Do a media manage of the sequence converting the files to the appropriate HD format making the clips offline. Then simply reconnect the offline clips to the HD clips. There may be issues in the file names, but they can usually be worked out either with the naming options in media manager or renaming your hd files. There are many utilities that allow you to batch rename files.

I don't recommend you send the iMac in a checked bag. Might get damaged.
Check the airlines website for carry on guidelines.
Or, if you have the original box that the iMac came in, if you have someone who can pick up the iMac for you, send it ahead Fed Ex and insure the package.
Just make sure the display is covered to protect it. A blanket perhaps.

Your Windows friend should ask in a Windows forum why his email client won't open attached jpg files. We have no idea what email client he is using or how his Windows security is configured.

Huge thanks for your response Michel. I apologise for the delay in getting back to you. I have done as you suggested, the details are pasted below. Clearly there are some applications I need to remove and no doubt my HD could do with a 'spring clean'. My Mac 'Safe Booted' when I turned it on this morning.
I use many different softwares, some web-based. The decision to upgrade to OSX Yosemite is because I was unable to attend a Webinar this week using GoToMeeting downloadable software. GoToMeeting have upgraded their system and my OS is no longer supported. Other websites like VImeo no longer support my version of Safari. I tend to use Chrome if Safari isn't compatible.

I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. However I have noticed that my MacBook Pro becoming ‘slow’ over the last 3 weeks and therefore might have some issues that need to be resolved before I even consider installing OSX Yosemite. The only content that's associated with your account are songs, etc. that you've purchased from the iTunes Store. Everything else (material imported from CD, bought from other sources like Amazon, etc.) is stored on your computer (or your mom's). So, even though you've logged into iTunes with your Apple ID you are still seeing the content of your mom's library (which implies that your running iTunes under the same Windows user account). I believe that iTunes Match (which I don't have - its an add-on service that you have to pay a subscription for) allows your "local" content to be uploaded to Apple's cloud servers and shared in the way that you describe. if your computer and your mom's are on the same network you may be able to access your songs by turning on network sharing (not Home Sharing) while both machines are on and running iTunes.
