Anyone Using Apogee Ensemble? How Does It Sound?

the only weak link in my chain is my audio card. was wondering how does it sound compared to other interfaces?
thanks

There's been a very good discussion over at gearslutz. Apogee themselves are taking part...
http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php?t=85743&highlight=apogee+ensemble
Other good threads too if you do a search.
Apogee are currently providing the driver as Apple's firewire driver is ermm... unsuitable.
It is essential that all Ensemble users make sure they are using the latest software from apogee. they've been updating it every month for the past few months. I must say all my problems (well more like annoying niggles really)have gone since the last update - I'm not using every mode/config available of course.
Latency is pretty insignificant compared to the latency your daw provides due to plugins etc. I've just done a session this morning with a mandolin player. With PDC in Logic switched off for the busses I could still use plenty of plugins/VI's without problems (for his playing). Buffer is set to 128k right now. macpro's are just mind blowing!
As I type this I'm listening to Anoushk Shankar on CD through my ensemble and mackie 824's. Godd ddamn it sounds good:-)

To remove Audiobooks depending on the type of Audiobook ie a series of mp3 files you will find under music and probably have to deselect the album name to remove it. I don't have any of these as I download from Audible or I use Audiobook Builder to stictch together mp3 files into m4b files. To find these Click on Books you will immediately see a section for books (in reality ebooks). Scroll down past that and you will see Audiobooks where you can select and deselect. Deselect the required Audiobooks and Click Sync

Go into the settings and the app store. there you'll see the options to automatially update purchases. You can turn it off for music or other content. That should keep things from automatically downloading to both your devices.

  • How do you Control SPDIF input levels in Logic Pro using Apogee Ensemble

    Hello,
Question. I have an Apogee Ensemble audio interface hooked up to my Macbook Pro. I have a Motif XS8 that I record audio from through SPDIF.
I am able to get sound through to my audio track once setting the inputs in Logic, however the levels are not even close to halfway. I can not figure out how to fix adjust the SPDIF level to make it hotter b/c I know once I add virtual tracks and vocals through my preamp, the audio from my motif will likely not be hearable.
    Please let me know.
Also, when I record an audio track is says about 15 minutes remaining to record. Does that mean I have 15 mins of audio for each track or for all my recording period???

Not owning an Apogee Ensemble, maybe someone else who does has more definitive info can jump in, but do not confuse the lower level of the SPDIF input with "lesser quality". It's a digital connection, with no analog conversion.
-18 dBFS on a digital scale is the same as 0dB on an analog scale.
I think what you're experiencing, is the fact that so many people think they need to get the meters in Logic closer to 0dB, which is actually NOT what you want (when staying ITB). This thinking is left over from the days of analogue recording, or the early days of 16 bit digital recording.
Turn your other sources in Logic down, and you'll reap the benefits of not overloading the 2 buss, allowing the plug-ins to do their computations without distorting, etc... Then you can bring the over all level of your mix back up, in mastering.
If the Motif is considerably lower in volume than that, you could always insert a gainer plug-in on the audio track.
As to the 15 minutes, that is what Logic has pre-allocated for recording to your hard drive. It "re-sets" each time you go into record, so it's not saying "you only have 15 minutes of record time available". It's saying, "you have 15 minutes of hard disk space allocated each time you go into record, based on your sample rate and bit depth settings". This can be changed in the Audio pathway, but it's recommended to leave this number as low as possible/necessary, to avoid disk fragmentation.

  • [SOLVED] How does "gnome sound center" assign streams to new sink?

I recently bought a usb amp/dac, and I would like to easily switch between using my default speakers (onboard audio) and the usb amp/dac.
I'm using PulseAudio and found out that I can switch between sinks and move audio streams with the utility "pactl". However, I cannot move audio streams that are not playing (e.g. a paused YouTube clip), which results in that some applications use my onboard audio and some the usb amp/dac. Very annoying.
The odd thing is that when I tried changing the active soundcard in gnome control center, every application uses the new settings - regardless if the audio stream was active or not! What does the sound settings of gnome control center do to achieve this?
This is what I'm currently doing:
    #!/bin/bash
    [...parsing and stuff...]
    pactl set-default-sink "$selected_sink_value"
    [...some controls and volume adjustments...]
pactl list short sink-inputs | while read stream; do
    stream_id=$(echo $stream | cut '-d ' -f1)
    echo "Moving stream id $stream_id"
    pactl move-sink-input "$stream_id" "$selected_sink_value"
    done

Finally found a solution to this problem a few days ago (by accident too!).
The reason why the sound settings of gnome-control-panel works is that it modifies PulseAudio's "stream-restore database". I don't know how one would do that by hand, but it sounds complex. Instead, I edited /etc/pulse/default.pa and added "restore_device=false" to the line loading "module-stream-restore". Now every single audio stream plays via the default sink, even if I use pactl.
Thought I might as well post a solution since there seems to be many people asking the same thing. Maybe this'll help someone?

    hello cyrilca,
when you registered on this forum, you did read the terms & conditions that specifically explained that this forum is a community forum. The contributors here are BlackBerry enthusiasts, that spend part of their free time to help other BlackBerry owners.
BlackBerry employees do not monitor the forum (apart from moderation and very specific issues).
So if the whole point of posting the question here is to get a BlackBerry employee read it, it will fail. The best way to reach BlackBerry is to talk to the carrier. They are the BlackBerry customers, and as such, after many people going to their shops or contacting the helpdesk frontline, will report to BlackBerry what is going on.

as far as I know, unless you live in India or Indonesia, the support about BlackBerry phones is taken care of by the carrier. You pay the carriers, you do not pay BlackBerry. I am not giving my opinion, this is the way it works and it is the same for Samsung, LG, Sony and Motorola.
    3)
I am not sure what pages you are referring to, but indeed I have seen a couple of pages forthe Z10 that were not perfect, but that was localized pages. So I guess by the time the carriers sell the Z10 in a given country, the corresponding localized pages will be perfect.
That being said, I find it extreme to refuse to buy a smartphone for the sole reason that you do not have information about the DAC.
but yet again, I know I cannot accept an iPhone product because they cannot play FLAC files...

  • Garageband - using apogee Jam and acoustic guitar sound

    Hi
I am trying to record an acoustic guitar on garageband (using my actual acoustic guitar), however the sound of the low strings sounds really muffled and low quality. i am using the built-in mic on my Mac to do this, not any external equipment. Is it advisible to always use an external mic and/or directly plug any instrument directly into the Mac? Are there any methods to improve the sound of recording?
I also purchased an apogee Jam device to plug electric guitar and bass directly into my Mac and record. It seems to be working, however, i cant get any output sound at all (when playing or recording). it does record, but only like an unplugged electric instrument would sound. On the 'Track' menu at the top, the option to 'show monitoring for real instrument tracks' is greyed out when i have the Jam plugged in. i cant find any way to hear the instrument in Garageband at all.
    I am using a Mac Book Pro, Garageband 11 V. 6.0.5.
    Any help, much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Dom

    Dom,
Double check that your JAM the selected input source by opening System Preferences>Sound>Input and select JAM. When you open GarageBand make sure to start a new "Real Instrument Track" or "Guitar Track" (if you want to add any crazy effects to the acoustic signal). Also make sure to select the button "I want to hear my instrument as I play and record."

  • Confirm site use and deletion - How does it work?

I've been trying to find answers to this topic and read through a number of posts and technet, but I can't seem to get a clear answer on how this process works.  Actually my concern is that I have seen conflicting answers.
As I read the description, it "sounds" like that if we set a date of 180 days, then the system will send an email to the site owner 180 days after site creation so they can confirm usage.  If they confirm, then the clock starts again and they
will get another email in 180 days.  If they don't confirm, then we go into the config for multiple emails and eventual deletion.
Is that how it really works?  I would have thought it would track inactivity someway, but I can't seem to find it that is true.  Does it track inactivity?  If so, how?  By last content update or last visit?

Run a test in a dev enviroment and you will find that they are wrong, unless it changed for 2013.  I haven't specifically verified it lately, but it definitely didn't work that way in 2007 or 2010.  Also check this sentence from the "Plan for site
maintenance and management in SharePoint 2013" article on 2013 found here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262509.aspx#section3
"This feature works by automatically sending an e-mail message to site owners to see if they consider their site active. "
Notice that it doesn't say anything about sending it only to "Inactive" site owners.  The way I read this is that it goes to ALL site
owners.  That's the way it worked in the past and I don't think its been upgraded.

  • Trackpad click sound, how does yours sound?

Hi, just wondering if everyones trackpad has a fairly loud click sound when being pressed, when you are doing a lot of clicking it can get pretty annoying, just wondering if everyone else's trackpad is the same, and if so will it go away after more use? I wish it was silent!
Message was edited by: Jeremy Summers

I have the same issue with the sound of the click on the new trackpad. It's REALLY loud as opposed to my older MacBook Pro which nearly silent.
The button is also WAY harder to click than the original MBP. In fact, it's so much harder to click, after prolonged use my wrist is starting to hurt. This never happened to me before on any of my other Macs. I've had a 17" PowerBook G4 and the original Core Duo MacBook Pro. None of those had difficult to press or loud buttons.
I'm worried that I'm going to start having some real serious wrist problems with this new machine. I love the speed, the style, and I really like the keyboard. But the trackpad button is driving me crazy.
I sure hope it will get easier to press over time. I've tried using the Tap to Click feature, but that never works very well for me. I constantly end up selecting things and opening things I had never intended on accessing.
I wonder if they are all like that? Maybe it could be swapped out for a trackpad with a lighter touch on the button.
    Thanks,
    Brendan

  • What is "Print to file" used for? How does one use it?

From a web page I navigate FILE-->PRINT then check 'print to file' box. Firefox saves the file to its folder in C:\Program Files..
When later, I want to retrieve the data and print it out it refuses to be opened by any known software, including Firefox!. Even Dell seems to have no documentation on what this feature is for, or how to use it. I thought this was a convenient tool for saving print jobs for later processing. Boy was I wrong! Who knows what's going down here?

Checking the "Print to file" was earlier one way, however maybe not the best one, to generate postscript code, if you had defined a postscript printer. This printer could be completely virtual and not necessarily exist in the real world. Many of the Hewlett-Packard printers were usable. This was in a time when just a few programs could generate pdf code, but you had the Ghostscript program and its ps2pdf tool to do the conversion. As postscript is a text format, you could also edit the file, if so wanted, before the converson.

  • DELETE when using a JOIN - How does this work?

I need to perform a DELETE but must join 2 tables to get the correct rows. I only want to delete data from one table. Unfortunately, neither table has a primary key. Is there an easy way to do this and be certain of the results? (I've inherited this database and have no source code or documentation.... So the obvious solution of fixxing the data structure isn't really an option.) Thanks for your help.

Without seeing your data structures and with the lack of primary keys, it is hard to give a specific response, but in general, the delete might look something like:
    delete
      from t1
    where id in (select t1.id
                    from t1, t2
                   where t2.id = t1.id
and t2.some_column = 'something');Here the subquery is joining the two tables together and examining a column in the "non-delete" table to see if the corresponding row should be deleted. The resultant ids are then deleted from the base table (t1).
Is this close to what you are trying to do?

  • How does this sound???

Ok so basically I have to rma my msi board because my second channel of memory is not working...did all the test recommended and narrowed problem down to mobo.
So I have to rma the board and I can't go six week without a computer.....I was thinking of buying an asus p4p800-e deluxe board to replace the msi board.
But now I’m thinking I should upgrade to an amd platform by buying a MSI athlon 64 socket 939 board and an athlon 64 3000+ (283 dollars total)
If i sell my p4 on eBay I can make 150-160 bucks and If I sell my msi board after the rma comes in I can make 30-40 bucks...so all in all If i upgrade to the a64 system I will spend about 100 dollars.
If I upgrade to the asus motherboard I spend 113?
What do you guys recommend? I’m leaning toward the amd system right now.

i´m happy with my current p4-system, but if i would by a new system today i would probably go for the 939 socket.
something like the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum.

  • PeopleSoft Analytic Calculation Engine - Anyone using it?

We are planning to use PeopleSoft Analytic Calculation Engine in HRMS 8.9. We have simple needs such as showing headcount/turnover rate metrics.
Has anyone used it? How is your experience?
    Thanks

Having our own LMS, we do not use the Peoplesoft one, but we have a client that I'm pretty sure does. They've referred to it as the Peoplesoft LMS and the Oracle LMS...but pretty sure it's one in the same (as Oracle bought Peoplesoft months ago, right?)
The biggest issue we've heard about it is no Interaction-level tracking support. Now I don't know what version they have but not being able to track interaction data was a big disappointment to them. They hired a contractor to customize and add such functionality and it works, mostly, but has some flaws...and, of course, if they ever update their LMS, likely that customization will be blown away.
Otherwise, the only other complaint I heard was the cost and time of integration with their other systems (whatever those may be - HR and such, I imagine). It wasn't cheap or quick.
I'd like to balance this out but I've not heard any positive comments on it, other than it does integrate with their HR system.
