Anyone is using the new Seagate Hybrid hard drives?

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/laptop-hdd/
I need to upgrade my 320GB 5400 RPM drive and I was going to go with a smaller storage 128 SSD. But these Hybrid drives look good and you can get 500 GB for about $120.
Any feedback? Do they work ok on a MacBook Pro?

Ok I just got a 3TB Drive from Fry's Electronics its the new seagate Go Flex. I took it out of its enclosure.. and put it inside the drobo.. Drobo Tells me Drive Failed. " only for the new 3tb drive." THAT ***!!!! I just paid $200 and it tells me drive failed... So i take it out and attach it to the original usb and it works fine direct to the computer.. My drobo is attached with firewire800 and 4 bays are with 1.5tb each. and the 5th one was going to be the new 3TB drive. HUmm.... Any ideas on how I can make this drive work with my drobo ??

I'll stay in this chat ... I answered in the other one ... I have a Sony digital Handycam ... from years ago.  I just got the LaCie and I think I formatted it for only to be used on my Mac ... how should I go about reformatting it to be HFS Extended like you said?

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

  • Where can I find the serial numbers of the defective Seagate 1T hard drives?

Where can I find the serial numbers of the defective Seagate 1T hard drives that were in iMacs?
    I tried Seagate site.
Not the iMac serial #, I know about the recall program. We are looking at a refurbished (not Apple) iMac & it has a Seagate 1T HD,  naturally, we want to know if it is one of the bad ones.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Using the new 3tb Western Digital drives in a 2 gen drobo

I am confused as to whether I can use a WD 3tb drive in my drobo. MY setup is as follows: intel 27 inch imac running snow leopard, i tunes 10, 2nd gen drobo with the latest firmware installed. I have my itunes library on the drobo and I stream all of my music and movies to my apple tv attached to my hdtv, all of the computers in the house can access itunes using homesharing and everything works great.
I have 3 bays of the drobo filled with WD 2tb drives and would like to add a forth drive. Given my configuration can I safely add a 3tb drive to the empty bay. I know that OS X will recognize the 3tb drive but it work in the drobo and will the full 3tb capacity show up on the drobo. Drobo's website is not clear and it says that they are coming out with a firmware update in the future. Will this firmware update be needed for all computers using a drobo or just those that have operating systems that will not recognize drives larger that 2tb?
Running out of space and would like to get the largest drive I can.
Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

  • After installing the new Mavericks my hard drive was wiped

Does anyone now if i can recover the contents of my hard drive prior to the update? I've lost alot!

Looks like I made a silly mistake. A new login account was created when I was following the steps to setting up the new update. All i had to do was re-login to my old account. After this experience I'll soon be investing into an external hard drive.
    Thank for your help.

  • Has anyone sucessfully used the new Winclone 3.2 to backup and restore  Bootcamp partittion with Windows 7 Ultimate on MBP with Lion 10.7.3?

Bought late 2011 MBP 17" with Bootcamp partition (Windows 7 Ultimate) and Lion OS 10.7.3
I am trying to make a backup of Bootcamp partition before I start using my laptop but it proves to be a difficult task.
I don’t have any installation disk for Windows 7 and I am afraid that, if a disaster strikes and I loose the HDD, my copy of Windows will be gone.
The only way to restore Windows partition according to what I read so far is to do the following:
    • Use Windows to backup data from BootCamp Partition
    • Reinstall OS Lion formatting full hard drive in the process
    • Use BootCamp Assistant to create BootCamp partition
    • Install Windows 7 on bootcamp partion
    • Use Windows 7 to restore data from backup file created in the first step
The only problem is that I don't any image or disk to re-install Windows 7. With Windows 7 I can create only 'repair disk' (for what it is worth) or system image but according to other users it would format the whole drive including OS Lion partition when reinstalling
Winclone 3.2 seems like the answer to my prayers but would like to hear from the users if it worked for them (most imprtantly, did the restore work?).

Got the response from Winclone regarding my confusion in step 18 of the procedure to create bootcamp backup.  The message displayed on the screenshot under step 18 can be ignored.  It refers to creating a Windows partition using Boot Camp Assistant but in fact this partition has already been created in earlier steps using Disk Utility.
I bought Winclone 3.3 as it promises to make backup and restore of Bootcamp partition with Windows 7 on it really easy, the steps to do this task are easy and well documented, and the owner of the program was very prompt responding to my queries.
I performed the following as an insurance against disaster prior to creating Winclone image:
Since my Windows 7 came pre-installed but without any installation disk I used Windows 7 to create 'Windows 7 system image' . From what I read on forums the system image created using Windows 7 apparently can't be used to easily restore Boot Camp partition (as it wipes out OS X in the process).  I created this image as a last resort backup rescue - some users reported that it can be used to recover Windows but the process is painful and involve a number of steps, swapping hard drives, and paid software to assist in the process.  I did not bother to make notes on this process - thanks to Winclone I am not suppose to need this backup if everything works as promised
I also created 'Windows 7 repair disk' prior to running Winclone.  Not sure what the value of it will be but again, this is something I did just in case I need it in the future
Then I installed Winclone 3.3 and created Windows 7 Ultimate Boot Camp image without any problems (on MBP running Lion 10.7.4).  My Winclone image file of 150GB Windows 7 Boot Camp partition prior to installing any programs and without any data on it ended up being nearly 8GB (saved to the external USB HDD).
I have not restored and don't plan to restore the Winclone 3.3 image just to test if it works (don't want to risk loosing my perfectly well running Windows 7 in case of any disaster).  So ultimately only time or experience of other users will tell me if I spent my money well buying Winclone 3.3.  I  know it worked for you JBLTZ so hopefully it will work for me when I need it one day.
    Cheers

  • Anyone use the backup to external hard drive working on Itunes

if so, does it kinda work like the backup to disk where you can basically just load it up on a new computer and it basically looks like it did when you left it?
or is it basically like copying your whole music folder over to an external hard drive and adding everything manually?

Yes, it works in my case

  • HT1338 hi has anyone been using the new OS Mountain Lion recently released?

I have had nothing but frustration with the new Mountain Lion release
First all my printer drivers have failed and I have had to re-load software drivers to get it to work.
Next the Safari version needed to operate this engine is not supported by my medical software company.  I am forced to go back on Safari 5 instead of 6.
I am patient but am losing my mind.

Start by removing your worthless "anti-virus" software according to the developer's instructions. That's as likely as not to be causing the problem. Reboot and test. Back up all data before making any changes.

  • How to use the  ipod as external hard drive???

I went to the windows explorer page and checked under my computer and saw my ipod as the "E" drive. Is the procedure of storing files, be it word or excel or photos as simple as dragging them into the ipod E drive location???
I have tried doing this and they seem to have been copied into the ipod, however when I checked into the ipod they were not there...anywhere. I highlighted the "ipod(E)" drive and created a new folder named "my documents" and then dragged some word files into it. I then detached the ipod from my computer and checked the ipod for the files and the new folder "my documents" and could not find them.
When you use the ipod as an external hard drive are all the documents and files you drag into it hidden???
Is there any way to view word documents?? How do you store them?
When using the ipod, is the only viewable information that comes up onto the ipod screen, info from the "itunes" page??
    cheers

You can't view any of the files on the iPod while using the iPod. You can only see them through the computer. I guess if you want, you can put the files into the "Notes" folder on the iPod and see them using your iPod, but you can only open .txt files up to 4kb big.

  • Using the iPod as a Hard Drive

I have been using my 30GB iPod Video as a hard drive and decided to make a backup of everything important in case something happened to my iBook. After the initial backup, I decided to delete that file off the iPod and run the backup again just to see if I could do one easily whenever I thought of updating the backup file.
After deleting the backup file from the iPod as I normally would on a computer, Backup tells me that the iPod doesn’t have enough space when trying the backup a second time.
It’s almost as though the iPod kept the original backup file on there and has it taking up space, but I just can’t see it.
Anyone know how to fix that?

Don't know if it worked for the original poster, but it did for me! Thanks. I got all my space back!

  • Mac OS wont recognize  new Seagate SATA hard drive...

My original seagate SATA 250G drive failed, trying to replace it with a Seagate 2G SATA, booting up snow leapard from the disk, Disk utilities doesn't detect the drive at all, so I can't reformat or partition it.  Read some info from seagate, but don't understand why i might need a host adapter card if the computer already had a SATA drive in it already... Any suggestions before I give up?  It is an old mac pro, first or second gen, used it all the time and has never failed me until now.  Both the broken drive and new drive are internal drives..

You should not need a Host adapter to install a SATA drive in a SATA bay.
But any mis-alignment at any stage can cause the drive connector to hit, rather than engage the backplane connector. The drive connector must fully mate with the connector at the back of the bay.
    • You must snug, but not over-tighten the screws at each position with the exact correct #0 Phillips screwdriver to get comparable torque on each screw.
    • The drive must then be inserted so that each roof tang catches the correct part of the sled. If one is bypassed the drive will be cocked in the bay and not mate.

  • Cannot see new Seagate 1TB Hard Drive on SBS 2008 R2 (Onboard RAID)

This is probably an easy setup, but I just want to make sure that I am doing this correctly and not mess up the current Raid Array.
This is on a Intel S5000VSA server motherboard. It has an Onboard 6 port RAID card. Currently there are three SATA HDDs connected to the right of the Onboard RAID (if you are looking at the Motherboard directly). There is another connection that
least to an external SATA port that is connected to the left of the Onboard RAID.  My boss purchased a 1TB Seagate and want is connected onto the server as its own drive; not connected to the current RAID array 0.
I have installed the new 1TB Seagate to the next open port next to the eSATA connection. When I start up the server, during the boot up I see the 3 hard drives (the three original and the new 1TB). When the Windows SBS 2008 R2 finally boots up and I open
the Disk Management, I do not see the new Hard Drive that I installed; I only see the existing C: and external BackUp. I tried to rescan the drives but no go.
Do I need to set up a new Array for the new 1TB Drive?
Just to look, I did launch the RAID Bios and confirmed that the RAID does see the new Hard Drive and has a READY status. I know I do not want to do a New Configuration, because it will clear the current configuration. When I select the view/add configuration,
I can set the new Hard Drive status from READY to Onlin A01-00. When I save and exit, then look at the physical disk status again, it reads as ready.
I don't think I have to add the new Hard Drive as a new array, but I could be wrong. I wanted to get some input before I do anything else further.

After some looking around, I found a Document about the RAID Controller on the motherboard. Instead of adding the new Physical Drive as a Virtual Drive in the RAID Bios screen, I found that I was able to download an Intel Console version that was more user
    friendly.
I did add the new physical drive as a new Array and once that was done I was finally able to see the new 1TB in Disk Manager.
    Thanks for that Assistance Al.

  • I have 2 macs and 2 PC laptops in my home wireless network.  Can I use the Airport/Time Capsule hard drive to back up all 4 machines?  I know that I will have to use different back up software on the PCs, but is it possible over the wireless network?

I have 2 macs and 2 PC (Windows 7) laptops in my home wireless network. (The iMac is hardwired via ethernet to the Airport/Time Capsule; the others are wireless connections using Airport).  I want to use the hard disk drive in the Time Capsule as a network backup drive for all 4 computers.  Is this possible?  Could someone help me by telling me how to configure it?  I know I will have to use different backup software in the 2 Windows 7 Laptops?  Do I need to use the Windows backup software, or can I use a third party program like Acronis True Image?  Thanks in advance for the help

It is your fault, pondini.. all your fault.
I read of all the things that go wrong restoring Time Machine backups.. particularly stupid things like mail, photo libraries don't go back.. etc. And looking through the incredible number of issues people have here, when their Mac finally takes a dive how hard it is to restore.
I restored a test hard disk from a TC.. and it takes ages and ages to even make up its mind to start.
I worked in computer support for ages, but not Macs.. so my experience is ghost.. ghost images.. on large commercial server setups, can stream restore to multiple computers at once.. even doing it computer by computer the image is simple as network boot to restore. But ghost went the way of Symantec.. sigh!! And was destroyed.
A product like clonezilla, Free linux boot cd.
    http://lifehacker.com/5078397/clonezilla-backs-up-and-restores-your-disks
Can backup a Hard disk in just about any format.. yet to try it on a Mac to a TC.. but I will. Boot from CD.. instead of your lost Lion partition which no longer exists (because the hard drive had to be replaced) and the DVD they no longer give you, and restore the entire hard disk in a couple of hours .. to the exact image at the point you made the clone.. in any format, with any partitions.
My bet is that it will kill TM .. but you could be right.
It is just the prospect of all those permission changes, photos and mail libraries etc that worry me.
