Anyone with a dual core using AOL?

To anyone using AOL, are you able to access secure web pages using AOL's built-in web browser? On the new dual core G5, every secure web page is inaccessible. (Works fine on any other computer). Note, this is through tcp/ip and not dial up.

I just logged onto my Credit Cards site and made a secure payment through AOL without any problem at all.
Thats with the factory installed Tiger. AOL 10.3.7 over TCP/IP through my Comcast broadband.
I did have one problem with my DC, I couldn't install the Student Edition of MS Office. Tried installing with a new user, in safe boot mode, it just would not do it. Works fine on my mini and powerbook so it's not the cd, tried it with an external DVD/CD writer still wouldn't work. I finally had to copy the install over from my powerbook and it's been working fine. Go figure. My conclusion was it must be something in the installer.

Should I go with a dual core or quad core MacBook?

Hi all,
I am going to be a college student this fall majoring in a science related field. My first question is what processor I should go with. I am looking at either a 13" MBP with a dual core i7 and 8 GB of RAM (750GB HD), 13" MBP w/ a dual core i5, 8GB RAM and 500GB HD, or a 15" quad core i7 with 8GB RAM and 500 GB HD. I plan on upgrading to a SSD once prices come down in a few years and would like to stick with the MBP without Retina Display so that I can upgrade RAM and HD later on.
Will I see a noticeable difference between dual core i5 and i7? From what I have seen, it has not been much of a difference. I only plan to do light Photoshop and doubt I will do any video editing or even 3D modelling for the most part. This will mainly be used for research (web), streaming, and Office. I know that the i5 is more than capable of all of that, but I am looking to make this machine last 4+ years at least. That is why I am considering jumping up to the 15" MBP just to get the quad core and ensure that I will have a longer lasting machine.
Most of the time the laptop will be travelling around, but I will also be plugging this into a Thunderbolt Display for more screen space.
Let me know what you all think! Right now, I am leaning towards the 13" MBP with dual core i7, but this is subject to change. Will it last throughout college?

Yes, but more RAM isn't a cure all, processors and graphics also has to be powerful to last longer.
RAM allows one to do more things at the same time, and gives a performance boot with programs with larger files it's working on (like large Photoshop and video files)
Plus, would upgrading the HD to SSD help in making the jump to say OS X 10.11, 10.12 down the road easier?
Not that much really, with the non-Retina 15" you can put in a 1TB SSD when the prices come down further

It would be nice to save a little on the screen size since I won't be able to utilize the 15" to its maximum potential when I'm working at my desk.
Your on the wrong platform if your looking to save money.
If you compare specs and performance of the hardware Apple offers for sale and equivilent i5/dual cores with Intel HD graphics, you'll find for $1500 buys a Mac and for $400 buys the same in a Windows PC.
Really the best value comes with the 15" as if your in that pro market for such a machine you might as well get OS X with it as PC's cost about the same in that range.
The really best value is a Windows 7 tower, that way it's parts are all upgradable and can last a decade or more on one Widnows OS version.
Several of my friends think I'm crazy spending $10,000 on Mac's in 10 years, they are still on their XP towers and haven't paid much more than $2000 over that same time.
Of course now XP is dead and they have to upgrade to Windows 7 towers, but they really get good value out of their boxes.
Mac's are not for those tight on a budget, I don't advise. A Windows machine will do the job for most people

Why is it that the new Macbook Pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz boosting to 3.3 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz boosting to 3.6 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned somehow to go much faster anyway, or will the new one be slower in fact? Or does the solid state drive compensate for the lack of increased processor capacity?

The CPU's come from different Intel 'families'. The older ones are 'Ivy Bridge' and the newer ones are 'Haswell'. Numbers alone will not determine the efficiency of CPU.

DSC 8.6.1 wrong timestamps for logged data with Intel dual core

Problem Description :
Our LV/DCS 8.6.1 application uses shared variables to log data to Citadel. It is running on many similar computers at many companies just fine, but on one particular Intel Dual Core computer, the data in the Citadel db has strange shifting timestamps. Changing bios to startup using single cpu fixes the problem. Could possibly set only certain NI process(es) to single-cpu instead (but which?). The old DSCEngine.exe in LV/DSC 7 had to be run single-cpu... hadn't these kind of issues been fixed by LV 8.6.1 yet?? What about LV 2009, anybody know?? Or is it a problem in the OS or hardware, below the NI line??

(Nothing else installed; OS and LV/DSC were re-installed to try to fix the problem, no luck)
Details:
A test logged data at 1 Hz, with these results: for 10-30 seconds or so, the timestamps were correct. Then, the timestamps were compressed/shifted, with multiple points each second. At perfectly regular 1-minute intervals, the timestamps would be correct again. This pattern repeats, and when the data is graphed, it looks like regular 1-sec interval points, then more dense points, then no points until the next minute (not ON the minute, e.g.12:35:00, but after a minute, e.g.12:35:24, 12:36:24, 12:37:24...). Occasionally (but rarely), restarting the PC would produce accurate timestamps for several minutes running, but then the pattern would reappear in the middle of logging, no changes made.
Test info:
- shared variable configured with logging enabled
- data changing by much more than the deadband
- new value written by Datasocket Write at a steady 1 Hz
- historic data retrieved by Read Traces
- Distributed System Manager shows correct and changing values continuously as they are written

It sounds like you are experiencing Time Stamp Counter (TSC) Drift as mentioned in the KB's for the AMD Multi-Core processors. However, according to this wikipedia article on TSC's, the Intel Core 2 Duo's "time-stamp counter increments at a constant rate.......Constant TSC behavior ensures that the duration of each clock tick is
uniform and supports the use of the TSC as a wall clock timer even if
the processor core changes frequency." This seems to suggest that it would be not be the case that you are seeing the issue mentioned in the KBs.
Can you provide the exact modle of the Core 2 Duo processor that you are using?

A suggestion for those with freezing dual-core 2.3 G5s (and maybe others)

I'm on my second dual-core 2.3 that's showing the random instability that many others are describing on the boards. To summarize:
- The kernel panic screen usually (but not always) appears.
- Within 10-20 seconds of the crash, fans come on full bore.
- Nothing of substance is recorded in the logs (at least not that I've found).
- Problem occurs with stock RAM as well as 3rd party modules.
- Crashes usually occur soon after a period of steady processor activity (playing large QuickTime movies, transferring files over the network, etc.)
- Problem exists under both 10.4.3 and 10.4.4.
- Apple's hardware test reports everything's fine.
- I've never been able to keep the machines up for longer than 3 days.
So I decided to give something a try that I happened to see in one of the many posts on the topic. In the Energy Saver pane, I've set Processor Performance from Automatic to Highest. And guess what? I've been doing all the same stuff I've always done, and haven't crashed for 6 days!
Just curious if others with similar symptoms have success with this...

I've been using my PM dual core 2.3 GHz hard since November with nary a problem. I usually keep the Energy option at Automatic, unless I'm going to be running heavy-CPU database processes, when I set the CPU to Highest.
And I do watch movies fairly often on the 2.3.
I always use Software Update for OS and Security updates. I've been updating my Macs for years this way, and haven't seen a kernel panic since OS X 1.0. Permissions repair is always run before and after updates.
Cocktail and DiskWarrior are run periodically for maintenance. I probably run Cocktail every week or so, and DiskWarrior every few weeks just as preventive measures.
Knock on wood, this has been a very stable computer.

Does the new iPod touch with iOS5 come with the dual core A5 processor?

If the new iPhone 4s is able to pack a dual core A5 processor into the phone, shouldn't the iPod be able to? I wanna buy a new iPod cause mine crashes a lot but I'm not sure I want another one with just a single core processor...Did Apple announce anything at the keynote about this or something? From the information provided by Apple, the only differences between the new iPod Touch and the 4G released last year is the lower price and the addition of a white color.

Can Lion be installed on an iMac with a Dual Core processor?

I have an older iMac, model iMac4,1 with an Intel 2.0 GHz Core Duo Processor, 2 GBytes of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. It is currently running Mac OS X version 10.6.8 and works very well.
I've seen conflicting information about the system requirements for upgrading to Lion. One spec says it must be a Core 2 Duo Processor. I want to see if I'm asking for trouble to try the upgrade. System is fully backed up with Time Machine.

Thanks Allan, for the quick and short answer. I've been reading other posts (should have done that first) and there are good reasons why it won't work. Best one is that the Core Duo is a 32 bit processor while the later ones are all 64 bit processors. Some have actually upgraded to the Core 2 Duo, but have not been successful in installing Lion on the internal drive.
I have a MacBook Pro running Lion and that is good for now. May try to sell my iMac, although it is a very good computer!

Has anyone with an Intel Core Duo got lm_sensors to work?

I keep getting a message about no sensors being found. I've followed the wiki, but I just can't seem to get it to work for my Core Duo.
If you have got it to work, can you please let me know which modules sensors-detect told you to load?

I keep having consistent problems using this new motherboard with a Dual Core CPU
My new motherboard keeps crashing randomly while watching video online.
I can watch a video for about 2 min or even 20min and then the PC randomly crashes
I get this weird mosaic pattern on the screen whenever it crashes and then I have to press Reset to Reboot
And it **only** crashes after streaming a video on any of the websites, YouTube, CBS.com, NBC.com, Hulu.com etc, etc
My last PC never crashed while watching a video online - it was just slow since Adobe player is a hog -- and it was still a 1.8GHZ CPU !!
My last PC is still using version 10.1 for the Adobe Flash player -- and it ***never*** crashes
The most I ever see happen on that one is that the player might occasionly crash in the video window and the error message says to reload the Flash player.
Then I tried this remedy of disabling the Hardware Acceleration in the Adobe Settings -- but no luck still.
I even downgraded to 10.1, then 10.0 and it still keeps getting these random crashes while watching video
I'm wondering if WinXP 32bit is really compatible with Adobe Flash when using a Dual Core CPU
Before I plunk down $100 for Win7, I'm thinking about trying Ubuntu and see what luck I have.
I haven't seem anything to the contrary yet.

How exactly does that "crash" manifest itself? What exact error message are you getting?
Have you tried to update the device drivers for your graphics/video/display adapter?

I am having problems with small text size on AOL mail, and am using the latest version of Firefox.

I am having problems with text size when using AOL Mail. I am using version 25.0 of Firefox. I did not have this problem in the past, but I suspect a change occurred with one of the Firefox upgrades. I do not have the same problem when using Internet Explorer.

Could you start by resetting the zoom level on the page? To do that, you can either:
* Press Ctrl+0 (that's a zero) on the keyboard
* View menu > Zoom > Reset
You also can use zoom to increase/decrease the size from there. This article describes the various mouse, keyboard, and menu methods: [[Font size and zoom - increase the size of web pages]].

Turning on Virtualization in Compaq/HP Presario C500 with Dual Core processor

Hoping someone can help me out.
Running a Compaq Presario C500 laptop with the Dual Core processor. Intel's site says the processor supports virtualization.
However, in the F.24 A Phoenix BIOS setup (pressing F10 on Startup), there's no option to turn on Intel Virtualization Technology on any of the Tabs. Tried downgrading the BIOS to F.14A -- as the description says; "Adds item to Setup utility (F10) to enable/disable Intel Processor Virtualization Technology."
However, when I startup, press F10 -- there's no option for turning this on.
Is there another place to go -- other than the F10 setup area of the BIOS -- to turn on Virtualization Technology?
If an expert out there can help, it would be very appreciated!

Older SP vs. Dual Core - Browser/Plugin Performance

Have been down the block here many times. I'm very familiar with issues regarding the discontinued support of Flash Players and the frustration trying to keep your perfectly good running older G5's up to date.
Have question why I can't get the browsers in my older G5 SP 1.8 to work as satisfactorily with my two Dual Core G5's?
Details: I have 3 G5's #2 Dual Core 2.0's and #1 older SP 1.8. The Dual Core machines have #2 Browsers installed; TenFourFox ver 4, & Safari 4.1.3 with Flash Player ver 10.0 r45. Most videos in BOTH machines play just fine including UTube.
However my older 1.8 SP machine, (with browsers Safari 4.1.3, & TenFourFox ver 9), trying ALL archived versions of Flash DO NOT function properly. Each time I've used the Adobe uninstaller, then tried several/all archived players, always followed by 'Disk Permissions'. NONE will yield the same satisfactory results as with the Dual Core machines.
I'm wondering now if this situation could be related to the older 1.8 SP? Or perhaps have something to do with the Video Card in the SP machine? It's the only machine with an ATI, rather than Nvidia?
BTW, I also just tried a 'home-made altered' version of Flash, which was created by a skilled-creative person who's efforts are directed to us G5 users with NON-Intel machines. Anyway, it also failed ...
Any ideas?

Your video plays fairly well on Leopard in Safari (Flash 10.1) in my 2.0 GHz SP G4 w/Geforce 6800 GT.
With scaling on and full screen, the video is jerky. With scaling off, the video smooths and the video is enjoyable to watch.
HOWEVER, comparing the playback of the video on an Intel processor machine with much stronger CPU/GPU and Flash 11.1, the playback quality difference is marked; cinema-like as opposed to "web video"....

In your case, you have adequate GPU but inadequate CPU.
The 1.8 GHz machine wasn't good for more than 20-25 fps with HD at 480i.
128 MB VRAM and a mid grade GPU (9800 and better) are all that are needed in the graphics department.
One needs 30 fps and better to "see" smooth video.
If you were complaining about video with a FX 5200 or a Radeon 9600 I would say "get a better card".
In this case, No.
Video in OS X has ALWAYS been far more CPU bound than GPU bound... some comparisons to Windows put the diference at 5x more CPU.
BTW, Radeon drivers have, historically, almost always been better than Geforce drivers in OS X.
This is especially true in Tiger and Leopard.

Yes.
You are simply experiencing the limitations of the SP 1.8....... NO comparison AT ALL to either of your dual core machines, regardless of the graphics card.

Processor question - Dual core vs. single core.

I currently have an Aspire 6930 laptop that I bought about a year ago on clearance from Best Buy. I'm quite happy with it. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (2.0 GHZ, 800MHz, FSB, 2 MB L2 cache), 3 GB DDR2, 320 GB HDD if that means anything. I'm not a computer geek so really don't know much about this stuff.
Our old laptop is a modular laptop (about 4 years old) which my husband is using (I won't let him mess with my Aspire - long story) and it's pretty much falling apart. None of the USB ports work, the CD/DVD RW is broken, one of the hinges is busted so it won't close properly and it runs slower than a snails pace as he's dowloaded any and all "speed up your PC" and "diagnose your PC" programs from the web - if it's on the web it must be true, right???? Anyway, I've taken pity on him and have decided to try to buy him a new laptop as a combination 10 year anniversary/42nd birthday/Christmas present. Money is a HUGE issue as I'm a SAHM and have been pinching pennies and clipping coupons from the grocery money to try to come up with some funds for this surprise. I'd like to stay around $400.

An extra $150 is going to be really tough for me to come up with but if it will truly make a significant difference I will try to find it somewhere.
Your thoughts/recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks for the input. We really don't have the space for a desktop which is why the laptop worked so well for us. The only place to put a desktop is on the kitchen table and then we are always taking it apart when family come for dinner (which is often). I thought of netbook, but it does seem so limited. My husband is an amateur photographer and I would like the larger screen so that if he decides to persue this he would be able to do some basic photo editing, etc.
I think I will go with the dual core processer. BB has an HP that is $429
