Anyone like their Macbook Retina for gaming?

I have the 15". I keep getting worried and regretful about my purchase. I love the laptop, but does anyone think it is good enough for gaming? I do 1920x1200 usually. Is it good enough?

It is reality.
As ds store has stated "Because of this there isn't the selection of games on Mac's as Windows, because eventually gamers realize this and move to Windows instead."
I am one of those that has moved to PC Windows for games. In addition to the Towers there are Gaming Laptops for those who want mobility. While only mildly upgradeable compared to the towers they easily surpass the Macs in specs and at less cost. I did a comparison of the new MacBook Pro Retina and a Clevo P150EM and have pasted it below.
The options available with the Clevo are too numerous to list, so you can check them out at this link.

  • Anyone have their MacBook Pro repaired at an Apple Store?

I'm reading about people who're getting one-day turnarounds in sending their MacBook Pros in for logic board replacement; in my case, the Geniuses at the Apple Store told me I'd get faster turnaround if I let them do it instead, in-house. It's been a week. No word yet.
Anyone else have major service done in-house at an Apple Store versus send their laptop in? What kind of turnaround did you have? Should I be concerned, at this point?

    Hi Jay,
It could be for the fact that they might have to order some parts which might be on back order. If i needed a repair i would take it into the store as well, the advantage being:
-At least when you pick it up you have the option to see there and then whether there is a damage done, whether the repair is done as requested and be able to refer back to the geniuses if need be.
Just give them a call if you are woried but i am sure that it will work out fine.

  • Rebuilding my old MacBook Pro for gaming

    Hello all!
I currently own an old out of use MacBook Pro. The harddrive is about to go and I'm
At no risk of voiding and warranty.  My question is this.
I would like to build a powerful computer than can be run as a desktop designed for gaming. However i would like it to run Mac OS
I was thinking maybe if I just install a new gpu, graphics card, harddrive, and increase ram and cooling power. I could make it into a makeshift macbook gaming system.
Would this be an okay option, or am I better off just building a new one from scratch
And trying to install Mac OS Onto it.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Eric

Most laptops don't have upgradeable GPUs or cooling systems, and many don't have upgradeable CPUs either.  So upgrading components to convert it into a gaming laptop is highly unlikely.
The EULA of Mac OS X only allows it to be installed on Apple hardware.  Building your own "Hackintosh" is not within the terms of the agreement and not supported by Apple, and as such, I don't think it can be discussed here on these forums.

  • Is the New Macbook good for gaming?

I am about to buy a new MacBook Pro. I was planning on getting the MacBook Pro without retina with the i7, 1tb HDD and 8gb of ram. I am wondering if this will work for gaming. I am going to bootcamp with Windows 7 as soon as I get it. Is this a good idea or will I have problems with graphics or any other issues?

Okay, so here's my opinion on this as I have the MacBook you're planning to purchase. I have the 13 inch which means without the graphics card.
It's a decent gaming machine. It's okay for gaming here and then.
As OGELTHORPE mentioned, Mac's aren't meant for gaming. The machine will just get really hot, and won't give you the best performance.
Now as for me, I came from a 2008 sony vaio. The increase in performance was amazing, but for me.
So, go with a macbook air, and then build your own desktop. It's going to be much more beneficial. Although seeing your budget though, you won't be able to build a super powerful gaming PC, rather a standard, with simple graphics card gaming machine.
However, it's better than buying a MacBook Pro and gaming on it in my opinion.

  • About to purchase a Macbook Pro for gaming!

I'm about to purchase a MBP and wanted to know which version do you recommend?  And also, how much memory and flash storage will I need?
I will be using Bootcamp to run windows and I will be using the laptop for gaming - downloading games off disc and/or digitial.  In doing research, seems as if the MBP w/Retina (which has the Intel Iris Graphics) would provide better game play?  Is this the case or will the MBP work just as well (with the Intel HD 4000 graphics)?  And how much memory and flash storage would you recommend? (I will be playing/downloading games off steam, on cd, etc...)
Thanks...and obviously I'm an amateure techy!

In general, laptops are not gaming machines, but it's possible to do some gaming on them. Also, usually for good gaming experience you need a separate video card, integrated graphics are not so great for gaming. So, if you had to choose a mac for gaming, imo, you should go for an iMac or MBP which has discrete graphics card.
Why is that? Because the workload of rendering 3D graphics is taken by the GPU and the CPU (sometimes distributed between them, depending on how the game was developed). The GPU specs also determine which graphics settings will be supported in games. For example, if you want this mac to be able to play a game which will be released next year, you might want to check which version of DirectX the GPU supports so that it doesn't become obsolete fast. Most game development is done for Windows, so they optimise game graphics mostly for DirectX.
RAM doesn't help much. I have 16GB of RAM (with integrated Intel graphics), but that doesn't make my macmini run games >50FPS at the highest graphic settings. The graphics card is the most important here.

  • Has anyone replaced their MacBook Air Late 2010 battery?

Looking at the iFixit replacement part, is it better to have Apple do it, or is it easy enough to handle?  Does anyone know what Apple charges for battery replacement?

    Here is the price list:
    Ciao.

  • Retina vs Non Retina for gaming?

I just got the Retina Macbook pro with the Nvidia Geforce 650m video card,16g memory, 768gb flash memory. My question is, I am running windows via bootcamp partition as well and am wondering if a non retina system with the same video card and only 8gb of memory is still going to perform better at running games like battlefield 3, bio shock infinite. I have installed these games and battlefield 3 looks good but is not on high settings, but because its on a laptop I am ok with compromising visuals some for the mobility. I have talked to apple representatives and they can never give me a clear answer to this question. They say that the computer has been optimized for retina, but common sense tells me running a game at 2880 x 1800 is more demanding on the video card than 1680 x 1050 (non retina high res display)
    Thoughts on this please?

I agree with @clintonfrombirmingham, even if the hardware is the same, it really isnt quite so. You have higher pixel density but that also means regardless of screen size, you're still pushing more pixels (2880x1800) vs (1440x900) - again, logic to me says i7 2.7ghz / 1GB 650M / 8GB Ram is less stressed pushing the lesser of the two thus getting better performance, frame rates etc. I get that because of the pixel density the retina can in cases look sharper, but running fast pased FPS @ Retina I think will be very taxing on the system.
Does anyone know what is the bottom line or benchmarks for such a use case?

  • Does anyone like their new iMac screen?????

I am going to be recommending a new imac for some friends and wanted to know if there is anyone that likes the new screens on their iMac?
I know only people with problems post on here, but just wanted to see if there are any happy iMac users.
    thanks in advance

For the past 4 years, I've been using the Powerbook G4 laptop and I prefer the matte screen display. When I saw the new iMacs, the only thing I didn't like was the glossy screen, but everything else was awesome about the iMac. In the end, I decided that the glossy screen wasn't SO bad. The only time it's really irritating is during daytime when the light reflects off the screen. Since my iMac is in my bedroom, I can just pull down the blinds and it'll shield the sunlight from 'attacking' my iMac glossy screen. Or, you can increase the screen brightness, and it helps take away the reflections.. not 100%, but most of it.
I've gotten used to the glossy screen now, and yes, it does make my Powerbook G4 screen look quite dull. Haha. I still use my G4 for school purposes, so it's not going into the can just yet...
Yeah, that's my take on the screen. So, yes, I do like the new iMac screen.

  • Anyone used their 15" MBP for FCP?

I've been trying ways to get it working for me, I've seen people using FCP on their laptop to do editing (not capturing) without any ext drives connected to it but I can't seem to even edit properly on my MBP... Kinda frustrating...

Sounds like 2 issues to me:
Your clips' settings aren't matched to your sequence settings. If you drag a newly captured clip into a sequence and it immediately demands rendering, then you've got a clip/sequence mismatch.
Secondly, you don't want to be capturing, editing, or in any way be manipulating media that resides on your internal HD. Sounds like you've seen people do this exact thing but it's certainly not recommended. By doing so you're asking the internal HD to manage: 1.) The OS 2.) The actual app involved (FCP) and 3.) The actual media.
There's too much going on there. Even if you've got a 7200 rpm internal HD, you're asking for problems. And if you don't have that fast a drive - well....
Match your clips to your sequence.
Get the media onto an external drive.
    Report back to us.

  • Anyone have their MacBook replaced or just refund?

I got my MacBook 3 Monthes ago and at the first day, the battery damaged. Then go to service center and get it back in few days.
Then the power adaptor "buzz" and get another week to have another. Just 2 weeks ago, my MacBook start RSD and I still can't get it back today....
Service Center told me that I have to wait at least 2 more weeks!!!
Only 3 months old!!! but half of its time gone to Service Center.... and have to wait longer... I am quite dispointed.
Just want to know if I can request for a replacement instead of WAIT, WAIT & WAIT...
    or I can get refund...

Chances are that you won't get a refund, even if you ask for one.
You can ask to talk to a product specialist (or whatever the superior is to the Applecare person) and politely but firmly explain to them your situation and that you would really like a replacement machine. They may or may not go for it. They may say that if you have to send it in one more time, they'll replace it. Or they may just replace it. Either way, it doesn't hurt to ask. Sounds like you may be entitled to the replacement. But that's just my opinion.
    Good luck!

  • Has anyone got their Vaja case for their iPhone 4 yet?

I just got mine and am disappointed. I've bought probably a half-dozen of their cases for earlier iPhones and iPods and have liked them.
This one doesn't fit well though. The part that folds over the screen doesn't fit tightly enough so that it is very easy to slide it off enough to one side or the other to the extent that it doesn't protect the screen.
Too bad, waited almost 2 months and now this . . .

I bought mine at the Vaja store in Paris while there on business. I got the sleeve-model. It is just gorgeous, if way too expensive. BUT within three days, it was too large and too loose and the iPhone 4 just slides right out while it is in your pocket. It's probably better for women who might place it in their purse in a pocket where it isn't going to slide around - but it is unsafe and unusable in a pants pocket. Sadly, I can't return it to Paris...I use it, but only when I can carry my iPhone in my inside suit breast pocket - otherwise, I use an older case for my pocket. Oh well.

  • Has anyone closed their macbook, and used a USB mouse + keyboard...

  • Has anyone taken their MacBook pro to China?

I need to know if a power converter is needed or if an adaptor will be enough.  I will not be staying in a hotel.

You will just need an adaptor, the MBP power supply is compatible with China's voltage & frequency

  • MacBook Pro Retina Early 2013 ME665xx/A same body like MacBook Retina Mid 2012 MC976xx/A ?

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro Retina Early 2013 ME665xx/A. Does it have the same body like the MacBook Retina of Mid 2012 MC976xx/A so that a case for a MacBook Pro Mid 2012 fits on my Early 2013?
    Much thanks

If they are both the same size (as in, they are both 15inch). Then it will fit fine!

  • New Mac pro for gaming?

Well I bought a MacPro last week and after talking to Apple I am returning it to get a new one. So here's my question:
I would like to use it for gaming as well, so what video card would be best? 2xGeforce or 1 of the new ATI cards
Didn't know which one would be best. I've seen the clock speeds on the ATI and they look great, but been using nVidia for gaming for quite some time and they've always out performed ATI. (At least in the PC world) This is the only thing preventing me from ordering the new one. Also, should I wait for the reviews to come out before ordering?

I was concerned that you had to to the exchange now.
The 8800GT $279 from '08 is fine for games in Windows, or get a PC card of your dreams.
But I see lots of PC users happy with ATI 4870.
