptop and .mobi on the Kindle. I don't have an iPad or similiar yet, because of the relatively poor battery life.
Tip: follow the $10 offers, and other sales, on apress.com. You get all three formats when you buy a book there; you can download in .pdf , .mobi and epub.

  • Need a scanner recommendation for slides

(Not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes)
Any recommendations for a scanner that will do slides? I've got my father-in-laws slides from the last 20 years and want to scan them, but can't quite figure what scanner would do the job. I don't need (nor want to spend $) on an auto feeder, but would like to be able to scan at least 4 slides at a time. I've got old photos and negatives that I'll be scanning as well, and would spend up to $400. Thanks!!

YMMV but I just finished scanning over 1200 color 35 mm slides from the 60's and 70's for eventual prinitng and use in my scrapbooks. I have an Epson 4870 scanner and I can scan 40 slides an hour using it. It works well. The price is a bit more, $440 or so, but the advantages are worth it.
If you have 2.25 x 2.25 glass slides you will have to build your own slide holder to scan them.
I got the scanner originally for a major scanning project for the local historical society of about 1500 5 x 7 glass plate negatives from the early 1900's. It's doing good archival quality scans of these materials as well as archival scans of our other historical negatives, about 2000 nitrate negatives of our local area. It's a low end professional scanner but IMO worth every penny.
For info on digital imaging help you might want to take a look here:
    http://www.cdpheritage.org/
The best practices document on digital imaging is excellent for all the issues you will face and need to deal with. Geared towards historical collections it's still useful for personal stuff.
The Epson SW and scanner works well on the Mac. I just upgraded to Tiger, and it still is working, unlike many other items. <G>
I use Photoshop CS for histogram evaluations, image processing and thumbnail creation for the historical negatives but have just used the files as scanned for my scrapbook images.

  • Recommendations for Bluetooth GPS for N95

Has anyone got any recommendations for a Bluetooth GPS receiver (to improve the dire performance of the inbuilt one) available in UK?

I bought the Nokia N95 8GB for its 'all in one device 'convenience.
I bought an external Bluetooth GPS, not because the inernal was no good, or not accurate enough but because I did not want to destroy it with vibration and rain, strapped to the handlebars of my Yamaha XT225
I want to create tracks (kml?)that map out the roads, lanes and footpaths of Cebu, Philippines using my Motorbike, in places the car could not go.
I decided on the Wintec G-Rays2 (WBT-201). This is more than just a Bluetooth GPS, as it has a 'logger' function also (collecting up to 131,072 waypoints). It is also much quicker at acquisition than the internal GPS (34 seconds or if data is still in memory 4-33 sec).
Even in a car, the WBT-201 G-Rays2 unit, can be positioned on the dash, whilst from anywhere in the car, the N95 receives the NMEA0183 format data stream giving position, speed, altitude and time, together with estimated error and satellite status.
'Sports Tracker' works very well with this for receiving the data stream 'live'. Once 'captured' it has many 'export' formats of the captured information. Test 'Tracks' of the same 'Route' using the internal GPS and another time the WBT-201, show the external unit to be more accurate. Having said that, the internal GPS is actually pretty good at capturing the same track.
The only real 'negative' of the WBT-201, is the 'TMXTool' software (for configuring the settings, on the go, rather than connected to a PC), is for PPC, and not S60. However the 'TimeMachineX' software is OK for 'Windows' use.

  • Monitor Recommendations for Use with Captivate

Anyone have any monitor recommendations for use with Captivate? Size and resolution?

The formal adobe  recommendation is as posted 1024x768 is fine.
But, monitors are not that expensive, so for productivity and better work environment I recommend at least one wide screen 22" with resolution  1600X1200 or more  and that supports 1080 for video.
You need the  wide screen ( or  two monitors) so you can work with all the tools in one view.

  • Recommendations for xd card reader

I'm a new Mac user and just recently discovered that I cannot simply insert my XD memory cards into my laptop.  Before I go spend money, I was wondering if anyone has a good recommendation for a card reader that they've used with success?  I would really appreciate the help - thanks!

Card readers are extremely inexpense. They all seem to work just fine.

  • Is there anyone here that works for itunes support?

is there anyone here that works for itunes support?
I have waited for 39 hours for a response from support team with no reply.  I can get any of my credit cards to be accepted with itunes.  Somthing is wrong on apples side of things..been to apple store and they could not help either.  this is crappy.  I am one of the biggest apple fans but this is one side of apple that really *****.  CAN'T TALK TO A LIVE HUMAN FROM ITUNES?  Give me a break.

I agree completely endive!  I've been fighting for days trying to get some help with a technical problem and apparently, you can't get help from Apple without paying out the nose.  The problem I'm having is due to an update they recommended which I installed and now have no sound in itunes!
I too love Apple products.  I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, their customer service after the sale!  The are just as bad as Microsoft.

  • I have question about hooking up an external hdd to a time capsule and still have my printer hooked up as well. Anyone got any tips for me, how to do it and what brand of harddrive that will work best for me 1 or 2 TB

i have question about hooking up an external hdd to a time capsule and still have my printer hooked up as well. Anyone got any tips for me, how to do it and what brand of harddrive that will work best for me 1 or 2 TB

You just need a powered hub.. if you already use one then fine.
Plug in just about any external hard disk will work fine. Format has to be readable by the TC.. ie fat32.. or much better HFS+.. plug it into a Mac to prepare the drive.
Pick whatever size suits.. nowadays 2TB are most economical.
WD, Seagate have goobled up all the minor players.. so pick one.
Whatever suits your budget and asthetics.
NOTE.. The USB on the TC is fine for printers.. IMHO it is the wrong way to go with USB disks.. use the internal disk of the TC.. USB is less than half the native speed plugged into a Mac.. TC to USB is slow.. far slower than internal drive.. or using external drive as external.

The Retrospect you used way back when is no longer around. The company was sold and that company produced a new version of Retrospect - Retrospect 8.x
So, as you've been told, you would have to be running a Tiger system with an old version of Retrospect software (5.x or 6.x - you would need to know) assuming you can find the software.
As best I can remember you cannot extract files from a Retrospect backup except using the software since Retrospect did not normally make a file by file backup rather it created an archive of the files in the backup. I'm assuming that the EMC/Retrospect people have told you that old Retrospect backups are not accessible by Retrospect 8.x?
