Anyone using FCP's file manager to remotely share files, anyone using FCP's file manager to remotely share files?

Hi:
I am looking to build a solution for a prospective client.  I want to use FCP server's file manager to allow remote users to access and obtain content.  This arrangement is actually for healthcare solution. I know FCP is used to manage and transfer files, but I am not sure what controls, access, etc are available to make assurances these files are not manipulated.

I've been using FCP for a long time and I do not know of "file manager" tool. Are you looking for an evaluation of FCP Server? That's a different forum, not many users of that app here.

  • Using VPN to access remote servers; copying files to desktop since "upgrading" to Mavericks no longer works. Can anyone help please?

    Hi everyone,
I work remotely using Cisco AnyConnect (company provided) to access the company servers. Until "upgrading" to Mavericks I was able to copy files directly to my desktop – from either the servers themselves, from within Bridge, and/or by using the finder - you get the idea. Now I can only copy the files by opening them while still on the server using the native app (in my case mainly InDesign/Photoshop/Illustrator files) and saving them to my desktop that way.
I'm a designer, I use a lot of files for my specific job every day and these files are often pretty large and doing it this way is time-consuming and really frustrating seeing as I had no such issues with the previous OS. It's not a total nightmare (yet) like some of things some of you are dealing with but I've spent more time restarting, freezing and trying to fix issues than I have actually using my darned machine. I have no choice but to access my work this way; I'm part of a much larger team and we all work on these files off and on during the day so I'm constantly needing to copy files and make sure I'm working on the most current version. Working off the server isn't an option as the speed decreases considerably... making the slightest task cringingly slow. As in 25 minutes for a PDF to be created slow.
I've been used to my system running smoothly, without issues and fast so this upgrade is turning into a bit of a nightmare. Before I throw in the towel and try and downgrade, does anyone have any ideas? My technical knowledge where these things are concerned isn't beginner but I'm no expert  and I'm stumped. I just don't know where to start and I'm afraid of screwing something else up during the process of trying to fix this (so far) one issue and creating a snowball effect.
I'm using a 27" iMac (late model 2012 purchased in March 2013) with a second Viewsonic monitor attached. I have a Cintiq 22HD hooked up (but not on all the time) and a Wacom tablet in use. I currently use both CS5 (work hasn't upgraded to CC yet) and Adobe CC (for personal use) on my system.
Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
By default, the Remote Desktop (RD) Gateway component that encapsulates RDP in HTTPS packets listens on port 443 (for TCP) and port 3391 (for UDP). After you changed the ports in Transport Settings tab, please make sure that you have opened the custom ports
    you selected in Windows Firewall.
In addition, since you have mentioned the registry key, would you please share the entire path?
It seems that you need to manually update the gateway in the RDP file with the port. Have you created an .rdp file? You can also refer to the link below:

  • Has anyone used "Final Cut Library Manager" with FCP X 10.1?

I've just noticed this inexpensive app which looks interesting.
    http://www.arcticwhiteness.com/finalcutlibrarymanager/
    Has anyone used it?
    Comments?

I assume you are referring to Event Manager which I also found extremely good.
On the face of it, this looks rather like EM's  successor plus a more "FCP X"  looking interface.
At first sight it promises to be a "must have" app,  but it's only by using it that its true worth and any potential flaws will be revealed.
What's good is that you can download the demo version (not quite fully functional) to try out before you buy.

  • Does anyone know how to import files into FCP X using focus enhancements FS-CV (DTE)?

I've just purchase Final Cut X and the system does not recognise any (most) of the files on my FS-CV DTE hard drive. All files are quicktime.

In FCP 7 I'd normally use the Log and Transfer function to convert the AVCHD files to ProRes. However with FCP X you can use the Import from Camera... command in the File menu or the button shortcut for the same function.
This can be done by connecting the camera, or putting the memory card from the camera into a card reader, and then, from within the Imprt from Camera dialogue, selecting Open Archive and select the camera, card or in my case the backup I've made of the card.
I regularly back up my AVCHD files to hard disk, or BluRay data disk, so I can reuse my SD cards but an important thing to remember when doing this is that you need to copy the whole directory structure of the memory card to a new folder on the hard drive. Simply selecting the .mts files won't work as the 'Import From Camera' function needs to see the whole directory structure to interpret the what files are there etc. I create a new folder and then copy all the folders and files on my card into that folder on my hard drive. When selecting Import from Camera/Open Archive I then choose the folder, not the files inside it. Once this is done the video files are presented and I can audition them and choose to import all of them or select the files I want.
None of these methods require the files to be transcoded prior to import. You can choose the transcoding method during import so that either high quality ProRes files are created or Proxy files, smaller and lower quality for editing.

  • Anyone tried using a QText file with FCP?

I was just wondering if there is some way to utilize a QText file for captioning with FCP, either directly of by importing it into QTPro, then exporting it in a form that FCP understands? The idea is to use these as timed text overlays.

QText is a bit more, at least to my limited understanding. Let's say you have a QText file with 10 lines of text you want to display. In the header you can specify color, size, etc. Before each line of text you enter a time code which represents the start time for displaying that line. For example:
    [00:00:00]
This is my first line and displays for 4 seconds
    [00:00:04]
This line is displayed 4 seconds after the first, and displays for 6 seconds
    [00:00:10]
and this line is 6 seconds after the one above (i.e. 10 seconds in).
and so on. One way to look at it, each line of text becomes a slide which displays until the next line is called.
When fed to QTime, you get a very nice vector graphics display of each line at the specified time. It would be great if I could export that as a video file which I then could use in an overlay track in FCP. QTPro offers several export options including such as MP4, m4v, etc. Dragging these files into FCP either generates a Codec error when rendered or isn't recognized at all. I guess I could use a video screen capture program and capture the QTP display, but that seems like a crude and slow process. I had hoped, since FCP and QTP are both Apple products they would have found some way to integrate them. No mention of QText in the FCP help file, so it would appear no such luck.

  • Is there any downside to using a reference type library if I use Time Capsule and will do file management only from within Aperture?

Have done a lot of reading to get prepared to convert to Aperture 3 and have this question regarding setting up my library type.
I'm not a professional -just a heavy user hobbyist.
It appears that the major factors in using reference style is to backup the images with Time Capsule and always do moves or deletes from within the Aperture application.
If my architecture matters here's what I have that may be involved in photo management and editing:
iMac (latest 27" high power version with lots of memory)
Internal 2TB HD where the library is stored
External (FireWire) 2TB HD where the images are stored
External (FireWire) 6TB HD backup drive
In the future an iPad for remote work on images (when/if available) and a Mac laptop (for same remote use)
I see major downside issues to letting the library manage my files - such as inaccessibility (or awkward accessibility) to the images for other programs, and performance issues when the library gets large (thousands of images or 100+ gb in size)
The chief complaints I've seen regarding using a reference mode is the broken link issues created if file management is done outside of Aperture (adds, deletes, moves of files) and the inability to use the Vault function for backup.
One feature that I imagine I'd like to have is maximum integration with Final Cut Pro X and that's one area I haven't seen much on and would be interested to hear about if that integration is affected with the choice of managed vs referenced library types. (I like to produce film clips that are combinations of pics and video and want to be set up so that is done in the easiest fashion when working in FCP X)
I'm sure I've not seen all sides of this issue and would like to see some discussion around this question.
    Thanks to everyone contributing!

Goody, Goody, you hit a few of my favorite subjects! Herewith some comments, with the usual caveats - true to the best of my knowledge and experience, others may have different results, YMMV, and I could be wrong.
I run Aperture on two machines:
-- 2007 Mac Pro with 2x2.66 GHz Xeon, 21 GB of RAM, a 5770 GPU, and multiple HD. I have about 11,000 images, taking up 150 GB. (Many are 100 MB TIFF, scanned slides)
-- 2006 Mac Book Pro with 1 2.0 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB of RAM and a 240 GB SSD.
    Two very different machines.
-- Aperture Libraries are all the same - Managed or Referenced. If Managed, then the Master image files are inside the Package, if Referenced, they are outside, and you can have any combination you want. Managed is easier, but Referenced is not hard if you are the least bit careful.
-- While the sheer size of an Aperture Library is not a big issue, the location on disk of the different components can have a tremendous impact on performance.
-- Solid State Drives (SSD) read and write faster than regular Hard Disks (HD) and, what is more important, empty HD read and write much faster than full HD.
-- Aperture speed requires a combination of RAM, CPU, graphics processing unit (GPU) speed, and disk speed. The more RAM you have, the less paging you will see. With enough RAM, the next bottle neck is CPU (speed and cores) and GPU speed. But even then you will still have to fetch an image (longer if you pull the full resolution Master, read and rewrite the Version file, and update the Preview and Thumbs.
    So what works?
-- RAM, RAM, and more RAM. 4 GB will work, but you will page a bit. 8 GB is much faster. On my old MacPro the sweet spot was about 16 GB of RAM.
-- Keep your Library on your fastest (usually internal) drive. Keep that disk as unloaded as possible. How do you keep it unloaded? Either buy BIG, 1 TB+ or move your Masters off onto another disk. The good news here is that as Master files are written only once and never rewritten, speed of this disk, as opposed to the disk that holds the Library, is not important. There is a one second pause as the Master is read into memory and, if you have enough RAM, that is it - the Master will never be paged out. If, on the other hand, you do not have enough RAM, and you do a lot of adjusting at full resolution, then the speed of the disk that holds your Masters will become very important due to paging.
-- I found that I picked up a tiny bit of speed by keeping the Masters on a dedicated disk. Thus, in your configuration, if you can dedicate that 2 TB FW HD to your Masters, you should see very nice performance.
Final notes on backups and archives:
-- One conventional wisdom is that you should make an archive copy of every image file before or as you load them into your system. (Aperture in this case.) This archive is then never touched or deleted.
-- An alternative approach is that you do not keep such an archive, but only the images that you have in your Aperture Library. And when you delete from the Library, you no longer keep a copy anywhere.
    I do the following:
-- Card to Aperture. Card is then kept at least 24 hours until all of my backups have run. (I use three - Time Machine, Clone, and off site.)
-- I do not keep archive copies. If I decide to delete a file, my only recourse is to recover it from Time Machine during the six month cycle of my Time Machine backups. Thereafter, it is lost.
There are merits to both approaches.
Hope this is clear, correct, and responsive to your needs.

  • Using Media Manager to 'Make Offline' it re-names media files to 'Private'

For some reason Media Manager is changing the name of media files when processing them making it impossible to reconnect them.
My director always has a complete copy of our film's media files on his 'home set-up' (FCP 5.0 on a Powerbook with 2 x 500gb firewire drives) so he can look at our cuts at home. This has caused problems in the past with firewire drives expiring or failing to mount: making the whole process pointless. Also, as the amount of footage increased, he struggled to find space for the 6-8 drives required.
My solution was to down-convert our DV resolution media files to Photo-Jpeg resolution which allowed me to fit 3TB of footage onto 2 brand new G-Tech drives. Every time I sent him a cut to view all I had to do was use media manager to make the sequence offline and convert it to exactly the same Photo-Jpeg setting I used to export the files. All he has to do is reconnect the sequence to his drives at his end.
A wonderful plan except when you came to reconnecting. I found that 95% of clips connect perfectly and then you get asked for the location of some media files called 'Trashes' 'Applications' or more commonly, 'Private'. Obviously no such files existed - I use an impeccably organised and structured filename system when capturing. Therefore it made random clips in my sequence impossible to reconnect once it had been converted to the settings used by the director.
When this only happened once or twice I thought I could easily just work out what files it was actually looking for by the clip names on the timeline and tell FCP to reconnect to the correct file by ignoring the file name but this is so time consuming and impractical when you have 20/30 clips that have been renamed on a sequence. It is also not the sort of thing my director is technically capable/willing to do.
It also seems to be happening when you convert things in the other direction. When I took a sequence from the director's project and brought it back onto my system by converting his sequence to my DV-PAL settings we got the same problems with 'Private and 'Applications' clips. And we know for sure that all of these clips were online on his computer.
Has anyone seen this before or know any steps I could take to prevent it happening.
I fear that if I can't get this method to work I will have to give him full resolution media to work with and I will be fated to spend the rest of my days replacing. smashing or swearing at firewire drives that only work when they feel like it.
    Anybody got any ideas.
    Cheers
    Paul
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

haven't tried this but it may be worth some investigation.
try exporting an XML of your sequence and passing that to the director
on the director's FCP setup, import the xml, and in the Import XML... window uncheck the "Override with setting from XML" checkbox, and choose the approriate offline res that matches the directors media.
see if the resulting sequence will reconnect

  • Remotely checking file versions using PowerShell

    Hi
Can anyone give me a start. I support many servers and PCs remotely which I have remote access to. I would like to be able to check file versions on servers and Pcs remotely to see if I can save myself any time.
I've managed this befo using VBS and just wondered if the same was possible using Power Scripts.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please - I'm very new to PS also :)
    Kind Regards
    Matthew

That's looking for a .VersionInfo property on a string. Try this (notice the parentheses):
    (Get-ChildItem '\\10.1.2.3\c$\temp\Test.exe').VersionInfo
That's going to return its own object, though. Explorer is going to show you four of the properties from that combined. The easiest way to get something is to just use the 'FileVersion' property, but again, that's not always reliable if you're interested
in build/private versions, and it's not what Explorer shows you.
If you use the Update-TypeData (or the .ps1xml for v2) from the
gallery page I mentioned, you could do this:
    (Get-ChildItem '\\10.1.2.3\c$\temp\Test.exe').PSFileVersion
And that would give you the version Explorer shows you. You can also use comparison operators against other "Version" types.
You can put the steps required to set that up in your profile, and then that computer will always have that property on file objects.

  • File Managment - FCP X Vs Imovie

    Hi,
I'm trying to optimize my videos file managment I have a lot of clips and movies created with FCP. I was wondering if for the pure file managment make more sense to use iMove rather than FCP X. Anyone using both?
Moreover, I'm used to store original clips in my external HD, but If I import them with FCP 10 they are incorporated in the library file, how can I import clips and store them without the library issue? Ideally puting them directly in the external HD?

Thanks, I will then use FCP only.
I had still a couple of questions.
    a) How can import clips from my camera with FCP 10 without having original encript in library files? Or should I use a different tool just for import?
    b) All clips I imported in the past from my camera (sony) are .mov they are terrible heavy, one trip orinal clips only are hundreds of GB. What is the best file format for original clips in your view?

  • Simple file server accessible remotely with managed access. Do I need ML Server for this?

    Hello,
I have a  Mac Mini that will be dedicated to serving 15 folders of documents to 7 people. It would be great if each person had their own password and I'd like to be able to decide what folders each user will have access to. The people need to be able to access the files from home and on the office network.
Do I NEED to run OS X server for this Or can i accomplish this in OS X?
I have to get this running quickly and I may not have time for the ML Server learning curve (even though it has been simplified).
I tried to get ML server running on my machine a few weeks ago but got stuck. If setting up ML server with JUST the file server is dramatically easier I will try again. Can anyone please suggest a tutorial that takes me through simply setting up a remotely accessible file server with managed access with ML Server?

OS X client can serve files to remote clients, via both SMB/CIFS and AFS; via the Windows and OS X fiel services.  That's cheap, uses hardware you already have, and works fine.
Most NAS boxes don't do distributed authentication.  Typically, you have credentials for the box at most.  Some of the mid- and upper-end boxes do offer distributed authentication, but that means having that authentication around.  At the low end, an Apple Time Capsule is a reasonable NAS box, and you can add an external disk.   And can be used for backups via Time Machine, too.  The mid- and upper-end boxes from Synology have a reputation for capabilities and flexibility.  There are (many) other vendors.
I'm not a huge fan of LogMeIn for various reasons that I won't get into here, but that service does work for accessing hosts.  I don't know if that allows access to NAS directly, but I'd tend to doubt it.  You'd need to check with both LogMeIn and with the specs for whatever NAS box you're using.
Given the choice, I'd use a VPN.
Using a VPN does mean you can control — at the VPN level — who can access your private network, so that can provide a broad-brush form of access control to your NAS device or your OS X client or your OS X Server box, if you go that route.
I don't prefer to openly serve files to the internet, as the underlying protocols have occasionally had security issues and vulnerabilities, and the internet gremlins will find and will poke at any open ports and any accessible file servers.  I prefer to configure these services via VPN.
VPNs are also more involved to set up, where LogMeIn can be simple.
As mentioned previously, I'm also not a huge fan of the host-based VPN servers in OS X, though those do work.  The gateway boxes I've been using in the last year or so are probably not a good choice for a user that isn't familiar with networking  — the boxes provide a user interface that very definitely expect the user to understand IP and routing and related, but is both self-consistent and quite powerful — and they're cheap for what they can do, and they do work nicely.  ZyXEL ZyWALL USG series.  If you are evaluating any of these firewall boxes, then I'd definitely encourage downloading the manuals and making sure you can understand the available information.  The server-grade firewall boxes are almost inherently flexible and thus complex devices.
One of the easiest ways is to work with somebody that does this sort of thing to sort through the options and requirements and trade-offs available here, and potentially to set up your VPN or NAS or server configuration for you.  (Disclosure: I offer this.)

  • Remote Voice Over Workflows using FCP - thoughts?

I am going to try and keep this as simple as possible.
I am Producer and host for an Australian Drag Racing Show that we air nationally...
We record these shows in Full 1080 HD using modern XFILE systems (EVS) using the Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) codec.
Our ENG/EFP team use XDCAM (full 1080i HD).
We edit these shows using FCP 7 amongst a few suites.
I also do some offline content on my 17inch i7 MBP using FCP too.
    My question is thus:
The Post Production Team are based in Sydney on the east coast, whilst I am based in Western Australia - this is like being in LA in comparison to New York!
I want to reduce my travel commitment by air, as in the past I have travelled weekly to commentate these shows (40+ shows a year!)
I have - as does the production house - a reasonably good ADSL Internet connection.
I do a lot of Producing and program checks using iChat Theatre within FCP 7. It is quite good.
What I want to get to though is a way in being able to more often commentate these shows remotely from home, without the need for me to physically having to be across country on every occasion - for my sanity's sake.
My co-commentator also lives near me, however our editors are all based across country, together in Sydney.
I see the following options as being the way to do this:
    OPTION 1.
When we ingest (log and transfer) the vision, I will always be in Sydney at that time. There are usually several shows generated from this vision.
I copy the Quicktime MOV files that are for use in the shows to my external (eSATA) HD.
Editors in Sydney cut the racing components of our show. They then email me the FCP project file.
(I have FCP, the required Audio and Mics)
Then, I open this FCP Project File and re-link and re-render as required once I receive this and we commentate the shows using the VO utility within Final Cut.
I then do an Audio export only and send the editors the updated FCP Project file, for them to receive and re-link the vision as required, sound mix and print.
    OPTION 2.
The Editors cut the shows, then export either within FCP or Compressor a reduced quality file size to send via FTP or sendspace.
I then import this vision locally into FCP, render the vision and commentate it accordingly and just send back the audio.
    SO:
What would you all suggest as the easiest and best way to do this. We do have tight work timeframes in terms of getting content to air.
I think Option1 is by far the best, and what I am not sure about is if I did Option2 - what settings for export and I want to avoid bogging down the editors on handling cumbersome vision exports anyway?
    Thoughts?
    Dean...

I would probably go with option 2, myself - I usually export my cuts and run the movie thru compressor with the H.264 LAN or H.264 800KBPS presets. These are found under Apple/Other Workflows/Web/Streaming/Quicktime 7/
These take up roughly 10MB per minute and 5MB per minute respectively.
While I have used Option 1 (duplicate media, transferring a project file), this can get problematic when the editors have generated media - like effects, color correction, etc...

Unfortunately iWeb cannot read or import previously published files, only generate them.  You'll have to recreate your site from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

  • How do I use m2ts movie file format from my old pc with FCP on my mac?

I have recently moved from a PC to a iMac. I have a large number of Sony AVCHD movie files, which were imported to my PC and are in the m2ts file format on my PC. The original files on my Sony camera were deleted so these files are now all I have. Also, for each movie clip on my PC there are 3 files....a very large m2ts file along..... with two very small file....one is a .modd file and the other a .moff file.
I now want to use these m2ts files (and if needed possibly these other two smaller files) on my Mac make movies with either iMovie or Final Cut Pro. and don't know how to import them or convert them for use on my Mac. Can anyone help?
One final question. Can FCP author DVD's or is separate software required. Apple has discontinued iDVD for iMovie (which I find rediculous) and so I'm worried they don't support making DVD's with FCP.
    Thanks

Although I don't use Toast I know lots of people who do and like it for a variety of purposes; for example, many people author in DVDSP and burn disks using Toast. But there are a lot of versions and they have differing features and capability. Do a search in these (or iDVD) forums you'll find plenty of info. Don't know about the other app. Again, if you ask Apple, they may come through with iDVD…they have for others.
Clipwrap quality limitations? Try the trial and test the results for yourself. As far as I know the trial is fully freatured but there is a one minute clip limitation (which doesn't apply to the paid version).
    Good luck.
