Anyone using Gimp on OSX?  Compared to PS Elements?

Looking to design my own logos/leterhead etc.  My PS Eelements4.0 is not working on iMac (too old a version).
before I buy the latest PS Eelements, I'm downloading Gimpfo rfree.  Anyone compared both?  Would love your feedback.  Will let you know how I find using Gimp once I play with it.

Just tried playing with gimp and I see what you mean.  If I take the time to read the manual, I can see it has most the same features for my purposes.  I also just tried Inkscape (free also) and that has some interesting features as well.  Worth investing some graphics playtime in both before I buy a current version of PSE.  I suspect you're right though - when pressed to complete a project, I'll run out to buy what I know - PSE.  Same reason I'm still using MSWord and Excel instead of iWork.

  • "Is anyone using OpenOffice for OSX 10.9.1?"

Because Pages doesn't offer a "hidden text" function, which I need regularly, I'm tossing up between Microsoft Office for Mac and the free OpenOffice for Mac. I have an Air, OSX 10.9.1. Is anyone in the community using OpenOffice ona similar system and if so how are you finding it? Thanks.

    Hi
You will probably get better performance on your MBA if you use a version of OpenOffice called NeoOffice.
NeoOffice is built off the same opensource code as OpenOffice and LibreOffice, but has been over many years fine-tuned to work excellently on Macs.  This results in an app that runs faster on OS X, and makes much better use of the OS X environment (and behaves more like a "real" OS X app).
Here are some performance comparisons between NeoOffice and LibreOffice - it is faster across the board (and not just a little bit - file opening is about 2x faster across the board, printing between 2x and 6x faster - depending on which module you are using)
Here is a breakdown of the extra OS X features you get in NeoOffice that make it work better on OS X compared to the others.
You can get NeoOffice from the AppStore or direct from team who maintain it.
    HTH.

  • Is anyone here using GIMP 2.5?

Before I jump back into the development branch of GIMP, I want to know if deep color support is enabled yet. Is anyone using GIMP from subversion right now? If so, is it stable? Is 16 bit color in yet?

As Larry says, you've just trashed your Library.
You may have removed files but the database is now bunged up, wuth entries that point to photos that no longer exist, thumbnails that persist and so on.
    Restore from your back up.
For dealing with duplicates in iPhoto check out Duplicate Annihilator This flags duplicates in iPhoto and you then trash them via iPhoto.

You're not heavy on specifics on what you don't like.
Most people have little technical expertise but are wanting more and more, requiring more complex computers, ideally ending up with one from Star Trek where you basically don't have to know anything how to really use a computer and it just provides you with the exact answer you need to a not particularly well-phrased query.  If you're missing things like configuration options and the rest, well frankly I think many people are happy not to have to make complicated decisions for themselves such as in which opening do they insert a system installer disc.

  • Has anyone used this cool WebCam with a Mac yet?

i'm in the market for a webcam for my new mac pro. i'm looking for the very best one out there. i ran into this WebCam called "aGent V4 HD". It looks awesome! Its a 3MP HD WebCam that comes with a desk mount and LCD mount. But its sold out of Australia. I was wondering if anyone has used it with osx 10.5.6.
    here's a link:
    http://agent.liquiddigital.com.au/index.htm

I've just taken delivery of one of these and have to say that, a few glitches aside, I'm pretty impressed. It looks quite sexy and gives a great quality picture that has been commented on by all Skype correspondents who hitherto were used to my looking like a bowl of porridge.
It comes with 3 useful mounting devices including a great grappling hook looking thing which will hang on top of my 30" cinema display but I actually prefer to have it on the floor stand at head height otherwise the angle is a bit high from all the way up there.
The only disappointment for me is that I cannot seem to get the internal mic working. Fortunately it does come with a clip on mic which does work when plugged in via the USB gizmo but the built in cam mic just won't play for me.
I wonder if I'm missing something because I have an older webcam with a built in mic which again I have never had any joy with.
Any useful suggestions in this point gratefully received!

  • Has anyone used Thunderbolt or USB 3.0?

In the not too distant future I am intending to upgrade from my 2008 24"  2.8GHz iMac.
The new models appear to have gone down the Thunderbolt route which appears to be not very popular with HDs being few and far between and very expensive.
USB 3.0 whilst theoretically only half the speed seems to be taking off and reasonably cheap, and appears to be more universally adopted.
Could Apple have backed the wrong horse on this occasion?
Sorry, I was just thinking aloud, definitely not speculating.
So has anyone used Thunderbolt and got anything good or bad to say about it?

    Not personally:
The german computer-magazine c't tested the Promise Pegasus R6 Thunderbolt and found it speedwise way ahead of USB 3.0 and eSATA.
    As a RAID-Level 0 with 6 x Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 (7.200 U/min, 1TB each) and MBP 13" 2011 OSX 10.6.8:
    Write - 693 MByte/s
    Read - 721 MByte/s
    Read AND Write - 323 MByte/s
Time Machine -capable and OS X Bootable.

  • What are the advantage of using Oracle Database when compare to SQL SERVER

    Hi,
There are various differences between the two.
    1. SQL Server is only Windows, but Oracle runs on almost all Platforms.
    2. You can have multiple databases in SQL Server, but Oracle provides you only one database per instance.Given that the very term 'database' has s different meaning in the two products, this "difference" is absolutely meaningless.
    3. SQL Server provides T-SQL for writing programs, whereas Oracle provides PL/SQLWhich means what? Both products have a procedural programming language. They named them differently, and the languages are not interchangeable. Means nothing in comparing the features/strengths/weaknesses/suitability to purpose.
    4. Backup types in both are the same. (Except Oracle provides an additional backup called Logical Backup.)You make that sound like "Logical Backup" is something more than it is. It is nothing more than an export of the data and metadata. Many experts don't even consider it a backup. I'm sure SQL Server provides the same functionality though they probably call it by some other name.
    5. Both provide High Availability.Well, I guess they both have a suite of features they refer to as "High Availability". But what does that really mean? The devil is in the details. Remember, the two products don't even agree on what constitutes a "database".
    6. Both come in various distributions.???

If you are going for an Implementation, you can try SQL Server Express Edition and Oracle XE which are free to use.
Then you can choose whichever is comfortable for your needs.

  • Anyone using iZotope Ozone 3 to master?

Is anyone using iZotope Ozone 3 to master?
    Dual 1.8Ghz G5 PB G4 1Ghz LP7.1.1 Motu 896   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Reaktor 5.1 Reason 3.0.4 Live 5.0.2 Battery 2.1.1 Recycle 2.1 DFH 1.5.3

I wouldn't compare Ozone to Waves. If you're not a mastering engineer, Ozone will be one of the most powerful apps of its kind to get into. It's a great tool for mastering if you have no ear for mastering. I mean if you don't know what mastering is but have to do it Ozone is great for going in and checking the spectrum, adjusting the eq, multiband compressing to make sure those drums sound nice, adjusting the stereo field, adding a touch of reverb, a few low end harmonics. You'll really be surprised at the level you can take your work up to. But put it in front of a Mastering engineer and they'll laugh at how simple it is. This is more a reflection of the mastering process as a whole not the program. The program is amazing but it does not replace the skills and tools of professional mastering engineers.

  • Anyone using a D-link 524 wireless router??

anyone using a dlink 524 ? i can't get this thing to work .. any dlink users out there?

    I've got a 524.
With my original MBP Core Duo machine, the 10.4.9 update totally put me out of commission. I had to reinstall OSX to get back online. Patching up to 10.4.8 was fine, but wireless update 2007-002 is the one that breaks things.
But then the machine died... Which allowed me to discover that:
MBP Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz works flawlessly with the DI-524. No problems at all. The original MBP has a crappy wireless card.

  • Anyone using Norton's AV and SB Audigy 2 ZS?

I got the Audigy 2 ZS Gamer since it had $70 USD in rebates and instant savings. I got home and the installation failed ( and I did uninstall the old drivers and disable onboard sound). I had made a restore point prior to the installation, but decided to try again. Supposedly, the install worked, but it really didn't. I had sound through Windows media player and in a game but not in windows, and none of the creative troubleshooter showed several failures. Also, my NAV 2002 autodetect wouldn't load. Device Manager showed one item under sound with an exclamation mark. I then installed AVG so I would have an AV prog. Then I discovered that there were so many restore points that it wiped out the one I made. After sever installs/uninstalls, I tried to go back to the onborad sound and that wasn't working right either.
I bit the bullet, reformatted, and reinstalled windows. I also kept the onboard sound disabled and installed the Audigy 2 ZS sound card. It worked! I have not installed Media Source.
Is anyone using Norton's 2004 and the Audigy 2 ZS card and supporting software (not sure if I'll install mediasource)? I know that several people tout AVG, but I'm not so positive. They have not rated really well, consistantly, in the Virus Bulletin ( http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?avg.xml ). In fact, as far as their history, they have done poorly compared to Norton's and many others ( http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/p...ml?symantec.xml and http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?eset.xml as examples ). I was very surprised for I'd always heard good things about AVG. It did give me a false positive yesterday (hidden extension-took out the spaces, rescanned and it was clean). Remember, I'm asking about Norton's and Audigy 2.
Of course, any input about your experiences with norton's/Audigy 2 or whatever you're using will be most appreciated.
I posted this in Anything Under The Sun, but no one seems to be looking at it.  My appologies for double posting, but I really need to hear about people's experiences with this Sound Card/software and Antivirus software.

Which version of Norton's are you using?  My problem is with the 2002 version that is part of SystemWorks.
I haven't installed Mediasource, just the drivers (and updates) and the software for the audigy 2 ZS with the THX and EAX consoles updates (again, not mediasource).  Is it really worth having Mediasource installed?
Oh yeah, despite all the problems I had and having to reformat, NO buzz, hum, static now with microphone using this sound card.

  • Using Gimp or Gimpshop

Hi, I recently installed Mac Box Set with version OSX 10.6.5 on my Macbook Pro. Since then I cannot use My Photoshop 7.0 anymore. From other topics I learned that I was not the only and I had to install the free X11 and Gimp. Problem is that this is complete different and I don't know how it works and I cannot find users instructions. So I also installed Gimpshop because this should be more users friendly. But this refuses to open and crashes immediately. Can somebody help me with an easy and clear users manual for using Gimp and how can I solve the problem with Gimpshop ? Thanks for all help !

Agreed Gimp/Gimpshop has nothing to do with Photoshop other than the fact they are both photo editors.
"Gimpshop" has not been supported since OS X 10.4 the last stable release May 17, 2006.
You can read more of what Scott Moschella has to say here: http://ask.metafilter.com/144788/What-are-my-intellectual-property-rights-here
You can reference this site for *Snow Leopard* for workaround with Gimpshop. http://www.strayprocess.com/blog/gimpshop-snow-leopard
You will need to install X11 for Gimp... X11 is installed in the Applications folder. If not, to install X11 insert the Mac OS X installation disc and double-click the Optional Installs package. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8568.html
    Hope this solves your problem.

  • Anyone using Mountain Lion?

Anyone using the new OS with FCP X? What are you experiencing?
    Thanks!
    Scot

I can not imagine, you can not switch-off this 'feature' …  (???)
You can for now... but for how long? The distance between Lion and ML is just about 1 year. Who's to say whether in the next incarnation of OSX that option is completely dropped?
Quite frankly, if Apple locks everyone into the App Store for all installations, that's grounds for a lawsuit. That's actually WORSE than Internet Explorer on Windows was in the "browser wars."
I don't see the necessity for Gatekeeper otherwise. OSX is *virtually* immune to viruses. The only way to get infected is if *THE USER* (idiot who gets "talked" into doing so) actually INSTALLS it him or herself! Nothing can run from root unless express permission is given to do so -- i.e., the user actually supplies the password permission during installation allowing the malware/virus to be installed. The ONLY reason I can see for something like gatekeeper IS to lock everyone into a specific method of installing software on a machine...
If that happens, I don't see where there can ever again be free Mac software (maybe "adware") and Apple will have the final word on what you can or cannot  run on YOUR machine and who can or cannot develop software for distribution... and I'm really upset about it. Twitter feeds from people I follow has been strangely quiet about ML. I'm not getting any information, but I'm already thinking I'm probably going to have to fork over $99 to Apple for a certificate... and wondering if it's really worth it.
It really doesn't *pay* to be a "nice guy" -- but it's even worse if you HAVE TO PAY to be a nice guy!

I guess if you travel the iPhone is not the device to buy.
And which device to buy for travel? As far as I know other smartphone platforms even don't have an update facility like AppStore. And by the way what are your criteria for the perfect travel phone? I would place being able to use it in other countries (world phone), having easy access to internet and email and ability to remotely sync Contacts and Calendar on top of my list. All of which iPhone is capable like few other phones.
I'm sorry, John, but your statement seems like utter nonsense and is misleading for others. First being able to update apps doesn't cross my mind as a main functionality for travel. Second I was just travelling to SC and easily installed a new app from iPhone and updated an existing one. In your case I believe there's a mishap with AppStore. Probably you have a false update notification. Just compare versions of the apps you have with the versions of the same apps AppStore shows. I bet version are same. That's why it doesn't let you install.
If you want to sync your iPhone Contacts and Calendar (which seems more like a genuine travel requirement) you can do it via MobileMe or Yahoo and few other similar web services.

  • Anyone using durable topics with high data volumes?

We're evaluating JMS implementations, and our requirements call for durable subscribers, where subscribers can go down for several hours, while the MQ server accumulates a large number of messages.
Is anyone using Sun MQ in a similar scenario? How is it holding up?
Sun folks, do you know of production installations that use durable topics with high data volumes?
    thanks,
    -am

We are using a cluster of Suns JMS MQ 3.6 with durable message queues and persistent topics. In a 4 hour window each night we run over 20,000 messages through a queue. The cluster sits on two Windows servers, the producer client is on a AIX box and the consumer is running on a iSeries. Within the 20,000 messages are over 400,000 transactions. Each message can have many transactions. Yes, the iSeries client has gone down twice and the producer continued with the message queue pilling up, as it should. We just use the topic to send and receive command and status inquiries to the clients. So every thing works fine. We have only had a couple issues with a client locking and that maybe fixed with sp3, we are in the process of installing that. The only other issue we have had is that once in a while the producer tries to send an object message with to many transactions and it throws and JMS exceptions. So we put a cap on the size of the messages, if its over a set number of transactions it send each transaction as separately, otherwise it sends all the transactions in one object type (linked list of transactions) message. Compare the cost of this JMS system with Tibco or Sonic and youre looking at big savings.
