Anyone using 3.5.1 with large JVMs?  Thoughts?

Hello all,
I'm very interested in the possibilities with large sized storage nodes. We've been running 3.4.1 for about a year or so, with 2.5GB JVMs and rock solid performance after some careful GC tuning. What I've observed is that the app needs ~800MB of the heap for itself, leaving 1.7GB for storage. We're running 24 nodes, with that costing us 19GB of potential storage space (800 * 24). If we could run, for example, 1 node (fictitious example) with a 60GB JVM, using 800MB for the application, we end up with ~60GB of storage space vs. ~40GB. That's a lot more room :)
Obviously, GC tuning is going to be different with a JVM of this size.
Has anyone had any experience with large JVMs? What OS? What GC params did you use?
I'll be doing some testing in the next few weeks and will post back results, but wanted to see what kinds of results others were having.
Thanks for your time.
chris

Hi Chris
May first observation about 3.5 is increased memory overhead for distributed cache scheme.
On 32 bit JVM, Coherence 3.4 overhead per entry is about 116 bytes per entry and 3.5 overhead is 164 bytes per entry (in both cases it is a lower bound).
I'm working with large number of quite small objects ~80 bytes (using POF), for me additional 48 bytes are very sensitive.
I believe it is a trade off to speed up partition migration process.
Unfortunately I cannot say anything about perforce, I didn't test it.
I'm looking for results of your tests.
Regards,
Alexey

  • Has anyone used Aperture 2.0 with 8800GT?

Has anyone used Aperture 2.0 with the new 8800GT? I'm about to order a new Mac Pro and wonder if Aperture will get a speed boost with the 8800GT over the HD 2600XT. I've read many times that Aperture is very GPU dependent, but then I've also read, on Barefeats.com for example, that the graphics card really doesn't do that much of a difference after all.
For me, on my dual 2.0 G5 with 4.5GB and a X800XT, what's been most annoying with Aperture 1.5 has been the slow load times for raw images (15-20MB). But now with the quick preview mode in Aperture 2.0, that really isn't an issue any more.
Is the 8800GT worth waiting for, or should I just get the Mac Pro now with the HD 2600XT?

    Hi Don
I'm using Aperture 2.0 with the 8800GT. My system is the new MacPro 8 core 2.8GH with 10GB RAM. I'm shooting Nikon D3 lossless compressed RAW files. Approximately 12-14MB each.
I do not need to use the quick preview mode. Images open instantaneously, either fit to screen or 100%. All the image adjustments are shown with no time lag. My D2X uncompressed raw files,19MB, display in approximately one second with quick preview turned off.
I'm no MAC hardware expert so I don't know how much the speed is the result of the 8800GT but I'm just one happy camper.
    Hope this helps

Anyone using Brother HL-2170W with their Mac? I read some reviews at newegg and they are not bad , but at the apple store the reviews are not that good at all. Is this because it is not working well with Leopard as most printers don't or what?

Verizon informs me that Windows is only needed to download and install some form of authentication and that the free wi-fi hotspot service can be used from then on from the Macintosh side. Even though it's a Windows program, I'm assured that the authorized status will be detected when the Mac laptop is used under OS X

  • Anyone using a 4K monitor with FCP X?

Is anyone using FCP X on a 4K monitor? I'm thinking about getting a Dell 4K monitor as my main monitor but I'm a little worried the user interface support on 4K is weak. I think everything is going to look super tiny.
    Has anyone already experienced this?
    Thanks!

So I have my new Mac Pro set up. 8-Core, 32 gigs RAM, Dual 700 GPUs, 512 gig internal Flash drive.
I purchased the 27" Thunderbolt display as my main Final Cut Pro X screen and I have the Dell UP2414q 4K monitor plugged in as the Viewer display.
I have the Dell set to "Best for Display" and it works fine. I have some 4480 x 1920 RED footage and I have the FCP X Viewers on the Dell. The footage is set to 100% and it bleeds a little off the sides, as it should since the monitor is 3820 wide. It's at its native resolution.
The user interface elements of the second monitor are at normal size - the menu bar, the FCP X view options. Buying a 4K monitor and using Best for Display gives you the desktop the size of a typical 1080 monitor, but it all looks like a Retina display. It's very crisp.
So if you want a second monitor to hold a ton of Adobe palettes, and have a very large desktop, I'd recommend getting a Thunderbolt display, beause this display behaves like a 1080 monitor in that regard. If you want a 4K monitor specifically for color grading 4K footage at the native size so you can see all the artifacts and things you wouldn't see with the footage at 50%, this Dell monitor is fine and it's $890 on Amazon. It's not a professional color grader's monitor, obviously, but it does well for me.
I took some 4480 x 1920 RED footage that had a sky that was gray (the famous Mercedes in the mountains footage). I used the color picker color correction in FCP X and was able to select that sky very easily. I can see why the fat 4K footage is so great in regards to color grading. Because you don't have the massive color gradiation and artifacts you get in the more compressed media, when you use the color picker, it selects a very large, clean, section of the sky. I was able to quickly make the sky more saturated and blue and play it in real time (Better Performance) it's it's perfectly clean with no halos around the tree branches as they move into the foreground of the sky. Very nice!
Nice feature in FCP X is all the effects, transitions, etc., have a "4K-ready content only" button at the top so it only presents you with effects and transitions that work with 4K footage.
It took a lot of time calibrating this Dell monitor. It has the Adobe RGC color space built in but when I set it to that and set the OS X Display color option to Adobe RGB, it all had a very slight purple/pink huge. Very slight. Whites were not pure white like they are on the Thunderbolt and my blue sky had a tinge of pink to it.
I calibrated it with advanced options in the OS X Display preferences. I then connected my Samsung HD LED TV into the HDMI port of the Mac Pro and set it as my A/V display in FCP X. I was able to do the custom color setting on the Dell monitor itself and lower the saturation and RGB values. It took about 15 minutes to get it looking right. Now, I don't see the very slight purple/pink tink. My blue sky looks blue, etc., and it looks exactly how it will look on DVD and Blu-ray and projectors at film festivals.
The Samsung LED TV was a breeze to use. As soon as I plugged it into the HDMI port of the Mac Pro, the displays changed and OS X went to 1920 x 1080 60hz. The color was set to an HD color preset (I forget the number and I disconnected it). Arranging the multiple monitors is as you'd expect, just works.
BTW, I have 2 10 TB 5Big Lacie Thunderbolt 2 hard drives. They are about $1K each at 10 TBs. I have one for my footage and one as a backup with Time Machine. No formatting necessary - just plug them in and go. I plugged in the first one, told OS X no for Time Machine. Plugged in the second one, told Time Machine yes. Renamed the second drive "Backup". I turned off hard drive sleep becuase it's annoying. You hear it spin up, spin down, spin up, etc. as you work.
I used the AJA benchmark and this is what I got with 16 gig test file, 4K video simulation:
    Write 740.3 MB/s
    Read: 849.1 MB/s
    Fast!
FCP X loads in 4 seconds on this system off the internal Flash drive.
    Cheers!

  • Anyone using Blackmagic Intensity Pro with Premiere CS4

I've looked through the threads and have seen similar postings, but no real good answers. Is anyone using Blackmagic Intensity Pro to viiew timeline on a HDTV using the HDMI connector?
I purchasedf the Intensity Pro and can't get it to work with CS4. Any assistance would be appreciated.

If you're using a Core i7 processor, one of the problems might be with the motherboard.  There's only one Intel board that BM has approved (sorry, don't have the model in front of me -- on a piece of scratch paper in my wife's car).
I'm looking to build a new system myself and have been looking at the Intensity Pro card as well.  The main feature I'm looking for is real-time preview and program output to an HD monitor that I'd hook up via HDMI.  I probably also would use it to capture analog sources for audio and video.  I don't have any interest in BM's lossless data capture as it creates monster-sized files.  That's why I was also planning to add Cineform once it's fully approved and working for CS4.  However, as best as I can tell, the Intensity Pro card doesn't recognize the Cineform codec on the timeline.  Does anyone know if and how well these two will function together within Premiere?  (I'm also assuming that the new 4.1 release might make these types of Premiere add-ons work better.)
    Thanks.

  • Has anyone used a MacBook Air with a TV as a monitor?

Wondering if anyone can advise on experience with using a tv as a monitor? I don't believe Mac make just a monitor for this purpose do they?

it's ok, highly pixelated, meaning you will see pixels. I would say its great to watch videos, but any reading or such will be displeasing. Really depends on the pixels per inch of your TV also. But, I would stick with nothing more than 27" for reading or anything text based.

  • Anyone using Tascam DM-3200 with Logic

Anyone using the Tascam DM-3200 with Logic? Sure seems like an easy solution combination of converters and DAW control, plus onboard effects.

    Hey Joseph,
I have this combination. I like it so far. I'm not really a "mixer" person but I am resolute in learning how to use this thing in depth!
Anyways, as far as controlling Logic, I got it working pretty easily. It seems that the faders don't seem as "sensitive" as my Logic Control (I think I mean resolution, perhaps?). I also have not played with the Tascam enough to know what other features are mapped out besides just level faders. It is very easy to switch between a fader layer and the Mackie control layer: just one button press. One thing though is if I have logic set to auto-sync in, and play, it will receive some timecode from somewhere and then stop after 2 bars. Don't know why this is, and it means I'll have to disable the Tascam's midi if I want to sync Logic to, say, Protools.
I connect my old 828 via Adat to Tascam and it sounds so much better than the Analog ins to the Tascam, so I'm happy about that. I have also the 8 Analog input card so I have a total of 24 Analog Ins which is nice too.
If you have any specific questions, I'll try to asnwer them, but so far, i like the combination a lot. My one complaint - they put the Control Room volume way up at the top of the mixer. My keyboard (Roland XV88) protrudes a bit from the front of the mixer, so i can see myself getting back spasms if I reach that volume control a lot!! I guess I'm shorter than the average user! Anyways, the mixer sounds good enogh to my ears.
    Cheers
    Ken
PS The manuals for the mixer are at Tascam's website. You can also take a peek at them to get a sense how things are setup.

  • Anyone using non Apple ram with standard heatspreaders?

    Hi,
Is anyone using non standard Apple ram with normal sized heatsink/heatspreaders and if so have you had any problems?
I can find ram for the same spec that works but they only have the standard thin silver heatspreader attached and am concerned about running temps etc.
If anyones using these modules without problems, please post here!
    Thanks.

Might want to read this article and it has some good information to help you decide.

  • Anyone using Groove Agent 2 with GB202

GA1 in GB1 had to many problems. I couldnt manipulate the interfase. Now i only use Virtual guitarist. Im wondering if GA2 works smoothly. Im also wondering how it would work.
Could it be used on more than one track to create fills etc..
anyone out there using any VST/AU's at all

When used as a VST with Cubase, GA3 can write the MIDI data directly onto an instrument track as the machine is played, skipping the "create external MIDI file/import.
What you need to look at are the automation capabilities.
Every parameter of the GA series can be automated. If you map the song out and "play" GA3's buttons, Logic records your "performance".
Fills, 1/2 Time, Pattern Change...etc are all recordable via automation.
Affer you get the song mapped out and the automation/performance finished the track can then be bounced as audio or exported as MIDI for editing.

  • Using SIT connection manager with large simulink models is extremely slow

    Hello,
I'm trying to use a large simulink model in LabVIEW but once the DLL is correctly generated and the SIT connection manager is invoked to explore the model sinks, sources and parameters, it takes hours to generate the model connections tree. Afterwards, when the connections tree is completed, it is impossible to handle it because every operation performed takes a lot of time and memory (i.e. to expand a block to see which parameters are inside).
The version of SIT I'm using is 2.0.3 with LabVIEW 7.1.
Is there anybody experienced with large simulink models and SIT?
    Thanks and regards.

The VI in the Driver VI called SIT Initialize Model.vi has an input called time step (sec) (-1: use model time step) which does what you want it to. It doesn't actually affect the time step of the solver used in the built model DLL, just the rate at which the main base rate loop actually runs in real time. In fact, base rate loop period would be a better name for this control. If you set it, you won't alter your model, but you will be able to adjust the rate of the base rate loop.
Simply create a control from this input terminal on your driver VI and fill in an appropriate period in seconds. Make sure to set this value as default in the control so that the Driver VI remembers it.
You will have to take into account that your model will still think it's running at the time step it was compiled at. So your model simulation time and the actual wall clock time won't match up.

  • Question for Anyone Using CS4 Production Premium with Windows 7

I'm testing Windows 7 at home with CS3 Production Premium and have not had any issues. Of course CS4 is quite a bit different.
Anyone using CS4 Production Premium on Windows 7 regularly? Any issues to report?
    Thanks

Thanks for replying to my post:

On our systems at work that have XP and Vista + CS4 Production Premium.  I've noticed this with preview files in particular and possibly some others, I don't remember. The "show only exact file" checkbox is greyed out. This is somewhat annoying because projects can have a huge number of preview files with long  cryptic names making it a pain to locate the correct one manually to get the ball rolling. If I don't think it'll take too long to re-render, I just select "skip preview files".
We bought 3 licenses for Windows 7 and I'm encouraged by the performance, reliability and features on my home test system (RC 64) that has CS3 installed. Can't wait to get rid of XP and Vista.

  • Anyone using PNY PC3200 RAM with FISR2 mobo?

I built my system about 6 weeks ago and it was my first venture into Athlon territory. The sales rep helped me get all the stuff I would need, and it seemed to be flawless. Athlon64 3000+, K8T Neo FISR2, and a PNY PC3200 (DDR400) 512MB memory stick. Of course, the only problem that surfaced was when I purchased a 2nd memory stick a few weeks later. It wouldn't even boot. I changed the mobo's settings for ram from "Auto" to "Limit" and chose DDR400, and it would boot, but would randomly freeze up frequently while gaming.
I started playing around with the memory settings and can manage to got it to run for a couple hours before it locked up, but this kind of fiddling is all new to me. Being new to Athlon64 CPUs, I had no idea that memory was such a fussy thing. So the thing is I have these two chips worth $260, and I really don't want to have to scrap them to buy new memory. Some of the things Mem86 tells me doesn't use the exact same terms as the settings in the bios, so I'm not sure if I'm changing things that should make a difference or not. So......
Has anyone out there managed to get this combination of mobo and PNY memory to work reliably? I'm running only the 1 stick now. I'm just not sure which settings I should be actively changing. And PNY doesn't have any kind of documentation (either with the chip or on the web site) that even tells you the voltage range the chip is rated for! The last thing I did was turn off "Spread Spectrum" becuase it mentioned that with overclocking, there was a slight chance of lockups because of the way the clock timings are fiddled with, and I thought it couldn't hurt to do that. I haven't checked out the two sticks with that feature turned off yet though. Anything thing that could make a difference.
This is all new to me, and I've learned a lot by reading the forums, but I still need a little hand-holding if anyone feels up to the task.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I wish I could return the memory, but at this point, I've had it too long. The first chip I had for about 3 weeks before I bought the second one. I wish I had the verto memory, I get the impression it's supposed to be nicer. Anyway, if anyone's interested, the model number for the memory is D512MPC32OPT. There is NO technical specifications wthat come with it (voltages, latency settings, etc.). But thanks for the phone number and suggestion to call tech support. I'll give them a call and see what they say.
The last settings I changed made it run more stable. I actually played a game for 3 hours before it locked up. So I think I'm close. I just don't want to unnecessarily increase settings that don't need to be increased. I disabled spread spectrum on a hunch, but haven't followed through with testing afterwards (I'm running only one 512MB chip now because it's stable that way). Seeing that Southmike set his that way, maybe it's all I needed. SAB, I may just wind up trying to sell the memory on ebay and buying one of the approved models if it comes to that.
Normally, I would research everything before I would start something like this. It's my first home-built machine, and I needed a project to work on. I'm recently widowed, and at the time, I needed something to do to distract my mind, so I built a computer. I'm not functioning at my best at the moment... it takes a long time to recover. So the motivation to do things like troubleshooting is only there occasionally. But I'm slowly getting myself together, so I'll eventually get this thing working, or get memory that does work.
    Thanks for the recommendations everyone!
