Anyone using an SSD under Arch? Please post a quick benchmark

I'm considering an SSD for my Linux root and /home.  If you're using an SSD under Arch, can you please run a quick benchmark for me and post the results in this thread?  You can use hdparm to do a quick read test.  Here is an example using my HDD.
# hdparm -Tt /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 14500 MB in 2.00 seconds = 7258.88 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 368 MB in 3.01 seconds = 122.16 MB/sec
Beyond that, have you noticed any substantial speed ups over an HDD, like launching programs, booting the system, etc.

Perhaps use of IDE-MODE flash devices will provide best answers with the hdparm measure.  It does a sequential test which is hardly normal for operating systems.
Usual performance from ide mode flash devices is 45mb/sec but in practice may be a bit less in hdparm.  Two ide mode flash drives in raid0 give me less than 90 mb/s.  My use is for quick access storage, mostly read-only.  When first installed, 90 mb is possible but within a few weeks, it lessens to the mid 80"s even with read-only.
The performance over time lessens if the units are used as SSD and such is normal wear and tear.  Many articles cover the subject and the methods used to minimize the effects.
Much is going forward with SSD and expectation is that in a few years they will be in wide use.  This remains to be seen!
You may be aware of all so excuse my oops!

Since the price is dropping, I'm wondering if running 2 of these in a RAID0 will amount to anything real that would justify the effort.  An Archers running an array in a RAID0 and care to post a quick benchmark?  Procedure is on the wiki.

You can have include many <jsp:useBean> tags. Use different id/scope combinations.
    e.g.

  • Anyone using an SSD? did you align partitions to erase blocks?

I'm waiting on the 2nd gen Intel SSDs to copy my / and /home to the faster I/O device.  In the meantime, I'm reading up on these things and have found numerous sources that suggest aligning partitions on SSD's to the erase block of the device.  I found two major sources detailing the process.  This one shows a setup using parted and explains the process.
I'm just posting to solicit feedback from the community on this issue.  Does Aloisio have it right in that blog post?

Thanks for the link... most of that went over my head though. I'm not too sure about the whole boot 'tricky offset' as you described it though
My partition scheme for the 80 gig ssd will be pretty simplistic:
20 gigs of NTFS as partition #1
    15 gigs of ext4 as partition #2
    200 meg of ext3 for /boot as partition #3
rest of the drive for /home as partition #4
I'll keep /var and /data partitions on my HDD.
Glad to hear more comments about this so I can do it right the first time

  • Anyone using office 2004 for mac, please help!

    Dear all,
i know this is probably the wrong place for this post, but i've always been able to find my answers here..so genuine apologies in advance
i bought office 2004 for my macbook a few months back..i'm able to open word, excel etc no problems...but when i am typing in word on a regular document..my spellcheck does not work..even where there is obvious spelling problems,it does not highlight it with a red line underneath...when i run a spell chenck,it tells me its complete and the spelling and grammer are complete, when they are obviously not!!
in the compatibilty report it tells me that that word cannot identify text language...when i select language dialog box and english (uk)nothing changes
I've also just realised that when i type in a word notebook document, spell check works!?!??!
Anyone any ideas,i have a dissertation due for college in a few days and i need it to work!!!
again apologies if this is out of order posting here,
    regards,
    Paul

how do i uninstall office completely???
Before you do an uninstall you may want to test your preference files for corruption. There are three which can become corrupeted, but probably only the first two will be of issue.
Quit Word and any other Office Applciations.
Browse to your User home account and locate the following files:
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Office.prefs.plist
(the third has to do with fonts and I don't think that is at issue)
Drag these to your desktop and relaunch Word. Word will re-create these files.
If all works as it should you can trash these files. You will probably have to reset some preferences and Autocorrect settings. Be careful of what you reset as that may have been the cause of the issue.
If this does not work you may replace the newly created files with the ones you dragged to the desktop, or you may try re-installing Office.
If you want to completely remove Office and attempt a re-install to see if it corrects the problem: The uninstaller is located in HD/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools/Remove Office.
I understand that you are in a timecrunch with your paper being due. I am sure with enough troubleshooting that you can and will find a solution to the Office problem. If the above steps do not work, however, you may also want to have a look at the free NeoOffice suite to get your paper done in the meantime.

I am not including the link as a means of trying to pawn off the problem as I think any problem is ultimately fixable, but it may give you an option to meeting your deadline.

  • Anyone useing an SSD Drive in a Mac Pro? Should it be Sata? or pci..can it be bootable?

    The Title says it all!
But to recap, I would like an SSD boot drive for my 3,1 power Mac.....I can get SSD drives in PCE or SATA configuration, which would work better?
    Thanks for any info
    Jim

EIDE or PATA hasn't been used and of course is way too slow.
SSDs today are "too fast" for the SATA II we have so you don't need SATA 3, SATA II is still hitting the wall with an SSD.
You do know that yours should get 250MB/sec but being small you need to cut down on what you store on your boot drive and use other drives for meda and data.
SATA 3 SSDs can deliver up to 500MB/sec which again is getting close to the max bandwidth of 700MB/sec that the controller chip used in the Mac Pro is capable of, which is shared by all 4 drive bays.
Many users stick the SSD in the lower optical drive bay. Very convenient. I can't remember if you have an SATA optical drive though or they still used EIDE.

  • Anyone Using An SSD Drive for Audio Yet?

Been thinking about one of these for my record drive, since a very small one would work for me (as I'm only working on a few songs at any given moment and have plenty of other space to store things). It's between this and getting a V Raptor drive but I love the idea of no moving parts...
    Any input appreciated..
    TH

For audio recording, the concern is that SSDs have a lower number of write cycles than traditional hard drives. It's hard to know with such a new category of product, but they may fail faster in a situation where they are being written over and over very often.
This is a much bigger issue for system disks than for audio recording. Audio deals with relatively large files, and once they're written, they generally stay there until the project is dumped off-disk.
The system, on the other hand, constantly reads/writes/re-writes tiny blocks of data all over the place - which is also why random read/write rates are EVERYTHING in performance, and sequential read/write speeds, while certainly impressive, are pretty much irrelevant in actual use.
Also, all SSDs use a kind of "load balancing" to make sure that writes are evenly distributed across the entire memory, resulting in lifespans far beyond anything you'd reasonably expect off a mechanical hard drive.

  • Anyone using sata_promise w/ SATA drives, please help.

A recently submitted a kernel patch to ensure that PATA ports are detected on Promise FastTrak controllers with both PATA and SATA ports. I have no way of testing SATA drives with this patch. Could someone using one of these controllers with SATA drives please patch a kernel and see if everything is still good?
    Bug Report #4770

I'm using sata_promise with a SATA HD. Unfortunately, since Linux 2.6.17 it doesn't want to boot anymore (kernel oops on startup). For now I am using  2.6.15-archck which I still had lying around fortunately, though 2.6.16 also worked for me.
Do you by any chance know about this problem? According to linux changes, this has happened to the promise driver:
    * Add support for the Promise Fasttrak TX4300/TX4310 4-port PCI SATA controllers based on the PDC40719 chip to sata_promise driver (commit)
But that was actually a very minor patch, I guess some other promise/sata related change broke it.

  • Anyone using an HP LaserJet Pro CP1525nw printer with SL?

I'm thinking of getting this printer. Can anyone using this with Snow Leopard please let me know how well it works? Any issues? Nice printer? I will be replacing a Samsung CLP-315 which prints very nicely, but doesn't work well after updating from Tiger to SL.
    Thanks

It works just fine.  I picked up a 1525 yesterday, configured it using Lion, and I just now configured my wife's SL laptop to work with it.  No problems.  Just don't install the HP disk and let OS-X grab drivers for it and you should be fine.
It's a little tricky configuring with Lion for wireless printing, but it's doable.  See my post at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3449512 for a checklist.

  • Is somebody developing in Action Script under Arch?

    Hi!
Not sure it's the right place to post this, but at work I had all the pain in the world to set up an Action Script development under Debian (that's the distro I am using at work) and finally had to work under Windows. There was no free IDE and it was impossible at least for me to install a debug version of flash.
Now I am finding the possibilities of Action Script interesting, and would like to use it for some personal projects at home (where I run Arch). I am curious to know if someone else is using Action Script under Arch, and in which case, what are their setups and if they had any problem to install everything they need.
    Thanks!

I used to code in ActionSrcipt.
I never had any real problems with it and I have workded for over 15 years in Linux only OSes.
I always used my prefered editor ( at the time it was vim I  think ) and then did all my testing in the browser by running the flash movie.
The question you have to ask yourself is: Is it really worth for me to spend time with it?
ActionScript is tyied to Flash ... and Flash is in it's "way out". Sure it will not disappear tomorrow but it's just a matter of time. Heck even Adobe acknolledge that...
To me, if you just like coding ActionScript, then go to JavaScript. AS is just JS with adaptations to the movie playing engine of Flash.
    Hope this helps.

  • Dd, gzip using split under Arch and FreeBSD ?

    Hello Archers,
Not sure where to post this question so I'll try here.  Would anyone know the FACTS why the command below runs super fast under Arch-2009.08 and Fedora-12 but runs very slow under FreeBSD 8.1?
Notice; I did not not specify a block size for neither OS, so according to the DD documentation it is reading/write 512 blocks at a time from an unbuffered device and as you see ARCH runs like a bat-out-of-hell, regardless.
The only thing I figure is ,,, ARCH-LINUX must be bumping up the default size with-out the user knowledge when no size has been specified by user.  Would this be true?
I notices this tooooo many times in the pass but this time I documented it for proof because I thought it was my imagination most of the time.  I use all three OS by dual-booting when needed, and I use the same code below so they can backup each other when I make configuration changes in either OS.   Machine don't matter... old or new, P3 512MB RAM or Phenom-II-965-QUAD - 8GB RAM, same results.
    Same Command:
    dd if=/dev/sda3 | gzip -c | split -b 3500m - /12/File-Name-dd-By-Arch-Linux.gz.
    ARCH-2009 - 1,504,432,145,920 bytes - 150GB = 2118sec = 35min = 1/2 hour - 71 MB/s
    dd if=/dev/ad4s3 | gzip -c | split -b 3500m - /12/File-Name-dd-By-FreeBSD.gz.
    FBSD 8.1 - 1,504,432,145,920 bytes - 150GB = 16652sec = 277min = 4 1/2hour - 9033694 b/s
    293,812,785 + 0 record in
    293,812,785 + 0 record out

I learn that it's a BLOCK vs CHAR thing.  Linux use BLOCKS.
I use ARCH to control all my HDD's ... Running GRUB and dd'ing to backup all partitions with Windows Vista, Windows-7, FreeBSD Packet filters and routers.  If you use the command I posted it may have an issue if you turn on top during dd'ing a large partition.  I been dd'ing with ARCH with success for over a year and will not be cash out any time soon.  I just learn what to do and what not to do until it is fix.  Don't mean to cross-websites but maybe the author would like to know.
    Here's the story ...

  • When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors.  But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.  Is this a bug in Mavericks?

When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors.  But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.
This happens not just with the SSD in my Mac Mini, but with another SSD in my MacBook (both now running Mavericks).  So far as I know, all of the kit I am using is in good order (despite the file corruption reports).  So I am beginning to wonder if it could be due to a bug in Mavericks?  Both SSD drives have been formatted to MacOS Extended (journaled) format.  Should I have used a different format, I wonder?
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
    Does anyone have a solution?
Or an explanation that might help my investigation of the issue?
    Thanks guys,

I understand that the Corsair Force 3 is not one of the SSD drives that are supported on Apple Macs.
I did try downloading and using Trim Enabler, but the error message came up both when it was off and when it was on.
I understand that not everyone thinks Trim Enabler is a good program, though there is a new version out now, so I may give it another try.
