Anyone know of a Firewire to USB 2.0 Converter?

I've searched all over the internet. Seems like a handy thing if you have an older Mac (like the iMac I use as my music server) w/o USB 2.0.

I'm thinking it's possible but would cost more than your average person would want to pay for it.
The "device" would either have to be "smart" (since USB uses a CPU for arbitrating transfers) or use the new USB on-the-go (USB with extra smarts to make up for the lack of a CPU) and still have to have circuitry for communicating properly with the FW side. The R&D alone might make it quite the headache and the market might be too small to go after.

Does anyone know how good the SAMPSON USB mic is compared to having a dedicated audio interface with lets say a good condenser mic?
I am going to be doing some vocals and need a very good quality recording.
It just seems pretty simple right now to use a high quality USB.....
Rather than getting an interface (which I will be getting down the road)
but how "high" is the quality of the Sampson USB mic? Say even compared to
an AKG condenser?? Will I get 90% of the way there compared to an AKG mic and an dedicated audio interface (like the firepod or m-audio-410)
and also if anyone knows will the difference in audio interfaces affect the actual recording quality by a great difference?

I have a Samson C01U USB Studio Condenser mic that I use most of the time.

To be honest it's really a lot of bang for the buck (about $90 at Sam Ash Music) and incredibly simple to use.
It's well-built (the screen is very rugged, and it has a good amount of heft to it.
Given that GB 3 has a lot of decent vocal presets (and software outboard equipment) in it now (with radio/podcast settings and voice over stuff) you can get it to sound pretty good. In that sense, I think it is an ideal podcast or voice over mic.
It's easy to use, just like GB itself. I am a BIG fan of using equipment that is intuitive and does not thwart the creative process, and the Samson fits the bill. Pull it out of its storage bag; plug in the USB cord into the mic and then into the USB port of your Mac and Voila! you're in business.

You are limited by the length of a USB chord, whereas XLR cables into a firewire analog to digital piece of outboard gear will have XLR in, and XLR cables are the standard for long distances mic usage.
One track, mono at a time. There is no way (that I know of) to effectively do simultaneous stereo recording. But if you are using GB as a composition tool (as I do) you do most of your instruments in GB and only vocals (and maybe guitars) live and only one at a time.
You get what you pay for. Is the Samson C01U as good as a Neumann U87 into a tube-based Analog to digital preamp? Is it the way I would record vocals for a major record release? No. But the difference isn't like listening to a scratched 78 rpm shellack record versus a digital recording either. For most applications, the difference is minimal. How much? I don't have the testing instruments to quantify.
But then again, there's something to be said for spending $90 versus $3,800 (SRP) for a U87 and $2,300 (SRP) for a PreSonus ADL-600 Stereo Hi Volt Tube Mic Preamp......

Is there a pattern to the time of day or other detail that may be
traced back to a OS X system cause of this odd phenomenon?
Are there any copies of system files on any of the attached USB
external drives? Any libraries, such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc?
Once the drives are indexed by Spotlight, are their permissions
ignored by the OS X? Content, if neutral, should not affect the
wake or sleep cycle; especially if they're ignored by the OS X.
Could there be a bad cable or other component? If so that would
be a difficult process of elimination to detect it. Usually replacing
most suspect components in the USB stream (external to Macs)
is a rote way to mechanically test that idea; & not 100% sure.
Does the equipment all have a good ground to the utility or house
electrical field? An intermittent ground may affect more than sleep.
Hard to say at this point. Maybe a late-night talk radio guru on
remote viewing could peer into your situation and sleuth it out?
Sorry to have run out of ideas, but the process must be electrical
& mechanical to some extent. - Or perhaps odd software inspired.
Do you have any phone-home spyware items inside, just jumping
at the chance to spill your information? Little Snitch may help.
PS: Perhaps the computer needs to go into Apple & have a genius
or product specialist at AASP test the unit thoroughly... BlueTooth?

Would anyone know why my macbook says "USB device is drawing to much power" when I have my iPhone 4 plugged in?

When I have my phone plugged into either one of my USB ports, my computer sometimes will say "USB device is drawing to much power, to prevent damage the ports been disabled until the device is unplugged" or something along those lines...i was just wondering if anyone knew why...it does it to both ports.

Heck' if you only need 1 or 2 ports it's cheaper to just buy a good Quad Interface External HD to use as a Hub and get the bonus HD for Storage and Backup.

Does anyone know the sound card specs (USB/Optical out) for the Macbook Pro 15 Retina?

I have looked everywhere and have just given up. The "technical specs" aren't very technical at all. Anyway, I have mine hooked up to a Cinema display, so the Thunderbolt and one USB are used on the left hand side. That leaves just one USB for 3 printers, one scanner, my Griffin PowerMate and my DAC. So I was wondering if using the Optical (Toslink Mini) out in the headphone jack might be a plan if I can find a DAc that deosn't need the USB for power AND if the optical out is 24/192.
I am just starting to set the laptop up as a replacement for my Mac Pro Desktop so wondering what to do here.

I've just started to look into an issue I'm having with my DAC and my new iMac. There are some serious issues with using a DAC with USB3.0, so you may not even be able to use your DAC on your USB port. I'm getting a lot of popping noises when going through my USB 3.0 ports. I've had some success my hooking my DAC up to a UDSB hub (which is USB2). Problem there becomes power supply issue, whereas the problem with USB3 is data transfer.

Firewire to USB 2.0 converter??

Do they sell any little boxes that can turn a firewire into a USB 2.0 port? I use my iMac often for ipods and transferring large digital photos. Problem is the USB 1.1 is soooo slow. I know I can't upgrade 1.1 to 2.0, but is there a way to take the fast Firewire and "convert" it to 2.0?

Does anyone know....I have a original dock that is hooked to my Mac via USB

This is a dock from a long time ago (the date on the bottom says 2003) Does anyone know if this provides charging power on the 5V USB and 12V fire wire pins of iPods. The reason I would like to know is I am thinking about buying a 2G iPod Touch and would like to know if I will need to buy a new dock or not.
I know that the dock adaptors will not fit, but I have been using this dock to charge my Nano and Classic and it seems to work fine, its just not that snug in the dock.

I suspect not. If your dock is this one http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26107 it charges using firewire.
I have an older dock that does work. The model # on the bottom is A1153.

I'd also like to know if you can convert USB 2.0 to Firewire. I've seen some hubs around the $40 dollar range, but it is not clearly stated if they will convert, or if they are just hubs.
I recently bought the new MacBook Aluminum and it has no firewire port. Problem? My external hard drive is firewire. So I can no longer access my backup drive or backup data on that firewire drive without having to jump through some hoops.

Does anyone know how I can copy photo and video files from the Photo's app on my Macbook, to a USB stick or other external back-up?

I've updated the software on my Macbook to the most recent version; regretting it now; and iPhoto has now become the Photo's app.
The problem is I can no longer back up my photo and video files taken on my phone, saved to my mac, by copying them and saving them on a USB stick or other external hard drive.
I could easily do this with iPhoto, but now Photos app does not let me copy the files when I select them.
Does anyone know if there's a way to save, copy or back-up my photo's and video files: prefreably one that doesn't involve iCloud, as I don't feel like paying for more storage; there must be some way to access those photos/videos from my iPhone to save on another source?

Select the photos and videos in Photos and use the command "File > Export" and select a folder on your USB stick to save the photos to.

I don't think you're likely to find a set of external speakers that come with a microphone and plug directly into a USB port. There are USB audio cards that look like tiny flash drives but have microphone and headphone ports in them, to which you can connect a typical two-plug Windows PC headset with a microphone, or else you can connect external speakers and a stand-alone microphone. Those adapters typically cost under $10. I don't know anything about the quality of sound that can be expected from them.
I have a Griffin iMic, which is much the same idea but larger, a bit more expensive (retail~$40), and perhaps delivers somewhat better sound quality (I hope so, but I don't know because I've never had occasion to try one of the little ones).
