Anyone using 2Tb WD My Book Studio Editon II for editing?

It has eSata as an option. Speed seems good -
Just curious to see if anyone has any luck?
I had posted earlier about being sick of 3 daisy chained Lacie drives.
I need one big solution that i can back everything to and use as my capture scratch folder.
any insight appreciated
KB

It is a perfectly workable drive, but it was not built for the kind of repeated and sustained access that editing requires. I use them mainly for back up, and rarely editing. They have not been around long enough for me to say how long mine will last, but count on the fact that they are not enterprise drives.
They should be fine for one or two projects and then act as media storage for the project once completed; make sure you back up every day during the edit sessions, if not more often.

  • Anyone using a WD My Book Studio LX with TM?

I've had my iMac for some time now and I am thinking about adding an external drive for regular backups (as we know, there are two kinds of people: those who back up their stuff regularly and those who will...)
My current HD size is 1TB and I am thinking about using an Western Digital My Book Studio LX 2TB - see here. Is anyone using this configuration? Any thoughts? Good or bad experience? Things that I should be aware of?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

    Loerincz,
I use one of these for Time Machine and it works fine. I would advise you not to load the WD Smartware software that comes with it. You don't need their software unless you want to make use of special functions.

  • Has Anyone Used the WD My Book External Drives for Time Machine?

I'm thinking of getting the Western Digitial 1 or 2 TB My Book (Pro Edition 2 or Studio Edition) External Drives for use with 2 MacPros. Has anyone used these and could I use them with Time Machine? Would I have to reformat them for Time Machine?
    Thanks!
    Ashley

You may, and probably want to format them, even if not TM use, I would anyway. Not everyone is happy with MyBook Pro and TM.
I buy bare FW devices and add disk drive of choice, or just use OWC
    http://www.macsales.com/firewire and works well.
FW800 is also better on the new Mac Pro

  • Anyone using Classroom in a Book, AS 3 for Flash CS4? ...lesson 11

I'm doing the tuts in this book, and have run into a problem. Lesson 11 deals with using AS3 and components to control video. Specifically, to create an XML video playlist that starts a new video upon completion of the previous one.
Well, I can't get it to work. It doesn't seem to be able to find the XML playlist or something. Even the file in the "completed" folder that comes with the book suffers the same problem.
This is pretty aggravating. Any help would be appreciated.

    Lorin,
What I call an endpoint is just one of the anchorPoints at the end of an open path.
I'm not sure where you're having trouble, so do this simple exercise:
First, set your current fill to none, and your current stroke to black.
    1. Line tool: Drag to draw a line. Do that again, so you have two separate lines.
    2. Get the white pointer and deselect everything. (Just click somewhere in the white space of the page.)
    3. Now, with the white pointer, click the very end of one of the lines to select it.
    4. Press and hold the Shift key. Click one of the ends of the other line. Now you should have two anchorPoints selected, one on each line.
    5. Object>Path>Join. A new segment connects the two selected anchorpoints, and what were two paths are now one path with three segments.
That's joining two open paths by selecting endpoints. Now do this:
    6. Deselect.
    7. Black pointer: Select the path. Note that the whole path is selected, because you clicked it with the black pointer.
    8. Object>Path>Join. A new segment connects across the ends of the path, making what was an open path a closed path.
That's using the Join command to close a path without having to select its endpoints.
Does that make sense? Now experiment doing that with some other paths until the results are predictable to you. Then do this:
    9. Scissor Tool: Click the middle of one of the segments of the path to cut it. Deselect.
    10. White Pointer: Drag a marquee selection
around the place where you cut. That means don't click on the points or the path, but drag a dashed selection "box" (selection marquee) around the place where you know the cut is, like this:

  • Anyone use funambol? Want to write a PKGBUILD for it

    Hi all,
Anyone here uses funambol? Its open-source but distributed in binary. I was thinking it'd be good to have an Arch (AUR) package for it. Of course, having the PKGBUILD simply unpack the binary distribution isn't optimal, was thinking of an /etc/rc.d script + /usr/bin links at least, as well as a 'fix' for the 32-bit included JVM issue.
Anyway, I just found this software yesterday, and don't even have it working (as in syncing properly) yet. Would someone who uses it respond here, so I know what would be needed to make a good package for this?

I've got a basic funambol setup working (syncing contacts, calendar, and todo between my palm and Evolution).
The PKGBUILD basically dumps stuff in /opt/Funambol currently. Next is to write up the /etc/rc.d/funambol (shouldn't be too hard) and figure out what sort of .desktop files are needed (probably just the admin utility).
Does anyone know if funambol has support for multiple calendars per user? Or do I have to create a new user for each calendar (and sync separately...)?
Its great that you have it working. i gave up after reading the manual. I think there is a need to change a configuration file for java home in arch 64 bit (the binary file is being bundled with 32 bit jre).
Not a change in configuration file, just rm the folder and ln -s your current java there.
Here's an initial PKGBUILD. No makedepends that I'm aware of (its just cp, rm, ln, chmod). This gives you a working funambol, configuring and stuff is up to the user.
The todo list from the previous post is still undone though .

  • Does Time Machine Make My Book Studio Sleep to Prevent Wear & Tear?

Hi. I don't use the WD SmartWare from Western Digital and have deleted it on my My Book Studio external backup for Time Machine. With just this external Firewire hardisk and Time Machine, does it make it do some kind of "sleep" so it won't have as much wear & tear or regardless of software or hadisks have this sleep feature built-in them? Thank you in advance.
    Gbu.

Hard disk sleep is controlled by the Energy Saver preference pane. It doesn't always work with external hard drives.

  • Has anyone used Malwarebytes or anything similar to protect Mac from virus etc

Has anyone used Malwarebytes or something similar to scan Mac for virus and other security and effiency problems?

I should have been more specific, I wasn't given a Mac to keep, I was given a Mac to clean up. I have almost 20 years experience working with personal computers and I've worked on every major OS that's been released during that time (OS/2, every version of Windows since 3.1, Linux, Mac OS, Unix). I no longer work in a shop specifically fixing computers but my family still gives me their computers to look at whenever they have issues. My cousin just gave me her laptop since she was unable to fill out any web forms that would try to verify her e-mail address, plus she kept getting pop ups to run some MacKeeper software. Had this been a computer I received second hand I would have re-installed the OS regardless of the state it was on, but since she needs the files on her computer for school I figured it'd be much easier to run a Mac OS equivalent of Malwarebytes than to backup everything and re-install the OS.
Unfortunately when you search the internet for a Malwarebytes alternative for Mac OS, the majority of the time you just get posts from people saying "Macs are super secure, don't worry about it you won't get infected", which is a completely useless response for someone whose computer is infected. The rest of the posts responding to people who ARE infected are much like your response "Just re-install the OS" but that doesn't address the underlying issue of what's infecting the computer for those people who can't afford to lose everything. I was eventually able to Google the symptoms of this issue and determine that it was a trojan known as DownLite or VSearch. Once I found where it was located I opened up a terminal, ran sudo su to elevate myself to root, deleted the VSearch folder and files from the terminal, ran ps ax | grep VSearch to find the running application and did a kill -9 [pid] to terminate the app (rather than rebooting.)
Once that was all done I was able to use Chrome and Safari without all of the popups and hijacks. It took all of 5 minutes once I knew what the underlying issue was but I was really hoping to find a program like Malwarebytes so I could just let it scan the computer and tell me "These applications are malicious..." especially since my cousin installed a lot of stuff I would consider junk on her laptop and I didn't want to delete things that are just harmless junk (since she might use them.) Since I ended up having to do this all manually I'm just hoping there's nothing else lingering on the computer that didn't have visible symptoms.

  • WD External HDD My Book Studio 2TB doesn't mount

    Hello there
I was using the My Book Studio 2TB External HDD. It works fine until now. The External Drive just keep blinking light but not mounting on the os. I just wonder what is going on with my drive? Is there any method i can retrieve my data?
    thanks very much

I have WD My Book Studio Edition II. The only way I can format it is via WD software (WD Drive Manager), since my model is the 2TB RAID. That's maybe one of the way you can do it.
On other note, I did experienced some issue with my new Hitachi XL2000 2TB HD. It won't format with disk utility under Mac OS Extended Journal. The only format I can use via disk utility is FAT-32 and some other windows format. But I managed to solve it by going to the partition tab and select option. From there I select GUID option.
Hope this will help to solve your problem

  • Can I use my 2TB WD My Book Essential for the Time Machine feature on the MacBook as well as two other Windows computers (one running 7 and one with Vista)?

Can I use my 2TB WD My Book Essential for the Time Machine feature on the MacBook as well as to store information from two other Windows computers (one running 7 and one with Vista)?

Yes you can but you need to partition the drive into at least 2 separate drives.
To do that you need to use a Windows PC to do the first partitioning. Say you split the drive into two partitions each 1TB (or close to 1TB) each.
Partition fand format both partitions on a Win PC as one NTFS and the other FAT32.
Then move it to the Mac and Reformat the FAT32 partition Mac Extended (Journaled) with a GUID Partition Table.
I have that same drive and that is what I did originally with it. I now have it just for the Mac as I have other externals for the Win systems.
    Good Luck.

  • Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive?

Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive? Apple support tech tried to tell me it wasn't possible and that the only NAS Time Machine could back up to is the Time Capsule, but I'm not buying it. I know it's doable, but I'm having a hard time figuring out which External HDDs will work and which ones won't.  If not My Book for Mac, is there an External HDD that will work? (Running OS X 10.9.1 - Mavericks, btw...)

Given the nature of backups, my recommendation has always been to use a strategy that is unequivocally supported by Apple. As you already determined Apple Support unequivocally informed you that your proposal will not work, unless your router is an Apple AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected to your Mac
    That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless when they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents.

  • Anyone familiar with Freeverse's Sound Studio application used with iTunes?

I have been using Freeverse Software's Sound Studio application for the last year, which allows me to record workshops I lead, in AAC format, and I've always been able to drag the files into iTunes and play or burn them. Since upgrading to Leopard (and upgrading their software to the newest Leopard-compatible version), when I try to drag a file into iTunes, it won't copy into the library. Freeverse says it isn't a problem with the software.
Anyone know why I might not be able to put an AAC file, recorded onto my MacBook Pro, into iTunes....and a workaround?
    Thanks

Check to be sure that the file suffix is correct ie: .m4a, .mp3 etc.
Can you 'add' to iTunes using the File menu?

  • Anyone using a Yamakasi Catleap 2703 Monitor with a Retina Mac Book Pro?

    Hi,
Anyone using a Yamakasi Catleap 2703 Monitor with a Retina Mac Book Pro?  If so, is it working well and would you do it again?  Is it compatible with the Apple dual DVI cable?
    Thanks,
    Alan

I just got a Yamakasi precision 2703.  I'm using it with a 13" macbook pro (non retina).  I got it working with a thunderbolt / minidisplayport to dual link DVI adapter from monoprice for $~70.  At first I didn't think it was going to work, plugged it in, turned on the display, nothing happened.  I unplugged, plugged the USB cable back in and the monitor came to life.  Working great so far.  I bought mine from green-sum on ebay.  The recommend not using this monitor with apple computers due to overheating issues... I don't see why that would be the case, though.  I've only been running it for a couple days, but so far no issues, and I've been happy with the monitor, no dead pixels, no bleed in the corners.
The monitor stand on the 2703 isn't too bad, a little wobbly but not as bad as the others from what I've read.  The monitor does sit a little low, though.  I have a much sturdier stand coming from monoprice for $20+shipping, which will provide tons of adjustment, both height and rotation.
    Good luck!

  • Help with using anywhere backup on WD My Book studio II

I'm an artist, not a gook, so hardward issues can really mess with me.
I set up a WD My Book studio II as an external hd backup for photogrpahs last Dec. I can't get it to use anywhere backup, nor can I find any info to help me... Spent 2 hours messing with this and am quite frustrated.

I've got same disk and i don't use anywhere backup. Time Machine works with this drive. If you're a photograph you can use Aperture and it's bank features to save your photos. How ever you don't have to think about anything with Time Machine, just select the drive, and may be the repertory you don't want to save. It's done.

  • WD My Book Studio Edition II 2TB?

This product came with 3 software's.
    - One for backup which I did not install, as I use Time Machine.
    - Second "WD Turbo" drivers this also I did not install as WD website says drivers included in Mac OS X are the same as WD Turbo.
    - Third "Drive Manager" this also I did not install as it is used only for setting up RAID & external label.
Currently when I connect my hdd, Mac detects it as a single 2 TB drive & I get speeds of upto 40 MB/ps using firewire 800.
    1) Will installing any of the above s/w really improve the speed?
    2) If I configure RAID 0 using WD drive manager, will I see increase in transfer speed?
    3) After installing WD drive manager & setting up RAID 0, if I am not happy with the results can I completely un-install WD drive manager & remove the RAID config as well?
I also posted this on WD forum's:-
    http://community.wdc.com/t5/External-Drives-for-Mac/My-Book-Studio-Edition-II-2- TB-software-s/td-p/16456

    Don't buy WD
    - Poor support
    - they claim its made for Mac, but their s/w suck
    - Low cache & rpm
    Buy a Lacie or mercury.
