Anyone using a 4K monitor with FCP X?

Is anyone using FCP X on a 4K monitor? I'm thinking about getting a Dell 4K monitor as my main monitor but I'm a little worried the user interface support on 4K is weak. I think everything is going to look super tiny.
Has anyone already experienced this?
Thanks!

So I have my new Mac Pro set up. 8-Core, 32 gigs RAM, Dual 700 GPUs, 512 gig internal Flash drive.
I purchased the 27" Thunderbolt display as my main Final Cut Pro X screen and I have the Dell UP2414q 4K monitor plugged in as the Viewer display.
I have the Dell set to "Best for Display" and it works fine. I have some 4480 x 1920 RED footage and I have the FCP X Viewers on the Dell. The footage is set to 100% and it bleeds a little off the sides, as it should since the monitor is 3820 wide. It's at its native resolution.
The user interface elements of the second monitor are at normal size - the menu bar, the FCP X view options. Buying a 4K monitor and using Best for Display gives you the desktop the size of a typical 1080 monitor, but it all looks like a Retina display. It's very crisp.
So if you want a second monitor to hold a ton of Adobe palettes, and have a very large desktop, I'd recommend getting a Thunderbolt display, beause this display behaves like a 1080 monitor in that regard. If you want a 4K monitor specifically for color grading 4K footage at the native size so you can see all the artifacts and things you wouldn't see with the footage at 50%, this Dell monitor is fine and it's $890 on Amazon. It's not a professional color grader's monitor, obviously, but it does well for me.
I took some 4480 x 1920 RED footage that had a sky that was gray (the famous Mercedes in the mountains footage). I used the color picker color correction in FCP X and was able to select that sky very easily. I can see why the fat 4K footage is so great in regards to color grading. Because you don't have the massive color gradiation and artifacts you get in the more compressed media, when you use the color picker, it selects a very large, clean, section of the sky. I was able to quickly make the sky more saturated and blue and play it in real time (Better Performance) it's it's perfectly clean with no halos around the tree branches as they move into the foreground of the sky. Very nice!
Nice feature in FCP X is all the effects, transitions, etc., have a "4K-ready content only" button at the top so it only presents you with effects and transitions that work with 4K footage.
It took a lot of time calibrating this Dell monitor. It has the Adobe RGC color space built in but when I set it to that and set the OS X Display color option to Adobe RGB, it all had a very slight purple/pink huge. Very slight. Whites were not pure white like they are on the Thunderbolt and my blue sky had a tinge of pink to it.
I calibrated it with advanced options in the OS X Display preferences. I then connected my Samsung HD LED TV into the HDMI port of the Mac Pro and set it as my A/V display in FCP X. I was able to do the custom color setting on the Dell monitor itself and lower the saturation and RGB values. It took about 15 minutes to get it looking right. Now, I don't see the very slight purple/pink tink. My blue sky looks blue, etc., and it looks exactly how it will look on DVD and Blu-ray and projectors at film festivals.
The Samsung LED TV was a breeze to use. As soon as I plugged it into the HDMI port of the Mac Pro, the displays changed and OS X went to 1920 x 1080 60hz. The color was set to an HD color preset (I forget the number and I disconnected it). Arranging the multiple monitors is as you'd expect, just works.
BTW, I have 2 10 TB 5Big Lacie Thunderbolt 2 hard drives. They are about $1K each at 10 TBs. I have one for my footage and one as a backup with Time Machine. No formatting necessary - just plug them in and go. I plugged in the first one, told OS X no for Time Machine. Plugged in the second one, told Time Machine yes. Renamed the second drive "Backup". I turned off hard drive sleep becuase it's annoying. You hear it spin up, spin down, spin up, etc. as you work.
I used the AJA benchmark and this is what I got with 16 gig test file, 4K video simulation:
Write 740.3 MB/s
Read: 849.1 MB/s
Fast!
FCP X loads in 4 seconds on this system off the internal Flash drive.
Cheers!

  • Using an external monitor with FCP Studio v. 1.0

I cannot get my external monitor to display my timeline editing window. I have made the right connections, with firewire from Mac to Sony HDV tapedeck, and with HDMI cable from tapedeck to LCD monitor, but the screen remains blank. The external video setting and the video playback setting both have the HDV 1080i options greyed out, so I can't click on them. I can only have 'none', or playback in full screen desktop. How can I activate the play out via the tapedeck to the monitor?

However, if HDV cannot be played out of FCP via firewire, how come I can capture from tape and export back to tape with firewire successfully?
Part of the issue is the Open GOP nature of HDV. Basically, HDV spreads the information for all frames within the time that you've pressed record to the time that you've stopped recording, and then crunches that down. This is way different than other FireWire-supported codecs, like DV, where each frame contains all the information needed by FCP to send a signal out to an external monitor at full resolution.
Sending out a full resolution via FireWire during HDV editing - where, most importantly, you're not obeying the GOP structure - would require fairly intense system resources, since it must reference other frames (sometimes many other frames). That's why you need a dedicated accelerator, like a capture card, to do that and send out a signal. As mentioned, FCP can send out a (very degraded) letterboxed 4:3 signal via FireWire, but it can't send out a full resolution signal.
Capturing, however, is a data transfer and much easier on your system. Open GOP is also the reason that long captures get broken up into individual shots (every time you start/stop recording).
Finally, as Shane mentions, the conform that FCP does prior to Print to Video means that FCP converts your timeline to abide by the (Open GOP) structure of HDV. As you've witnessed, that takes a fair amount of time.

I contact Viewera support to ask if they had any information on whether this LCD is compatible with a first generation Mac Mini 1.42GHz computer. They said they only had information on users of Windows PC.
I really like this LCD but I don't want to go through the hassle of purchasing it only to have to ship it back.

  • How do I use two external monitors with my laptop?

I have a new Pavilion dm4-301 d cl Entertainment PC.   My OS is Windows 7.   I am used to using two external monitors with a docking station.   This new laptop does not have a docking station.  What do I need to get  to use two external monitors?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Certainly not without a dock but even with, HP laptop docks pretty well limit you to one of the external monitor ports, even if there are two on the dock. We have used a device called an Atlona AT-HDPIX2 which is a usb to hdmi adapter. It provides a third monitor capability for a laptop....use the native external monitor port and the internal laptop display and then this device gives a third monitor which is full configurable from the Windows 7 display interface...clone, extend, etc. It allows full HD resolution and is responsive enough for even light gaming.  HP makes no true docking station for your laptop.

  • I can't use my Philips monitor with Mac mini

I can't use my Philips monitor with Mac mini, I am using a HDMI to VGA cable to connect them. But no signal on my Philips monitor.
My Mac mini is in a good condition, it can connect with my HDTV, the BENQ monitor at my office, but I can't make it connect with my Philips monitor.
    I dun know what happen.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

The two are incompatible, HDMI is a digital signal and VGA is an analog signal. You need a monitor with a HDMI port or a DVI-I port, these are both digital signals. DVI-I gives the best output.

  • Has anyone used Aperture 2.0 with 8800GT?

Has anyone used Aperture 2.0 with the new 8800GT? I'm about to order a new Mac Pro and wonder if Aperture will get a speed boost with the 8800GT over the HD 2600XT. I've read many times that Aperture is very GPU dependent, but then I've also read, on Barefeats.com for example, that the graphics card really doesn't do that much of a difference after all.
For me, on my dual 2.0 G5 with 4.5GB and a X800XT, what's been most annoying with Aperture 1.5 has been the slow load times for raw images (15-20MB). But now with the quick preview mode in Aperture 2.0, that really isn't an issue any more.
Is the 8800GT worth waiting for, or should I just get the Mac Pro now with the HD 2600XT?

    Hi Don
I'm using Aperture 2.0 with the 8800GT. My system is the new MacPro 8 core 2.8GH with 10GB RAM. I'm shooting Nikon D3 lossless compressed RAW files. Approximately 12-14MB each.
I do not need to use the quick preview mode. Images open instantaneously, either fit to screen or 100%. All the image adjustments are shown with no time lag. My D2X uncompressed raw files,19MB, display in approximately one second with quick preview turned off.
I'm no MAC hardware expert so I don't know how much the speed is the result of the 8800GT but I'm just one happy camper.
    Hope this helps

Anyone using Brother HL-2170W with their Mac? I read some reviews at newegg and they are not bad , but at the apple store the reviews are not that good at all. Is this because it is not working well with Leopard as most printers don't or what?

Verizon informs me that Windows is only needed to download and install some form of authentication and that the free wi-fi hotspot service can be used from then on from the Macintosh side. Even though it's a Windows program, I'm assured that the authorized status will be detected when the Mac laptop is used under OS X

  • Using Digital Beta deck with FCP 4

Can one use a digibeta deck with FCP via a firewire? What should the settings be if I want to keep everything uncompressed? Space is not an issue. I ask since I've only used minidv and DVcam.
    thanks so much!

You need a capture card (Aurora, AJA, Decklink) and drives capable of uncompressed playback.
The only card that captures and sends the signal thru a firewire cable is the AJA I/O, but the Aurora and Decklink solutions are cheaper. Aurora being my favorite.

  • Has anyone used a MacBook Air with a TV as a monitor?

Wondering if anyone can advise on experience with using a tv as a monitor? I don't believe Mac make just a monitor for this purpose do they?

it's ok, highly pixelated, meaning you will see pixels. I would say its great to watch videos, but any reading or such will be displeasing. Really depends on the pixels per inch of your TV also. But, I would stick with nothing more than 27" for reading or anything text based.

  • Anyone using an nNovia HD with their cam & FCP?

I'm interested in the nNovia drives but wanted to check if anyone has experience using them successfully with FCP. I searched the FCP & FCE forums and there were a few references to Firestore drives but none on nNovia.
I film live events and often have issues with tape length, so I'd like to go tapeless. I'm aware of the 2GB file size limits on the nNovia & Firestore units & can put up with that if they otherwise perform well w/Final Cut.

Well, with miniDV the maximum is 60 mins per tape @ SP. When I've got a Shakespeare production with intermission at t=90+ mins I have a problem with tape length. I've been double-teaming 2 cameras to deal with the intervals where I have to swap tapes & it's a pain in the butt not to mention the occasional problems with having to feed audio to 2 cameras from my mixer. Tapeless would be a great solution.
The Firestore automatically breaks the DV feed every 2GB and begins a new file automatically, sequentially numbered w/o losing any frames. The nNovia must do the same but before I lay out my hard earned $ I wanted to check to see if anyone has experience with them.

  • Anyone tried using a QText file with FCP?

I was just wondering if there is some way to utilize a QText file for captioning with FCP, either directly of by importing it into QTPro, then exporting it in a form that FCP understands? The idea is to use these as timed text overlays.

QText is a bit more, at least to my limited understanding. Let's say you have a QText file with 10 lines of text you want to display. In the header you can specify color, size, etc. Before each line of text you enter a time code which represents the start time for displaying that line. For example:
    [00:00:00]
This is my first line and displays for 4 seconds
    [00:00:04]
This line is displayed 4 seconds after the first, and displays for 6 seconds
    [00:00:10]
and this line is 6 seconds after the one above (i.e. 10 seconds in).
and so on. One way to look at it, each line of text becomes a slide which displays until the next line is called.
When fed to QTime, you get a very nice vector graphics display of each line at the specified time. It would be great if I could export that as a video file which I then could use in an overlay track in FCP. QTPro offers several export options including such as MP4, m4v, etc. Dragging these files into FCP either generates a Codec error when rendered or isn't recognized at all. I guess I could use a video screen capture program and capture the QTP display, but that seems like a crude and slow process. I had hoped, since FCP and QTP are both Apple products they would have found some way to integrate them. No mention of QText in the FCP help file, so it would appear no such luck.

  • Two 24" LCD Monitors with FCP / Motion

I have a Mac Pro (early 2009) with the new ATI Radeon 4890 dual DVI video card and one Apple 24" LCD monitor. I'm using this setup for primarily FCP/Motion work. Question:
    - Can the ATI Radeon 4890 handle two 24" LCD monitors, or do I need to purchase a second video card?
    - Can FCP / Motion handle two video cards?
    Thanks!
    lance

Can the ATI Radeon 4890 handle two 24" LCD monitors
ABSOLUTELY. There are two monitor connections on the card. One DVI, the other the Apple connector.
Can FCP / Motion handle two video cards?
Yup. Most FCP workstations I have been on, and personally own, are two monitor setups. That is a fairly typical setup.
