Anyone noticed noisy fans when iMac is idle on new iMac retina?

My fans seem very noisy on iMac retina compared with my macbook pro.  Anyone else noticed this?

Yes, I just got mine last week, and today, as I turned the computer on, I heard quite a loud fan noise ... which led me here searching for an answer.  It's the first time it has done this, and there's no reason for it i.e. the computer was off for the past 10hours or so.  I hope it's a "one-off" occurrence, because when I re-booted the computer, the noise is still apparent, but less than a few minutes ago.
If it persists, I will be contacting Apple Support.

    Hi Guys
I need your help on this. My 3 months old iMac (iMac 24inch 2.8GHZ Core 2 Duo Extreme) fans started making so much noise that is unbearable. They came on suddenly (you could see the wave of air) and even though I switched off the iMac for the 24 hours, when I turned it on, they noise is still on. The iMac works fine, but the noise is very very loud. The computer is in well ventilated room, so I dont know what is happening.
I bought it from apple.com and I dont want to go through all the drama of sending it for repair if there is a quick fix.
    Thank you for your time.

I think you've accidentally posted in the wrong forum - there's a section elsewhere for iMac issues where you're much more likely to get help

  • Anyone notice character count when using foreign letters?

Character count is typically 160 max when typing SMS, EXCEPT if you use one of the international keyboards (which I use a lot). I was just typing in Portuguese, and the character count dropped to 70 max. I had been writing to a Brazilian friend and she says my messages are getting chopped up, probably because of this limitation. Anyone else have this problem and/or know if there's anything I can do about it?

SMSs using foreign characters use UTF-8 (8-bit) text encoding, rather than Latin character SMS which use ASCII (7-bit) text encoding.
It's not a problem as such, and applies to all phones. It's just a limitation of the encoding used for foreign characters. Foreign characters simply use up more space.
There's nothing you can do about it.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Noisy Fans When using adobe premere cs6

i bought new macbook pro retina 15'' 2013 newest one , but i heard a fan noise for few minute when adobe premere cs6 run . Is that normal ?
how can i solve this problem...

It probably is.  CPU/GPU intensive applications will place stress on same and cause heat.  You MBP fans are dissipating that heat.
You might install iStat pro (download from the Internet) and compare that with the Activity Monitor display to the the correlation of application usage and temperatures/fan speeds.
    Ciao.

  • Noisy fans on iMac after Apple replaced hard drive

My hard drive was replaced by an Apple contractor last week. Immediately after the replacement the fans started running hard while working and would wake itself from sleep mode to run. I watched the Activity monitor as someone suggested, there are no "runaways." I zapped PRAM, and SMC multiple times. No change. Finally tonight I ran the hardware test and got the error message 4SNS/1/40000000:TH00-9.000. I then went to the support community and found that this relates to the hard drive and circuitry for fan sensors. It did not do this before. I will call the person at Apple that was my contact for the replacement on Monday. Just trying to verify that I have interpreted error message correctly.

Apple has basically replaced my entire computer: 2nd new hd, new fan in the right side (ODD I believe), new logic board and CPU and it's still noisy and will not respond to the Energy Saver sleep preferences. I downloaded smcFanControl software and that indicates that ODD temp is 106F and 3415 rpm with nothing happening in the drive. I decided to work drive and imported a bunch of photos to iPhoto. ODD got a little warmer but fan speed never changed. What now? How do I get to a high level Apple repair rep. I am so annoyed by this whole thing. I should have left the hard drive alone until it died and not responded to the recall.

  • Has anyone noticed a delay when secondary clicking on the trackpad after switching to Lion?

I have noticed that ever since I upgraded to OS X Lion there is a delay of the context menu showing up when I lightly tap the trackpad with two fingers. The context menu shows up immediately if I ctrl-click or push down on the trackpad with two fingers, but lightly tapping brings up the context menu slightly after doing so. Try it out yourself and see if the problem occurs. I am certain that this did not happen in Snow Leopard. I am using an early 2011 13" Macbook Pro.

Was there a two-finger double-click? I don't recall but if there wasn't there wouldn't be a delay as the OS would not have to wait to see if you were going to two-finger click again. As far as I can recall, it was a two-finger single click for secondary button, and that was it.
I've already forgotten, but I didn't use in Snow Leopard if it was there - I had been using a mouse.

  • Audio drops out when scrolling playlists after upgrading new version of 9.2

    Hi Folks,
Has anyone noticed an issue when scrolling the playlists in Itunes now that the audio drops out for a second.
I use an external USB audio device by Native Instruments called the Audio Kontrol 1.
I have watched the processes on my PC and when I scroll up and down on the playlist. Something spikes causing audio to not play for a second.
I am hoping to fix this somehow as I do not want to roll back (not even sure if you can). I also have heard with dual core processors that occasionally audio can get stopped as other processes take over where in single core processors everything cued up (any truth to that).
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much X & Paul, for your suggestions. Although they didn't solve the problem, they kept me hopeful enough to continue my quest for an answer. After exhausting all effort to find the problem in the audio, I decided to focus on the video. So, I tried correcting the excess luma on the consolidated QT movie, and suddenly the problem was fixed. Because of the different levels of correction I'd need for each and every cut in the original sequence, and the precious time it would take, I'd planned to save it for the color correction stage, a mere 2 weeks away. I remembered how illegal white would often cause the image on some monitors, specifically consumer TVs, to waver for a second. But this was happening all the way back to the DV deck's audio meter, so I never expected it to be a luma issue.
I assume that the outdating capacity of my G4 played a part, but I wanted to write back with my thanks, and to impart my illuminated wisdom to the next perplexed soul.
    Thanks again,
    jesterhead

  • Trouble running hardware test on 07 iMac with noisy fan

    Hello
I have an 07 iMac with a noisy fan- I've tried vacuuming out dust from the back but want to avoid taking it apart if possible...
I read online I should run the hardware test, but since I am running Mavericks the Apple support advice is to run the original OS X install disc and restart (holding down D or Option+D)...
Long story short I got a replacement disc from Apple (I'd lost the original) but the iMac ejects it when I restart following the process above... could it be my bluetooth keyboard? Hopefully not since I no longer have the original hardwired one... or does anyone have any other ideas for either how to get to the hardware test... or fix the fan (without a third party app just stopping it)
    Thanks!

Try holding down the Option key to get the one time boot manager screen then select the AHT. Not sure as Apple moved it around on different install discs but it might be on the Applications discs and not the OS X discs.

  • Calendar on iOS 7. Anyone noticed that when you enter text into the "notes section" of a day, the text disappears behind the keyboard rather than scrolling down to keep pace with text entry ? Looks like an 7 glitch to me ?

  • Anyone knows what do do when iMac doesn't recognize any USB or Bluetooth?

    Hello,
if anyone can help, please. my iMac does not recognize anything I plug into the USB ports in the back. I can't use any keyboard or mouse or track pad. It does not recognize any bluetooth such as magic mouse, wireless keyboard or track pad. When I plug in an older keyboard or mouse it does not see it at all either. don't know what to do. Can't do anything on the computer, which otherwise seems to be working fine, except everything I was using is frozen on the desktop. any advise?

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

Ack! We don't need that much.
What you posted looks like the iTunes Library.xml file  I will let you read about how iTunes works but not only is the .xml not your main library it is just the listing of tracks in your library and where the music files should be located.  Your music is actually in media files (by the way, it is pointless to zip those as they are already compressed).  Anyway, read these and you will see that your true library file (iTunes Library.itl) is only a small, but still important, part of a complete library.
What are the iTunes library files? - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
More on iTunes library files and what they do - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes#Media_management
What are all those iTunes files? - http://www.macworld.com/article/139974/2009/04/itunes_files.html
Where are my iTunes files located? - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1391
As you can see, a library has several components, so "getting it back" depends upon what is missing, what it was you actually backed up in the end, if any of this music was purchased from the iTunes Store, etc.

    Hello Kerrigaj,
After a re-install of OS X 10.5.8 uninstalled the E71 in iSync and moved it out of the bluetooth-device list first and completely re-installed it using the bluetooth manager (SystemPreferences/Hardware).
No extra thirdparty-software involved and ever since no problems.
Goodluck - hope it works for you.

  • Google search page on the iPad, issues when you try to open a new tab. Anyone noticed this? It is a recent development. Does not happen on any other website.

Till recently there was no issue opening a new tab after doing a search on google for an issue. For the last ten days or so I am having this experience of inconsistency. Has anyone noticed it. On the other hand if I visit any other web pages it works smooth to open a new tab.

May be it is working fine for you. But then i am experiencing the issue again and again. someone else was also facing the same issue on another forum.

  • Core 2 Duo Fan Noise iMac......is it loud???

    Hi all,
I'm currently a G5 iMac owner and besides other things im starting to get quite frustrated by the ramping fans, especially on CPU intense apps. Its almost ike a plane taking off.
I was just wondering if anyone could let me know what the noise of the core 2 duo imac is like, is it quiet, can you hardly notice the fans etc. It would be great if somebody has had a G5 iMac and could compare the two.
    Thanks in Advance

My father has a 17" iMac G5 and it is definitely louder than my 20" iMac C2D, and that's when the machines are idle. There is noticeably more air coming from the top vents of the G5 than the C2D, and hotter air, too. Come to think of it, I've never heard the fans on my C2D reach full speed, not even once. The SuperDrive is the noisiest component in my C2D. Now, you really want to hear a plane taking off? Boot the G5 in target disk mode. Man oh man!
