Anyone using an iMac for Photoshop?

If so, what are you using as a scratch disk?
The reason I ask is that I hear a lot of photographers are now using iMacs to do their image editing in Photoshop. The new iMacs are almost as fast as the old-design Mac Pro's and a lot less expensive than the upcoming "black trash can" Mac Pro.
But knowing that in order to run decent, Photoshop requires a scratch disk on a separate HDD or SDD than the application drive, I hesitate to buy a new iMac. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am just wondering about the status of the scratch disk for an iMac -- being on an external drive vs. an internal. In your case the 32Gb RAM, graphics and external T-bolt combines well to get the job done.
I have had minimal response over at Adobe forum so far. They tend to be rather Windows-centric there, having done away with the Mac Photoshop forum. Thanks.
I've always made it a point to purchase the top of the line graphics card when I've purchased an iMac.  It is the one thing that is involved in giving maximum performance to Photoshop and other video related apps that cannot be updated later.
I've found that with the 3TB Fusion drive I really don't need to use a secondary drive for the cache.  I currently set the cache to the internal hard drive and I keep all of my photos on the external T-bolt drive and it seems to run very smoothly but I didn't notice a slowdown when the cache and photos were on two different external T-bolt drives.

  • Using an iMac for Photoshop editing

Hi. I'm a photographer and have been using a 17" MacBook Pro for the last 5 years and doing all my Photoshop editing on it. The MacBook has served me well but has developed a hardware issue and requires a new logic board. Rather than sink $500 or so into the repair I am considering spending a little more and upgrading to a slightly newer used 21.5" iMac. It's a mid 2010 model. Are there any Photoshop users out there that have been using iMacs and are happy (or unhappy) w/ the performance of their machines in regard to image editing? I'm particularly concerned about image quality as displayed on the iMac screen. Thanks for any feedback anyone cares to offer.
Here are some of the specs on the iMac I'm considering:
    Dual core 3.06 GHz processor
    8 GB Ram
    500 GB 7200 RPM HD
    256 MB VRAM

I use PS CS3 on a 2009, 27 inch iMac with the same CPU and GPU specs and I am not having any issues.
I have a 1 TB HD installed, though.
If you purchase this iMac, I would increase the RAM to the max. 16 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Photoshop likes fast CPU, lots of RAM and lots of hard drive space for scratch disk areas.
The GPU while not that impressive, but serviceable for 3D and video work, will be more than fine for 2D Photoshop work.

How are the .7z files used and installed for photoshop elements and premier elements?

    Hi,
You can try to extract them to a folder and then try to install using the setup file.
Or you can try to download the .exe file ( Small File ) for the software you have and then run the .exe file and it will start the installation. Both .exe and .7z file for the application should be in same location.
    Download Photoshop Elements products | 9, 8, 7
    Download Photoshop Elements products | 11, 10
    Download Premiere Elements products | 11, 10
Download Premiere Elements products | 9
*** You can either download the .exe file from the above download links or you can also download both .exe (File 2 of 2) and .7z (File 1 of 2) from the above links.

We were Select customers for a year and have switched to Rose. Select was
both a buggy tool and a buggier company! Their upgrade to V6 completely
changed the server requirements, pulling the rug out from under our feet.
Features we were promised were not in the releases we were sent...
Rose has been a godsend; the product has it's shortcomings but it is a level
above Select in both functionality & robustness.
The 3 times I've had to contact Rational tech support, they've been able to
provide me with a solution. Select's tech support were unable to get their own

  • Anyone used another iMac as a second display?

I was thinking about getting another display for some more realistate while i'm editing and was trying to make it as asthetically pleasing as possible when this idea struck me. Why not find a broken or abandoned iMac out there and use it as a second display. Doesn't have to have anything in it except the display i just think it would look really nice having them side by side. Has anyone seen or done this? Any idea what the ouput from the monitor to the motherboard is? Anyone have an iMac to donate to my cause?

If you had a working iMac, you can use this clever app to make it into your second display over a network connection and VNC.
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html
I was thinking the iMac G4, with its infinitely adjustable swing arm would make a great second display. You can probably get one of those (working) in the 17-inch size for less than $300.
I use Screen Recycler to give my iMac a third display (on an old PC laptop running Ubuntu Linux).

"Mac OS X, Tiger Edition" by David Pogue (2005) briefly discusses the issue I raised on page 649ff. Under "The Software Base Station Effect," he says that a Mac with an AirPort card and an Ethernet or other connection to the internet (e.g. via DSL or cable modem) can serve as a "gateway" for other 802.11g equipped machines.
I've ordered a D-Link DWL-G650 802.11g Wireless Cardbus Adapter to install in the Dell laptop, and will see how it goes.

  • Use my iMac for as macbook screen?

I recently purchased a hendge dock for my macbook (early 2010) in order to save desk space, but I would like to use my iMac 27" as a screen in certain instance.  What are my options in order to make this a reality? Thank you.

If the iMac is a 2009 or 2010 model yes you can do this otherwise, nope! The feature is called Target Display Mode, Apple explains it in Target Display Mode 2009 & 2010 iMacs

  • Does anyone use Framwork POs for WBS and Asset management.

We have had issues before with trying to use Framework POs for Assets.  I wanted to know, does anyone out there use the Framework PO for the creation of Assets with charges going to WBS elements?  Do you track service charges as well as material charges that are purchsed for Assets?

For PO, WBS, Asset frame work below is the sample
    Create WBS which manage AUC
Example you will create a clinic,
    Create Project - [Project Clinic]
Create WBS under the Project Clinic - [Clinic Expense]
Create AUC under WBS Clinic Expense - [Clinic under Construction]
Let say you purchase Paint for the clinic - create a PO and use account assignment WBS [Clinic Expense] (e.g. 1000 USD)
Let say you purchase Wood for the clinic - create a PO and use account assignment WBS [Clinic Expense] (e.g. 2000 USD)
During month end you can settle the amount to AUC (tcocde CJ88 - Settlement type - Automatic)
All charges to WBS will go to AUC
Once construction of clinic is finished and is ready to use, you need to settle all the amount from WBS to AUC (through settlement)
Then create Fixed Asset [Clinic Building]
Then settele the AUC [Clinic under Construction] charges to Fixed Asset [Clinic Building] through CJ88 settlement type - Final settlement
    Thanks!

  • How many RAM do I need to use 3D rendering for Photoshop CC?

    Hello;
I just download a trail version of Adobe Photoshop CC and plainning to use Photoshop for all of my 3D works. My systems specs is AMD FX 6100 on the CPU side, NVida GeForce GTX 560 Ti, 8 gig of DDR3 1333 Mhz RAM and WD Black 1 TB and Window 8 64-bit.
when I use photoshop cc to render 3D text, I see that it use more of CPU power and the RAM don't even move.
i check these status using Logitech G510 gaming keyboard LED screen.
I understead 8 gig is more enough for gaming but for intensive task like 3D rendering, I heard that I need 12 gig or 16 gig. My motherboard support up to 32 gb but that will cuase more and thinking of upgrade to 16 gig of RAM. my motherboard only support 1333 mhz and I don't want to upgrade my motherboard.
    thank in advance.

    This might help you:
In addition, all subsequent Photoshop feature updates specifically for Creative Cloud members will also require 512 MB of vRAM in order to use the 3D features found in Photoshop CS6 Extended.
Please note: The system requirements for Photoshop CS6 Extended have always indicated that you need 512 MB of vRAM, but this wasn’t a hard enforcement.
Users who do not have 512 MB of vRAM will see the following dialog if they try to access a 3D feature in future Photoshop updates for Creative Cloud:
We hope that by providing this information early it will help you understand our current decisions around operating system support and where we we’re headed with future releases of Photoshop. We encourage all customers who are currently using the 3D features in Photoshop CS6 Extended to begin upgrading their video card/hardware now so they can fully take advantage of future Photoshop innovations as soon as they are available.

  • Using iBook 12" for PhotoShop CS2? Durability compared to PowerBook?

I'm thinking about getting a new Mac. I would really like an iMac 20", but that may be too much to spend right now.
I'm thinking an iBook would give me portability, as well as being able to connect to a monitor and keyboard while at home. I suppose it is like a Mac Mini, but with a built in monitor and keyboard.
    My questions are:
    1. How well will the 12" iBook run PhotoShop CS2, with 1.5GB of RAM? (Is the PowerBook 15" much faster?)
    2. Is the iBook more durable than the PowerBooks? I prefer the look of the PowerBook, since the iBook looks like a student laptop, but if it's more durable, I guess I can live with that.
    3. Is the 4500 RPM hard drive a big drawback compared to the 5400 RPM drives in the PowerBooks?
I will mainly be using Adobe CS2, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft Office.
    Thanks for any help,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
I have a 12" iBook G4 with 1.5gb of ram and I run the adobe creative suite just fine. The ram is definately going to help you in terms of running multiple CS applications at once.
As far as the hard drive is concerned...of course a 4200rpm drive is going to be slower than a 5400. But I dont consider it to be too much of a drawback. Most of my work in CS is done with an external firewire drive spinning at 7200 anyway.
As far as durability goes, i cannot comment on a powerbook as I have never owned one. I keep my iBook in an incase iBook sleve, its with me all the time and so far has been well protected. However, Powerbook or iBook...if you drop it..its going to get damaged in some way.
    Good luck with your decision.

  • Using the iMac for display only?

I bought an iMac in 2008. I use it for the majority of my computing needs, and for the most part is serves my purposes for everything. One thing I would like though is more gaming power.
I have a PC tower that is not connected to anything at the moment and needs a little hardware work which I will do myself.
Since the iMac is not user upgradable, and the video/graphics card is not upgradable at all, I was curious if I was able to connect the PC tower to the iMac's screen and use it as a display for a gaming computer and disconnect the tower for regular computing.
While I'm asking, is there any external way to improve the graphics card for gaming that anyone is aware of?

...Its too bad the graphics card is not upgradeable. I'm also going to try and find out if there is some sort of external way to increase performance....
This is the inherent issue with all "all-in-ones", both laptops and desktops, both PCs and Macs. For the most part, they are not upgradable. You can replace HD and RAM, but pretty much everything else "is what it is" and upgrades are "external only." Don't hold your breath that you'll find any way to increase performance (video or CPU.)
In the long run, you may want to consider just selling the iMac and get a new Mac. A Mini or Mac Pro, both of which do not have built-in monitors so would require you to get a monitor anyway, then you could KVM it with the PC. (I have my Mini KVMed with a Dell Poweredge server, which is sitting under my desk.) Alternatively, the new 27" iMac does allow for video input so it could be used as a monitor for the PC.

  • Use Relative Path for Photoshop Action?

I have a Photoshop Action that is programmed to open an existing file located in a specific directory.  The path to this directory is an absolute path, i.e.:
    C:\Program Files\Photoshop Actions\filename.jpg
As long as the Action can find the file in the specified absolute path, everything works fine.
My problem is that if someone tries to run this Action on a different computer (like a Mac), the path specified in the action does not exist and the Action will not work.
The simple solution to this would be to make the action open the file located at a relative path.  This way no matter what computer the action is run on, it will always be able to find the file.
Unfortunately, I don't think Photoshop Actions allow relative paths.  Does anyone know if using a relative path in an action is possible?
Failing this, how would I use a Photoshop Script to somehow direct the Action to find the correct location of the file?  Or is there a better solution?

The idea that I use in the xtools installer and else where is this:
    1) Convert the action file to XML.
    2) Package the XML file and the apps/ActionFileFromXML script with your stuff.
    3) An installer script will do a 'replace' (or whatever) on the XML file so that the paths are converted to whatever is needed.
    4) The new XML is saved and then converted to a .atn file which is then loaded.
There is an xtools forum at ps-scripts.com that may have some info in addition to the PDF file that comes with the package.
