Anyone taken the plunge and upgraded to 1.3?

Just checking to see if anyone has upgraded to Xsan 1.3 and what their experiences have been.
Im currently running a new installation of 1.2 without without any problems and am considering upgrading.

I have run into major performance issues with upgrading to xsan 1.3 + os 10.4.6.
we have 8 xservs re-sharing the san volume, three raids and another two xserve acting as mdc, the meta data network is segregated gigabit and out main network is gigabit.
our primary application is asr / netrestore, before doing both upgrades we could burn our biggest image on to a mac book pro in about 40~50 minutes now it take over 4 hours. on the same network, same dns, same app but using a xserve with directly attached storage os 10.4.4 a mac book pro will burn in 31 minutes. no other equipment was burning during testing.
two things that i have noticed, the first and most pertaining was the kernel task on the updated machines was taking 90~100% of one proc (dual proc xserves) where in the past this should be about 17%.
the other issue is related to large amounts of "inactive" memory. this issue seems to be related to afp sharing of large files i have xserves with 8 gigs of memory and 7 gigs will be inactive (meaning that it was in use but the os is still holding onto it just incase) freshly restart a server the first burn screams. you can also watch activity monitor and see the memory getting used. then it runs out of memory and it starts paging for other applications.
my next task it to roll back the xsan 1.3 updates to figure out if it is xsan or the os update.

  • Should I take the plunge and upgrade to Snow Leopard?

I have a MacBook Pro with 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB memory.
I have just upgraded my printer after the last one died, so now have no real reason stopping me to upgrade to Snow Leopard. The question is though, is there any real good reason to do so?
With 4GB of RAM I'm probably not going to get any benefit from the 64bit architecture, so I'm wondering whether I'm better off just waiting until the release of OS X 10.7?
    Any thoughts?

My vote, Upgrade. It is great. Among many other things, the one thing that is noticeable and also impressive is the speed at which everything happens in SL. Way quicker than previous OSs. Also, some apps are upgraded like preview, image capture etc.
You might want to look at the reviews from last year.

  • Do I take the plunge and upgrade to infinity?

    Hi all,
After months of the BT wholesale checker saying that Infinity will go live on my phone number by the 31st Decemeber it has finaly been updated to say that it is now available.  However I have some concerns.
Over the past few months I have visited these forums and have seen a great deal of people with issues.  Some are simple and quite nasty.  I'm concerned because I work from home a lot and our family busines whilst not using the internet very heavy does indeed rely on it.  I have heard story's like peoples orders being cancelled and then they are left with no internet what so ever.  For me this would be VERY bad.  For the family business just 3 or 4 days could do damage that would not be reversable.
I have 2 friends who have ordered infinity in the last 3 months in different areas and both had problems, one had the order cancelled saying that even though the checker said he could get it, he's order was cancelled, but they turned everything off a couple of days after the cancelation, his phone and internet where down for around 3 weeks.  My other friend still has major issues and his fault is now being delt with the BT CEO's assistant.
Problem for me is that I want Infinity rather than need it,  Everything works fine on my ADSL connection now wth BT. I get around 5mb down and just under 1mb upload, whilst infinity is not essentual it would be a big bonus in it's upload speed.
I'm itching to order but BT's reputation holds me back.  Any thoughts or personaly experiences to help me make up my mind?
    Thanks
    Dean.

Yes, don't even think about it. If you can have it, grab it.
I was wary of BT also, but I think they do a pretty good job overall, given they don't directly run the network, thats Openreach. I also figure they should still have greater influence with Openreach than any other ISP. It's also easer to talk to someone at BT than any other ISP I've been with over the years.
The price diff between Total broadband and Infinity option 1 is v. little. Why would you stay with 5M, if you can get 5 to 8 x speed? 5M was great up until last year, but no longer. They are saying Openreach will double infinity speeds to 80M.
I remember moving off dial-up to Broadband(sort of) at 1/4 M, blissful at the time, but laughable now.
Yes of course some people have had problems, or some initial disatisfaction (myself included), but I wouldn't let that deter you.
I think you would be extremely unfortunate if an Openreach engineer left you without a workable connex of at least 3 times yr current speed. In fact I believe if they can't give you at least 15M they won't put you on Infinity. The first ten days your speed will prob vary quite significantly. You have to let that happen, BT retail will not take any action, until that period has elapsed.
If after 2weeks yr speed is significantly off that BT said, or "promised" - "Contractual Speed" even, as I used to goad BT with, then you have to stamp your foot and be firm. Tell BT to  insist Openreach get on with it, if you have important business traffic, tell them that right at the start. Do not waste time on the Indian call centre after the first time, go straight to Warren Buckley, BT Sales Director via email or twitter, he'll pass yr case to Executive level Complaints who'll put Openreach's nose to the grindstone. Without ELC, I might still be lanquishing on sub 20M, but they got me to my target/contract of 30.7M, now seem to be getting up to 35M.
Having an Openreach engineer set up the system, instead of receiving a new modem in by post and told to do it yourself is good. It's your one opportunity to get info on your situation, such as where yr cabinet is, not ness the nearest one, whether the cable is copper or aluminium (bad news). You also get a new master socket fitted, and if you want it in a diff. room they should do that also, free, gratis.
Great start to the New Year, I reckon.

  • I've Finally Taken The Plunge

I've been slowly turning into an Apple fanboy, three iphones, ipad, ipad 2 and today I've taken the plunge and ordered a spanking new 27inch iMac with the following specs
    3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    2TB Serial ATA Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
    MAGIC MOUSE+MAGIC TRACKPAD-Z
Should be with me next Wednesday they have said.
But my question is an integration solution. I have several drive from my old PC with all my music, films, photos etc on. I'm looking to set up a wireless server/backup device. Any recommendations ?

OK here's what I need to do and I think I may have realised my best option but this may help others.
I have personal files, photos, videos, movies, mp3's etc which is around 2 TB I was thinking of putting them on a wireless storage device so the drives is available to all my devices, 3 iphones 4's, 1 ipad, 1 ipad 2 and 2 ATV2
If I buy a HDD enclosure which can sit on the wireless network it could also be used to fire all the iTunes backups to it over the network, with a little tweaking of course. All well and good I can do that, BUT the thing I'd wish to do is also have the iTunes library over Airplay, but not have the iMac on all the time.
So the solution I think is to buy a cheap mac mini, run my iTunes library 24/7 as purely a server using the wireless HDD's. My router and one of my ATV2's is located in my main rooms TV stand so would just fit nicely amongst the other units.
This has led me onto another question If I can get a late previous model mac mini, an Intel machine, this should serve me for a while with any OSX updates and iTunes updates ? I was thinking of just plugging it into the TV and grabbing a small mouse just to do any maintenance on the unit if need.
Or does OSX have a remote desktop type interface where I can control the mac mini from my main iMac ?
Sorry about all the questions, but as read one thing which is then contradicted by someone else lol.

  • Has anyone taken the glass off a glossy display?

I'm looking to buy an iMac, but do not care for the glossy screen. I noticed a reference in another thread about someone taking the glass off in a youtube video and watched that.
So, has anyone taken the glass off successfully and is happy with the result?

Well, having over 15 years experience with Apple Computers, the Glossy Screen is the stupidest and most irresponsible idea ever. So what HP, Compaq, Dell and the like decided Gloss was all the craze!...
Apple should know better than to jump on the bandwagon by now being the trend setters they have ALWAYS been. Apple should offer the option the way they do with their Laptops so one can choose if they want glossy or matt. Being a color correction expert, the gloss is just the icing on the doodoo brown cake for the 20" Aluminum iMac TN Displays. Either way you cut it, garbage is garbage and covering it up with something that adds blinding glare is just that... A cover up.
I was one of the first schmucks who bought one of these 20-inchers and it is the sole Apple computer purchase I've regretted from day one. Sure it looks pretty and all and is quite elegant but make no mistake about it... the Aluminum iMacs fall FAR short of Apples mark ranking right down in the gutter with the disaster that was the Quadra series before Mr. Jobs came back to Apple and cleaned house.
If anyone wants to buy mine I'll let it go stacked with all the software & 3 Gigs of Ram for $1,000.00 shipped!

I dropped the phone, but not light ! I tried to start it with the restoration and upgrading but I do not , what can I do ?

If you dropped the device and cannot get it to start up, then you have probably damaged it to the point it needs to be looked at by Apple or your Authorized Apple Service Provider, whomever handles service in your location. User damage is not covered under warranty, so be prepared to pay.

  • IMac G3 won't boot after updating the firmware and upgrading the OS!

    Hi! Everyone,
I have an iMac G3 333MHz (five flavors) which comes with 192MB of RAM and 6GB of hard drive. Originally, it was OS 8.5.1 installed, later upgraded to OS 9.2.2. Of course, the firmware has been updated by the appropriate method provided by the on-screen instructions before the installation of 9.2.2. After successfully updating the firmware and installing Mac OS 9.2.2, the system booted up and worked fine. However, after shutting it down and powering it up a few days later, I have encountered a critical problem:
    1. At first, the iMac would chime and displayed a smiley-mac finder face.
    2. No question mark appeared and the system halted because it stayed at the same screen for about 5 minutes! Also, the keyboard wouldn't respond. For instance, the LED signal light wouldn't light on when Caps Lock was pressed.
    3. I assumed that this is just a typical crash and rebooted the machine via the "reset" button on the right side of the machine.
    4. After restarting, well, no luck, the same condition. Therefore, I rebooted it again by using the method mentioned above.
    5. The condition of sticking at the smiley-mac finder face occurred again! However, this time the iMac wouldn't chime and just displayed the mac face.
    6. Another restart, well, it was getting worse... no chime and no smiley-mac finder face but a white screen.
    7. I was frustrated then and shut the machine down forcefully by rebooting it again and pressing on the power bottom quickly before the screen appears. Also, I unplugged the power cord.
    ---------- After a few hours later ----------
    8. Okay, I then plugged the power cord in and booted it up again, this time, it would chime but stuck at the white screen. => No smiley-mac finder face appeared!
    9. Rebooted it again, the result was as same as step 8.
    10. Another restart, the smiley-mac face finally appeared but still... stuck here and this time, no chime.
    11. I then shut the machine forcefully by using the method mentioned above and let the machine rest for about a day with the power cord unplugged.
    ---------- After resting for a day ----------
    12. I booted it up and it would chime, but no screen (the power button was orange, not green). I then forcefully shut down the machine.
    13. Waited for about a minute and powered it up. This time, I tried to clear the PRAM, but no chime and gave me a white screen. => No luck! As mentioned, the keyboard's LED signal light wouldn't light on even though the Caps Lock key has been pressed.
*Note: The keyboard has been tested on the other computers and it worked. Also, I tried different USB ports to plug the keyboard in. => The USB ports were all in working condition, as I can know from the last successful start up.
    14. Forcefully shut the machine down and tried to enter the Open firmware, no luck. It didn't enter and gave my a white screen.
    15. Conclusion:
    1) After resting for a while, the iMac would chime.
    2) Rebooting too much times would cause the machine not to chime and leaded the screen to become white instead of the smiley-mac finder face.
    3) However, rebooted the machine when the screen became white, the smiley-mac finder face would appear again without chime.
By the way, I could hear the hard disk spinning up so that means the hard disk is working.
Can anyone help me solve this problem? Is it related to the firmware update? Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks!
    Andy

OK, I will try replacing the PRAM battery. Also, the PowerMac G3 and the other iMac 233MHz had the dead batteries. They are still working though... Should I replace them along with the iMac 333MHz? In case of not replacing, will they malfunction in future times? There are some symptoms on this two machines: 1. iMac 233MHz - No chime and no sound when adjusting system volume (the bi sound is not available), but iTunes and other applications can still use the audio device and output the sound via internal speakers; 2. PowerMac G3 450MHz - Will chime but sometimes hard to boot: 1) Chime but no screen; 2) No respond after pressing the power button => the power signal light won't light on. Every time I experienced this, I would open its case, pressing a small button (not quite understand what it does... anyway, just works if system halted.) near the PRAM battery and wait for about a minute, then close the case, and it boots. However, I have to reset "Date & Time"...

  • Has anyone got the calendar and contact sync with MS Outlook to work?

    Office Version:Office 2007Operating System:Windows 7
I've used Outlook for several years. I use the Outlook Connector to link to my hotmail account for mail and Outlook's functionality for contact and calendaring.
Recently my appointments seem to have taken on a life of their own. After entering them they look fine but at some point the appointment title is being changed to "Private Event". I can open the appointment and it looks ok. In fact, the little lock icon for making the appointment private is not enabled so I can find no visable reason for the appointment to be marked private.
I am the only user and I have administrator rights. Also, none of my much older appointments are being changed, most of them being reoccurring appointments that haven't been opened in some time.
It looks like what you might expect if you were a delegate on an Exchange calendar. But in this case my Outlook is just a local, standalone installation with no Exchange server.
I can't be absolutely certain but I think the timing of when this started was a couple of weeks ago when I attempted to set up sync between my iPod Touch and Outlook. I never opened Outlook [that I know of] during the process. I just set the sync options in iTunes to Outlook. Nothing ever got copied over to the iPod but I think that the privacy issue began about the same time.
Any idea what may be causing this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes thats correct & it should showup if already checked.
    When I checked the https://p15-calendars.icloud.com/holiday/FR_fr.ics
also https://p15-calendars.icloud.com/holiday/UK_uk.ics ofcourse it could be any page from
p 0- to p 20- but nothing happens from the UK one but the FR it auto downloads does not instal into
Calendar it will ask you for permision first.
I have many calendars too Europe, Asia etc:
This is what info of active Holiday Cal looks like.

  • Anyone tried the DCT and IDCT code?

    Hi,
I was linked to the following link which provides a DCT and IDCT code:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=426&thread=482368&start=15&range=15&hilite=false&q=
However, when I tried to run it, the resulting (IDCT-ed) array seems to be very different from the origianl array.
For example, the first array element is 1.0, but after the DCT-IDCT process, it becomes 259.99997. And many other become 0.0 or -ve numbers.
I would like to ask if anyone has tried to use that? Does it work....? If not, is there any way to correct it? Or are there any other links to DCT-IDCT with Java source code? I really need it.....
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
I guess I have made a mistake in using the methods.
The code CAN IDCT the FDCT data it creates. Just take care of which float array in the IDCT method is the output array (the 3 argument).
Sorry about the misunderstand of the code and any confusion caused.

  • I took the plunge to upgrade!

After all the info seeing about Mt. Lion & Logic Pro X, I waited on upgrading. Finally I took the steps. Went to Mt. Lion first..... no problems... seems to work very well on my Mac Pro 2 x 2.26 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 GB ram. Then I loaded in Logic Pro X.  After the last few days of testing and using the programs, I am very satisfied with the new upgrades. No crashes or anything bad, so far. All in all, a very good experience changing over. In my case, I have had no problems in the past with upgrading. I have been a Logic user since 2.6 version. I have been lucky and not had problems like other users have had on this forum. But, with that said, I DO NOT put alot of programs on my computer. It is almost 100% music programs, no junk apps, games and etc. I would recommend staying away with putting everything in the sun on your computer. It only causes heartaches in my humble opinion. Just thought I would pass along the info for the people who are thinking of upgrading.  Life is good............... :-)

  • Can anyone explain the split and overlapping date ranges in PHOTO moments.  I would have expected each date to have its own slot.  What logic is used for deciding which photos to include and where to split them?

iPad Air iOS 8.1 Stock Photo App.  14000 Photos. Overlapping date ranges in Moments.  What is the criteria used for deciding after import where photos are included in Moments.  I was expecting each day to have its own exclusive slot for example, not 26 - 27 January 2007 with 8 photos then 27 January 2007 1 photo.  Why is there not two seperate slots, one for the 26th and one for 27th??   This makes locating photos by day more arkward than it need be and seems to follow no logic.  This occurs over 150 times and is very confusing.  Is this an issue or expected behaviour?
