Anyone using InDesign to create directories?

I can not get InDesign to create a directory as I want it set up:
Sorted by County, Specialty then Name.  I tried data merge but the spacing gets all screwed up. I tried to import an XLM file but I get errors when I try to import it.
Would someone please give me a little XML file to try?  Just need a test file with three items; County, Specialty and name or anything you may have and I’ll change my InDesign file to accommodate.

I created a children's picture book using the ipad app, Book Creator. It was fairly easy and I also added interactive sound buttons. Designed the pages in Illustrator and Photoshop, transferred to my ipad and added into the app. Here is a link to Cutest Book Ever on iBooks: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/cutest-book-ever!/id550927129?mt=11&ign-mpt=uo% 3D4

Has anyone  used Audacity to create a Podcast on a PC and then make it available on itunes?  If you have used Audacity is it a good program to use? Any tips or suggestions?

Almost certainly. You can use any program which does what you want: the end product has to be an .mp3 or .m4a file. After that it's a question of making the feed, either writing it yourself or more likely using a program or online service.
Audacity is a useful program, and free, and you can certainly do the sort of things you need to make a podcast. I prefer Amadeus Pro, which costs $59.99 and has recently been updated with better multi-track facilities: I always fled that Audacity was awkward to use by comparison and occasionally flaky, but we're probably splitting hairs here: it would certainly be a good place to start.

  • Has anyone used Muse to create a static web page that gets translated into Joomla?

Has anyone used Muse to create a static web page (html and xml) that gets translated into a Joomla template?

Obviously I am out of my league. I am not a programer and I thought this would be something simple, but you guys are talking over my head.
I thought I could create a simple link to the Happy.rdp and it would run...but as mentioned, you can't do that.
What I have is a java script with a bunch of parameters (see below) that creates a pull-down menu. I was hoping I could list the names of the servers, click on the one I want to connect to, and I would get the log-in screen. That is my goal.
I have a "Happy.rdp" icon on my desktop and I click on that and the remote connection starts. I have opened "Happy.rpd" in notepad and it has all the parameters (such as the IP address and stuff) that allow me to connect.

  • Anyone using InDesign 5.5 animation for iBook development?

I am working on children's full page illustration stories of about 12 pages each. I am able to animate small elements (like illustrations of insects) across background illustrations using InDesign 5.5.
Everything looks good in the Anmation Preview screen within InDesign. The animations can export as Flash swf files and I have found a tedieous methodolgy of re-importing each back into the InDesign document, then exporting the whole document as a PDF where they are supposed to display the embeded animations. Anyone tried this method or found a better way to animate either a PDF or iBook from inDesign?

    Hi Jason,
AFAIR this warning was being issued when the same reference
to a composite PK object was used to find beans. Something like
    MyPK pk = new MyPK();
    for (int index = 0; index < counter; index++) {
    pk.setID(index);
    MyRemote remote = myHome.findByPrimaryKey(pk);
Generally it's good idea to have PK object immutable (no setters).
    Hope this helps.

  • Have you used InDesign to create educational curricula for the Common Cartridge web standard?

An InDesign user from an online user group asked about using InDesign for publishing educational curricula to the Common Cartridge web standard. Are you familiar with this? If so, do you have any insight about it? Thanks very much.

I will try changing the anti-alias, something I haven't always been paying attention to, THANKS.
It was a designer that I worked with a few years ago that said she did it in Illustrator. I think it was AI (I have the Master Suite but only use PS, DW and a tiny buit of flash (usually just, here we go again, editing text)) and yes, it was rasterization and not vector, I have them mixed up and not sure what the difference is...
But she swore by it and I'm fairly certain she was using CS4. I remember having to make small text changes but couldn't because they were images in the PSD file(s) she sent. They definitley looked better than the typed in ones I did later. In fact, I recall getting yelled at for just putting it up there just using the type tool; maybe not using the anti-alias tool was part of the reason but I remember her being very adamant about it...
    Thanks again RikRamsay!

  • Can I use Indesign to create an ePub for iPad with expandable images?

Hello everyone!  I'm creating a book for iBooks on the iPad.  It is a basic book that has short chapters of text with pictures. Reading Terry White's, the Adobe evangelist, blog I saw that his attempt with InDesign seemed straight forward, without a need for html skills (which I don't have.)  So I would make the investment in InDesign if it is suitable.
BUT! I would like to add an extra feature that I have seen in some iBooks: When  you double-tap an image the text disappears and the image expands and  fills the page. And when you double-tap the image again it goes back to  normal. Can this be done in InDesign? How?
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thank you!

Size your image so that the longest dimension is 1024 pixels.
Screen size of iPad is 1024 x 768.
In iBooks, when a user double-taps on an image, iBooks will open the image in full-screen view and scales the image to its largest dimension.
In normal book view, iBooks displays all images at their maximum size unless they're larger than the iBooks page, in which case they are displayed to the max width or height of the page (until double-tapped on).
You can constrain the image size in iBooks with certain HTML coding. (Unlike other epub display software and devices, iBooks ignores CSS height and width instructions unless you make specific use of a <div> tag.)

  • Does anyone use InDesign CC with Assets to work with a group of people using the same links?

We have a group of about 15 people who are all in different locations and we're looking at using CC Assets as our file sharing/storage system. Has anyone done this with success? We create large maps with a lot of links on them that we should want to all of those links to live in Assets instead of on 15 different computers.
Any help/suggestions you could give would be great.

Yeh you could do that - or you could get a dropbox account and install and login the same account on all computers.
Then you get notified of file changes and there will be backups generated automatically and files will be synced on all computers.
I'm not familiar with CC Assets - so I can't comment on it.

  • Has anyone used iPhoto to create and sell their high school's yearbook?

Seems like a much more cost efficient way then the companies that are out there.  I have worked as yearbook advisor a few years back and hated it.  It was expensive, software was not user friendly, and always ran at a loss.  I was approached this year to do it and politely said no, but then I thought maybe iPhoto is the solution.  Just wondering if it's been done and if there are any "samples" out there.  Thanks for any input!

Probably someone has - but they are not likely to be on this forum
    I see a few issues
1 - cost per book is high
2 - layouts are limited although you probably can live with that if you want to
3 - you are limited to 100 pages - depending on your schoold that could be a problem
4 - paper is glossy and may be hard to write on
For an overview of layouts available Liz Castro did a great web site for iPhoto '09 - iPhoto '11 is pretty much a superset of these so it gives you some idea of that is available - http://www.iphotobookthemes.com/pmwiki.php?n=Main.HomePage  --  as far as I know there is no similer site for iPhoto '11

  • Creating Murals Using InDesign CS6

We often use InDesign for creating seamless multi-panel murals, i.e. a 6 panel flow wall where each panel could be considered a 'tile' (like tiles in a RIP), suppose 40" x 96" each done at 25% scale.
The problem arises when using a spread where either pages are different sizes or when resizing all pages, viz: either an undesirable gap or overlap is created between panels.
We prefer using InDesign for this because there may fifty=plus logos or other images placed thereupon, and using Illustrator would become tedious.
    What solutions are there?
    Thanks!

As i understand, if your panels at the same height you can create a new document with 6 page with the  size scaled to 25%, then on page panel: unckeck AllowDocumet Pages to Shuffle. Drag the pages to be side to side, and that make the total width of you mural
When you export to pdf, on general tab check on all pages & spreads

  • Use Captivate to create PDF Manuals

We have been research "single-source authoring" solutions, such as Datango, uPerform, STT Trainer, UPK, etc.  They promote the ability to capture screenshots and generate Job Aids, Videos, Sims, and EPSS resources with a single click.
My Q - Has anyone used Captivate to create handouts / job aids?  I played around with a few of the Print publishing outputs, and I don't think we can use them.
If you have used it, it would be very helpful to see an example of a job aid that you created.
Until I find a way to do it, I'm taking one of the print publish outputs and significantly modifying them to look like our current quick reference guides.
    Thanks!

    I'm not sure they are.
Captivate allows you to record what is happening. For example, perhaps you are describing how to open Windows Character Map. You Start Captivate, define your recording area and set about opeingin Windows Character Map. Then you stop recording. Captivate will have captured the screens that were involved. You would see a screen of the desktop with the mouse moving to the Start button. Another screen where the Start button is clicked. Another screen where the mouse moves to the Run command and clicks. Another screen where you see charmap being typed into the field and Enter is pressed to launch the application. That would be the Captivate project. You would thien tell Captivate you wanted to create a SWF of that.
With RoboHelp, you create HTML pages which are known as Topics. And you might also describe the same process of opening Character Map in one or more topics. Much like Word, you would type information in and capture screen shots. (Possibly using RoboScreen Capture if you like). But each screen capture would need to still be inserted into the topic(s). No way around that, I'm afraid.
I'm unfamiliar with how Frame works. To me it's bewildering. So I'd have to leave it to others to describe that to you. But I do believe it works in a similar manner to RoboHelp, in that you type your information into it. Frame simply handles very large documents more easily. It also stores and arranges the content differently.
Hopefully I've helped more than hindered here... Rick

  • Using Pages to create iBooks or magazine for newsstand...

Has anyone used Pages to create for iBooks or created a magazine for the newsstand?
I realize there is iBooks Author, but it seems restrictive in that it's only sold in iBookstore.  I'm not specifically interested in creating publications that must be sold, but I'm curious if people are using Pages to create this kind of content.  If not, what are you using to create iBooks?

  • Should i use flash to create/edit an swf interactive online book?

Hello I'm new to Flash; as Indesign limits what I can do in terms of sound for interactive swfs (specifically I need an mp3 player/controller that would allow a reader to control a number of sound files from any page of the swf), would flash be a suitable program for creating such a book? The aim is to upload the final swf to a website for viewing online.

Just a follow up if you don't mind... My main issue is with an mp3 file I placed in indesign, opting for a floating controller; the problem is that the controller is huge and the file stops playing on page turn, and I can't change either of these things from indesign. Can I make these changes in flash or flash builder while preserving the swf document as it is? Or should I restart the project from within flash? Ideally I'd like to use indesign to create ebooks with interactive audio, and edit them in flash to give them an interactive transcript feature that indesign can't do. Is this a reasonable workflow?

  • Will my version of OSX affect opening an InDesign document created with a newer version of OSX?

Can anyone using InDesign CC tell me if someone using a new version of OSX will prevent you from opening their file? I have my CC products updated and have had a few issues opening some documents....assuming the problem is with my OSX version???

ID files are not backward compatible (though the latest releases of CC, subscription versions of CS6 now use a cloud service to transparently make a .idml file that will open automatically when you try to open a file from a newer version). OS should not be a factor unless you upgrade the OS after installing the applications, then ID can get finicky.
