Anyone moved from e71 to n97 mini?

Hello,
I've been a faithful fan of the Eseries line for several years (E61i->e71). The phones are rock solid except for some issues with VOIP. The e72 isn't getting much love these days on the Nokia Discussion pages or on in the Amazon Reviews. Sure some people love it but way too many "Don't buy it posts" out there from e71 owners.
So, have any of you Eseries fans moved over to the N97 mini? The N97 (Big Brother) doesn't get much good press but several people have mentioned the N97 mini is great and as good as an Eseries phone. I need something small since I use my e71 with Sportstracker while running and biking. Anyone out there switch from a e71 or Eseries to the n97 mini and love it?

have used, but not owned an E-Series, and no-one else has replied yet so do a bit of research and take a chance, it's a completely different experience, but will do your 'E' stuff and a LOT more

Managing contact groups in E71 and N97 mini

It seems that the E71 does not support groups like older models used to: apparently groups are listed alongside contacts, and it is no longer possible to see and search groups directly. I'd like to see my groups straight away (e.g. clients, business partners, friends, etc), open and search them, rather than finding them among the contacts. Actually, this setup misses the whole point of classifying contacts into groups! What on Earth was Nokia thinking?
Is there any way around this? A firmware update or a third-party app?
Also, how are contact groups managed in the N97 mini? Is it the same, or does that mobile finally allow you to see and search groups directly?

Unfortunately user manuals are always more useless, and it seems the only way to understand these details is to ask other users...
Have you checked if groups can be synchronized between the phone and Ovi? With older versions of Ovi it wasn't possible.
Can you manage, sync and backup groups from the PC using Nokia PC Suite?
What's the difference between contacts and Ovi contacts? I thought the whole point of Ovi was to sync data between the website and the mobile. Can you instead keep two different directories of contacts and access them separately?
I wonder if 'groups' is just another field in the contact database, which gets saved when you export contacts to a csv file with Nokia PC Suite, or if groups are stored in some other ways.

Download files from mac to N97 mini/WLAN

I can access the net through WLAN from my N97 mini, and download from anywhere except for my own Mac (snow leopard).
My wireless router can see the phone, and gives it an IP address, but I get nowhere when I key the address in on my mac.
ISync works OK for calendar and contacts.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi, I'm not that techy. but don't think N97 has share on home network (like N95 had) so I use either bluetooth or usb to transfer files (usb much faster) but I also use pc not mac. Hope someone with more technical knowledge can help'

Has anyone moved from mobileme to icloud?

Am a bit worried about mopving from mobileme to icloud as I dont want to lose my iweb site. Im aware that Ill have to change it by next June, but has anyone moved over and if so are your iweb sites still working in the meantime.?

To add to Ethmoid's post: it is now confirmed that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
◼ Password protection
◼ Blog and photo comments
◼ Blog search
◼ Hit counter
◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

Has anyone moved from Sky to BT Vision - opinions ...

Hi. My Sky contract is up at the end of July and I want to move to BT vision.
I'm wondering has anyone gone through this process and what are your thoughts on the new service?
How did the transition go? How much are you saving? What are the call centres like (I know they have Indian call centres like Sky I've heard that you need to keep the STB on all the time. Is this true?
Also, does the router need to be near the tv? This wouldn't be possible in the place I live at the moment. Would a wireless bridge work?
Basically all I'm watching is Sky Sports 1 and 2 (I also have SS3 and 4 which I don't watch) and Freeview, plus I've got BB,HD + 2 pack, and I'm paying £63.50. Its just too much.
I'm hoping moving to BT Vision I could cut my bill in half.

I cancelled Sky last night and got my MAC code! Should be disconnected at the end of July.
How long will it take from placing an order with BT to getting package and STB in the post? I'm thinking of ordering at the beginning of July.
About the STB issues I wold rather turn it off. It will be connected to an 8 way power adapter with amps and 50 inch tv etc all connected. I really don't want to leave all that on standy when I'm out. I never schedule record never and I don't mind waiting to for the box to boot up, even if it takes 5 minutes.

Anyone moved from Bridge to Lightroom?

I read Adobe's product info and some topics in this forum. However I wonder if anyone has used Bridge a lot for photography and has now moved to Lightroom (or tried and went back) and why. I'd rather hear a short review from you than from Adobe (pro, contra compared to Bridge). Also how do the two work together, I'm reading a lot about lost Camera RAW adjustments.

What I understood so far is that Lightroom is better as a database for lot's of photos because it copies them to the hardrive. It also seems to be better for presenting pictures to a client because it can be costumized visually (logo etc) and doesn't have non-photo features clustering up the screen. But is that all? Are the metadata features identical?

The thing to understand about Lightroom is that, rather than trying to be a total replacement for Bridge/ACR/Photoshop, it's a new approach to managing your photographic workflow, especially to those of us who primarily shoot in a RAW format. I specify that, because there are many programs that do what Lightroom does for jpeg and tiff files, but Lightroom shines among RAW processors and the concept of non-destructive adjustments to RAW files. It also does non-destructive adjustments to jpeg, tiff and psd files, but at first look, I think most people using those formats will likely think "I can do more in Photoshop". In fact, though, Lightroom incorporates more "image management" tools than Bridge, such as collections, that might make it more attractive to many users.
Bridge has a more "seamless" connectivity with Photoshop and other Adobe apps, but for most of your work Lightroom's Export and PS Edit functions work just fine. The two functions that you might resort to Bridge for regularly are Bridge's HDR handshaking with Photoshop and Bridge's Panoramic stitching handshaking. Lightroom at this time doesn't manage those operations and, in fact, can't deal with panorama pictures with dimensions of greater than 10MP in either dimension.
Other than those specialized functions, Lightroom is great for organizing and basic processing of your images. For RAW, I don't know of any other program that has so much functionality, although I gather Apple's Aperture is similar (I'm not a Mac user).
The main complaints about Lightroom are 1) as a new application it has noticable bugs and 2) it lacks some important features, requiring a lot of users to resort to Photoshop or some other external application to "get it right". Yes it's a new application, both issues are valid, but still it is well worth delving into and learning the workflow. You will find yourself turning to Bridge less and less, and the Adobe team will provide us with updates as they are able that address pressing issues.

Moving from PowerMac to Mac Mini

I currently have a PowerMac G5 1.8 Ghz, thinking of upgrading and getting a Mac Mini 2.53 Ghz.
I would get a Mac Pro but they are too expensive, they don't offer a lower cost Mac Pro like they did the G5 when I bought mine. My question is how big of a speed increase would I expect? I know the difference is under 1Ghz in speed plus faster memory and bus etc. but I haven't been able to find a comparison online.
My other question is if my Cinema Display will work out of the box. It's the model before they introduced DisplayPort so I guess it connects via DVI and can use the included adapter?
The other thing I would have to get is a FireWire 800 to 400 adapter to hook to the Cinema Display and my MiniStack. I would consider getting an iMac if I didn't already have a monitor and I can't have a glossy screen.

yes, geekbench numbers! PM G5 (1 core): 1078 & the new Mini 2.53 (2 cores): 3563 which is almost a 3.5x boost in power.
this only test the memory & CPU performance, not the graphics.

if your ministack doesn't have an 800 port, yes, the adapters are available from OWC.

Moving from Xserve to Mac Mini

I have 2 xserve's running in our environment and I would like to replace them with or at least one of them with a Mac Mini. What will I need to do in order to make this a smooth transition?

Which Xserve is it and what OS is running on it? If you're running 10.6 for example and want to go to a new mini that would be running mavericks or mountain lion then there are a few things to consider. If it's a like for like OS then it should be relatively simple.

N97 Mini: Stopping mp3 ringtones from being in the...

The Music Library on the N97 Mini automatically finds all music tracks on the phone, but does anyone know if I can stop it from adding mp3 ringtones?
The ringtones are saved in the 'Ringing Tones' folder, separate from any music tracks, but the Music Library still finds them, meaning if I 'play all' from the library, it plays ringtones too.
A solution would be very much appreciated!

Anyone else having N97 Mini Glitches?

I bought the N97 Mini US edition with S60 5th Ed. Does anyone have the following glitches:
1. When switch to "silent" profile, mainscreen still reads "normal" (though it's silent)
2. When text messaging, if you accidentally type "whatsup" and want to separate 'whats' from 'up', you can't go between the characters, and must erase your way back?!
3. Cannot change phone's ring volume with the phone's side volume toggle button.
Please let me know if these are normal. Is there even a software update?

I'm having issues here...
All was fine, but now I can't connect either a brand new Apple keyboard or my mouse. When going through the Bluetooth Setup Assistant the mouse and keyboard are visible and 'connected', but they just can't pair.
For the keyboard I get given the number to enter, but then the Mini doesn't receive it. On some occasions the Bluetooth Sys Pref pane says that they are connected and paired, but neither work.
There are no problems whatsoever using the same keyboard and mouse on my brand new iMac.
I am also noticing that the airport signal is fluctuating from full strength (which it always has been in the few days I've had it and was always the case with the Apple TV that was in exactly the same place).
Hmm, very odd. Will be phoning Apple tomorrow if this doesn't sort itself out.

According the this: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/transition.html, "After moving to iCloud, family member accounts are no longer linked to the master account." You can share an iCloud calendar (see http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2690), but I don't think you will be able to share iCloud contacts unless you are signed into the same iCloud account on both phones.

Data recovery from N97 mini

Hei all,
I’m using Nokia N97 mini.
Along with Phone memory and Mass memory, I inserted one 1GB memory card also.
Yesterday, I was trying to copy some files in ‘mass storage’ mode via cable into that 1GB card. While copying, some files could not be copied and I got error message.
So, I aborted the whole operation. From then, I couldn’t find my personal data from the Mass memory.
Along with some system folders on the mass memory, I have one folder ‘My data’ in which I save all my data.
I’m unable to see the ‘My data’ folder.
It shows that ~2GB memory is being used on mass memory. If I check the size of all folders that i can see, its only 45MB.
So, my folder is occupying space. But, i’m unable to see that.
Please help me in recovering my data.

Download and install an app from www.ovi.com called y-browser and see if that allows you to see your folder.

I don't recommend you send the iMac in a checked bag. Might get damaged.
Check the airlines website for carry on guidelines.
Or, if you have the original box that the iMac came in, if you have someone who can pick up the iMac for you, send it ahead Fed Ex and insure the package.
Just make sure the display is covered to protect it. A blanket perhaps.

Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service like Gmail, iCloud, or an Exchange server.
Have you failed to use the device as designed?

N97 mini charging from flat using PC USB

Had quite an interesting experience:
My N97 mini was completely flat (battery).
When I try to charge it using my PC's USB port, the PC will try and identify it as a flash drive, but it will then bomb out - this is an endless cycle (the sound Windows makes when adding USB Flash drive and then removing it).
Using different USB ports has the same result. I am not sure whether charging occurs, but after 10min or so I am still unable to switch the phone on.
So I went to the device manager and I can see it reloading each time the N97 tries to register as a USB device. Then I went and looked at which port the N97 is connected to (open each USB root hub and look at the Power tab - ie refresh each time the new device found sound is played from Windows - the USB hub that will be connected to the phone will be indicated by "nokia usb flashing parent"). By disabling the applicable hub, the phone actually showed the Nokia logo on a white screen with the battery life indicator (non charging).
When I then re-enabled the USB Root Hub, the display remained on the phone and it started charging.
Without disabling the hub the phone would just continue to endlessly find and then discard the "flash drive".
I was using Windows XP SP3.
Nokia OVIsuite 2.2.0.241
I did manually terminate any Nokia processes prior to disabling the USB Root Hub (not sure how many tried to rerun again).
Finally it is charging again. Wasn't too keen on what happened, because I don't carry the charger with me when travelling abroad.
Hope someone finds this usefull.

Hi all.
Went to bed with 5 bars of battery, woke up with a dead phone. Now I'm at work trying to charge via USB, but the screen won't light up. It'll buzz when I press the on button but nothing else happens. The little light beside the N97 Mini's USB port is on OK. My PC doesn't recognise the phone as a drive or anything.
Is it charging at all? Is my phone just dead and this isn't a battery problem?:-(
