Anyone using a Panasonic SD1 - 5.1 question

Hi
I have a Panasonic SD1 HD camcorder which records audio as 5.1 surround. However I can't seem to get FCPx to import the footage with 5.1 soundtrack. Has anyone managed to achieve this yet.
I did try using voltaic to encode a separate surround audio file but FCPx doesn't like the AC3 format it uses so I can't import that.
I recently moved from FCE4 which was only stereo so it has never been an issue previously ...
Thanks
Dave

This guy is using a MacBook Pro, not an iMac, but it gives you a good idea of about what you're going to see. I would assume that the iMac would be a little bit faster, considering it is a desktop as opposed to a laptop. Anyway, hopefully those will give you some insight. In general it seems to work very well considering he's comparing a powermac g5 dual core (a high end desktop) to the MacBook Pro (a high end laptop, but a laptop nonetheless). Hope this helps!

  • Anyone use the Panasonic DMC-ZS7 with iPhoto?

    I'm thinking of getting the Panasonic DMC-ZS7 camera, which has a built-in GPS. Out of the new compact cameras with built-in GPS, this seems to have the best built-in GPS support. Before I get it, I just want to confirm that the GPS data it writes to the EXIF header can be used by iPhoto correctly. I use iPhoto '09 (8.1.2).
    Has anyone used the ZS7 with iPhoto?

    I recently turned the GPS function on. I am unsure if GPS is the problem, but the spinning busy next to the "Places" menu item certainly points that direction.
    I would actually argue the opposite, that the spinning busy means that iPhoto can read the GPS data correctly. The fact that it is trying to determine places would indicate that it sees GPS data. More likely the spinning busy is due to something after getting the GPS data like trying to look up actual place info online to get names or downloading maps or something of that sort.

  • Has anyone used the Panasonic BT-LH2600WP monitor with Premiere CC and AJA T-TAP?

    I'm considering investing in the Panasonic 26" BT-LH2600WP to use as a color correct monitor with my 27" imac and a aja T-tap (thunderbolt to sdi adapter).  Has anyone done this or know if there are any quality issues?
    thanks
    Phil

    Phil, I have a similar set up, but I have the 17-inch Panasonic SDI monitor. Premier works okay with the T-Tap, with some minor yet annoying bugs.
    If I monitor audio via HDMI from the T-Tap, which I prefer, then my Panasonic monitor and its matching audio are about half a second out of sync with the iMac display. (But the HDMI audio is perfectly synced with the Panasonic SDI video.) This is annoying because both the Panasonic and the iMac are directly in front of me, and it's confusing seeing the out of sync iMac image. Definitely not something to show any clients.
    If I switch my audio monitoring to "Adobe Desktop Audio," which is the feed from the iMac's headphone jack, this problem disappears. In that case, the Panasonic and the iMac display are almost perfectly matched up. However, now I'm getting lower quality audio, with added digital-to-analog processing in the signal.
    Using the T-Tap is smooth and trouble free in Final Cut Pro X, but in Premier it is a bit buggy. That said, it works mostly okay.
    While we're on the subject, can anyone suggest the best Preferences settings in Premier to use the AJA T-Tap? I may be missing something.
    Thanks!

  • Anyone using Little Snitch to answer some questions....

    I just got LS and I understand what to do with apps., whether to allow them to connect to Word or Adobe.....
    But, with Safari, it has 3 different ports to allow TCP connections, is that correct and I should allow all?
    And, to a bank site for example, I get 6 or 7 boxes asking me if I should let it connect, each one is different, some with the bank name, others with verification sites, some with tracking but, I am not sure all are needed, much less to allow.
    Anyone? Thanks.

    Does anyone know if there's a way to change the questions themselves?  (Frankly, they have to be the most ridiculous security questions I've ever seen.  A good security question should be one that you'll have no problem remembering the answer to, even if you're asked years later.  To answer one from the third batch, I'd have to make something up, which makes it unlikely I'll remember the answer later.  And I certainly don't want to have to write the answers down somewhere.)

  • Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

    Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

    Are you actually having a problem with the new Lacie drive, or are you just asking is the Lacie drive somehow different from your old G-Drive?
    From a connection standpoint, most Lacie desktop drives have both USB and FireWire connections, just like the G-Drives do.  You would connect and use it the same as a G-Drive.
    Regarding capturing to the external HD, if you are using a camcorder that has FireWire (iLink) connection, it is not advisable to have an external FireWire HD connected to your Mac at the same time as your camcorder; there are often communication conflicts between the camcorder and the hard drive if they are connected at the same time.  The conflicts usually appear as either dropped frames or a complete freeze.   This is more common with Canon miniDV camcorders but I have also seen this behavior with Sony miniDV camcorders.  (The problem is the camcorder's FW implementation, not the hard drive.)  The workaround is to capture to your Mac's internal HD and later copy the captured video to your external HD.

  • A few questions before I buy Logic Pro (also anyone use M-Audio Ozone w/it?

    Hello. I just bought a mac (my first one). I plan on getting Logic Pro, but have a few questions.
    -Do I need an audio interface to use the program?
    -Does anyone use the M-Audio Ozone with Logic? If so, do you recommend it? I know USB isn't as fast as Firewire
    -If the Ozone isn't a good audio interface, which M-Audio interface do you recommend? (i might be using Protools M-Powered as well so that's why I want M-Audio)
    -Is there a plugin similar to McDSP Filterbank for Logic?
    I won't have too much hardware so I don't need too many ins/outs.
    Thanks

    Ok well do you have a piano? If you take courses you probably need a full piano unless you only want to do synths and pop music, the Ozone will not do. Do take this into consideration, 25 keys is very very small. The cheapest best piano IMHO is the Yamaha P60; piano playing needs weighted keys.
    The audio interface converts analog sound to digital and transfers it to the computer. The latency comes from the transport (firewire, usb, IDE), from the computer (software, operating system and drivers) and from the analog/digital conversion. The audio interface also does the reverse, it provides many outputs for speakers and headphones. It can also optionaly provide MIDI I/O.
    There are MIDI only input/outputs too, which allow you to plug in any MIDI device, such as a Yamaha P60 piano for instance.
    The controller is usually a piano like device (some aren't, they provide only buttons) that sends MIDI information to other MIDI devices (like Logic, via the computer's MIDI I/O). Synths can act as MIDI controllers but provide much more (such as the ability to generate sound).
    The Ozone is both, it displays itself as a MIDI controller through it's keyboard and 8 control knobs, as well as an audio interface with 2 inputs and 1 output. That's why it's good at what it does, it's cheap and compact and does all basic IO. But if you won't record anything, a normal MIDI controller is enough. But if you have monitors, maybe the output from the Mac isn't good enough. In terms of sonic quality the Ozone is okay.

  • Question for Anyone Using CS4 Production Premium with Windows 7

    I'm testing Windows 7 at home with CS3 Production Premium and have not had any issues. Of course CS4 is quite a bit different.
    Anyone using CS4 Production Premium on Windows 7 regularly? Any issues to report?
    Thanks

    Thanks for replying to my post:

    On our systems at work that have XP and Vista + CS4 Production Premium.  I've noticed this with preview files in particular and possibly some others, I don't remember. The "show only exact file" checkbox is greyed out. This is somewhat annoying because projects can have a huge number of preview files with long  cryptic names making it a pain to locate the correct one manually to get the ball rolling. If I don't think it'll take too long to re-render, I just select "skip preview files".
    We bought 3 licenses for Windows 7 and I'm encouraged by the performance, reliability and features on my home test system (RC 64) that has CS3 installed. Can't wait to get rid of XP and Vista.

  • Has anyone used JAAS with WebLogic?

    Has anyone used JAAS with Weblogic? I was looking at their example, and I have a bunch of questions about it. Here goes:
    Basically the problem is this: the plug-in LoginModule model of JAAS used in WebLogic (with EJB Servers) seems to allow clients to falsely authenticate.
    Let me give you a little background on what brought me to this. You can find the WebLogic JAAS example (to which I refer below) in the pdf: http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs61/pdf/security.pdf . (I believe you want pages 64-74) WebLogic, I believe goes about this all wrong. They allow the client to use their own LoginModules, as well as CallBackHandlers. This is dangerous, as it allows them to get a reference (in the module) to the LoginContext's Subject and authenticate themselves (i.e. associate a Principal with the subject). As we know from JAAS, the way AccessController checks permissions is by looking at the Principal in the Subject and seeing if that Principal is granted the permission in the "policy" file (or by checking with the Policy class). What it does NOT do, is see if that Subject
    has the right to hold that Principal. Rather, it assumes the Subject is authenticated.
    So a user who is allowed to use their own Module (as WebLogic's example shows) could do something like:
    //THEIR LOGIN MODULE (SOME CODE CUT-OUT FOR BREVITY)
    public class BasicModule implements LoginModule
    private NameCallback strName;
    private PasswordCallback strPass;
    private CallbackHandler myCB;
    private Subject subj;
             //INITIALIZE THIS MODULE
               public void initialize(Subject subject, CallbackHandler callbackHandler, Map sharedState, Map options)
                      try
                           //SET SUBJECT
                             subj = subject;  //NOTE: THIS GIVES YOU REFERENCE
    TO LOGIN CONTEXT'S SUBJECT
                                                     // AND ALLOWS YOU TO PASS
    IT BACK TO THE LOGIN CONTEXT
                           //SET CALLBACKHANDLERS
                             strName = new NameCallback("Your Name: ");
                             strPass = new PasswordCallback("Password:", false);
                             Callback[] cb = { strName, strPass };
                           //HANDLE THE CALLBACKS
                             callbackHandler.handle(cb);
                      } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println(e); }
         //LOG THE USER IN
           public boolean login() throws LoginException
              //TEST TO SEE IF SUBJECT HOLDS ANYTHING YET
              System.out.println( "PRIOR TO AUTHENTICATION, SUBJECT HOLDS: " +
    subj.getPrincipals().size() + " Principals");
              //SUBJECT AUTHENTICATED - BECAUSE SUBJECT NOW HOLDS THE PRINCIPAL
               MyPrincipal m = new MyPrincipal("Admin");
               subj.getPrincipals().add(m);
               return true;
             public boolean commit() throws LoginException
                   return true;
        }(Sorry for all that code)
    I tested the above code, and it fully associates the Subject (and its principal) with the LoginContext. So my question is, where in the process (and code) can we put the LoginContext and Modules so that a client cannot
    do this? With the above example, there is no Security. (a call to: myLoginContext.getSubject().doAs(...) will work)
    I think the key here is to understand JAAS's plug-in security model to mean:
    (Below are my words)
    The point of JAAS is to allow an application to use different ways of authenticating without changing the application's code, but NOT to allow the user to authenticate however they want.
    In WebLogic's example, they unfortunately seem to have used the latter understanding, i.e. "allow the user to authenticate however they want."
    That, as I think I've shown, is not security. So how do we solve this? We need to put JAAS on the server side (with no direct JAAS client-side), and that includes the LoginModules as well as LoginContext. So for an EJB Server this means that the same internal permission
    checking code can be used regardless of whether a client connects through
    RMI/RMI-IIOP/JEREMIE (etc). It does NOT mean that the client gets to choose
    how they authenticate (except by choosing YOUR set ways).
    Before we even deal with a serialized subject, we need to see how JAAS can
    even be used on the back-end of an RMI (RMI-IIOP/JEREMIE) application.
    I think what needs to be done, is the client needs to have the stubs for our
    LoginModule, LoginContext, CallBackHandler, CallBacks. Then they can put
    their info into those, and everything is handled server-side. So they may
    not even need to send a Subject across anyways (but they may want to as
    well).
    Please let me know if anyone sees this problem too, or if I am just completely
    off track with this one. I think figuring out how to do JAAS as though
    everything were local, and then putting RMI (or whatever) on top is the
    first thing to tackle.

    I would like to embed interactive widgets in iBooks using iBookAuthor. The widgets in question started life in Java but GWT has allowed them to be converted to javascript and to run on web pages (for example, http://softoption.us/content/node/437 scroll to the bottom). In theory, iBookAuthor can bring in most html5, and much javascript. The technique is to wrap the html in a folder, with 2 extra files, a plist and a default png and then change the extension of the folder to ‘.wdgt’. This is the technique for making Dashboard widgets for the Mac, and Apple even have the Dashcode software to do it. So what you really do is to make a Dashboard widget, then iBookAuthor can import it.  So far, so good. And some  folk have been doing this, for example http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/2/prweb9242432.htm http://www.panophoto.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=10417&p=158330#p158423 However, if you start with GWT and create a single page with one button and a Hello World, compile it, and get the WAR file (I use Eclipse here)… the Safari browser and others will run it properly (even on an iPad). Then if you wrap it, a proper Dashboard widget is created, which runs properly on a Mac. Then if you go to iBookAuthor and put a custom widget in the Text, then drag it in. It is accepted by the text and shown as being there. However, if you use Preview to look at it on an iPad, it is gone (or was never there in the first place). Anyone any ideas on this? [And iBook Author seems to give no warnings.] The widget is at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/46713473/Test6.wdgt.zip I have bells and whistles that I’d like to get into an iBook!
    Thanks for any insights.
    Martin

    I do have a little to add, which might help someone. Indeed, opening a blank page and dragging the widget straight in seems good in difficult cases. But, actually, I was also able to insert successfully from the Toolbar especially to blank pages. So, it may have been something to do with the columns and stuff like that. Anyway back then the insertion would show in iBooks Author but not in the Preview on the iPad. I moved on to actual Google Web Toolkit output javascript. Basically I had three at hand to try: a Hello World with a button which went straight it, one of moderate complexity, (for example with a built in Lisp interpreter), which also went straight in, and finally a more complex one that initially was rejected by iBook Author. Author complained that there was an unsupported media file (of course, Author does not tell you which one it is, that would be too easy). [Remember, this was a proper working Dashboard widget which could be installed on a Mac]. Among other things I had read remarks about .gif files. When looking through the GWT war directory at the actual javascript etc files, I noticed there were two gifs there one called ‘clear.cache.gif ‘  and a second one called  ‘0F89659FF3F324AE4116F700257E32BD.cache.gif’. (Now, there is obfuscation so the numbers here may be different from case to case.) The clear.cache.gif did not seem to be anything special. But the other one is an animation. It is three little boxes that twinkle (rather like a waiting spinning cursor).  So, I opened that file and saved it to itself (that picks the top frame of the animation and saves only that, leaving you with an unanimated gif). The resulting widget drags and drops into iBooks Author (and seems to work properly at a quick glance). So, if you are having trouble with ‘unsupported media files’ converting animated gifs into unanimated gifs might help in some cases.

(for 1st time purchase)  I know the questions are not what I chose because I wrote the questions & answers down when setting up the ipod. Any ideas??!!!

    Reset Security Questions
    Frequently asked questions about Apple ID
    Manage My Apple ID
    Or you can email iTunes Support at iTunes Store Support.
    If all else fails:
      1. Go to: Apple Express Lane;
      2. Under Product Categories choose iTunes;
      3. Then choose iTunes Store;
      4. Then choose Account Management;
      5. Now choose iTunes Store Security and answer the bullet questions, then click
          Continue;
      6. Sign in with your Apple ID and press Continue;
      7. Under Contact Options fill out the information and advise iTunes that you would
          like your security/challenge questions reset;
      8. Click Send/Continue.
    You should get a response within 24 hours by email.
    In the event you are unsuccessful then contact AppleCare - Contacting Apple for support and service.
    Another user had success doing the following:
    I got some help from an apple assistant on the phone. It is kind of round about way to get in.
    Here is what he said to do and it is working for me...
      a. on the device that is asking you for the security questions go to "settings", > "store" >
          tap the Apple ID and choose view"Apple ID" and sign in.
      b. Tap on payment information and add a credit/debit card of your preference then select
          "done", in the upper right corner
      c. sign out and back into iTunes on the device by going to "settings"> "store" > tap the
          Apple ID and choose "sign-out" > Tap "sign -in" > "use existing Apple ID" and you
          should be asked to verify your security code for the credit /debit card and NOT the
          security questions.
      d. At this time you can remove the card by going back in to edit the payment info and
          selecting "none" as the card type then saving the changes by selecting "done". You
          should now be able to use your iTunes store credit without answering the security
          questions.
    It's working for me ...I just have to put in my 3 digit security pin from the credit card I am using.
    Good Luck friends!

    Greetings -- I have the Panasonic SD1. Import works fine on iMovie '08 (well, except for the audio being shifted right, but from other posts I have determined this is Apple's poor 5.1 audio support).
    I just purchased FCE 4.0 and I cannot "log and capture" from the camera. To be fair, I haven't plugged the camera directly into the computer as I stopped doing this a while back. Instead, I have an SD card reader I use that mounts the drive in the same fashion as if the camera was directly connected and it has worked for iPhoto (for stills) and iMovie in the past.
    I am able to pull up the "Log & Capture" dialog and can even preview the clips -- that seems to work just fine. However, if I try to import a movie (either by dragging to the queue, or double clicking, or using the contextual menu) it freezes and then very quickly crashes.
    Has anybody run into this? Any ideas?
    Cheers mates,
    George

  • What kind of throughput should I expect? Anyone using AQ in high volume?

    Hi,
    I am working with AQ in a 10.2 environment and have been doing some testing with AQ. What I have is a very simple Queue with 1 queue table. The queue table structure is:
    id number
    message varchar(256)
    message_date date
    I have not done anything special with storage paramteres, etc so it's all defalt at this point. The I created a stored procedure that will generate messages given message text and number of times to loop. When I run this procedure with 10,000 iterations it runs in 15 seconds (if I commit all messages at the end) and 24 seconds if I commit after each message (probabliy more realistic).
    Now, on the same database I have a straight table that contains one column (message varchar(256)). I have also created a similiar storage procedure to insert into it. For this, 10,000 inserts takes about 1 second.
    As you can see there is an order of magnitude of difference so I am looking to see if others have been able to achieve higher throughput than 500-700 messages per second and if so what was done to achieve it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill

    Yes, I have seen it. My testing so far hasn't even gotten to the point of concurrent enqueue/dequeue. So far I have focused on enqueue time and it is dramatically slower than a plain old database table. That link also discussed mutliple indexed organized tables being created behind the scenes. I'm guessing that the 15X factor I am seeing is because of 4 underlying tables, plus they are indexed organized which adds additional overhead.
    So my question remains - Is anyone using AQ for high volume processing? I suppose I could create a bunch of queues. However, that will create additional management on my side which is what I was trying to avoid by using AQ in the first place.
    Can one queue be served by multiple queue tables? Can queue tables be partitioned? I would like to minimize the number of queue so that the dequeue processes don't have to contain multiplexed logic.
    Thanks

  • Anyone using a HDMI to component cable?

    Using an Apple TV 2
    My TV doesn't have HDMI - I see cables for sale, but not at the Apple store. Anyone use one so I know it will work?
    Thanks

    Can anyone answer the original question - Are you doing this?
    Yes, using the "converter" option. Or rather I can do this and have for test purposes but now have enough HDMI HDTVs in the home to not be forced to do this if I choose not to do so.
    Have you tried and it didn't work?
    As indicated above I tried it. Normally, the only time the converter I have won't currently work is if the target TV does not support 720p input. No one has yet mentioned the fact that unless you purchase a "broadcast level" device, these converters do not include any scaling capabilities. If your particular TV only supports 1080i component input, then even the converter will will not work because the component output is still at 720p as output by the TV2.
    DId it work?
    Once again, it did.

  • Has anyone actually received an answer to a question?

    I posted a question two weeks ago, about flash player just going to a black screen when maximized to full screen and NEVER received an reply.  Has anyone actually gotten an answer to any question by this method?
    To ADOBE:  I'm sure this is a waste of time, since I doubt anyone from Adobe actually reads these things, but I need to vent.  This is the crappiest customer service I have ever experienced.  Instead of actually having someone at your company respond to e-mail questions you put the burden of solving YOUR PROBLEM to your other customers.  This is a disgusting habit and if there is another option out there other than flashplayer, I'm going to find it, use it and start recommending it to everyone I know.  Your company is crap.

    Problem I have is the swatch doesn't come along for the ride.
    Illustrator makes a gradient from color to clear that can go on top of a raster image and print fine on any output device we've ever owned. InDesign has the gradient feather option which is similar but requires for the two major output devices we have us to either create a TIFF or RIP the item through a prepress system (RAMPage Harlequin RIP, GMG Color Proof's Adobe PDF Print Engine) and send a flattened file. Either way it is Flattened Filesville if you are using InDesign, not if you are using Illustrator.
    If you paste just the swatch and not a group you get this:
    It's been a gripe of mine with InDesign for years (I know there is a feature request form) and the only solution I know of is to flatten files. I've had several workflow vendors promise a good solution and all of them boil down to sending the file through Product X and spitting out a normalized (flat as a pancake) file to the output device's RIP and turning all their color management tricks off on the output device. I know I can do this, but I don't want to have to RIP every single job that is a one off single – twenties quantity poster through a RIP the same way I do an offset job. It just makes me feel like the textbook Bob Levine adage of "your printer is stuck in 1995" kind of scenario. We aren't talking hokey cheapo output devices too. I'm talking first birthday over two hundred kilobuck output devices.
