Anyone recommend an email app for the Mac

Looking for an email app for the Mac

No. I don't use Entourage. You will find other email applications at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.

  • Why do we still have no pro-grade email app for the mac platform?

This is a combination of a question and a rant, I suppose. When I first came to the Mac platform back in 2003, I looked to see what the best email clients were and was surprised to find nothing that I thought was really strong. I started with Mail, hated it, switched to Entourage, and then since that time  I've used or demoed about everything I can find. Powermail, Eudora, Mailsmith in years past, and more recently Postbox and Sparrow.  I find all of them sorely lacking and it just keeps begging the question in my mind: why hasn't anyone yet created a truly professional-grade email application? I honestly think there's a huge market for it, and I think a lot of people would be willing to spend $30-50 for an app that got it right.
Right now, I use Mail with the add-ons MailTags and Mail Act-On, and  I've got my workflows and practices down to a pretty tight level. I am an adherent of inbox zero concepts/GTD and I practice them. Like many of you I get a lot of email, probably 200-300 per day.  There is no application I use on my computer more intensively than email, and yet it's the one app that is probably the most lacking from a development standpoint.
here are some of the things I'd love to see:
    - support for IMAP, POP3 and Exchange
    - an attractive, Mac-like user interface. Could Mail get any uglier? Why yes, yes it could, we now have Mail in Lion! Holy crap, were they incentivized to make it as dull and unattractive an app as they possibly could? If so, that team must be getting huge bonuses this christmastime.
    - industry compliant tagging
    - robust search functionality. Let me do quick spotlight-based searches, or give me a search dialogue box where I can construct more complex queries.
    - robust smart folder functionality. Mail does ok here, but it could be a lot better.
    - global rules (which Mail has but an app like Postbox doesn't), and then the ability to either have the rules applied automatically to all messages, or to fire a rule "on-demand" with respect to a single selected email (in other words, build in Mail Act-On functionality)
    - integration with social media. Postbox does a nice job with this. Hit their info pane button and you see a nice summary of all the links and possible social media interactions available via that selected email
    - integration with cloud-based file storage, and apps like Evernote, DevonThink, Omnifocus, etc
    - an intuitive, flexible layout that allows me to see my accounts and folder structures the way I want to see them, not the way the app forces me to lay them out.  Mail does a much better job of this than Postbox, for example.
    - integration with industry-standard archival practices. For example, integrate with MailSteward.
Mail is honestly not that far away, but they've been "not that far away" for the last 8 years I've been using a Mac.  I keep thinking SOMEBODY has to get this right and step up to fill this need, and nobody does. What  I'd really love to see is the OmniGroup (the guys that make fine apps like Omnifocus, Omnigraffle, Omnioutliner, etc...) step up and make "OmniMail". Give me an interface and a user experience I look forward to using, not one I use in spite of the interface. Give me a simple, efficient structure with depth and power under the hood that I can customize and tailor to my workflows.
if any developers read this, I am begging you: create this product. I've read every email app review I can find, visited a ton of blogs, user forums, etc..., and I think there is a huge demand for this kind of an app. If I did such coding, I would take the project on myself, but I'm just a user, not a developer.
Hope it happens someday. From my perspective, it's sorely needed.

I agree completely; email applications on the Mac lag (and I agree with the OP's frustration with responses as well).
I also have settled on Mail with Mail ActOn and MailTags; this functionality should be incorporated into the OS. I actually like using Outlook in Win 7 better; it's super easy to connect files, contacts, email and other stuff right from one application. And Win 7 has better preview and tagging built in, better than QuickLook. On the server side we desparately need gmail to use tags, but I don't see that happening. I still prefer the labeling scheme it has over Apple's mail, however. But I also find that it confuses many users (labels vs folders).
There are also other applications that integrate email functionality, like SOHO Organizer, or Contactizer. Good, but not the email holy grail.
I'd like to see communications built into the Finder or system, which badly needs an overhaul. It hasn't changed much since the 90's and shows it. Communication, whether it be email, tweets, social media posts, sharing, etc, is such an integral function of all work you do on a computer it should be better, um, integrated into all applications. You should be able to send data from any application to others in a variety of formats without having to go into an email application. Sure, you can now do this to a certain extent with either built-in menu items or services, but it's clunky. For example, when you write something you can either "save" and write to disk somewhere, or "export" in a different format, or maybe "email." All of those choices should at least be part of one dialog; it's just as likely you want to email, post, share or tweet what you just wrote, so just  having a "save" dialog is way outmoded.
So, yeah, somebody get on this.

  • 3rd part subtitling apps for the mac

Can anyone recommend a good 3rd party subtitling app for the Mac, preferably free? OR if all else fails a free PC app?
I am looking at Bell Nuit, but from reading their material I can only get graphical files, instead of a single subtitle file.
This is my first project with DVD Sp and of course it involves subbing 10 minutes of conversation heavy video, so if you have any tips I would greatly appreciate those, and I look forward to being part of this great board!

You can always subtitle directly in DVD-SP (though it 's not recommended it might be appropriate in this case with a short film).
STL Edit is probably the cheapest Mac solution. On the PC there is Subtitle Workshop which is free...

  • Can anyone recommend a good app for designing and printing labels?

I have just switched from pc to mac and have pages on my macbook but it does not have a label function (please apple sort this out its the only major flaw!) so can anyone recommend a good app that will do what a pc does? I do not really want to pay £85+ for office for mac just for the word program

One way to find an app at the App Store is to use keywords.
Type   print labels   in the search field top right corner of the App Store window then press Enter or Return on your keyboard.
Click one of the apps listed. Always check Requirements under Information and definitely read customer reviews before purchasing and make sure there is a support link available in case you need to contact the app developer for questions.
This forum is mainly for troubleshooting the App Store.
For feedback for software designed for printing labels, try posting your topic in the Mac OS X community here.

  • Can anyone recommend a recovery software for my mac mail?

I had to recreate a new email account and in doing so I guess my older (more than 7 days) emails have all been deleted. Has anyone used receovery software for the mac?

Well, prevention is always better than cure - do you have any backup system? (And if not, I strongly recommend you set something up - Time Machine is automatic, frequent, and part of OS X; it only requires an external hard drive or Time Capsule).
Second, most email services now have IMAP functionality, meaning that all mail can be stored on the server - this reduces the chance of losing email. So check with your mail provider if you can set up IMAP and what the server settings would be.
As to your specific question, I personally have used Data Rescue successfully, but you do need to run it quickly after you lose data (the more you use the computer, the more the "deleted" filespace is written over, potentially losing files permanently). You can download a trial for free to see if your files can be recovered before you pay. You do need an additional drive to store recoveed files to.
    good luck!

  • Why do they make apps for iPhone and dont make matching apps for the mac?

So I lovvvvveeee my MacBook Pro! I have wanted one for many years and finally got to get it. I have also been a iPhone user for many years, sense the 2nd. one came out. I have a huge issue though! I love all the different types of apps that they both have. I just dont get why it is that you can use a app for the iPhone that doesn't crossover to my Mac. That is so dumb! If they make it for one product say the iPohne then they should make it for all of them! Why don't they do so?????

    Hi Jenn,
I see you already had a discussion about this and its really terrible that newsstand isnt there, but i thought I might share a few apps that do exist on both ios and mac in order to sync the two or atleast make your iphone a bit more of a sidekick to your mac or viceversa as I faced the same problems  (some of them are stock apple apps but they are the best solution in my opinion).
Calendar: Use the normal reminders and calendar apps on the iphone and mac, they do a neat job syncing up
Browser: Chrome, you do need to have a gmail account for this but icloud for safari isnt as good as chromes syncing for your bookmarks and open tabs and saved passwords.
To Do lists: Wunderlist/Producteev, I suggest two here because both are excellent with the former more aesthetically appealing but the latter allowing for more functionality
Mail: Mail for Mac is generally good, but the syncing here is achieved by setting up as IMAP so make sure you always setup all your accounts as IMAP.
Notes: Dashnote, the stock notes on Mac are a bit inaccessible at times and you often lose them, so i suggest using dashnote, please note that dashnote is a widget in the dashboard on the mac and not a dedicated program but it is an app on ios
Music: Stream to me / itunes match, both of these are paid services but they allow you to share your music across both the iphone and the mac and they seem to be worth it for the price
News articles and interesting weblinks: Pocket, not a lot to say except for that its nice
Storage, and arguably a good way to read pdfs and docs on your iphone: google drive/skydrive
    Messaging: Apple messages, skype
There are many more apps but these are just the ones i know and use. Hope you find some of these apps handy.

  • [iTunes/iOS] 12 days of Christmas App for the Mac users?

    Hai,
I'm a little bit confused right now, so maybe you guys/girls could help me out.
I have an iPod 2nd gen, past year I could download the 12 days of christmas app for my iPod, but now I can't anymore, that's a pity! - Apple, everyone is a user for your products, everyone has paid. Please fix this.
But, for those who haven't a iPod or iPhone, they could download the apps and the music from the Mac App Store, source: MacRumors.com:
'For those without an iOS device, Apple says to come back to iTunes on December 26th to download gifts from your computer.   Though the U.S. customers are excluded from this promotion, App Store developers frequently use the holidays to hold sales on their apps.  AppventCalendar is another daily free app promotion that has already started daily app freebies.'
But I don't really understand this. There isn't a app in the Mac App store like this, and 'to come back to iTunes on December 26th'  Why? There isn't an app?!
    Help me!

pdroth, Yes, I am aware that only the pilot is free.  I did find it and downloaded it but my next question is that when it was done downloading it said "your purchase is complete"  This better not have charged me.  Did it?

  • Will there be an iTunes U app for the mac?

I am considering ditching my Ipad for a MacBook Air with the extended battery life.  With Mavericks coming, most everything I can do on the Ipad, I will be able to do on the Mac...with the exception of handwriting (which I can do without) and Itunes U.  Itunes U is great and I would like the functionality of the app on my Mac.  Will that ever be coming?

    Hi cdgrammer!
I have an article here that may help answer your question:
    iTunes U: Frequently asked questions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5100
Specifically, this is the section I considered relevant:
Can I download from the iTunes U catalog using my computer?
Yes, you can browse and download from the iTunes U catalog on your computer, but some content may only be available using the iTunes U app.
This content can be found in the iTunes Store, which is accessed through iTunes on your computer. Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

  • Can anyone recommend good clear skins for the iPod Nano 3G?

Anyone know of any good skins for the iPod Nano 3G?
    Preferably clear skins!
P.s. the skins that cover the wheel will that cause a problem with the response of the wheel? I have just adopted the Nano for the first time my previous ipod was the Shuffle!
    Thanks in advance!

I like hard cases for my iPods and so the one I have to recommend is a clear plastic hard case made by Agent 18. I had one for my previous iPod and I never got a scratch on the actual iPod. They make awesome cases for iPods and have fast shipping (the new 3rd gen isn't available in stores yet). Plus you don't have to put a film on your screen, the case covers the screen in hard plastic so you don't ever have to worry about screen scratches- I think the films can still get scratched if you bang it up enough because they are thin. Go for Agent 18!

  • What is the recommended Mini DVD  VIDEOcamera for the MAC.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A PANASONIC MINI DVD AND THE MAC DOES NOT RECOGNIZE IT WHEN CONNECTED TO IMOVIE.
LOOKING FOR A NEW ONE, SHOULD I GO WITH A CANON ?
NEED SOME ADVICE, THANK YOU ALL !

Just to expand on that last post, Its true. There is NO good solution for editing from DVD. First, DVD comcorders generally compress the video poorly, too poorly to edit with. Second, it is encoded using MPG compression which, without Quicktime plugins, wont naturally play outside of the Macs DVD Player. Third, the MPG stream coming from DVD can be very problematic in editing.
The best way to go, from a consumer-level standpoint, is the Mini DV or HDV formats. The quality is great and its TOTALLY plug and play.
If you HAVE to use DVD, i would find a program like MPEG Streamclip to transcode the DVDs over to DV or something editable.
I couldnt even recommend the hard drive based camcorders out there.
    good luck,
    joe

  • Can anyone recommend a car kit for the Nokia 6131?

I'm looking for a car kit for my 6131 and I'm a bit baffled by all of the options I've found on the internet.
All I really need is a nice neat mobile holder and a charger. The holder should not be the type that attaches to the air vents; I had one of those once before and it just made the car look untidy!
I already have access to a Jabra BT250 bluetooth earpiece so I'm assuming that if the phone is in its cradle I'll be able to use that to make and answer calls. Otherwise I don't mind buying a bluetooth car kit if it's a better option.
I noticed on another thread that someone was recommending the wireless plug in hands free HF-6W to a 6131 owner, but the phone isn't listed as compatible with that on Nokia's web site. In fact, if you look at the compatibility details for all of Nokia's car kits, the 6131 isn't listed as compatible with any of them!
Any recommendations for the best holder and charger for the 6131, or a single unit that combines both?
Thanks :-)Message Edited by pottermus on 01-Oct-2006

The only way to connect this phone to a car kit is via a bluetooth connection, the ck-7w would be suitable for this. There is no specific holder for this phone so you would need a universal holder, i suggest that you buy a specific non damaging bracket for your car to mount this on to give you the best position.
