Anyone with FCP + SnapzProX experience?

I've recently purchased SnapzProX, a software that allows
you to capture quicktime movies of your actions on
a MAC desktop. It works pretty well.
However, I'm using it primarily for tutorial purposes,
to show students how to perform certain actions in
FCP and other MAC software.
The major issue I've run into is that the quicktime
movie that SnapzProX generates for you looks great,
lots of detail and such, but the software doesn't give you
the ability to add any text or arrows or such to the screen.
You can add Voice-overs, but no text, which is a bit
limiting for tutorials.
When I import the quicktime movie it generates into FCP,
and add text through the text generator, not only is
this EXTREMELY time consuming, but the resulting quicktime
movie I export is also VERY compromised, fuzzy, and nearly
unuseable. I know this has to do with compression settings
and such.
I'm just wondering if anybody has used SnapzProX before
in the manner in which I described, or a similar program,
and has found a way to add text or other elements to
the quicktime file IN FCP, while maintaining quality and
without it becoming an incredibly time consuming process.
Thanks.

Hello brvideo,
I have been working with Snapz and FCP 5 for some time and have found that they work very well together, even to the point of making very small but very high quality files.
As has been mentioned in this thread, the first thing to know is your Snapz settings. For example, I am working on a project were I capture at 800x600, 30 fps, in the Animation codec, automatic keyframes, millions of colors. I'm not capturing any audio with the screen.
Then the FCP 5 sequence must be setup to EXACTLY match these. I set the sequence settings at
Frame Size: 800 x 600
Aspect Ratio: custom (4:3)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
(Anamorphic is not set)
Field Dominance: None
Editing Timebase is 30
QuickTime video settings are:
Animation, quality 100%
Advanced... is Animation
Frames per second: 30
Key frame every 30 frames
Depth: Millions
Quality is Best.
This matches the Snapz capture settings but, as you can see, FCP is a little bit more detailed.
At this point I have an FCP sequence preset that is ready to accept and edit my captures with full quality. (If these setings in FCP did not match Snapz, if you were using something like a DV NTSC setting your captures would be completely degraded. FCP and Snapz have to match as you have seen.)
Then I edit, adding text, dissolves etc., etc., etc and I keep full quality. I find FCP really really efficient for doing any kind of editing but I did read the book LOL!
I export, using QuickTime Conversion, not QuickTime Movie. I export to, you guessed it, Animation compressor, 30 fps, keyframe every 30 frames or automatic, millions of colors and quality best. No point to try to limit a data rate on an export like this LOL!
Then I use QT Pro to do the real compression. (File > Export in QT player)
I have been using H264
Frame Rate of 15 fps, sometimes even 12 fps looks good
Key Frames: automatic
frame Reordering checked
Compressor Quality at Best
Encoding: Best Quality
Data Rate Automatic
It takes awhile to compress but the results are beautiful. Even the dissolves are very very attractive. I can even resize the movies down from 800x600 to 600x450 or even 400x300 and they look great. None of the other codecs even come close.
Your end user has to have QT 7/6.5. And this is only going to play on a computer, not a TV. (I've never been able to get a screen capture look acceptable on a tv, and for me it's a non issue.)
That's pretty much my workflow.
Now can I ask you something?
Have you noticed in the FCP Browser that when you import a Snapz capture the frames per second are always set to 10 fps no matter what you capture at in Snapz Can you take a look and tell me if you see this in your Browser? I'd really like to know. Every Snapz capture comes in at 10 fps and has to be dealt with in order to edit critically...

All I know is that once it is installed it is erased, the Lion Installer is erased from the applications folder.
You won't have to pay for it again if you have to download again. Remember to move it out of the applications folder, then you can trash it when you are ready or even burn a startup DVD.

  • How to increase your battery health - anyone with similar experiences?

this is my very own self made instruction of "how to increase your battery health"
it is the procedure how i have done it serverall times on my powerbook g4 12".
    my stats: 374 cycles, health 86% (3790 of 4400mAh)
age of my mac: 57month (battery bit newer)
**if you to try this: it is on your own risk!**
**this may not be suitable for mac newbies**
**be sure to read this twice before you do it once!**
    you will need:
-a pocket lamp or comparable light (to see anything on your sreen when it is dark --> light from the back through apple logo)
-coconutbattery (coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery) or comparable programm to track your battery information in realtime
    -activity monitor
-cool enviroment (to ensure your fans don't have to work that much)
    -some time and patience
    the intructions:
step1: load your mac until the orange light turns green
    step2: disconnect the power adapter
step3: use your mac until 15-25% battery life (track this information in your menu bar)
step4: slow down your activities. the order of the following actions depend on your usage of your mac:
__close programms that use lots of cpu/gpu to ensure the fans slow down to 0rpm (!!)
__turn off everything that needs battery power: airport / bluetooth / speakers / etc.
    __eject dvd or cd
__close all programms with important data
__eject idisk / .dmg files in your finder (this is not only a matter of data security)
__dissonnected from peripherals such as ethernet / internet / mouse / keyboard
    __use lower brightness level
__open activity monitor to ensure that your hard drive activity is very low, may be you need to close more active programms, close activity monitor when hard drive activity is very low
__open system preferences >> energy saver preferences >> choose longest battery life
when your are ready with those actions go on and ensure you are able to connect to power adapter with your mac quickly (be able to charge - don't do it yet!)
step5: be patient. now it should take some time until your battery level goes down to 3-5%
now there should be no programm running.
do not open any programm now!
do not have a look at your dashboard!
now your mac should be really quiet:
    -no fans (0rpm!)
    -nearly no hard drive activity!!
-->> if this not the case break go on with step 11&12, try again in a week or two
-->> if you are ready go on with step6
step6: open coconutbattery und use the lowest brightness level
play with your trackpad to ensure your screensaver won't start. waste time until you are at 1-2% battery life.
step7: take your lamp and spot through the transperent apple logo, position your coconut battery window somehow that you can see the current battery charge und the maxium battery charge in the spot of your lamp through the apple logo.
step8: go from the lowest brightness level to the level under the lowest brightness level (a dark screen)
step9: watch your current battery charge carefully und keep on playing with your trackpad to ensure your screensaver won't start.
step10: there is kind of battery buffer made of approximately 1% (once when my "current battery charge" was 3624mAh and this kind of buffer was at 36mAh)
to empty this kind of battery buffer takes much longer as you might expect!
when your current battery charge turns under this kind of battery buffer, your maximum battery charge should change. hopefully it is higher or stays the same. when it is lower now: i'm sorry - i have warned you. may be you have to go through this 'how to' more carefully!?
step11: plug in your power adapter before the battery is cero!
step12: load until the orange light turns green
step13: if it was helpful do not repeat it more than once a week, better once a month

anyone with similar experiences about increasing battery health!?
(yes, i'm sorry for my poor english, i've tried my best)

Me too! My battery lasts for 10 minutes. It is awful and I am on my 4th power adapter since they keep breaking too.
From coconut battery: Maximum battery charge 310mah, original 4400, age of mac 45 months, 140 cycles.
    From system profile:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 310
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 213
    Amperage (mA): -1205
    Voltage (mV): 11557
    Cycle Count: 140
I went to an apple authorized retailer and they said nothing I can do if it is out of warranty.. is this true?

  • Anyone using a 4K monitor with FCP X?

Is anyone using FCP X on a 4K monitor? I'm thinking about getting a Dell 4K monitor as my main monitor but I'm a little worried the user interface support on 4K is weak. I think everything is going to look super tiny.
    Has anyone already experienced this?
    Thanks!

So I have my new Mac Pro set up. 8-Core, 32 gigs RAM, Dual 700 GPUs, 512 gig internal Flash drive.
I purchased the 27" Thunderbolt display as my main Final Cut Pro X screen and I have the Dell UP2414q 4K monitor plugged in as the Viewer display.
I have the Dell set to "Best for Display" and it works fine. I have some 4480 x 1920 RED footage and I have the FCP X Viewers on the Dell. The footage is set to 100% and it bleeds a little off the sides, as it should since the monitor is 3820 wide. It's at its native resolution.
The user interface elements of the second monitor are at normal size - the menu bar, the FCP X view options. Buying a 4K monitor and using Best for Display gives you the desktop the size of a typical 1080 monitor, but it all looks like a Retina display. It's very crisp.
So if you want a second monitor to hold a ton of Adobe palettes, and have a very large desktop, I'd recommend getting a Thunderbolt display, beause this display behaves like a 1080 monitor in that regard. If you want a 4K monitor specifically for color grading 4K footage at the native size so you can see all the artifacts and things you wouldn't see with the footage at 50%, this Dell monitor is fine and it's $890 on Amazon. It's not a professional color grader's monitor, obviously, but it does well for me.
I took some 4480 x 1920 RED footage that had a sky that was gray (the famous Mercedes in the mountains footage). I used the color picker color correction in FCP X and was able to select that sky very easily. I can see why the fat 4K footage is so great in regards to color grading. Because you don't have the massive color gradiation and artifacts you get in the more compressed media, when you use the color picker, it selects a very large, clean, section of the sky. I was able to quickly make the sky more saturated and blue and play it in real time (Better Performance) it's it's perfectly clean with no halos around the tree branches as they move into the foreground of the sky. Very nice!
Nice feature in FCP X is all the effects, transitions, etc., have a "4K-ready content only" button at the top so it only presents you with effects and transitions that work with 4K footage.
It took a lot of time calibrating this Dell monitor. It has the Adobe RGC color space built in but when I set it to that and set the OS X Display color option to Adobe RGB, it all had a very slight purple/pink huge. Very slight. Whites were not pure white like they are on the Thunderbolt and my blue sky had a tinge of pink to it.
I calibrated it with advanced options in the OS X Display preferences. I then connected my Samsung HD LED TV into the HDMI port of the Mac Pro and set it as my A/V display in FCP X. I was able to do the custom color setting on the Dell monitor itself and lower the saturation and RGB values. It took about 15 minutes to get it looking right. Now, I don't see the very slight purple/pink tink. My blue sky looks blue, etc., and it looks exactly how it will look on DVD and Blu-ray and projectors at film festivals.
The Samsung LED TV was a breeze to use. As soon as I plugged it into the HDMI port of the Mac Pro, the displays changed and OS X went to 1920 x 1080 60hz. The color was set to an HD color preset (I forget the number and I disconnected it). Arranging the multiple monitors is as you'd expect, just works.
BTW, I have 2 10 TB 5Big Lacie Thunderbolt 2 hard drives. They are about $1K each at 10 TBs. I have one for my footage and one as a backup with Time Machine. No formatting necessary - just plug them in and go. I plugged in the first one, told OS X no for Time Machine. Plugged in the second one, told Time Machine yes. Renamed the second drive "Backup". I turned off hard drive sleep becuase it's annoying. You hear it spin up, spin down, spin up, etc. as you work.
I used the AJA benchmark and this is what I got with 16 gig test file, 4K video simulation:
    Write 740.3 MB/s
    Read: 849.1 MB/s
    Fast!
FCP X loads in 4 seconds on this system off the internal Flash drive.
    Cheers!

  • Mavericks experiences (good or bad) with FCP X

Having updated to Mavericks today, I am happy to report that my mac now behaves soooo much better under heavy load.
As it has been often discussed in this forum, low free memory used to slow down everything, and in particular FCP X.
Memory management has been significantly overhauled in Mavericks and so far it seems this is a great improvement.
In my unscientific tests, even loading some big applications when free ram was already depleted resulted in no spinning beach balls at all. I was able to continue work with no significant slow down.
I would like to hear any reports of your experience with FCP X under the new OS.

… hmm, if THIS is reasoned by Mavericks, it is marvel:
The coach of my soccer-kids asked for a 'multi pip version' of our games - all 5 perspectives simultaneously in one 1080-video…
Only the material in window 'main' was optimized; all others were NOT imported to an FCPX-Event, just the original h.264 stuff; plus a time-code as 'title'.
I knew, this would need a lot of time on my under-powered MacMini/2.24/8GBs ...
    pt.I took 14h for a 35min video …………… I'm in no hurry.-
pt.II was a lil' different: a) in my first attempt, for convenience, I 'compounded' each 'track'… in pt.II I sticked/synched the parts together manually; and, in pt.I I forgot to add a plain black as background, so, theoretically, the storyline was transparent.
    Aaand, pt.II now with Mavericks
    => 6h! yepp, this is a six, not 14h!
this is pure anecdotical, I changed too many parameters btw I and II to call this a 'test' …
    but I'm flabbergasted!

Well, when I start working (should I say try to work with FCPX, activity monitor in the %processor column for FCPX jumps rapidly over 100% and reaches more than 200% ??? What the **** is that ?
200% or more is not strange. Remember that your mac has 4 cores (you say it's 3 months old, so I assume it is a new model), so 200% amounts to using 2 of these 4 cores to the max.
Regarding the question of creating a new admin user: while it sits in the same system, it may help if the problem is caused by some user-specific preferences or settings. Not likely in your case, since you seem to have reinstalled from scratch, but still it is worth a try. It takes 5 minutes and may help pinpoint the problem.

I think what may be your main issue here is that the 2011
server has the Intel integrated HD3000 and is is struggling
to run both a Thuderbolt display and a second monitor.
When looking at specs for Thunderbolt Display, it is stated
that the 2011 Mini Server can only support one.  Adding that
Dell monitor with 1920x1200 display may just be too many
pixels for the HD3000 to handle.
You may want to try setting the Dell to a lower resolution
to test the theory to see what happens.  It is however,
possible that any additional monitor when using the Thunderbolt
display may over tax the HD3000 graphics.
FWIW personally, I have been running a 2011 Mini Server w/ Thunderbolt
display for almost a year now without any issues.  However, I don't
    use a second monitor.

Anyone with experience with iOS 5.0.1 on 3GS?

When I updated my 3Gs OS to iOS5.0.1, things were running noticeably slower than usual. But that's not the bad thing. A few days later, my phone was shutting down randomly for no apparent reason, and rebooting. All these talks about battery draining faster and programs hanging were not common to me, or maybe I just didn't mind at all and paid no attention. So I took my phone to a shop, and that's where I learned of the problem, and the very simple solution of reverting back to the previous iOS. Now it works just fine, as if brand new, though I'm using iOS4.x which is what I'll stick with for the time being until Apple gets it's act together and fix the real problem.

  • Anyone have good/bad experience with MX02 Mini?

I'm very interested in how it's working for 1080 24p in FCP & Motion.
Is the blue-only calibration and 10 bit worth paying the extra $$ over an Intensity Pro?
Also curious about it with AE on Win7 - as with the card, apparently the same device can work on multiple platforms easily.

I've got one running out of the SATA slot on my macbook, and it's been great - largely because there are so few ways to monitor off of such a setup. I can't speak to Windows, but I use it with FCP and After Effects, working 1080p out to a Toshiba HD set, and it really does help me - the color is good, but the true motion playback has really been a bonus. To my eye it's hard to beat for the price.

  • Anyone tried using a QText file with FCP?

I was just wondering if there is some way to utilize a QText file for captioning with FCP, either directly of by importing it into QTPro, then exporting it in a form that FCP understands? The idea is to use these as timed text overlays.

QText is a bit more, at least to my limited understanding. Let's say you have a QText file with 10 lines of text you want to display. In the header you can specify color, size, etc. Before each line of text you enter a time code which represents the start time for displaying that line. For example:
    [00:00:00]
This is my first line and displays for 4 seconds
    [00:00:04]
This line is displayed 4 seconds after the first, and displays for 6 seconds
    [00:00:10]
and this line is 6 seconds after the one above (i.e. 10 seconds in).
and so on. One way to look at it, each line of text becomes a slide which displays until the next line is called.
When fed to QTime, you get a very nice vector graphics display of each line at the specified time. It would be great if I could export that as a video file which I then could use in an overlay track in FCP. QTPro offers several export options including such as MP4, m4v, etc. Dragging these files into FCP either generates a Codec error when rendered or isn't recognized at all. I guess I could use a video screen capture program and capture the QTP display, but that seems like a crude and slow process. I had hoped, since FCP and QTP are both Apple products they would have found some way to integrate them. No mention of QText in the FCP help file, so it would appear no such luck.

  • Experiencing 'lag' & other issues with FCP 7.0.3 on MacBook Pro...please help!

    Hi all
Man, I've been having SUCH frustrations with my MBP running FCP lately - and it used to be 100% no more than 6 months ago?
Basically what happens is that the Canvas window starts lagging after a while - it sometimes looks as if the external HDD can't keep up with FCP anymore, regardless of whether I use my Mac HD as scratch drive, or my external. And I've tried it across numerous externals... I'm beginning to wonder if it's my logic board or GPU, or perhaps even my FW800 port?
Also, when I'm editing on my timeline and add new clips to the edit, this behaviour picks up. Sometimes, when I'm scrubbing or skipping through clips on the timeline, the Canvas displays funky green frames, starts laggin, or the worst: the frames between one cut and another jump around like crazy, even if I just play back at normal speed.
I've done everything I could - cleared space on my Mac HD (it's now got more than 50% free), repaired and verified disk permissions, run AppleJack, etc. etc.
Does anyone know what it could be? I'm seriously considering a fresh install of Mac OS X 10.6 and FCS2, as well as upgrading from 4Gb to 8Gb RAM, but what bothers me most is how this used to never happen, and it's not like the work I'm doing is more intense or heavier than anything I've done before.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks... But again, why would I have to do this now when it was never a problem before?
In any case, all the footage I'm using in this project is XDCAM EX, the only difference being that some footage is 720, while other footage is 1080, and then there's also a variation in terms of interlaced and progressive footage accross the board (it's a rock band documentary, don't ask! )... Could this have something to do with it?
I kinda doubt it, cos one of the TV shows I work on has the same codec, resolution and other settings accorss the board, and I experience the same stutter on these projects...
