Anyone setup a DVR with linux?
found a package on sourceforge called DVR and wondered if anyone has tried it or has successfully setup a dvr at home with linux. want to get windows xp media center (i cant believe i actually typed those words!) but if there is an open source linux way, then i want to do that
need to know if the dvr package on sourceforge works and what type of video card was used. i know i need a tv tuner card and will probably get a hauppauge, but will that work with linux ir should i get an ati card

The 150 is cheap becuse it has no hardware decoder - it's all done in software. I personally like the 250 myself, because it takes the processor strain down and allows you to use cheaper (and therefore quieter) processors.
If you're really planning on building a set-top box, I'd suggest:
· Two Hauppauge PVR-250s - so you can record one channel and watch live TV on another (i.e. rewind, pause, fast forward live TV as you watch) - it pays off.
· A motherboard that supports a Pentium M (yes, they do exist)
· A geforce MX 4000 series - onboard TV out, good card, no fan
· The slowest DVD/ROM you can find - the slower the better. It only takes a 1X to play a video DVD, but a 16X is going to spin up and sound like ass when you're watching Braveheart.
· The largest disks you can imagine. 1 hour of raw TV is huge.
· A seperate RF remote system - this is the complicated part and you can always use a wireless keyboard, but the RF remote is really cool
Now for the record, I have never done this, but I setup and messed with myth a bit. I *planned* a set-top box for a long time, then I got Dish Network and their 100 hour DVR was 5 cents more a month... so my pipe-dream died.... it'd still be cool though, but I can't implement alot of it on the Dish Network lines....

Go to Solution.Nokia's Ovi Suite (etc.) is as incompatible with Linux as diesel fuel in a petrol car, so let that idea go. But there are Linux solutions. For me, I have two 8 GB memory cards, both nearly full with mp3's, and all those songs were installed to the cards using drag-and-drop. You don't necessarily need a software program, just Mass Storage mode. I made a folder called "Music" in the root area of the card and moved all the band/singer folders (with individual album folders inside) there. The Music Player should find them, or manually refresh the database. The same thing should work for pictures, although there may be some differences between your E7 and my E73.
As for the other functionality, I did a few web searches and found several "Suite" programs like Wammu, Xgnokki, and Nokuntu. Search these forums for "Ubuntu" and you will find many other similar discussions. /t5/PC-and-Mac-Software/Nokia-PC-Suite-Ubuntu/td-p/247373 is the one that got me started. Wammu and Xgnokki should both be available through the Ubuntu Software Center (Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center, unless they changed the menu layout). Nokuntu looks really interesting, but you have to get it separately from http://sourceforge.net/projects/nokuntu/ .
Embarrassingly, I have never used any of these programs, so you will have to experiment to see what works. You won't have full Ovi Suite support, like firmware installs and maps downloads, but it's something. If you realize that most Linux programmers are university students, or people like you and me, writing software for fun, I think this is quite acceptable. Not to mention that large companies like Nokia aren't always forthcoming about how their own software works. Linux can be a chaotic OS, so take it slowly don't expect everything to work as smoothly as commercial software. If you have specific questions about programs like Wammu, most have their own web site and support system (i.e. http://wammu.eu/support/ ), or you could visit the Ubuntu forums http://ubuntuforums.org/ . CiscoSecure ACS 3.3 with Linux PAM?
Hi. We have two new console servers (not Cisco products) and I'm trying to authenticate using our TACACS+ servers. Per the documentation I have found, I have put the appropriate commands in the pam.conf file. I have the communciation unencrypted. The authentication and authorization work, but the accounting is not. I have captured the TACACS server replying with "cannot process accounting message". Has anybody gottem ACS 3.3 working with Linux-PAM?
I think you are a victim of the AD Aware as opposed to AD Integrated. CiscoSecure is AD Aware, it can use the AD database for Password authentication (a very simple implementation of single sign-on). But the local database is used for everything else. From my point of view this is a good thing.
If the AD Admin, Network Admin and Security officer are all the same person, then I agree with you.
From your message you seem to be using ACS to secure your Cisco devices (routers/switches), I would not want people who manage AD to be able to give network device access to anyone they choose. Nore do I trust AD admins to understand network security. Normally the network people are very small subset of IT organization, so this should not be a big problem. Also, the real component that you are using to secure the devices is TACACS+ (hopefully) or RADIUS because the devices are not AD Aware themselves.
If you need for every user that is in AD to be a user in ACS, there is import/export support for both for inital setup, after that it is up to you to keep the databases synchronized. You can do this with routine import/exports, but I advise against it.
If you are using ACS to manage a Dial or IPSec environment, I agree this is a pain, but do you really want everyone to be able to dial-in or VPN into your network without coming to you for access? Don't you want to be able to disable/expire peoples access for devices and remote access without calling the AD admin?
For the kind of things you want, you need an AD Integrated product like Exchange or you can try some of the vendors at listed at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/partners/adall.asp

Is anyone install 10g RAC on linux 3AS with ocfs successfully?
I am having problem with CRS installation where installer ask to run root.sh. My first node finished root.sh without any problem but not second node it give me "Failure at final check of Oracle CRS stack." error. Moreover, I found "ERROR: clssnmconnect: failed, rc = 3, node samurai (1), (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=racs01-priv1)(PORT=49895))" error in ocssd2.log file. However, I can ping privet and public ip/hostname without any problem. Any input or suggestions are welcome!Did you ever get a responce to this?
I'm having the very same issue, which I can not find a work around.
Documents for the 10g install have been very few and far between, so any help would be the greatest! -
SOLVED - Has anyone had any problems with xorg 1.11.14-1?
Last night I had a double catastrophe. The first was nothing to do with Linux, but was the result of a rogue drive trashing my sata ports and killing both Arch and Windows. I managed to rescue Windows, but since Arch was running at the time (and updating) nothing I tried could bring it back. After restoring from a backup (10 days old) I started the updates again (a gargantuan 415Mb) which completed, though after a reboot X failed to start. Nothing in the logs, and no activity at all. My usual fix is to remove xorg.conf and reboot, which will generally get me to the desktop to troubleshooting stage using vesa drivers instead of catalyst, but even this couldn't get me to a desktop. I tried removing catalyst altogether from single user mode, but nothing would fix.
I restored the backup again, and did all updates except kernel, catalyst, and xorg. Everything worked fine, so next I updated catalyst - still working. A fresh backup and I updated the kernel. Still working, which means the only thing not updated at this point (and in my mind the most likely culprit for the failures) is xorg.
Now I'm not daft enough to try updating before I make a fresh backup (I've remade several tweaks to my system that got lost after the original crash), but before I go to the trouble, I wondered has anyone else had any problems with the updated xorg?
For info, I'm running on a Phenom X4 965BE, AMD 4670HD with catalyst 12.1, kernel 3.2.2-1.

X also fails to start for me now, when the catalyst driver is loaded. It used to work before, but after recent upgrades and changes to the system it's somehow broken.
(Same catalyst and xorg versions as you mentioned, but with kernel 3.2.4-1)
Switching to the open-source radeon driver makes X start fine, switching back to catalyst breaks it again.

All posts I found are about sql server 2008 (no R2!).

High temperature after suspend to RAM with linux-3.9.2-1.
After the update to linux-3.9.2-1 my laptop works on higher temperature after resuming from suspend to RAM. Works fine with linux 3.8.7-1.
Normal working temperature is 47~49 degrees Celsius and after resuming it is 59~61. It's not just a false temperature reading. I can actually feel the laptop warmer, and the CPU fun spins up.
I can't see any CPU high load. I tend to believe that the temperature rise has to do with the Intel GPU driver (i915). My CPU has an integrated GPU.

Ways to debug it? Apart from kernel GIT bisect.I got the impression myself, that all the i915 downclock tweaks have been getting counterproductive over time as the driver got better.
Be sure to give the new pstate another go. I had problems too with the upgrade to 3.9.x and the powersave governor. Enabling "performance" in cpupower only and letting intel_pstate manage the idling on its own had an awesome effect. I only have rc6=1 and "sna" accel along with it on a similar cpu. Resuming with fan off. -
Searching for USB to VGA or DVI adapter compatible with linux
Hello everyone,
Since my HP mini is lacking a VGA connector (in fact, there's a proprietary one, but the cable for that is rare and expensive), I'm thinking of buying an USB adapter to plug a monitor. I don't care if the connector is VGA or DVi.
There're a lot of these adapters, but I'm not sure if any is compatible with Linux.
After a lot of searches, I still didn't find something useful.
Is there anyone who had experience with this kind of adapter or can point me some documentation about that ?Just so I understand correctly... these USB to VGA/DVI adapters are video cards in their own right, yes? Something that I know works with Linux it the Villagetronic VTBook http://www.villagetronic.com/vtbook/index.html. It's a PCMCIA card (which is faster than usb 2) but you can get USB to PCMCIA adapters.

Linksys E2000 router is incompatible with Linux?
Hi All, I have Cisco/Linksys E2000 router setup for home wireless network. I had been setup while ago and well working since then. Now the challenge: I need to know or to change the wireless guest network password. Linux support says it can be done ONLY using a local application, not the web interface. And only from Windows computer. In my situation, I have Linuxes, blackberry, players and other network equipment but no Microsoft software. I did not know that router doesn't work with Linux when I bought it. Had anybody resolved similar issue? Thanks Yu
Sorry the software is only supported on Windows or MAC. You will need this to administer the Guest network.

Wilyhost Agent setup finished successfully with limitations - SMD SPS15
Dear all,
we have connected different SAP J2EE systems to our Solution Manager Diagnostics without any problems. Now we are trying to connect the corresponding ABAP backend systems to the SMD. The Setup Wizard for these systems are completed with a warning. Everything seems to work fine, but the warning are spurious (we get only the yellow light, not a green one).
Did anyone has the same "problems" with ABAP managed systems and has anyone a solution for the yellow light ?

HEAVY Problems with Linux x86_64 on K8T Neo

I experience *HEAVY* Problems with Linux on my MSI K8T Neo (FSR). Since the customer support of the german dependancy seems to ignore my call for help I'm in good hope that maybe you can help me out or give me some useful advise.

I've downloaded Fedora Core 1 x86_64 as well as the lately released Fedora Core 2 test 3 x86_64 distribution. Both CD sets have been burnt ok.
If I try to install Core 1 x86_64 (Kernel 2.4.22-1.2179) the kernel crashes with a "attempted to kill idle task" panic. As far as I've learned the workaround is to give idle=poll as kernel parameter. This resolves the kernel panic, but the installer randomly crashes with segfaults at a random stage; sometimes while loading anaconda, sometimes during package install.
If I try to install Core2 test 3 x86_64 (Kernel 2.6.5) I get a, completely new, error message while the kernel does the PCI Scan:
******* Your BIOS seems to not contain a fix for K8 errata #93
******* Working around it, but it may cause SEGVs or burn power
******* Please consider a BIOS update
******* Disabling USB legacy in the BIOS may also help
I removed my USB keyboard, connected a PS/2 keyboard, disabled to USB Legacy option (I need it enabled in order to use Ghost) in the BIOS and booted again.
The error message is gone now, but as in Core 1 the installer still crashes randomly with segfaults. I'm still unable to go all the way through the installation routine.
I even tried to install Fedora Core 1 "i386": again there are segfaults during install.
Contrary to the problems I experience while trying to install Linux my Windows XP (32-Bit), as well as a test installation of Windows XP 64-Bit, run like a charm without any problems. Strange but true.
Since I already read trough several posts in this forum I already tried running my system with memory sticks from another manufacturers as well as with a more powerful PSU. I even removed my tv-card and raid-controller.
Nogo - Linux still crashes randomly and Windows still works without any flaws.
Has anyone a clue what I can/must do to successfully install Linux?
Might it be that the BIOS has some flaws that might cause the problems?
Has anyone managed to install Linux (what distribution) on this Mainboard?
I would greatly appreciate any help. If you need to know something I haven't provided here please feel free to ask. I'll answer ASAP.

Since I was successful in installing a basic Gentoo system but still failed to install Fedora I reflashed BIOS 1.5. This time I cleared the CMOS by unplugging the PSU, setting the jumper and removing the backup battery.
Yesterday I only flashed it with the /a switch, which should have cleared the CMOS as well - so far for the theory. However, it once went fine as I upgraded from BIOS 1.1 to 1.4.
After setting up the BIOS options again I gave it another try and booted from Fedora (Core 2 test 3) install CD: No more complains about the CPU errata, although USB legacy is enabled, and I even went through the installation without any problems.
It seems as I will stick with Gentoo as my primary distribution since the kernel makes a more "mature" impression than the one from Fedora (i.e. the K8 PowerNOW! Driver seems to be missing in Fedora's Kernel 2.6.5).
By using an spare Athlon XP Mainboard I worked out that only one of my three Kingston memory sticks had errors - I'm going to replace the faulty stick tomorrow.
Now for the conclusio:
Thanks, especially you JLP, for helping me with my issue. Without the advise to use Gentoo, and the included MemTest86, I wouldn't have been able to track down the error to a faulty memory stick that fast since Windows always ran fine. -
Has anyone else encountered problems with Adobe CMM clobbering Photoshop add-in filters?
I recently tried to install Adobe CMM, as a pop-up window suggested after I installed Photoshop CS5 on a new computer, running Win7x64 Ultimate. Before trying to install CMM, my Akvis Sketch Plug-In for Photoshop worked fine. Afterwards, Akvis Sketch runs under the filters menu, but will not accept mouse clicks from my Wacom tablet. Prior to Adobe CMM, all was fine. Somehow, the frustrating attempt to use Adobe CMM broke links to Akvis Sketch.
By the way, Adobe CMM setup tried to run and vanished without a trace - no indication of success or failure. CMM doesn't show on my control panel as installed software, so I can't de-install it.
I did un-install Akvis Sketch and re-install it. No luck as a filter, nor as a stand-alone program.
Additional point of interest - a second identical software/hardware workstation continues to run Akvis Sketch just fine because we didn't try installing Adobe CMM on that machine. It certainly looks like CMM is the culprit here.
Since Akvis Sketch is broken as a stand-alone, I doubt that de-activating, uninstalling and then re-installing, re-activating Photoshop CS5 will help, but it will take a lot of time to recreate actions and re-install other add-ins, plus preferences settings.

Fact #1 - another identical system with ms mouse worked fine so I swapped out the Wacom tablet and bingo, the Akvis plug-in works again.
Fact #2 - So does Amazon's Kindle for PC app, which also quit working after running the Adobe CMM setup I'd downloaded.
Suggestion - since there's a legacy for CS5 users getting the "you should download CMM" pop-up, yet no need to do this, maybe Adobe should remove the CMM download page from its website - or flag this download as unneccessary for photoshop users. All Best, Charles Pierce.

Crystatlview rouer/repeater--anyone had positive experience with Ipad as repeater?
Have been trying to set up Itek R/R which, from watching a Utube video seems to be the same device as the Crystalview R/R. So far, have not been able to achieve sucess with either Mac or Ipad 1. Goal is to improve WiFi reception when poor in hotels, etc. Because of multiple reports that Ipad has less strong WiFI than Iphone/Mac, etc, had hoped this would work, although realize that repeater is usually set up near fringe of router zone for connection out of that zone. Have ATT Uverse, which is b/g, and have no problems with Ipad or Mac at home. Do note that, while Mac lists about 6 other neighborhood routers to choose from, Ipad lists only my own (?)--which, strangely has a lower score when measured on the Mac than the others?? Can get to the point when the setup indicates the device is configured, but when I accept that, it simply circles back. The device is recognized on both Mac and Ipad with strong reception indicated. Has anyone used this successfully with Ipad?
I still haven't upgraded from 7.0. However, last night I must not have been thinking properly, and I upgraded my Mac to Yosemite. I'm worried that my iPad and Mac will stop talking. So far, so good, but how long will they continue to support iCloud? (I didn't switch to iCloud Drive because iPad still on 7.0.)
With the 8.1 upgrade, did you note any improvements? Any problems? -

I have an Xserve rack mount model Xserve 2.26 Quad Core (EMC# 2279) with an Apple RAID card, 24GB RAM (running 10.9 Server software)
Purchased two Western Digital 1TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64MB Cache Black WD1003FZEX drives
It came with three 160GB SATA drives. I'm leaving one of the original 160GB drives for the OS, but I want to replace the 2 other drives and set it up with RAID 1 (mirrored). I bought 2 brand new Western Digital 1TB SATA drives and formatted them on another Mac through Disk Utility with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatting. I then placed the new drives in the Xserve and booted it up. After I login it immediately gives me 2 error windows saying...
"Apple RAID Card
The Apple RAID Card installed in your system requires your attention."
It has two buttons underneath this message allowing me to either select 'Ignore' or 'Open RAID Utility'
I've tried to RAID the drives the Disk Utility and through the RAID Utility with no success.
I have both drives mounted on the desktop, as separate drives, but I really need to set these up as a RAID 1.
I've been reading other forums, where others have been able to get this to work by using a jumper on certain pins (5 & 6)of the drive to back down the transfer rate to 1.5 Gb per second. I tried that and it didn't work for me. Maybe I used the wrong pins -- I just don't know. I'm also wondering if there is some Apple firmware that is required on these drives? I'm asking for help from anyone who has gone through this same issue. Thanks in advance.UPDATE -- I had an issue with the RAID card battery, it was dead and I have since replaced it. But I am still unable to setup the RAID 1 drive configuration. Does anyone know if it has something to do with the faster transfer rates on these new drives. Maybe they need to be clocked down with certain jumper settings on these Western Digital drives? Or am I fighting a losing battle because these drives don't have Apple firmware? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
