Anyone using Mac Mini as a DAW with Logic?

Hello Applers',
I am currently using an imac as my DAW ith Logic Pro 9. I am wondering if anyone is using a mini with logic and how does it perform. The one thing that worries me is the 5400 RPM drive and I fear that the Solid State drive, even dualed would not offer enough storage space for the Long Haul as I currently have over a TB filled and an external TB drive 70% full with older files on my Imac. Just looking for opinions here and thanks!

  • Anyone using Cakewalk/Roland A800-pro controller with Logic?

I'm looking to buy an extra keyboard besides my Fantom X8 to use onstage and trigger sounds from the Fantom. So it has to have a classic MIDI-out and a nice keybed. The A800-pro seems the right board to do that.
But when at home I want to use it with Logic also. The A800-pro has the ACT system of Sonar integrated, but I don't use Sonar, I use Logic on a Macbook Pro (wich maybe will be taken onstage too).
Is anyone using the Cakewalk A-pro series with a Mac? How does it function as a controller? Or what other board do you recommend instead? Does it funtion well with mainstage?
    Thanks in advance, Wilmar

Thank you both for your input. I am back on the case again, this time with a fully functioning FCB1010. Right ou of the box the pedal does successfully send volume and pan with expression pedal a and b respectively.
What I would next like to accomplish is to have exp. ped. b now control a plug-in parameter instead, the pedal range on the fuzz-wah plug-in of Logic Pro 7 for expample.
When I use Automation Quick Access to edit the assignment of ped. b as Bryan suggested, Logic appears to be receiving the info from ped. b and creating the new assignment (as indicated in the Controller Assignments window), and yet the actual functionality doesn't change, that is, ped. b continues to control pan.
    Any suggestions?

  • Please help! We got a used Mac Mini and we don't have the former owner's password, so we can't install anything like flash player.  Does anyone know how to get around this?

Please help! We got a used Mac Mini and we don't have the former owner's password, so we can't install anything like flash player.  Does anyone know how to get around this? I don't know how to wipe the hard drive, and the support online doesn't seem to work.

    As posted previously:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
If installing Leopard the process is similar in some respects.  If you wish to begin anew then after selecting the target disk click on the Options button and select the Erase and Install option then click on the OK button.  To install over an existing system do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Anyone using a Yamakasi Catleap 2703 Monitor with a Retina Mac Book Pro?

    Hi,
Anyone using a Yamakasi Catleap 2703 Monitor with a Retina Mac Book Pro?  If so, is it working well and would you do it again?  Is it compatible with the Apple dual DVI cable?
    Thanks,
    Alan

I just got a Yamakasi precision 2703.  I'm using it with a 13" macbook pro (non retina).  I got it working with a thunderbolt / minidisplayport to dual link DVI adapter from monoprice for $~70.  At first I didn't think it was going to work, plugged it in, turned on the display, nothing happened.  I unplugged, plugged the USB cable back in and the monitor came to life.  Working great so far.  I bought mine from green-sum on ebay.  The recommend not using this monitor with apple computers due to overheating issues... I don't see why that would be the case, though.  I've only been running it for a couple days, but so far no issues, and I've been happy with the monitor, no dead pixels, no bleed in the corners.
The monitor stand on the 2703 isn't too bad, a little wobbly but not as bad as the others from what I've read.  The monitor does sit a little low, though.  I have a much sturdier stand coming from monoprice for $20+shipping, which will provide tons of adjustment, both height and rotation.
    Good luck!

  • Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Are you actually having a problem with the new Lacie drive, or are you just asking is the Lacie drive somehow different from your old G-Drive?
From a connection standpoint, most Lacie desktop drives have both USB and FireWire connections, just like the G-Drives do.  You would connect and use it the same as a G-Drive.
Regarding capturing to the external HD, if you are using a camcorder that has FireWire (iLink) connection, it is not advisable to have an external FireWire HD connected to your Mac at the same time as your camcorder; there are often communication conflicts between the camcorder and the hard drive if they are connected at the same time.  The conflicts usually appear as either dropped frames or a complete freeze.   This is more common with Canon miniDV camcorders but I have also seen this behavior with Sony miniDV camcorders.  (The problem is the camcorder's FW implementation, not the hard drive.)  The workaround is to capture to your Mac's internal HD and later copy the captured video to your external HD.

  • Using mac mini in line with a PC

I was thinking of buying a mini Mac for my 83 yo mother who currently uses a PC. Knowing that she likely would not like to just get rid of her PC for an OS she's totally unfamiliar with, I thought I might get her a Mini Mac. However, space in her home is limited so I was trying to learn if there was a way that the Mini Mac could be used in a "shared" fashion with her existing PC. In other words, someway to use it without having to physically transferring her keyboard, mouse and monitor connections each time she were to use one or the other system.
    Thanks

What you're looking for is a "kvm switch." This thing let's you share a keyboard, mouse and monitor between 2 systems. I'd checkout some site like newegg to see what people are buying to get an idea of what features to look for.
Does your mom's pc use a "ps/2" connection (round plug) for either the mouse or keyboard? If it does you might want to get a kvm that has "ps/2" connections.
If both the keyboard and mouse use usb plugs then I'd get a kvm with usb connections.
I'm doing the same thing and I got a usb kvm with vga for video. I'll need to get a "mini-dvi to vga" adapter for the mac mini though. The adapter that comes with the mac mini doesn't work with a "vga to dvi" adapter. I also should have picked a kvm with audio support so I can share the speakers too.
You can save yourself the cost of the adapter by connecting the pc to the vga port and connect the mac to the dvi port on the monitor, but that means having to press another button on the monitor to switch input modes =P

The version of Pages is the most useful extra information, it hardly matters what Mac you are using.

The line could possibly be an underline or a paragraph border or a line which is a separate object underneath the rest of the text.
Probably it is a paragraph border.

There are several possible ways, some depend on the type of Cable TV system you have. First I am going to assume you are an American. While Cable TV is available in other countries, for example here in the UK, it ***** so bad in the UK that you are unlikely to be using it here.
Now, with American Cable the first possible method has already been mentioned by others which is to use an analogue connection from your cable box to an Elgato EyeTV 250 (possibly discontinued). This is an analogue tuner for a Mac and will let your Mac record the signal. There is also the more expensive EyeTV 250Plus which includes a chip to do the conversion to MPEG2 and take the load off your Mac. This method will work whether your Cable box is analogue or digital.
If your Cable box uses "Clear QAM" then you could get the HDHomeRun box from Elgato. This not only will provide a direct digital signal with no loss of quality, but will also provide two tuners, and can be shared across your home network. There is also the EyeTV 500 see http://www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyetv500 but this also may have been discontinued.
Finally, if your Cable box has a FireWire connection (and by law they have to give you the option of this) then you can connect the box via FireWire to your Mac and run software on your Mac. Again this will be a direct digital capture with no loss of quality. See the following two pages for information on how to do this.
    http://www.ammesset.com/irecord/
    http://project-tigershark.com/people/rob/blog/2007/01/14/cable-tv-mac-firewire-h d-pvr/
Note: I am in the UK and have no direct experience of any of the above, and can only gnash my teeth in frustration at how spoilt for choice US TV/Mac users are compared to the pathetic massively DRMed situation here in the UK.

  • Mac Mini Server Airport Express with Server Firewall Settings

I posted this in the Server forum, but I've had no responses so far - so I'll try it here instead! Any help is appreciated...
I've got a new Mac Mini Server (mid 2010) with Snow Leopard Server v10.6 that I intend to use as a file server in the long term, and as my main computer replacing my old PC in the short term.
One of it's uses will be my iTunes server for my Airtunes network with two airport expresses.
When I disable the server firewall iTunes can connect to the airports with the check box in the 'multiple speakers' menu in iTunes. If I enable the firewall with the default settings of 'allow these ports' I cannot. I have used the Apple document on well known TCP and UDP ports to open for Apple software packages with particular attention to streaming audio / iTunes etc. Still doesn't allow the speakers to be selected in the 'multiple speakers' check box.
I also tried the 'allow all traffic' option for the firewall, again no connection to the remote speakers happened. If I turn off the firewall it all works fine. It seems that there are some ports that need to be open in order to establish the connection - I just don't know what they are.
Does anyone know of the appropriate ports to open? I tried searching the forums and I did try some of the suggestions for port 5000, 6000, 6001 etc but it doesn't make any difference!
    Thanks in advance...

I found this works too. Though I came about this a slightly different way.
I moved over to Airfoil as Airtunes didn't work without the firewall and Airfoil did. I then had problems with Airfoil not reconnecting to the remote speakers when you cycled the power on them, I don't want all of my remote speakers powered all of the time. They were set to automatically connect, yet they refused connection a couple of times before connecting, which meant logging into the mini and reconnecting manually, which wasn't what I wanted to do. During an email conversation with Rogue Amoeba I sent them a debug logfile - they pin-pointed it as a connection denial with IPv6 addressing.
Once I had that info, I disabled IPv6 for my network adaptors and Airfoil worked and reconnected fine even when airport expresses are power cycled. I then tried Airtunes again and now the speakers can be connected. It's down to the first choice for connections is IPv6, if this is not available it's IPv4.
It's definitely a bug with the IP6FW control and link-local traffic.
    Hope this helps.

  • My Adobe Flash CS6 Color Picker has ODD colors. I'm using Mac Mini OSX 10.8.1. Is there a fix?

My Adobe Flash CS6 Color Picker has ODD colors. I'm using Mac Mini OSX 10.8.1. Is there a fix?
I click on the color picker and where I have seen the normal #0000ff blue color on my windows computer, this mac Mountain lion version shows a purple-ish color. Oddly, If I enter the hex # into the color picker, and use it as a fill, the correct color displays on the stage but when i use the eyedropper on that color, it shows it as the purple color again on the toolbar.
I've seen a similar thing like this happen when using adobe photoshop. However, the usual solution is to just make the managed color profile set to monitor RGB. The only downside with Flash is there is no preference to set that. The color palette in Adobe Photoshop displays as it should with the correct blue.
I should also note that I'm using a Samsung 941bw monitor with my mac mini which could also be part of the problem.
I figured i'd make this post anyway just in case it's the OS & Adobe Flash CS6 and not the monitor.
I've included a screenshot as well that shows that i've chosen the purple color and then made a rectangle shape on the stage and it comes out blue.
    Thanks ahead for your response(s)
