Anyone notice a slowing down on a iMac 2007?

After installation, everything seems slower.  Wondering if I'm on the edge of the min requirements for Maverick?  2GB RAM  500 GB HD.

You shouldn't disable Spotlight completely; Apple's App Store relies on it to keep track of updates to software you've downloaded and permit you to update them when they're available. Instead, in Spotlight preferences, uncheck everything in "Search Results." Spotlight will still run for OS and App Store purposes but won't be useful for your search needs any longer. Instead, check out EasyFind in the App Store. It's fast, flexible, and will search external drives Spotlight hasn't indexed.

We need to know more about your system, please download EtreCheck and run the report and please post it on your next reply. Then we can see how your system is configured, what apps are on it and look for anything obvious. We will look forward to seeing your report.

  • Elements 12.1 Organizer slow and locks up.  Slows down my entire iMac.

I have an iMac running OS X 10.9.2 and have downloaded the update of Elements 12.1 and also shut off all of the media analysis functions and organizer runs so slow it is ridiculous.  It takes 10 minutes to move one file from one folder to another.  It also slows down everything on my iMac to a crawl.  Hard drive sounds like it is running continuously and the the spinning rainbow of death when doing very basic functions.  I've had to go back to an old Bridge software until this can be fixed.  I would return the whole thing since 12 doesn't seem to add much to my old version 8 in functionality and there are a lot of poorly place UI issues in expert mode.  I'd like to use the software, but it doesn't seem to work.  Any ideas?

    Hi,
Please try repairing and optimize your catalog.
You can do this by: File > Manage Catalogs. Here you can both the options.

  • I am finding that a new business is requiring lots of files, photos and video and it seems to be slowing down my older imac. I am wondering if a 1TB mini can be used as a dedicated machine to house these files only and if I can simply keep all biz files

Will a 1TB mac mini be a good solution to separate media rich biz files from personal home type files and will the uSB3 be a problem connecting to an older 1mac?

A USB3 drive can connect to an older iMac by simply substituting a USB2 drive cable. Or enabling File Sharing between machines.
There are organizational and legal reasons why you want personal and business content separate. Since you mention USB3, may I infer you are looking at the late 2012 Mac mini? It has four, USB3 ports.
I would purchase three, identical external USB3 drives and configure two of them in a RAID 1 (mirror) configuration. This means that data that is written to drive 1, is simultaneously duplicated (mirrored) to drive 2. Drive 3 would be an additional fail-safe backup drive. Using Time Machine, back up drive 2 to drive 3. If you turn off the Mac mini at night, put drive 3 in a fireproof safe until morning when you reattach it to the mini. Rotate the USB3 port that you use for drive 3 to reduce wear.

  • Why has my Imac recently slowed down

It has gotten very slow lately

How full is your hard drive?
Hhave you emptied OS X Trash icon in the Dock, lately?
Apple Mail and iPhoto have their own separate Trash to empty.
    Have you emptied these?
Iin OS X Disk Utility, run the repair Disk Permissions routine.
If doing these things only marginally helps, next is to upgrade your RAM memory.
Newer Intel versions of OS X use a lot more CPU, GPU, hard drive and RAM resources.
The 4 GBs of RAM in your iMac is really the working minimum of RAM needed just to run OS X, alone, by itself.
Start running additonal applications and your iMac is going to slow down.
Your iMac can take a max. amount of  32 GBs of RAM.
Install, at least, another 4 GBs of RAM. Install more if you can afford it.
Here are the exact specs for the RAM your iMac needs
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Purchase reliable Mac RAM from online Mac RAM vendors Crucial memory or OWC (macsales).

  • Intel Mac Slowing Down Post Leopard Install!

Please help! Recently I installed Leopard in my new iMac 20 inch 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. As of late, I have noticed significant slow down in my computer's performance. I'm starting to see a lot the rainbow swirls and I can't do anything for about 5 minutes at a time during normal use. Anyone also affected?

My Power settings have the HD spinning down every 10 mins after inactivity, but it speeds up in an instant. You don't even notice it. I doubt your slow downs are due to this. I did an Erase and Install when I installed Leopard and it has been completely smooth and very fast. You should do an erase and reinstall with no extra apps or peripherals. If it is slow then, just using bundled apple software, then it is fair to say you have a problem of some sort and should call apple. Make sure you do an erase and reinstall and repair permissions and reset PRAM and the system before you call apple, because you'll wait on the phone an hour just to be told to do those things before they'll speak to you about other possible solutions!

  • Slow down after crash

I recently had a total crash. I discovered that Time Machine had not worked since March, my fault. I am rebuilding the system and starting to use it. It seems to slow things down quite a bit when it is backing up. I don't remember this being the case before. It also gives a lot of errors. Does this mean that there are some files that simply will not be backed up on that current past?
I can only hope, I guess, that on the next attempt those files are actually copied. Has anyone else noticed this slowing down of the system? Is it recommended that Time Machine be used on an on and off basis. I guess that would be one way to determine if Time Machine is responsible for the slowness and the wheel popping up as often as it does.

It's first backup, or the first one after a long time, will be a full one -- everything on your system, unless you've excluded things. So yes, that one will take quite a while. Thereafter, they should be very quick.

No, it's not. TM usually works best if you let it do it's normal hourly backups. If not, then something is wrong.
Start with the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum. It will lead you through the process of finding the messages and fixing whatever's wrong.

  • EA6200 slows down over time and needs reboot

Anyone with a EA6200 notice it slowing down after about a week of use?  I just replaced my e2000 with a EA6200 and its runs very well for about a week.  After about a week I notice it slows down.  Pages start loading very slow on all of my devices on my 2.4ghz and 5ghz ssids.  It slows down to a point where it takes forever just to get logged into the router to and get to the page where I can reboot it so I know its the router.  Once I reboot it, it runs great for about another week.  Its using newest firmware.  I have 2.4ghz set to 20mhz and 5ghz set to 80mhz, channels set to auto.  Nothing to customized beyond that.

    Try:
Connectivity => Administration => Cut through Forwarding => Uncheck
If IPv6 isn't required by your ISP; Connectivity => Internet Settings => IPv6 => Edit => Uncheck Enable
Media Prioritization => Enable => Check
Media Prioritization => Settings and apply accurate Downstream and if available Upstream values; Initially keep all devices and Apps normal priority
If you have throughput issues on Wifi try Disabling WMM support (EA6200\6400); if no difference is notice re-enable WMM
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • IOS 5 slowing down first-gen iPad? FIFA12

    Hey guys and girls.
I'm relatively happy with iOS5 on my first gen ipad. Split keyboard is nice, iMessages too. But I've noticed one issue which is getting annoying. I recently got the FIFA12 game by EA and it ran very well. But after upgrading to iOS5, it is getting considerably slower on graphic-heavy situations. Like stadium lights and shadows at the end of the field.
Has anyone else noticed iOS5 slowing down first generation iPads? Not only talking about FIFA 12 but maybe other games and apps as well?

    Hey Guys,
I know this may not solve you're problems or make me all that popular, but 1), you gotta give the developers a bit of time to update and 2), what you are experiencing is common with first adopters. On older devices it makes a lot of sense to wait until the first update. By then you will know the issues and any Apple fixes.

  • MacScan - Does it slow down the Mac?

    Hello!
I was looking at possibly installing MacScan but wanted to see what others thought first.
I am relatively new to Macs. On my PCs I've had antivirus software before but one thing I disliked about any antivirus software was it always seemed to reduce my performance...everything ran slower because the stupid software was always running. I hated it.
    Does MacScan work constantly??
Has anyone noticed it slowing their machines down?
Is it possible to say load it- run a scan - and then remove it completely off the computer?
I am curious to know what you all think.
    Thanks!!

    Does MacScan work constantly??
    No.
Has anyone noticed it slowing their machines down?
    No (see above!)
Is it possible to say load it- run a scan - and then remove it completely off the computer?
    Yes.
No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download from:
    http://www.clamxav.com/
However, the appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.)
A white paper has recently been published on the subject of Trojans by SubRosaSoft, available here:
    http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?mainpage=document_general_info&cPath=11&productsid=174
    Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacSweeper
On June 23, 2008 this news reached Mac users:
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/
More information on Mac security can be found here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/
The MacScan application can be downloaded from here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
You can download a 30 day trail copy which enables you to do a full scan of your hard disk. After that it costs $29.95.
More on Trojans on the Mac here:
    http://www.technewsworld.com/story/63574.html?welcome=1214487119
The latest news on the subject, from July 25, 2008, is:
Attack code that exploits flaws in the net's addressing system are starting to circulate online, say security experts.
The code could be a boon to phishing gangs who redirect web users to fake bank sites and steal login details.
In light of the news net firms are being urged to apply a fix for the loop-hole before attacks by hi-tech criminals become widespread.
Net security groups say there is anecdotal evidence that small scale attacks are already happening.
    Further details here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7525206.stm
A further recent development is the Koobface malware that can be picked up from Facebook (already a notorious site for malware), as reported here on December 9, 2008:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_7773000/7773340.stm
You can keep up to date, particularly about malware present in some downloadable pirated software, at the Securemac site:
    http://www.securemac.com/
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac, and alternatives will probably appear in the future. In the meantime the advice is: be careful where you go on the web and what you download!

  • Anyone Else Experiencing Slow Import Times in Aperture?

I"ve been a Aperture user from the beginning.
Recently I've noticed a slow down in the processing and overall speed of the program espeically importing of images.  Anyone else experiencing this issue?
No it's not my RAM got plenty thank you.... I've been working on this machine Mac Book Pro 15" for the last 2 yrs.
My last import involved 1500 images Large jpg format and it took over 45mins!  NOT normal.  Considering I normally shoot RAW with a Nikon D800.  Huge files in comparision.
I've had a couple of Database Rebuilds which have been a new occurence as well.  Just recently started a NEW library on a new set of external G-Raid drives to hopefully CYA if this is just a symptom of something to come.
If you have any valueable feedback it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Spencer

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Upgrade to Leopard causing internet slow down?

I just upgraded my G5 PowerMac from Tiger to Leopard. The Mac is plugged via ethernet directly into a NetGear router so I can also access internet wirelessly from my MacBookPro. Since the OS upgrade on my tower, I've noticed marked slow down in internet connectivity: web pages load really slowly and Mail takes forever to pull in my mail. Could Leopard be the culprit? Have run a speed test and results show that I'm getting what I'm paying for in terms of up/download speed, but wait times are ridiculous! Help!

If you look really carefully, you see me alternately scratching my head and hitting it against the wall . I'm almost clueless. I'm going to assume that your Internet access is via WiFi, right? If so, the only thing I can come up with is that when you mirror the display there's some kind of electrical interference that gets thrown up. (And I'll cheerfully admit that I could easily be totally wrong!) If I'm correct though, it is possible that switching your WiFi channel, selecting Internet robustness in the WiFi settings, or moving your notebook as far away from the display as possible might work.

  • ZFS with de-dupe slowing down...

    Hi all,
I'm new to Solaris but am evaluating the de-dupe capabilities of Solaris 11.
I have conifgured a Virtual Machine using VMware vSphere 5 with 8GB RAM and a 1.5TB disk and am slowly copying a few million PDFs into a SMB share in the ZFS pool from a remote server.
It's been going well, I'm getting a dedup ratio of 3.3 but after copying 3.5TB of files, I've noticed it slowing down. Now it seems to copy really fast for around 5-6 seconds but will then pause for 10-15 seconds before carrying on for another 5-6 seconds etc...
I'm using the default record size and running "top" doesn't indicate that I'm using any swap, neither do the performance stats in VMware.
Any help/advice/pointers would be gratefully appreciated!
    Dave

  • Video slows down after adding text

hello, would appreciate any pointers to solve my problem.....every time i add text to my video project, the video will play very slowly (jerks) until the text ends.
this never happened before as my previous projects ran smoothly even with transitions and text.
anything i can change to fix this? i have not installed any new apps, now notice any slow down of any other application that i use.
    thanks.

I also experienced the same problem, regardless of long or short movies... I'm sure you are also experiencing this issue on your preview screens (both small and full screen).
Here's what I did... I just went ahead and exported the movie to media browser and iTunes. I tried playing back on iTunes and it works perfectly. I also tried burning the movie onto DVD and it works perfectly.
Bottomline, just go ahead and export the movie, then burn it onto DVD or whatever your preference is, and you should be fine.
I'm working on another project now, and it's doing the same thing again. But, I'm not really worried anymore because I'm pretty sure it'll be alright once exported.
