Anyone running RH on Mac with VMWare Fusion?

Seriously disgruntled with Microsoft after a weekend
troubleshooting issus on my pc and getting nowhere. I'm at a point
where I either have to buy a new PC running Vista, or make the leap
to Mac. Have talked to a couple of friends who prefer VMFusion to
BootCamp or Parallels, but none of them are technical writers. I
use RoboHelp extensively (will likely be upgrading to RH8 and
generating AIR Help for a new, huge project), and also use the rest
of the Tech Comm Suite quite a bit. Have several customers who I
still have to create manuals for in Word (blah)too. Appreciate any
input as this is a major (and expensive) decision!
Thanks,
Katie

Yeah, I noticed that. However, I know there are others
currently running RH on Mac (founds some posts from November). A
year ago, I would've been the last person to ever consider making
the leap to Mac. But after talking to several people who insist
that the kind of setup I'm considering is the best of both worlds,
I'm really giving it some thought. Adobe's "official" support isn't
an issue for me as I've never called them, and worst case scenario,
I will still have my 1-year-old PC running XP to fall back on once
I reformat the hard drive and start fresh with it.

  • Sharing iTunes on a Mac with VMware Fusion

I want to share my iTunes library on the Mac side of my MacBook Pro with the Windows VMware Fusion machine. I'm hoping to just point the Windows side to my shared Mac iTunes folder. I can see the folder (under Edit...Preferences...Advanced - it shows up as Z:\Music\iTunes) but haven't been able to have the actual songs show up in the Music Library on my Windows iTunes.
    Is anyone else doing this?

There is a separate Windows forum in the Discussions where your question should probably be posted because it has nothing to do with the Finder and Dock.
Ideally, however, you should post it on the VM Fusion forum since the question has to do with using VM Fusion.

  • Need Help Cloning Old Windows XP to Mac with VMWare Fusion

Hello I'm new to the forums and I have been searching all over for a good answer on how to do this.
I have a ton of applications, docs, etc. on my old windows xp machine that I need and I am looking for a way to clone the drive it to my mac that is using VMWare Fusion. I have an external hard drive and have tried acronis true image but apparently that doesnt work. So I am looking for a good step by step process on how to do this.
Also later I want to clone the same windows xp drive to another mac that is using boot camp. will that be the same?
    Thanks

The easiest way would be to put the PC hard drive into an external enclosure and use Disk Utility or a similar tool to create a disk image file that you can copy to the Mac. You may be able to read the PC disk image format and get VMWare to read the resulting image.
Even if you make it that far, I don't think you will be able to get Windows to use it as a boot drive. You will have much more success just creating a new disk image and reinstalling everything with the correct drivers. Then just copy your documents back over using more traditional methods.

  • Split screen software of LG ultra wide monitor won't start with windows 7 installed with VMWare Fusion

I am using split screen sofware of LG but it is not working for me with vmware fusion 7. Is this a known problem? I am using an ultra wide monitor of LG (29um65), and installed windows 7 on my mac, by using VMware Fusion. But the software won't work of LG. It won't start. LG can't help me, because normally the software is working by using windows 7 on a windows pc. I got it also working on a  mac , when I used other virtual software as Virtualbox VM, but it seems not to work with vmware fusion 7. Can somebody help me with this problem?

yes, I think you are right, but I used virtual box in the past, and had no problem with the LG software, so it has also to do wit VMWare Fusion I think.
Never the less we still don't have a solution :-)

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

  • HT2431 How can I best run old CDs written for Mac OS 9 (Classic)on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7 with VMware Fusion

I have some old CDs of medical drawings and other references that were written for Mac OS 9 (Classic). These are still excellent resources but I now  have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7. I also am running VMware Fusion.  How best can I run these programs?

MacBook Pros & OS X Lion don't support classic operation.
Suggest you buy an older Mac that will run OS 9 or run in classic mode while booted into OS X Tiger or below.

  • Mac Mini with VMWare Fusion and Vista

I recently bought a Mac Mini 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB with a 160GB Hard Drive. Thinking of using VMWare Fusion to run Vista Business. Is this configuration advisable as it looks like Vista itself needs a minimum of 2 GB memory? Or should I just use Bootcamp.
Is anyone running Fusion with Vista on a Mac Mini? How is the performance..

I've used WinXP with Fusion on a MacMini and it was fine (but faster in BootCamp). I'm currently running Vista Business on a MacBook Pro in Parallels and while it isn't slow, it certainly is slower than in BootCamp. I expect Fusion would run Vista a bit faster - Fusion does tend to be a bit faster than Parallels but Parallels seems to get along better than Fusion with one of the applications I'm using.
There are advantages to BootCamp and BC isn't incompatible with virtualization. I suggest that you go ahead and install Vista in BootCamp. If you haven't already bought Fusion, download the demo and see how it runs using the BootCamp installation and compare that to BootCamp itself. Then decide.

A few questions I have if someone can please help me with is :
    1. How do I jump across to the windows OS ?
    2. Do I need to transfer the app from my external to internal mac HD
    3. Do I need winzip or is it still mac or once I goto the windows OS.. I can use normal winzip ?
sorry to ask so many noobish questions I just want to make sure I can run 3 main things from my Pc on the Mac and been told it was through Fusion which looks like the windows OS.
Please can someone help me out with these questions.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
since Fusion is not an Apple product it would be better to use their own Support resources here http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/support.html

  • Using Pro/E on a Mac using VMWare Fusion or BootCamp

    Hi
    I have a MacBook Pro:
    Processor:2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3
And recently for uni I have had to find a way to get Pro Engineer, a CAD program, running on my Mac. My solution was to buy VMWare Fusion and instal Windows 7 on my Mac so I could then run the CAD program. Once I got that done windows was running well however once I got Pro Engineer installed it was incredibly slow and pretty much unusable.
My question is has anyone got any experience with running this program on a similar machine and can help me solve this problem so I can run the program? Should I use bootcamp instead of VMWare? Would it make a difference?
    Thanks

Yes, I would definitely recommend setting up BootCamp for this - it's relatively painless. (It can create a new partition in the unused space on your OS X disk without erasing the disk.) The BootCamp Assistant has detailed instructions on how to go about setting up a partition and installing Windows on it, but the gist of it is that you have the BootCamp Assistant create a partition for you, then you boot from your Windows install disc and install Windows on that partition. When you've booted into Windows for the first time, pop in your OS 10.6 install disc, and it will install Apple's hardware drivers and utilities for Windows. If you got 10.6 shortly after it came out, the drivers will be version 3.0 for Windows Vista - you'll need to download version BootCamp 3.1 from the Apple support site to ensure full support for Windows 7. (If you have a newer copy of 10.6, it might have the new drivers already - I don't know, as I have an older one.)
I would, however, also recommend keeping VMWare Fusion (assuming you've already paid for it). Once Windows is set up in BootCamp, you can go into Fusion and create a virtual machine that's mapped to it (so you can also use your BootCamp installation as a virtual machine in your Mac if you don't need the full performance of booting into it natively). It should be fairly obvious how to do that - it will probably prompt you automatically. The virtualization also allows for as many different machines with as many OS's as you want - I'm running every version of Windows I've ever had in Parallels, plus a number of free OS's I'm trying out (BSD, Linux, Solaris). In short, it's a good thing to have.

  • Help with VMware Fusion please!

Hello. I have purchased the full version of VMware Fusion 1.1.2 and installed it on my MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.2. I also have Windows XP SP2 installed via Boot Camp, which works fine. When I open VMware Fusion, in the list box labelled "Virtual Machines:", there is one virtual machine listed -- "Boot Camp partition", which is obviously the virtual machine I want to run.
Here's the problem -- when I click on it and hit the "Run" button, a dialog box comes up with a progress bar that says it is preparing my computer for the virtual machine or something like that and that this will only happen once. It asks me to put in my administrator password, and after I do, an error message comes up that says: "A failure occurred during processing. An unknown error occurred." -- or something along those lines. This was before I updated to 1.1.2. Now, having updated it to 1.1.2, when I try to run the Virtual Machine, I get a different error. This time it comes up before I'm asked to enter my administrator password, and this time it says: "Could not create virtual disk for your Boot Camp virtual machine."
Can someone please help me figure out what is wrong here. I should mention that I also have Parallels Desktop (it was a gift) installed, which works absolutely fine. I would like to see the difference between Parallels and Fusion, and since I paid for it, I'd like it to work. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Can't Connect to Time Capsule with VMware Fusion

I'm having problems connecting to my Time Capsule's hard drive with Windows through VMware Fusion. I have Windows installed with Boot Camp, and use Fusion to run my Boot Camp partition virtually. When booting natively(Boot Camp), Windows can connect to the Time Capsule hard drive without any problems. However, when using Fusion, I get the following error message when trying to connect to the Time Capsule hard drive:
+Unknown user, incorrect password, or login disabled. Please retype the login information or contact the disk's administrator(67)+
Any ideas as to what the problem is?

I had the exact same experience as you. I solved it by putting the Time Capsule into Bridge mode. On either Mac or Windows, open Airport Utility and click on Manual Setup. Then click on the "Internet" icon. Near the bottom of the tab you'll see "Connection Sharing". Click on the small arrow and select "Off(Bridge Mode).
After doing this, the Time Capsule showed up in my virtual XP machine's My Computer as a mounted volume. I have successfully backed up my XP machine running in Fusion 2.0.1 by directing Windows Live OneCare to this network location.

  • Problem with VMWare Fusion and OS 10.6.8 and Safari

when i try to open Safari from say a tracking number or even if i try to install an extension for safari from a download by double clicking it in my downloads folder instead of my mac version of safari opening it opens safari in vmware fusion this just started a few days ago i haven't updated anything i'm using safari 5.1 on my mac and this is a imac intel 2.8ghz intel 2 dual processor
please help as this is causing me a lot of problems
    thanks Mike

It's not a big concern, apparantly the assocaition what program opens that file when you click on it is off kilter.
It's surely a VMFusion issue as they tweak things a bit in OS X as to be able to merge OSX and the guest operating together for a more seamless experience.
Perhaps you opened the file once in Safari in VMFusion and now it has that association, or when there was a menu selection you picked the wrong one by accident.
Register on get on the VM forums and post your question there and they can assist, it's a easy fix but it escapes me.
I run VMFusion too and noticed this ability once when I had OS's merged, but I don't merge operating systems anymore, rather I prefer to keep each one seperate.
Good luck, ask on VM's forums and you'll be fine.

  • How do I share printing between mac and Vmware Fusion?

I am trying to print from mac and from Windows XP installed in a virtual machine via VMWare fusion on my IMac. If I am able to print from Mac then when I switch over to Fusion and try to print it errors stating the the printer is disconnected. If I disconnect the USB and reconnect then it will print. Same with mac if it is printing okay on Fusion and I try to print from mac it acts like it is printing but it is not sent to the printer, if I disconnect the USB and reconnect then it prints. Printer sharing and window sharing is on. Any suggestions?

I suggest you post your question on the Microsoft Mac Office forums as that's where the Office gurus hang out...
