Anyone use a satellite uplink to access the Internet?

I am getting increasingly frustrated with my dialup connection. There is so much I am locked out of on the Internet without broadband.
I live in a hilly, rural area where there is no hope at this time of cable access, and our telephone line will not supprt DSL and from what I hear Verizon will not be remedying this.
So, I am looking at satellite setups. Do any of you use a satellite to connect to the Internet? Systems are pricey and the monthly fees are determined by the speed one desires. I don't know anyone who uses one, so I am looking for input from those reading this discussion who do.

I live in a similar area and have been using WildBlue (wildblue.net) satellite for about a year now. With a couple glitches that were quickly taken care of, it has been a satisfactory service. The dish handles up and downloads at whatever speeds you pay for (3 different contracts available; I use the fastest). No need for a related modem connection; that method is ancient history.
FYI, I have a wireless router connected to the satellite modem, and 2 iMacs hardwired (ethernet) and a MacBook Pro (wireless). I used Cocktail to optimize the network settings for satellite. All 3 machines can be online at the same time.

  • I do not have access to wifi - I use cellular data only to access the Internet. How can I download large apps without jail breaking or wifi? Frustrated!!

I have an IPhone 4. Heaps of apps are larger than apples restricted download limit. I made the mistake of upgrading an app, needing to delete it and trying to reinstall only to find that I have to connect to wifi. I don't have the luxury of wifi. I paid for the app so I'm furious.  I'm not too keen on jail breaking. Any one have ideas to work around this..... Why is there a restriction?

Yes that's right - not everyone does, why do you (and obviously apple) assume so? I'm trying not to say anything as condescending as you have but it's getting difficult.
There doesn't seem to be any logical reason for this limit. I'm paying for the data I use so why does apple have a say in what apps I can download.  It's a load of b****.
So thanks for stating the obvious. I know I'm not the only loyal iPhone user to have this problem so hopefully someone clever at apple will pay attention and make some changes soon.

hello - my ipod touch worked well until a couple of months of non-use. Now, I cannot access the internet thru my wifi. All my other devices have no such problem. I have tried resetting wifi, "forgetting network" turning wifi off and on....nothing works....can anyone help?

    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router.
    - Reset networks settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

Does the iPod see the network? Error message? Does the iPod connect to other networks?

  • Why can one mac access the internet and not the other?

Hi I have just installed a 2nd generation Airport Express base station. I have setup a network and I can connect to it to access the web. Here's the rub, only my Macbook Pro can connect. My Macbook Air cannot connect? A weird error message says (translated from Swedish): Airport has the selfapplied/selfselected IP adress 169.254.67.130 and will not be able to connect to the internet.
Why can one mac access the internet and not the other? Is there something simple that I can do to get more macs to be able to use my Airport Express to access the internet?
    Tech details:
Airport Express 2nd generation (just purchased) model 1392
    Macbook Pro running 10.8.2
    MacBook Air running 10.6.8

It seems the Airbook assigns a dummy IP address so somehow it doesn't reach and receive an IP from the Express. I deleted the previous Express setting restarted the Air connected again, restarted the modem, restarted the Express nothing....
I spoke to the internet provider and the cable modem does not require any username or pw. from the modem to the cable it's one public ip, pure internet is flowing from the modem to the Express but the express doesn't seem to assign any IP address apart from the one assigned to the Macbook Pro.
Do you need a screendump of the settings on the functioning Mac or the faulty one? What settings are you interested in i.e. which tab should it shot?

Like others have said the other people may be using mobile data as opposed to wi-fi. If you're not shy you could ask one or more of those people if they're connecting to wi-fi or mobile data. You could also ask subway employees if there is free wi-fi. If there is they may be able to tell you more about it (ex: if its open, or if there is a password). You could also install an app like wi-fi analyzer that shows you all the networks your phone detects in range, whether they are open or not, and what their signal strength is so you know what connection options you have.

  • I can't access the internet with Firefox on my computer (Windows 7 PC). I have used Firefox as my browser for 1 year but 5 days ago it stopped working even though Internet Explorer worked fine. I can't solve the problem and need some help.Randy Brown

    September 26, 2011
    Dear Mozilla,
I am having some difficulty accessing the internet with Firefox on one of my PC computers. I normally use Mozilla Firefox as my web browser and google is my homepage and gmail is my email system. The operating system is Windows 7. For over a year this system worked perfectly but a few days ago it stopped working. When I launch Firefox now I get the message that that website (www.google.com) is unavailable. In fact, I can’t access any website and I am blocked from the internet entirely within Firefox. My internet connection is fine because Internet Explorer works fine. I can access google and any other website within that web browser. I have investigated all the security issue I can manage and found no smoking gun. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox to no avail. Is Windows 7 compromising the effectiveness of Firefox? Any suggestions or other assistance you can offer would be appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Randy Brown

  • Using my bb as a modem to access the internet

    Hey there,
I need help. I just got a 9300 and would like to know if it is possible to use it as a modem to access the internet. MTN is my carrier. It just frustrates me to have to access some web pages, and they are either too big to open or a cookie-unabled issue. Please please help.
    Thanks.

If you install Blackberry Desktop Manager on your computer you can use your phone as modem but remember that this will quickly eat through any data allowance you have and some providers do charge extra for using your phone in this way.

  • HT201413 i am using windows xp pro on a laptop, i access the internet thru a wireless connection, no problems. i start itunes and it will not connect to the internet

i am using windows xp pro on a laptop and have never had a problem accessing the internet, and still dont.

this can not be a hard problem to solve, but i need help
    thanks

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

I'd maybe try doing a search for Safari on your iPad first (swipe to the left to search). If it shows up in that search you can go to Settings > General > Reset and choose 'reset home screen layout' which will put it back where it would be by default.
    All else fails? Restore it.

Sounds like a bogus pop up. In any case power down your Mac, your modem, your router. Then power back up in 1 minute sequence; modem, router, Mac.

  • IPod touch connects to our wi-fi but cannot access the internet. It functions fine using other wi-fi at other locations just not ours at home. We have 2 other iPods in the house that use ours fine, with no issues....

I have done all the troubleshooting from the support page. The ipod shows that it is connected to our wi-fi and sometimes even shows the ip addresses but it wont let us connect to the internet/itunes store etc... the other ipods in the house use the wi-fi with no issues and this ipod is able to connect to public wi-fi and other location wi-fis and access the internet with no problems. What else do I do?

Thank you for your reply. I have tried your suggestion. Emmm I have an AirLive router, there are so many wires o.O I don't know which one to plug out. I think it is the yellow one which says WAN? But I wasn't so sure. So I tried plugging out each wire and followed your instructions. Sorry, but it didn't work I'm going mad xD! I even tried re-doing your instructions on WAN wire, and it didn't work.
Hmm according to step 4 (Log back into your network using Settings > WiFi > Other. Re-enter your network name (SSID), security, and network password.)
My network name is already available in the list. So I didn't need to do that. Or is it neccesary?
    Thanks a bunch! Reply soon

    Hello,
The services you listed in your post will require a data plan which is provisioned by your wireless provider. You may want to contact your wireless provider to see if you have the correct plan.
