Anyone with a clear workflow of what to do with projects after burned DVD

Question

I am in dire need of help.
I've completed a project using FCE-export to iMovie-shared over to iDVD-and burned on a DVD
I want to keep the project in case the client wants another copy, or even to make changes.
I tried to start another project, but it said low disc space.
I then bought a Seagate external drive 160gb to try and transfer files over, but at this point, I've moved things over that I wasn't really sure should be moved.
I have a Mac OS X version 10.4.10 -Processor: 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo-Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM - startup disk Macintosh HD

**What happened to the Auto Saves?**
*The Autosave Vault is still here, but as I try and open the most recent file, another popup says 'Missing Disks' -To preserve the integrity of the data used by Final Cut Express HD, its necessary to ensure the existence of the following paths:---'Unknown' is offline (is whats in the box)*
**Are there OFF-LINE clips in the Timeline (if openable)?**
*I can't open the FCE projects at this moment.*
**What format is the external?**
*It was someone else who suggested below:*
*-Go into Disk Utility*
*-Select the disk*
*-Make sure all your files are off the drive before you do this:*
*-Change Format to Mac OS Extended.*
*The files that were on the external, I trashed, I thought since I dragged it there initially from the startup disk, it was a copy. As I did the above suggestion, right now, I can't see the external anywhere, but yet its plugged to the MacBook Pro.*
**It's important to know the difference between a Project, Scratch Disc and a project file.**
**Where is the project file located - internal or external?**
*It was external and internal, but after the suggestion of another person, I trashed all files in the external, and now its only the INTERNAL.*
*The project file is located under project files that I created under DOCUMENTS, but as I try the FCE project files, it says the same pop up as above 'Missing Disks'*
*As I try and open the project's iDVD project file, the pop up is 'Missing Files.'*
