Anyone use RAID as their boot drive ?

I just set up 2 x 500 Gb as a raid 0 via the disk utilites then install Snow Leopard. To my suprise, i hardly see/feel any speed improvement and actually opening and closing folders seem longer. Anyone notice this ???

All depends on the drive's performance, your needs and expectations I would guess.
I had never really found it essential but those working with heavy large CS4 files can. And to use RAID0 for scratch; for media.
Today, I think SSD is best bet or a pair 60GB, or WD 10K 600GB VelociRaptor, etc.
And keep everything that is not OS and apps related on another array or hard drive.
When I was using 15K boot drive, two just gave me larger volume was all, but having an array of two 10K drives for data/media along with 15K, yes.

Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Are you actually having a problem with the new Lacie drive, or are you just asking is the Lacie drive somehow different from your old G-Drive?
From a connection standpoint, most Lacie desktop drives have both USB and FireWire connections, just like the G-Drives do.  You would connect and use it the same as a G-Drive.
Regarding capturing to the external HD, if you are using a camcorder that has FireWire (iLink) connection, it is not advisable to have an external FireWire HD connected to your Mac at the same time as your camcorder; there are often communication conflicts between the camcorder and the hard drive if they are connected at the same time.  The conflicts usually appear as either dropped frames or a complete freeze.   This is more common with Canon miniDV camcorders but I have also seen this behavior with Sony miniDV camcorders.  (The problem is the camcorder's FW implementation, not the hard drive.)  The workaround is to capture to your Mac's internal HD and later copy the captured video to your external HD.

  • Anyone use STARLOGIC as their host?

Hello does anyone use startlogic as their host?
I just signed on with them and I cant get dreamweaver to
hookup to the site via FTP. Does anyone know how to do this
    successfully?
I already tried and I keep getting an error that says the
folder doesnt exist or it says there could be a permission problem.
Its very frustrating. Startlogic told me its an "adobe problem", so
if anyone knows how to setup dreamweaver via FTP to thier site,
    please share!!!
    Thank you very much.

Access FTP of course, should have mentioned it anyway

  • What sustain pedal - exact make, model, type (momentary) is anyone using successfully on their controller? (I'm using m-audio)

what sustain pedal - exact make, model, type (momentary?) is anyone using successfully on their keyboard
    ? (I'm using m-audio controller)

I took an old Guitar cable, snipped off one plug, connected strand one to a metal plate and strand two to the metal part of a weighted lever. Plug it into the sustain port of my midikeybs. Press the lever onto the metal plate: sustain on. Let go: sustain off.
Even simpler: take a cable with a (mono) plug at on end and the naked two strands (mantel & core) on the other side. If you connect the two strands: sustain! if you disconnect the strands: sustain off.
What I am trying to say is: a sustain pedal is as simple as a doorbel button: on or off. So all that "the maker" can provide is "built quality", but really, any improvised simple momentary contact switch will do. In other words: there's really NO electronics to it, and if it is sold as a MIDI sustain pedal, it 'll work. But a doorbell button connected to jack cable will also work, so make and model (for a pure sustain-only pedal) are irrelevant.

If anyone uses optonline as their email service provider, do you have a problem with your MacBook Pro synching emails with the Optimum server?  For example, when I delete an email from my inbox on my MAC Book, it does not delete the email in the inbox on the server.  I just bought an iPhone:  when everything synch's through iCloud, all the messages from the Optimum server are on my iPhone versus the messages from the inbox on my MacBook. Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks very much

  • RAID 1 of boot drive without reformatting?

    Hello,
Under Leopard, I was able to enable RAID 1 on a boot drive without having to move data, reformat, move data back, etc., using:
    +diskutil enableRAID mirror disk0+
This has worked for me many, many times without issue.
I'm now attempting this on a Mac Pro boot drive running 10.6.2 using:
    +diskutil appleRAID enable mirror disk0s2+
But, it's not working. Actually, it's working in that it enables RAID 1 on the drive, but as a result, the Mac Pro will no longer BOOT from the drive. The drive is available (ie. I can access it if I boot from another drive with an OS on it, etc.) and the drive shows up in Startup Disk (in System Preferences) as a bootable drive, but it DOESN'T show up when I boot the machine holding down the option key. As soon as I delete the RAID, the drive is bootable again.
Does anyone know if there's a way to enable RAID 1 on a boot drive under SL without the need to reformat? Other options/solutions (3rd party, etc.)?
    Regards,
    Kristin.

    Hi Kristin,
I'm seeing exactly the same problem, but I thought it was limited to having two raid sets and bless getting confused.
My MacPro3,1 has two RAID mirror sets and it appears the wrong Boot OS X partitions are used.
The volume I would like to boot from is a mirror of disk0s2 and disk1s2 and mounted at /Volumes/srvosx. Disk Utility successfully created the two Boot OS X partitions disk0s3 and disk1s3.
Then I restored a working system onto the raid volume using asr.
However, when using bless, it activates the Boot OS X partitions of the other raid set, which has no system installed. So this choice makes no sense at all. The other raid set is composed of disk2s2 and disk3s2 and mounted at /Volumes/data.
This is the output I get from bless:
bless --folder /Volumes/srvosx/System/Library/CoreServices --bootefi --setboot --verbose
    EFI found at IODeviceTree:/efi
Mount point for /Volumes/srvosx/System/Library/CoreServices is /Volumes/srvosx
Common mount point of '/Volumes/srvosx/System/Library/CoreServices' and '' is /Volumes/srvosx
    GPT detected

    0 : <CFString 0x1006016a0 [0x7fff702c5f20]>{contents = "disk2s1"}
    1 : <CFString 0x10001a2c0 [0x7fff702c5f20]>{contents = "Data Partitions"} = <CFArray 0x1006012d0 [0x7fff702c5f20]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0x100601830 [0x7fff702c5f20]>{contents = "disk2s2"}
    2 : <CFString 0x100019a20 [0x7fff702c5f20]>{contents = "Auxiliary Partitions"} = <CFArray 0x100601280 [0x7fff702c5f20]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0x7fff702ae5b0 [0x7fff702c5f20]>{contents = "disk2s3"}
    Substituting booter disk2s3
I can get it to boot just fine by manually populating the Boot OS X partitions, but this is a pain.
I have tried to figure out what is going on from the bless source code at
    http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/bless/bless-71.1/libbless/RAID/BLGetRAIDB ootDataForDevice.c
But since bless seems to get the information about the Boot OS X volumes from IOKit, I also checked the device tree with IORegistryExplorer (Developer Tools). Everything looks fine though.
I wonder where the linking between the raid volume and its boot helper partitions is done. Clearly it does not work right in my case and I suspect it could also be the same problem in your case.

  • Using External HD as Boot Drive

The original HD in my 17 Flat-Panel expired.
I can't bear to part with this computer and its great widescreen swivel monitor. I only wish to use it as a family web surfer, so I'm not interested in paying to have the repair shop break into the shell nor am I capable of doing it myself.
Would an external HD used as the boot drive be enough to run this Mac in this way?
If so, can anyone suggest the minimum HD specs necessary to do this?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Vince

    Hi there:
An external FireWire enclosed hard disk drive (boot-capable FireWire - not all are able to do this
due to some differences in the chipset which controls data flow in the enclosure.) With an external
power supply, and an installed hard disk drive probably larger than 250GB, a buffer of at least
16MB, and a spin rate of 7200 RPM should do the job. To avoid WD brand internal hard drives
may be an advised choice to save you concerns later on. Some people like them, but there are
more compatible choices in Seagate, Maxtor, Hitachi/IBM, and a few others. - Western Digital is
not high on my list of replacement boot disks.
As to the brand of the enclosure, you may have to consider some of the Mac-friendly vendors
who have a good return policy should the drive unit or enclosure fail to perform as desired. If
you someday chose to have this external drive (outside of the FireWire enclosure) put into
the iMac G4 17" to replace the worn-out one, this drive should match those of the original's
size (shape) specifications to physically fit; & it cannot be an SATA-type drive. PATA or ATA
and not serial ata, is the kind that would work in the older G4 as an internal replacement, too.
An external enclosure with an SATA drive could work, solely as an external; but you could
save a bit of time by having a drive on hand just in case you find opportunity to actually fix
    the tired iMac G4 correctly.
The cost to get into the iMac G4 to change the clock battery, is almost the same as having
someone go inside and replace the hard disk drive. Only the parts differ in cost; plus a bit
for the time. The big chunk of time is knowingly attending to details, such as thermo paste
and torquing screws, cleaning dust out, and putting it together correctly.
If you already have a suitable drive on hand - {probably an extra, so you still have the FireWire
enclosure as a bootable backup to the computer, and a source for a clone to move into the
computer whenever that gets the proper fix} - that would save you from some higher costs if
you do get a best brand internal hard disk drive replacement for that fix.
Is there a mac user group in your area? You may find someone among those members in a
local group who has successful experience and a place to properly replace parts in the iMac
G4 you have, and restore its functions correctly. The internal RAM chip can be at least 512MB
and that can give the computer a good basis for functioning in Tiger; and a 1024MB laptop RAM
in the user-accessed slot would be more than adequate for most uses the machine could see.
...In addition to the hard disk drive; fast, large, with large buffer, and new, inside the computer.
The clock battery, a new hard disk drive, larger internal RAM in hard to get to slot, and a
de-dusting. Those could be good to do when thinking of ways to keep the iMac running.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • GT683: swapping RAID0 HD config for non-RAID/AHCI SSD boot drive

A question re: MSI skus which come with 2x HDs in RAID0 config. My system (GT683DXR-603US sku) came with 2x 500GB HDs (WD5000BEKT) in RAID0 config.
First thing I did was to replace this with a Crucial M4 256GB ssd, though prior to this I took an image of the stock system (prior to even booting it up the first time) and restored said image onto the SSD.
The first time I booted off the SSD (no other HD in the unit, as I pulled both of the WD 500GB out to try the SSD alone), I went into the BIOS and changed the SATA config from RAID to AHCI. But Win boot cycle almost immediately resulted in a blue screen. I then changed SATA config from AHCI to IDE, w/the same boot result. Finally, set the BIOS config back to the original RAID, and Win7 booted fine.
Upon confirming SSD Win7 boot and testing operation successfully, I pulled the SSD, place the 2x 500GB HDs back in the system, just long enough to break the RAID 0 array.
Replaced the SSD in the primary bay, and left one of the 500GB HDs in the 2nd bay, and that's how I'm using the system now: Crucial M4 SSD boot drive, WD Scorpio 500GB data drive ... with the BIOS SATA config set to RAID mode.
So the system is working now, but question is - should I pursue trying to change the BIOS setting from RAID to AHCI mode? I'm thinking that in order to get the SATA 6Gbps performance out of the Crucial M4, the Intel SATA config needs to be set to AHCI ... yet apparently I first need to modify the Win7 config (the SATA driver, perhaps?), before I can modify the BIOS sata config?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

bump ... any thoughts? I'm thinking to leave my sysetm in RAID mode, as from what I've read recently Intel storage mgr supports TRIM in RAID mode as well as AHCI.

  • Problems stting up RAID (Mirror) for boot drive.

I have a Mac that I want to setup mirroring on the boot drive (it's running Mac OS X Server and once I get everything going I need to minimize downtime).
Since you can't move a drive with data into a raid set I first cloned the boot drive to a 3rd drive, booted off that drive, then set the two 80gb drives up as a mirror. after cloning the data from drive #3 back to the now mirrored pair I can't boot off the mirror.
I've tried using both the Startup Disk preferences and also the bless command to mark the raid as the device I want to boot from but it doesn't recognize it as a bootable device.
What do I need to do to make the raid bootable?
    thanks,
    Bill

The drive I want to boot off (the mirror) is "Macintosh HD"
The temporary drive it's running on now is "Macintosh HD 0"
Both drives show up in the startup items preference panel, I have "Macintosh HD" selected. When I hit restart it fails to recognize it as bootable and fails back to the other one.
I'm not sure which folder you want the permissions set on. Here's what it looks like right now.

  • Why does mac mini power shut down when trying to use external harddrive as boot drive?

I connected a OWC Mercy Elite Pro external hard drive that has it's own power source to my mac mini. It's connected by firewire and I'm trying to use it as an external boot drive. The problem is when I have the power turned on the OWC before I turn the power on the mac mini, the mac powers up but then shuts down after about 30 seconds. However, if I wait to turn on the OWC power after the mac boots up there is no issue. Of course this defeats the purpose of using the OWC as a boot drive because it needs to be on before the mac boots up. I don't have any issues using another external hard drive as a boot drive that doesn't have a power source.

Hmmm, very strange, could there be a ground loop where the OWC drive is plugged in?
If you hold alt or option key at bootup, without the OWC drive, once the boot manager shows up connect the OWC drive, wait, does the OWC drive show up eventually as a boot choice, or what happens?

Furthermore, if anyone uses a different scanner for this jobs, please tell me about it.

I am unsure about the dependencies, it compiled fine here. Maybe anyone would give it a try, see supported scanners here:

  • Anyone using a LaCie external SATA drive?

LaCie has a "LaCie Two Big with PCI-E Card 2-Disk RAID System with SATA II" which might work for my purposes.
I'm using a late 2005 G5 Quad with PCI-Express slots. I wonder if anyone with a similar G5 has tried this drive and might say what their experience with it and the included PCI-Express card has been?
    Thanks, denny

No experience with that particular LaCie or PCI-e. However, I have some experience with LaCie external FW drives, Granite Digital SATA drive(s)/enclosures with a Highpoint PCI-X card and a MacGurus SATA II drive/enclosure with the Sonnet PCI-X card and of the bunch I MUCH prefer the MacGurus. Sold all my LaCie drives after having to send a 500GB drive back... and then it came back still broke. THe only FW drives I have left are "old" G-Tech drives. The Granite Digital is OK, but LOUD. I love everything about the MacGurus enclosure, especially port multiplication.

  • Does anyone use "Transmit" as their FTP program

If anyone knows how to use "Transmit" to upload a web site, perhaps you could give me some assistance, since I cannot locate a manual for "Transmit."
    Thanks
    <Edited by Host>

Google has a plethora of useful sites one of which is this one:
Configuring Transmit 4 (3rd Party App) on Mac OS X
Have you looked at the Transmit Help File?  It has a number of sections which can help you like:
Synchronizing a local and remove folder
    Working with connections and favorites
The basic information you need, provided by your host support personnel, is the server address, your customer name and password and the protocol to be used:
Plug those into a new "Favorites" window and you should be ready to go:
Using the more options section of that window you can locate the folder holding your website on your hard drive
    This is what you get:
Just copy from window on left to window on right or use the Sycn button at the top.

  • Does anyone use Xfinity for their home Wifi?

If so, is yours very slow? Xfinity advertises lightning speeds but I am not getting anything close to fast! Please help!!

I have Xfinity and it works fine.  Have you called Comcast?  Are you only experiencing slow speeds on your phone or on all devices?  On my iPhone, my Wifi was a slow so I did a full reset of my internet and then reset my phone's network settings.  This seemed to speed things up.
    To reset internet:
Unplug wireless router electricity and then follow the below steps.  If you have phone service and your modem is also used for phone, it has a battery so you have to hit the reset button, you cannot just unplug its electricity:
    Cable Modem Users
Reset your cable modem by pressing and holding down the reset button, located on the front or back of your modem, for five seconds. If there’s no reset button, then power cycle your modem.
    To power cycle your modem:
    Shut down your computer.
Unplug the cable modem from the electrical outlet.
Wait 10 seconds, then plug the cable modem back into the electrical outlet.
Unplug your router from the electrical outlet.
    Plug your router back in.
Wait 30 seconds, then turn your computer back on.
XFINITY Internet & Voice Modem Users
    Shut down your computer
Find the reset button on the back of the unit.
Use a pen or any pointed, non-metallic object to press the reset button until you see the lights on the front of the unit go off.
Release the reset button and wait for the unit to cycle up (this may take up to five minutes).
Unplug your router from the electrical outlet.
    Plug your router back in.
Wait 30 seconds, then turn your computer back on.
    Reset phone's network settings.

  • Anyone use invisibleSHIELD on their iPhone 3GS?

Does the invisibleSHIELD hinders the capability of the iPhone in any way?

Each one of the responses on this could potentially be different. I use the shield only on the back of my 3GS. I didn't want to give up the feel of touching on the iphone glass screen so didnt put the shield on the front.
Using a case and masking the sexiness of the iphone profile never made sense to me. So I stay away from the cases.
