Anyone know a good USB 3.0 hub?

For my Mac Mini? I have used 3 of my 4 usb ports....

A good hub would have its own power supply so there wouldn't be excessive load on
the computer, and it could add up to 4 ports, and probably be under $20 if on sale.
You could look at OWC online (otherworldcomputing) among other mac-centric sites of
long standing and good repute. Used to be several product names available, some in
retail stores that sell better computer product accessories.
Most good ones do not require drivers and will power USB3.0 speeds
if attached to the computer's USB3.0 port. There may even be a nice
one online at the Apple Store pages.
If plugged into a USB port on an external drive that may sport additional ports or
keyboard port, the speed would probably be well under 2.0 in a slower range.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Does anyone know how good the SAMPSON USB mic is compared to...

Does anyone know how good the SAMPSON USB mic is compared to having a dedicated audio interface with lets say a good condenser mic?
I am going to be doing some vocals and need a very good quality recording.
It just seems pretty simple right now to use a high quality USB.....
Rather than getting an interface (which I will be getting down the road)
but how "high" is the quality of the Sampson USB mic? Say even compared to
an AKG condenser?? Will I get 90% of the way there compared to an AKG mic and an dedicated audio interface (like the firepod or m-audio-410)
and also if anyone knows will the difference in audio interfaces affect the actual recording quality by a great difference?
    thanks, technoreid

I have a Samson C01U USB Studio Condenser mic that I use most of the time.
    PRO
To be honest it's really a lot of bang for the buck (about $90 at Sam Ash Music) and incredibly simple to use.
It's well-built (the screen is very rugged, and it has a good amount of heft to it.
Given that GB 3 has a lot of decent vocal presets (and software outboard equipment) in it now (with radio/podcast settings and voice over stuff) you can get it to sound pretty good. In that sense, I think it is an ideal podcast or voice over mic.
It's easy to use, just like GB itself. I am a BIG fan of using equipment that is intuitive and does not thwart the creative process, and the Samson fits the bill. Pull it out of its storage bag; plug in the USB cord into the mic and then into the USB port of your Mac and Voila! you're in business.
    CON
You are limited by the length of a USB chord, whereas XLR cables into a firewire analog to digital piece of outboard gear will have XLR in, and XLR cables are the standard for long distances mic usage.
One track, mono at a time. There is no way (that I know of) to effectively do simultaneous stereo recording. But if you are using GB as a composition tool (as I do) you do most of your instruments in GB and only vocals (and maybe guitars) live and only one at a time.
You get what you pay for. Is the Samson C01U as good as a Neumann U87 into a tube-based Analog to digital preamp? Is it the way I would record vocals for a major record release? No. But the difference isn't like listening to a scratched 78 rpm shellack record versus a digital recording either. For most applications, the difference is minimal. How much? I don't have the testing instruments to quantify.
But then again, there's something to be said for spending $90 versus $3,800 (SRP) for a U87 and $2,300 (SRP) for a PreSonus ADL-600 Stereo Hi Volt Tube Mic Preamp......

I'm traveling to London for the summer, does anyone know a good power adapter/converter for my MacBook Pro? I know there's the Travel Adapter Kit but it's only for iPhones, iPods, iPad, etc.

    Apple World Travel Adapter Kit
The World Travel Adapter Kit includes the Apple USB Power Adapter, USB Cable and six interchangeable AC adapter plugs for use with iPod, iPhone, and iPad. The adapter plugs can also be used with Apple MagSafe Power Adapters, Portable Power Adapters, and AirPort Express, so you can plug your power adapter into most electrical outlets around the world.

  • Anyone know a good place for Sony camcorder batteries?

This is a bit off-topic for this forum, but does anyone know a good online store where I can order spare batteries for a Sony HDR-SR5 camcorder? One battery isn't going to cut it. I know some of you on this post have an SR5.
The Sony store is waaaay too expensive, and all the off-brand online stores seem too dogdy.
    Thanks,
    Otto

I wouldn't expect a big drop too soon. That's a lot of RAM density on a small board. Unless there's a major increase in demand I wouldn't expect much of a drop in price.
No doubt there may be cheaper prices than Datamem's. Although their prices are usually competitive, they are not always the cheapest. But they do offer good service, fast delivery, have a good return policy, and experience with Macs. My recommendation is based on a 10 year history with them which has been 100 percent satisfactory.
But $500 for a marginal 1 GB of RAM is a lot. I'm not convinced it's enough to warrant going from 2 GBs to 3 GBs. I have 2 GBs in mine and it seems perfectly fine for my needs.

And the fact that it's was a vertical, slow-moving, dead-tree, subscription-driven, ad-based business model has nothing at all to do with it... Mac mags died a long time ago, for good reason - get over it
I guess I don't really agree with that. There are still a few Mac magazines around. Interestingly, they are often magazines from the UK. I find it funny that there isn't a big enough market in the US to support homegrown Mac magazines, but they continue to print them in the UK with a much smaller market, and ship them over here. But I digress. I do think the points you cite for the demise of Mac magazines are all incorrect. The same system works just fine for any number of other magazines. The difference is the reader...
    Google is your friend.
Now I greatly disagree. Not only is Google not your friend, but it (or rather the internet - it gets hard to tell the two apart anymore) is turning into a massive source of disinformation. There was a time when programmers were expected to read the manual, read magazines, and try things out in order to figure out how to do something. Now, we are expected to just Google it.
Well, I do Google things on a regular basis and I find the advice dispensed to be wrong or otherwise useless more than half the time. Google is on the way out. Information networks are the wave of the future. That is why people come here. Apple Discussions is more reliable than Google.

  • Does anyone know a good converter from quicktime movies to dvd format?

Does anyone know a good converter from quicktime movies to dvd format?

I'm guessing that your using One Step DVD . This will only work with one movie at a time.
Create a new project and all you should have to do is drag your movies from your movie folder onto your iDVD project. You can add as many movies as you like but obviously you can't exceed the maximum total DVD size.
Encoding can take a long time depending on the original file format, but you should be able to use pretty much any file format you can play with Quicktime.

    thank you
I've never heard of a good, current book on PHP which is
    free. You'll find
hundreds of free tutorials and articles, but usually when
    information gets
collected into book form, people need to be paid and it's not
    going to be
    free.

It all really depends upon what you want. Since you are asking for free games, just download them and try. It does not cost anything.

  • What's a good USB 3.0 hub?

I've got a late 2012 Mac mini. Mavericks OS (10.9.4). I have lots of USB devices, most of them of the 2.0 variety, a couple 3.0. I bought an inexpensive "USB 3.0" hub, and it causes the Mac not to wake from sleep mode. Instead it just powers off, and I have to unplug it from the wall before it will reboot. So I've gone back to my old 2.0 hub for the majority of my gear, but I've got a couple of drives that want 3.0 connections to function efficiently.
From what I can tell, it's the mixing of USB 2.0 and 3.0 that is causing problems. I'm not sure if the ports on the mini are paralleled, or are on separate power and driver chips. But so far, I can keep 3.0 devices plugged into the computer and 2.0 into my hub. That's fine 'til I need to plug in a 3.0 flash drive. I cannot make it work with the two hubs - I still have the same "no wake up" issue, unless nothing is plugged into the 3.0 hub. SO...
Who makes a robust USB 3.0 hub? The Belkin sold at the Apple website has roundly terrible reviews. I'd rather not be a guinea pig again. Does anyone have serious experience with these? It's not enough that you have one and it works. I'd like to know that you understand the workings a bit better than I do, and maybe can even explain to me what might be causing this incompatibility.
    Thanks.

  • Good USB 3.0 hub to work with rMBP?

Can anyone recommend a good functioning and durable USB 3.0 hub that will work with my last year 15" rMBP?  I am running OSX 10.9.
I may also try to sometimes use it with my Haswell MBA.  I want to plug two or three HDD's into the hub. I also want to plug my Dell 27" U2713 USB 3.0 hub into this new hub (as a hub chain).   It is really confusing trying to get a good one since there are so many to choose from...  Thanks!

Read the reviews for each one you are interested in.  This should help you narrow it down.

  • I would like to know if a USB 2.0 Hub will function well in a 2014 rMBP USB 3.0 Port?

I just purchased a rMBP and I need 4-5 powered USB slots for devices. There have been many reported problems with USB 3.0 Hubs on the rMBP. I want to know if anyone who was having problems was able to return to using a UBS 2.0 Hub?
Will a USB 2.0 Hub function through the New rMBP's USB 3.0 port? Will there be spontenous errors and freezes?
My devices are all USB 2.0

I knew it was several years old, I had one and never got it to work with my iPhone 3G. I use the Kensington, looks like half a ball, but just about any new one should work. Keep in mind if you connect a lot of devices that are pulling power it may affect it.
Polls are a violation of the Terms of Use here so I wouldn't post one. You might check with http://www.iLounge.com and read the reviews there.
