Anyone used a Firewire A/B switch with audio interfaces?

I've got an RME FireFace 400 that I'd like to share between two boxes.
I've heard horror stories about unplugging or pluggin in Firewire to (I guess?) live machines - where the interface or the Firewire port got zapped.
Is this safe to do if.
1. Both machines are off (seems a no brainer)?
2. One machine is on, and switch would take firewire from 'off' machine to 'on' machine?
3. Both machines are on (switch from one to the other)?

I've heard horror stories about unplugging or pluggin in Firewire to (I guess?) live machines - where the interface or the Firewire port got zapped.
I've heard these too, usually when the connectors get worn and sloppy through plugging/unplugging and an FW400 connector may get put in the wrong way round and -- poof!
Maybe a switch would work OK if it's a 'break before make' I have video production friends who use FW switches and patchbays from http://www.signvideo.com/ Maybe worth trying?

Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Are you actually having a problem with the new Lacie drive, or are you just asking is the Lacie drive somehow different from your old G-Drive?
From a connection standpoint, most Lacie desktop drives have both USB and FireWire connections, just like the G-Drives do.  You would connect and use it the same as a G-Drive.
Regarding capturing to the external HD, if you are using a camcorder that has FireWire (iLink) connection, it is not advisable to have an external FireWire HD connected to your Mac at the same time as your camcorder; there are often communication conflicts between the camcorder and the hard drive if they are connected at the same time.  The conflicts usually appear as either dropped frames or a complete freeze.   This is more common with Canon miniDV camcorders but I have also seen this behavior with Sony miniDV camcorders.  (The problem is the camcorder's FW implementation, not the hard drive.)  The workaround is to capture to your Mac's internal HD and later copy the captured video to your external HD.

  • Anyone using a Yamakasi Catleap 2703 Monitor with a Retina Mac Book Pro?

    Hi,
Anyone using a Yamakasi Catleap 2703 Monitor with a Retina Mac Book Pro?  If so, is it working well and would you do it again?  Is it compatible with the Apple dual DVI cable?
    Thanks,
    Alan

I just got a Yamakasi precision 2703.  I'm using it with a 13" macbook pro (non retina).  I got it working with a thunderbolt / minidisplayport to dual link DVI adapter from monoprice for $~70.  At first I didn't think it was going to work, plugged it in, turned on the display, nothing happened.  I unplugged, plugged the USB cable back in and the monitor came to life.  Working great so far.  I bought mine from green-sum on ebay.  The recommend not using this monitor with apple computers due to overheating issues... I don't see why that would be the case, though.  I've only been running it for a couple days, but so far no issues, and I've been happy with the monitor, no dead pixels, no bleed in the corners.
The monitor stand on the 2703 isn't too bad, a little wobbly but not as bad as the others from what I've read.  The monitor does sit a little low, though.  I have a much sturdier stand coming from monoprice for $20+shipping, which will provide tons of adjustment, both height and rotation.
    Good luck!

  • Anyone using Cakewalk/Roland A800-pro controller with Logic?

I'm looking to buy an extra keyboard besides my Fantom X8 to use onstage and trigger sounds from the Fantom. So it has to have a classic MIDI-out and a nice keybed. The A800-pro seems the right board to do that.
But when at home I want to use it with Logic also. The A800-pro has the ACT system of Sonar integrated, but I don't use Sonar, I use Logic on a Macbook Pro (wich maybe will be taken onstage too).
Is anyone using the Cakewalk A-pro series with a Mac? How does it function as a controller? Or what other board do you recommend instead? Does it funtion well with mainstage?
    Thanks in advance, Wilmar

Thank you both for your input. I am back on the case again, this time with a fully functioning FCB1010. Right ou of the box the pedal does successfully send volume and pan with expression pedal a and b respectively.
What I would next like to accomplish is to have exp. ped. b now control a plug-in parameter instead, the pedal range on the fuzz-wah plug-in of Logic Pro 7 for expample.
When I use Automation Quick Access to edit the assignment of ped. b as Bryan suggested, Logic appears to be receiving the info from ped. b and creating the new assignment (as indicated in the Controller Assignments window), and yet the actual functionality doesn't change, that is, ped. b continues to control pan.
    Any suggestions?

  • My firewire port works with ext hd but not with audio interface

2010 Imac 21.5 running 10.8.5. My firewire port works with ext hd but not with audio interface. The local authorized Apple tech said that I need a new motherboard, but my firewire ext drive works perfectly. I don't understand. Thanks.

You must go to the website of the audio interface manufacturer and look for, download and install updated drivers for the audio device you are using.
This is not, neccessarily, an Apple issue.

  • Has anyone used the new 5K retina iMac with Lightroom

Has anyone  used Lightroom with the new 5K Imac. If so any problems ?

Just bought one - arrives next week. From what i can tell it's should be the fastest mac for lightroom. Processor speed is most vital. Doesn't really use all the mac pro multiple cores as I understand 4 is plenty (correct me pls?) and 16Gb ram should hopefully do it. Getting a raid thunderbolt 2 drive for image storage which will daisy chain with my eizo monitor. Choose 3tb internal fusion as I understand full SSD doesn't really help too much. 2GB graphics plenty unless you're doing video maybe?.
Only issue is I have a series of archive 3TB firewire 800 drives which are daisy chained. the questions is how will these work with an adapter but this remains to be seen....

  • Has anyone used the Panasonic BT-LH2600WP monitor with Premiere CC and AJA T-TAP?

I'm considering investing in the Panasonic 26" BT-LH2600WP to use as a color correct monitor with my 27" imac and a aja T-tap (thunderbolt to sdi adapter).  Has anyone done this or know if there are any quality issues?
    thanks
    Phil

Phil, I have a similar set up, but I have the 17-inch Panasonic SDI monitor. Premier works okay with the T-Tap, with some minor yet annoying bugs.
If I monitor audio via HDMI from the T-Tap, which I prefer, then my Panasonic monitor and its matching audio are about half a second out of sync with the iMac display. (But the HDMI audio is perfectly synced with the Panasonic SDI video.) This is annoying because both the Panasonic and the iMac are directly in front of me, and it's confusing seeing the out of sync iMac image. Definitely not something to show any clients.
If I switch my audio monitoring to "Adobe Desktop Audio," which is the feed from the iMac's headphone jack, this problem disappears. In that case, the Panasonic and the iMac display are almost perfectly matched up. However, now I'm getting lower quality audio, with added digital-to-analog processing in the signal.
Using the T-Tap is smooth and trouble free in Final Cut Pro X, but in Premier it is a bit buggy. That said, it works mostly okay.
While we're on the subject, can anyone suggest the best Preferences settings in Premier to use the AJA T-Tap? I may be missing something.
    Thanks!

  • Anyone Using Z-Wave Built-In Switches?

    Greetings fellow Home Control users!
I think this Home Control has the potential for becoming a great feature.  Right now, I just have the incandescent lamp module for lighting control and I find it to be not particularly useful because you have to bend way over behind the lamp stand to turn on the light if you left the device in the OFF state before turning off the switched outlet from the wall switch.  The point being I want and need the ability to turn the lights on and off in the usual way at the wall switch but also would like the option to use the z-wave control.  The solution would be to purchase a Z-Wave wall switch (2 way or 3 way) from GE, Leviton, or one of the other suppliers and replace the wall switch with the Z-Wave switch.  Has anyone done this yet with the Verizon system and if so, how well does it work for you?  Thanks.
    David

Short story, based on my experience below, is that devices outside of what's purchased from Verizon aren't currently supported.
After I hooked up my home monitoring and control system I couldn't find any info about supporting other devices either, so I purchased a GE Z-Wave Wireless Lighting Control Dimmer Switch.  I got it locally so that I could return it if it didn't work.
I had hopes, because for one, when I installed my thermostat I didn't click through the icon on the add devices page, and it added an additional thermostat.  There's still a spot for one on the Devices Settings page saying "Device has been shipped - Setup Device" because I didn't click through it the first time.  I didn't realize I had to because I got the hang of using the remote to pair after setting up the other devices.  So, with this behavior, I thought as long as the system can recognize the exact device you could potentially add others (now I don't know how far Verizon goes, but they could even be working with manufacturers on specific devices codes to keep the system locked down and proprietary).  This particular GE dimmer switch appears to be made by Jasco, who also seems to make the plug-in light module offered by Verizon.  I was hoping this similarity may help make it recognizable by Verizon.
Since I had my doubts, I very carefully setup a little test scenario with romex and a couple replacement plugs rather than going through the trouble of fully replacing a light switch.  I went through the procedure of pairing it with the remote, which seemed normal.  I went back to my computer and the Verizon page had a pop-up that suggested a device had been added, but there were no options to name and configure it.  I tried several times, but no luck.
I think what's happening is that the z-wave components, like the gateway and remote are pairing with the device.  However, on the Verizon side, they don't know what it is and how to handle it, so it can't really do anything about it until it's programmed into the system to be supported.  From what I understand of the z-wave protocol each type of device has a specific device code.  Since there's a variety of different devices, they each have a set of instructions to communicate back and forth.  I can see how initially it's overwhelming to support a long list of devices and keep it user friendly, but hope that they'll continue to grow it.
I agree with everybody else here, that built-in devices like this will really make the system useful.  Otherwise being limited to plug-in devices doesn't offer enough of a whole home control solution to do much with.  Even before I signed up with the verizon service I was researching MiCasaVerde which seems to be much more expansive, but slightly more DIY.  The key difference is that you have to purchase the gateway for like $200-300, but don't pay monthly.  If the verizon thing doesn't pan out, I might switch to that, and hope my devices (which appear identical) will work.  In that case, I don't feel too bad because the bundle price was competitive, I'd just miss out on the integration Verizon is adding.

  • Anyone using AP2 on a 2Ghz G5 with Radeon 9600 graphics?

I had high hopes for v1.5 but it just ran too slow on my G5 to be usable. I hoped to upgrade the card to an x800 xt but after being on order through B&H for six months or so with the estimate of availability "within the next 2 weeks" for that whole time, I finally gave up and got my money back from B&H and gave up on Aperture.
I have now ordered V2, and I'm hopeful it will be - if not fast - at least usable now on my 2Ghz G5 with the 9600 card. (3GB ram)
Is there anyone using it with this configuration who could provide me with some feedback?
    Much appreciated!
    Forrest Smyth

    I got a 2x2.5Ghz PowerMac G5, 2 GB RAM, with a 23" Apple Display, and a ATI Radeon 9600 XT..
I also found Ap1.5 to be a bit to slow, but I just stuck with it.. I have now installed the trail version of Ap2.0 and its quite noticeably faster, fast enough for me to keep this Mac for a while longer (unless it breaks)..
Im not entirely sure, but it seems that it takes a bit longer to fully load an image (Nikon D80 RAW files) then in Ap1.5.. but thats not to bad, just use quick view mode to browse around.. and then work on the images you want to work on.
As I said it all works faster, straightening can now actually be done in near real-time
and all the other sliders (even highlight & shadows) are far more responsive..
now I must say this is in an aperture library with only about 200-300 images.. I hope it will stay as fast when I get the full version and get all my 30,000 images in it.

  • New macbooks incompatibility with audio interfaces because of firewire lack

    Hello,
I am a sound engineer and I use my macbook to record music with external audio interfaces such as the digi002 and the digi003 by Digidesign and with the related Pro Tools software which, as you probably know, is the best software for audio recording and is known as the worldwide standard for it.
As my actual macbook is now 4 years old, I was impatiently waiting for the macbook update but I was really astonished when I've seen that apple decided to delete the firewire port on the new model.
This bizarre choice makes the new model incompatible with all the professional audio cards by Digidesign avoiding the use of Pro Tools on these notebooks and forcing me and my colleagues to switch to pcs (or to macbooks pro, if you can afford spending more than the double...).
Can I (we) hope in a sort of new update reintegrating the firewire port which, I say it once again, is fundamental for us in order to continue using macbooks in our job as sound engineers?
    Thanks,
    Sincerely,
    Francesco

The subject has been covered here in multiple threads already. The best way to submit feedback to Apple is through this web page:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html
Whether Apple will ever decide to add Firewire ports back to the MacBook is unknown. Personally I doubt it, but we can hope.

  • Using a USB2.0 Mixer with Audio Interface in GB '09 vs a A/I ?

    Hello,
I am posting re: using a USB 2.0 Mixer (example Allen&Heath Zed Series with or without effects, Mackie USB mixers, etc, to use
rather than a Audio Interface (Which I have done in the past, though one I have did not keep drivers updated past OSX 10.5
Leopard, I have bought and returned a Firewire 400 and a USB 2.0 Audio Interface(s) in the past 10 months, so No recording
I can use a Podxt to get Guitar in via USB but not XLR mics (Vocal or Amp mic's) I have read and read and spoke with people
and get a variety of answers, I am inquiring is this a workable way to get both 1/4 HI-Z inputs (Guitar or Bass) XLR Mics
and line ins to the mixer and USB 2.0 to/from my iMac? I am just looking at going in a different direction, and using Garageband
the Audio Interfaces I had bought both had on screen mixer-routing  (which drove me crazy and to me un needed)
Prior I used a bus powered Tascam US-122, I do want extrenal power (and both Audio Interfaces did that I bought and returned)
I just need a basic sound in-sound out etc, with decent preamps , I have Mics, Guitars, Monitors, MIDI Keyboard, etc
just lacking the source in, (I also wish to avoid headphone monitoring due to ear issues which I do not desire to further

On both computers I have only one account, the fw cable is always the same..
I have purchased a new cable and I'm testing it..
Another thing to say is that the fw port number 2 is generally working better than 1.. I mean, while port 1 never loads my tascam (the computer firewire connection is always loaded succesfully on both ports) port 2 sometimes works.. well this can't be called stability at all =)
Sometimes reastarting computer, unplugging cables etc can help starting succesfully a new session.. I've already resetted PMU but no progress..
All these things don't last longer than one session..

  • Trouble with audio interface (E-MU 0404) on OS X Lion

After I install "OS X Lion" from "Mac App Store" system can't find my audio interface ("Creative E-MU 0404 USB"), I see Audio Card in System Profiler, but it doesn't apear in "System Preference - Audio".
Also, "Creative Proffessional Software" doesn't run under Lion, because it's a "PowerPC" application, but I install update from June, 2010.
Is it possible that driver was written for "PPC", and now "Lion" doesn't support it, and what should I do?

Quite frankly, having to switch to 32-bit mode, to use My 0404 Audio interface, that is btw still being sold alongside competitor interfaces in the same price range (From Cakewalk, Tascam etc. etc.), that have OS X Lion (or at least intel native) drivers that allow their cards to be used with maximum efficiency, is completely unacceptable.
I wrote the tech support, and (like everyone else I've heard about) I got a copy/paste answer, saying that the tech-supporters in E-MU had no idea what the plans of the development team were, in regards to updating the drivers for the E-MU 0404.
Here's the reply I got from them, when I tried to get some clarity on all of this:
           Thomas,
We are sorry to inform you at this time Technical Support has not been informed by product development, as to when
OSX Lion drivers will be available. Technical support is not the place where E-MU discusses or discloses upcoming
product development or non released features and functions. That is done via marketing, usually through an official
press release, and usually done at a trade show event and/or posted on our website.
Please remember the more information you provide, including previous correspondence in your mail, helps in troubleshooting and solving the problem you are experiencing.
    Thank You

Don't forget to check out http://www.EMU.com for your latest drivers, and updates, and EMU Products. E-MU is now featured on YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/user/EMUsupport and FaceBook: http://www.facebook.com/EMUSystems
and I don't blame the tech-support. The entire thing has been thrown on their shoulders, as E-MU seemingly couldn't give enough of a !#€% to even update them about the situation.
I suppose this problem could have been averted a loooooooong time ago, by simply updating the drivers for the unit, when Apple went Intel (I suppose the 0404 is pre 2005, when Apple changed to Intel Architecture? If not, this is even more of an outrage).
As many others, the fact that the drivers were PPC and not Intel makes me wonder if I've been running the interface all this time, with un-needed latency.
This is definitely the last time I buy anything from E-MU, or Creative for that matter.
