Anyone recommend a FTP client that is suited to OS10.9 (Mavericks) please

I am wondering if anyone is able to assist please. It has been a while since I've updated my website (using iWeb) with the last time being prior to the update from Mountain Lion to OS 10.9 Mavericks. Without going into the whole background, I had use "Cute FTP" to assist me but since the update to Mavericks, it has become unusable - it has vanish into the depths of the hardrive in consequence. CuteFTP have not done any updates either so has render the software useless unfortunately. In consequence, could anyone recommend a (free) FTP client which is compatible with OS 10.9 (Mavericks).
Some people have suggested "Filezilla" but the latest version seems to only go as far as OS10.8 (Mountain Lion) and therefore reluctant to down load it. Again, would appreciate any assistance and guidance in the circusmtances. Thank You.

There are several that are good.  YummyLite is very inexpensive from the App Store.  I use Transmit.  Cyberduck is a good client and is free.
All three show the FTP server in a Finder like window letting you see what's there and going on.

  • Does anyone have an email client that is working with Mountain Lion? I'm giving up on Mail after installing Mountain Lion

    Hi
I give up.  I just cannot see my exchange inbox in Mail after installing Mountain Lion.  My mail is not being deleted.  Its still in my inbox I just can't see it. I've tried everything suggested on the forums and nothing is working for me.
My productivity has completely stalled and I really need to move to an email client that is going to work seamlessly with Mountain Lion.
    Any recommendations?

I have the same problem. Upgraded to ML, and my Mac Mail suddenly can't communicate with Gmail's SMTP server.
I have been having the SAME problem with ALL my Gmail accounts with Mail.app - It is very annoying, especially when you have clients and other important email to respond to.  So you're definitely NOT alone in this department.
Might have to go back to Thunderbird or something until this gets fixed, which is going to really suck because I have 5000+ emails along with all my Email Folders in Mail not too mention the Rules I have had setup for years!
AND with the RSS Feeds NOT working in BOTH Mail and Safari!  That was a HUGE MISTAKE and defintely a STEP BACKWARDS on whoever's idea that was for sure!

  • Can anyone recommend a lightbox software that is completely 508 compliant?

Can anyone recommend a truly 508 compliant lightbox software? By that I mean, you can access the lightbox with the keyboard only (no mouse action at all), i.e. you can tab through the lightbox gallery, access any links for more info within the pop up box, close the last box in the gallery, not have the screen reader read all the html in addition to captions, and make sure that the screenreader knows there is a lightbox there and announces it.
I bought Ajatix Lightbox v.3.1.6.0 plug in for Dreamweaver as it said it was 508 compliant. It makes beautiful lightboxes but it has some problems in that I cannot close the last lightbox in the gallery without tabbing through the rest of the site and landing back on the page link and reloading the page. Also accessing a link within the pop up is just as problematic. You have to tab through the rest of the site again until it lands on the link. Long winded. Perhaps this is as good as it gets? I've been back and forth with Ajatix who have tried to help but there doesn't seem to be a clear cut way to make these items easier.
Just thought I'd ask to see if anyone else had run into this?
    Thanks in advance!
    Pam

Focus is the main problem in Modal Windows.  I think that unless you have the skills to code your own, it's probably best to avoid them.

  • Can anyone recommend a print server that will work with Mac & PCs?

Can anyone recommend a wireless print server that will work with Macs and PCs ?

Wireless has a disadvantage for many Powerbooks.  Unless yours supports 802.11g, it is not secure.  So it must support Airport Extreme on the Powerbook to have a secure wireless network.   Also many printers only support 802.11b, making matters worse, as that is not secure.  See my FAQ* on printing:
    http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html
Some printers have ethernet ports, which would allow you to use a Wireless ethernet bridge that is 802.11g.  Similarly you could use one on the Mac, and then you'd have your wireless printing.  Ask the printer manufacturer what might be possible.  The last thing you want is an insecure network, especially if you are at most 4500 meters/1500 feet from someone who could pick it up and log into it that you don't want.

  • Can anyone recommend a PC keyboard that is similar to the Mac keyboard?

I own a macbook pro at home, but have to use a PC at work. The differences in the two keyboards are making it difficult to type -- lots of typos, etc. Can anyone recommend a mac-alike keyboard for the PC?

The MacBook Pro built in keyboard isn't ideal for typists, nor can it handle a lot of wear and tear.
If you wear out the built in keyboard, then you might not be able to perform essential at boot key commands if needed.
What you can do is use one ideal keyboard for both and this is currently the best kind, handles a lot of pounding and gives tactile and audio feedback.
There is also a option for no markings on the keys, to force you into being a touch typist.

  • Can anyone recommend a good anti virus/security suite?

I have a friend recommending "MacKeeper" but the Apple online store only has "ESET" with two reviews which are both one star!

    VIRUSES
No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download  from:
    http://www.clamxav.com/download.php
Note: ClamAV adds a new user group to your Mac. That makes it a little more difficult to remove than some apps. You’ll find an uninstaller link in ClamXav’s FAQ page online.
If you are already using ClamXav: please ensure that you have installed all recent  Apple Security Updates  and that your version of ClamXav is the latest available.
Do not install Norton Anti-Virus on a Mac as it can seriously damage your operating system. Norton Anti-Virus is not compatible with Apple OS X.
FAKE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE and associated MALWARE
Do not be tricked by 'scareware' that tempts computer users to download fake anti-virus software that may itself be malware.
Fake anti-virus software that infect PCs with malicious code are a growing threat, according to a study by Google. Its analysis of 240m web pages over 13 months showed that fake anti-virus programs accounted for 15% of all malicious software.
Scammers trick people into downloading programs by convincing them that their PC is infected with a virus.
Once installed, the software may steal data or force people to make a payment to register the fake product.
Beware of PDF files from unknown sources. A security firm announced that by its counting, malicious Reader documents made up 80% of all exploits at the end of 2009.:

TROJANS and RE-DIRECTION TO FAKE WEBSITES
The appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's  (that's you!)  DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
You can read more about how, for example, the OSX/DNSChanger Trojan works (by falsely suggesting extra codecs are required for Quicktime) here:
    http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojan_osx_dnschanger.shtml
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X.  It's available here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/
First update the MacScan malware definitions before scanning. You can also contact their support team for any additional support - [email protected] [/b]
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days free trial the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.
A white paper was published on the subject of Trojans by SubRosaSoft, available here:

    Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008

This was published on July 25, 2008:
Attack code that exploits flaws in the net's addressing system are starting to circulate online, say security experts.
The code could be a boon to phishing gangs who redirect web users to fake bank sites and steal login details.
Net security groups say there is anecdotal evidence that small scale attacks are already happening.
    Further details here:  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7525206.stm
A further development was the Koobface malware that can be picked up from Facebook (already a notorious site for malware, like many other 'social networking' sites like Twitter and MySpace etc), as reported here on December 9, 2008:

You can keep up to date, particularly about malware present in some downloadable pirated software, at the Securemac site:
    http://www.securemac.com/
    HOW TO AVOID RE-DIRECTION
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of added security as well as speed-up:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac, and alternatives will probably appear in the future. In the meantime the advice is: be careful where you go on the web and what you download!
WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOUR MAC HAS BECOME 'INFECTED'
If you think you may have acquired a Trojan, and you know its name, you can also locate it via the Terminal:
    http://theappleblog.com/2009/04/24/mac-botnet-how-to-ensure-you-are-not-part-of- the-problem/
Although any content that you download has the possibility of containing malicious software, practising a bit of care will generally keep you free from the consequences of anything like the DNSChanger trojan.
    1. Avoid going to suspect and untrusted Web sites, especially p'orn'ography sites.
    2. Check out what you are downloading. Mac OS X asks you for you administrator password to install applications for a reason! Only download media and applications from well-known and trusted Web sites. If you think you may have downloaded suspicious files, read the installer packages and make sure they are legit. If you cannot determine if the program you downloaded is infected, do a quick Internet search and see if any other users reported issues after installing a particular program. A recent example is of malware distributed through innocent looking free screensavers:  http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/malware-watch-free-mac-os-x-screensavers-bund led-with-spyware/6560?tag=nl.e589
    3. Use an antivirus program like ClamXav. If you are in the habit of downloading a lot of media and other files, it may be well worth your while to run those files through this AV application.
    4. Use Mac OS X's built-in Firewalls and other security features.
    5. LimeWire (now defunct) and other peer-to-peer sharing applications and download torrents supplying pirated software, movies etc are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. Everything from changing permissions to downloading trojans and other malicious software can be acquired from using these applications. Similar risks apply to using Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and similar sites which are prone to malicious hacking:  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8420233.stm
    6. Resist the temptation to download pirated software. After the release of iWork '09, a Trojan was discovered circulating in pirated copies of Apple's productivity suite of applications (as well as pirated copies of Adobe's Photoshop CS4). Security professionals now believe that the botnet (from iServices) has become active. Although the potential damage range is projected to be minimal, an estimated 20,000 copies of the Trojan were downloaded.  SecureMac offer a simple and free tool for the removal of the iBotNet Trojan available here:

There is the potential for having your entire email contact list stolen for use for spamming:

NOTE: Snow Leopard, OS 10.6.x, offers additional security to that of previous versions of OS X, but not to the extent that you should ignore the foregoing:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/security/
Apple's 10.6.4 operating system upgrade silently updated the malware protection built into Mac OS X to protect against a backdoor Trojan horse that can allow hackers to gain remote control over your treasured iMac or MacBook.

  • Can anyone recommend a Discussion forum that works with SSO?

    Hey,
For a medium sized customer we are in the process of trying to find a discussion forum that they can use.
I was wondering if anyone have any other discussion forums, free or not, that they have implemented and works good with SSO and access restrictions?
We need to implement access restriction based on oracle application server user groups, and have SSO sign you in both to the discussion forum, and to the portal in general.

    Hi MHaddox
And welcome to apple discussions. LaCie is actually one of the better S-Drives for mac in terms of an external burner (at least from reading this forum). However, I haven't seen too much posted in terms of the Lightscribe feature itself. Perhaps one or more of these links will help (if not just come on back):

  • Can anyone recommend a clock radio that is compatible with 2nd gen Shuffle?

I would like to purchase a clock radio to go along with the Shuffle for Christmas present. Looking for a good recommendation. If it has a CD player, even better. Thanks.

I bought an epson xp650 a couple of months ago and cannot fault it. It does everything I require and it is the wifi model so I can print directly from my ipad/iphone. Not sure if you are asking about the colour of the unit or just to be able to print black and white, Obviously all printers will print black and white but just to give you a little more info the printer I bought is the white version and it looks really nice sat next to my imac 27''
    Hope this helps.

  • FTP Client - recommendation

I can get to my web-site via parallels and IE but would prefer direct via the Mac. I do nothing more complex than upload a file or series of family pictures so I just want something simple and relaible. Can anyone recommend a straightforward client please? Thanks

Hi, Yummy FTP is a good, though not free program. OS X also has ftp built in straight from the shell. All you really need to do is open a terminal and you can ftp right from there.

  • Recommend a good secure FTP client

I am currently using Fetch 4.0.3 and it works well, but it will not allow me a secure connection. As a result, my password is NOT protected, and my website has been compromised. I have been advised to change my password, which I have done, but still, I can't log on with encryption. Not sure why, but "enable encryption" is grayed out and not available.
Is there a better FTP client that I could switch to. One that will assure a secure connection? What does everyone recommend?

    Hi Rob--
I'll second the suggestion of Transmit or Cyberduck.
As for Fetch, there's secure then there's secure. Fetch 4.0.3 only supports secure passwords if your server supports the right kind of authentication (Kerberos). Perhaps what the people who were advising you was to use SFTP, which is a kind of secure FTP using SSH, which is very strong if you have a good password.
I'm pretty sure Cyberduck supports SFTP. I know Transmit does, and Fetch 5.0 and later supports SFTP, too.

  • Ftp clients

Any opinions on which ftp client has the best "syncronizing" (i.e. only uploading new or updated files and ignoring unchanged files?)
I'm using Transmit right now, and it seems to have that sort of functionality, but I have occasional problems. Are there any other ftp clients that people can recommend?

The only issue I found wile using Cute FTP was that when I wanted to Edit a file directly on the server and Save changes it would not allow me to do so. Instead, it would save the temporary file it downloaded while editing.
Anyone else experience this while using Cute FTP? Or is it me just getting used to my iMac.
Yeah, I just switched over from the darkside but I love it.

  • Creative Cloud AS a FTP client

My business has a MAC server.  We access it remotely via the internet as a FTP.  I want use creative cloud as a ftp client, so that the interface allows for the previewing of ai and PDF files similar to BRIDGE.  Unless anyone out there knows of an FTP client with a very SLICK gui that can do this job...  How would I set up creative cloud to access my FTP?

    Hi Benjamin,
Creative Cloud doesn't support FTP sadly, so you'd have to figure out a workflow using a browser to get the previews. I'm not aware of any FTP clients that would be able to generate these kinds of previews either.
