Anyone Using on of these for storage ?

I am looking at this docking station for 2.5 and 3.5 harddisk.  It has the capability to swap out different drives.  The interface can be USB 2.0 & 3.0 as well as fire wire and estate.  Buying bare dad drives seems to be far cheaper than a desk top version for the same capacity.
I have not inserted a link on here before I hope it works.

Any feedback would be appreciated.
Tom

I use two Thermaltake BlacX docking stations which are similar to the units you are looking at. Never had any problems with them. I use them both for day to day storage and for backup.
Bare drives are ridiculously inexpensive now with 1tb well under $100 and 2tb  approaching that (actually right now at newegg you can get a WD green 2tb drive for $75, not the fastest but good enough for backups) and 3tb around $150 - $175.
It is amazing.

  • Has anyone used ROXIO TOAST II for burning DVD

    Has anyone used ROXIO TOAST II for setting up intro and burning to DVD. I used to do this in IDVD which has been abandoned in the Maverick

    Just to say that that I've tested iDVD on 10.9 and it works for me. It's a discontinued program of course, and hasn't been supported for several years, but I don't think it runs any differently on 10.9 than it did on say, 10.6.
    However…can't help you with Toast because I don't use it.

  • New install on MacBook but I want to use external hard drive for storage. How?

    Hi folks.
    I just bought and installed Lightroom on My MacBook, it has a tiny HD and I was hoping to use an External HD for storage of photos.
    Is there a trick to setting up the external HD for storage?
    Should I of put the catalogue on there rather than the Mac HD?
    thanks for any help.

    Yea I'm just going to wait for a solution I like better. The easiest way would be for apple to have some kind of itunes server software. Theres no reason that my computer running itunes shouldn't be able to communicate with with hard drive wirelessly just as it would with a usb cable. Kind of like wireless itunes synching with my iphone.
    I don't want to use Itunes match because music is not my concern. It is the 1,000 movies that I want to watch on apple tv without tying up my laptop.
    Thanks anyway

  • Can i use the time capsule for storage or just backup?

    I asked my husband to go and buy a separate harddrive so that we could use to store all of our photos on separately as opposed to the computer (as its full and we cant download any more photos!). He came back with the Time Capsule.
    from what i can understand it can only be used for backups and not for direct stoarge - is this correct? Im hoping that i can use it for storage and somehow copy all my photos from my Mac onto the Time Capsule and then we can access them from the network which i just created with the Time Capsule
    Or do i need to buy something else?
    appreciate anyones help
    Thanks

    It is far from ideal. But it does depend on what you are doing. Are you going to store you iphoto library on the TC then it is not recommended.
    Store files on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
    This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
    The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.

  • Anyone using one of these processor upgrades?

    Is anyone using this processor upgrade from Other World Computing?Its this one:
    Motorola/Freescale PowerPC G4/7447A Processor running at 1.6GHz
    # 512K of 1:1 L2 Cache @ 1.6GHz
    # 100MHz or 133MHz bus operation
    # Bus Ratio of up to 16:1
    I have just recieved a Quicksilver 733(was supposed to be a dual 800,but it was defective),and I would like to max it out without spending nearly $400.00US for one of the 7448's.Is this worth $200.00US?Will I notice performance close to my dual 1.25 MDD?Or is this just a waste of money?Any info at all on this upgrade would be very appreciated,thanks!

    Well,duh,I should have just looked at your sig japamac! I forgot you were running one of these,nice to know its reliable.Good to know it will keep up with my current computer as well.Thanks BDAqua as I actually wanted to know if it would at least be better than the dual 800 I didnt get.Dont mind spending the cash,just dont want it to get out of hand if its just a small increase in performance.This will be paired with a 9800pro and sata Hitachi 1TB upgrades,so this shouldnt be a slowpoke with Leopard.And of course I maxed the ram out.Again thanks for the info(and FAST!!)!

  • Anyone Using An SSD Drive for Audio Yet?

    Been thinking about one of these for my record drive, since a very small one would work for me (as I'm only working on a few songs at any given moment and have plenty of other space to store things). It's between this and getting a V Raptor drive but I love the idea of no moving parts...
    Any input appreciated..

    For audio recording, the concern is that SSDs have a lower number of write cycles than traditional hard drives. It's hard to know with such a new category of product, but they may fail faster in a situation where they are being written over and over very often.
    This is a much bigger issue for system disks than for audio recording. Audio deals with relatively large files, and once they're written, they generally stay there until the project is dumped off-disk.
    The system, on the other hand, constantly reads/writes/re-writes tiny blocks of data all over the place - which is also why random read/write rates are EVERYTHING in performance, and sequential read/write speeds, while certainly impressive, are pretty much irrelevant in actual use.
    Also, all SSDs use a kind of "load balancing" to make sure that writes are evenly distributed across the entire memory, resulting in lifespans far beyond anything you'd reasonably expect off a mechanical hard drive.

  • Has anyone used a Pinnacle TV for Mac HD Stick

    Hi,
    I was looking into this product and was thinking about getting it for my powerbook G4 1.67 Ghz. I know it came out about 2008 and is now discontinued but all new TV viewer programs require an Intel mac. With this one you can use a G4/G5 and Intel.
    Mark

    If not the Pinnacle TV for Mac HD Stick how about anyone using the Elgato Systems EyeTV Hybrid? It has the same system requirements for viewing HDTV as does the Pinnacle unit. Anyone get HDTV with one of those on a MDD G4?

  • Has anyone used a Quardro 4000 for 10-bit output to a monitor

    Hey Gang,
    I'm trying to set something up that uses a quadro 4000 for outputting my source and program monitors while I'm using them to an external monitor.  I have a Flanders LM-2461W.  I also have a black magic Decklink Extreme 3d, but I'm not at all happy with it's peformance with r3d files.  I mostly work with red footage, and I can't view any of my material on my external monitors.  I need to output like a 1080 signal from my 4k files.  My old Kona card did this beautifully, but for some reason, this black magic card seems to fall short.  I really want to keep the black magic for use with Resolve though.  I need to monitor resolve on my flanders.  I've heard of people using the display port on a Quadro 4000 to output out of premiere, and I'm curious if anyone has done with with r3d footage.

    I've got a new Mac Mini running HDMI to a 40" Sony Bravia Flat Panel... works fine.
    I do have an issue when I turn on the TV and wake the Mini from sleep... the screen stays really dim. Not sure if it's the Mini or the TV that's the issue. After the Mini is fully on... a power cycle of the TV seems to bring everything back to normal.
    Brett, I have the same problem when I bring the mac out of sleep mode. Have you managed to find out why we have to switch the TV Off then On again to get the picture? Or another solution? Very annoying when you have 1000's $ worth of equipment but the solution is still "Have you tried switching it Off and On again" (All due respects to the "IT CROWD").

  • Has anyone used the appscript modual for python rather than streight AS?

    I just discovered appscript and so far I like what I see. has anyone used it?
    Does it just wrap around actual applescript commands which it then sends to osascript with a system call or does it use the message system directly? Is there anything that it has not yet implemented that might cause problems?
    To me it seems to be a perfect solution to the clutter that AS seems to be... at least from someone coming from more traditional languages.

    In startMovie, you need to register the xtra
    on startMovie
    axRegister(serial code here)
    end
    Then, on your Record Button, something like this:
    on mouseUp me
    --start recording session - using 400k as maximum here
    errOpen=axOpenRecorder(400000)
    --see if there is an error
    put errOpen
    --save the new audio as a file
    errRecord=axRecordSoundToFile("soundName","c:\path\to\soundfile.wav")
    --see if there is an error
    put errRecord
    end
    then make sure you close the recorder in stopMovie
    on stopMovie
    axCloseRecorder()
    end
    You can also make a Stop Recording button that has code like
    this:
    on mouseUp me
    errStop=axStopRecording()
    put errStop
    end

  • Has anyone used any of these programs to create a floor plan for a retail store?

    When they sold me the package they said Ai would work well, I have looked at it but can't seem to find any templates to use..

    I use a CAD program that was designed to work with Ai for years- Hot Door. It is an architectural plugin (I guess you would consider it a plugin). It works great but a little pricey- well worth the price if you do this a lot. Hot Door

  • Anyone using Jspell in Forms for spell checking?

    I have this working in our application using the jspellintegration.pll code from OTN.
    It is OK if the field to be checked is on the 'root' canvas, but not if the field is on a popup window (dialog window) canvas. I register the field in WNFI trigger as per code sample, but Form crashes when I set the dictionary type (jspell.setdictionarytype).
    I have raised a TAR but been told that code samples from OTN are not supported!
    Has anyone got jspell working on fields on a popup canvas?
    Any help much appreciated!
    Regards, Adrian.

    Adrian,
    I don't know if this applies but I've had trouble getting the ImageButtonComplete PJC to work on popup canvases. This PJC puts an icon and text on a push button. We experience a crash when setting the icon for these PJC buttons on a popup canvas - works great normally.
    We finally had to set the icon for this PJC in a timer. I know this is not a recommended course of action but everything else fails. I tried doing sleep loops of varying length but the timer was the only mechanism that didn't crash.
    Try creating a timer (hope I'm insulting you with an example) where you have been doing your PJC set
    declare
    TM_ID TIMER;
    begin
    TM_ID:=CREATE_TIMER('ADRIAN_TIMER',1,NO_REPEAT);
    end;
    Then in a when-timer-expired trigger at the form level
    if GET_APPLICATION_PROPERTY(TIMER_NAME)='ADRIAN_TIMER' then
    do your PJC stuff
    I'm certain it is superb advice to avoid timers but you might try just to see if it works.

  • Anyone using Dojo or DWR for Ajax/Web 2.0?

    Hi all,
    I am looking for more sophisticated web pages than the ones delivered with standard MII V12.  I am quite interested in DWR for transport and Dojo for widgets.  Is anyone out there using either/both of these?
    Thanks,
    --Amy Smith

    I don't see why you'd want to introduce an extra layer with DWR, but you should be able use DOJO with the "REST-ful" services (e.g. URL calls returning XML) that MII provides.
    Personally, I think Adobe AIR or Silverlight can/will create the most compelling user interfaces for MII and for other web-centric and/or occasionally connected applications.

  • Anyone use Flex with php for file upload? PHP Notice:  Undefined index:  Filedata

    My code works. It uploads the file and inputs the file name into a database, but I can't shake this php notice. I think php is looking for multipart/form-data from the HTML form tag.
    <form action="upload.php"  enctype="multipart/form-data"/>
    But I am using flex. The multipart/form-data info is sent as the second default argument of the upload() function. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks.
    PHP Notice:  Undefined index:  Filedata
    $filename = $_FILES['Filedata']['name'];
    public function selectHandler(event:Event):void {
                    request = new URLRequest(UPLOAD_DIR);
                    try {
                        fileRef.upload(request);
                        textarea1.text = "Uploading " + fileRef.name + "...";
                    catch (error:Error) {
                        trace("Unable to upload file.");
                        textarea1.text += "\nUnable to upload file.";

    Hi, Thanks for your reply !
    Im not getting any errors Flex side, as i say i get a alert message saying the file has been uploaded so . .
    I am using a Wamp server on a windows machine, how do i check the file permissions on both the folder and the php file ?
    Also how do i debug a php file ?
    ANy help would be thankful !
