Anything on anyway to protect a folder from deletion?

Hi all, I have some pretty large folders of music and movies on an network drive and although it has harddrive failure protection there is nothing to prevent a muppet like me deleting a folder.
Sometimes I delete things off it and because its a network volume it warns it will delete immediatly and I tend to run on auto, one day I will pick the wrong folder.
Is there anyway to prevent this? Thing is I want to be able to read and write to it so locking it down is not an option.
Cheers

Add the dreaded "everyone deny delete" access control entry to the folder. I think you can use this GUI application -> http://mikey-san.net/sandbox/ if you are Terminal phobic.

  • Protect a folder from deletion

I have a sharepoint folder that I want to protect from being deleted. The folders within change so users need to be able to read write within the folder.
I have used ACLs at the custom level and removed ability to delete the parent folder. However, when I attempt to delete the parent folder to test, a dialogue window comes up to tell me I do not have permissions to delete, and when I ok that window, the contents of the parent folder gets deleted.
Try as I might I have been unable to  find the write combo of permissions to prevent the contents being deleted with the parent protected from deletion.
Any suggestions would be most welcome!

You could look at creating a 'Commons" folder. It can be a bit tricky at first, but if you work with it I think you can get what you want. See John Detroye's excellent Tips and Tricks document which can be downloaded from this web address: https://servicedesk.utep.edu/workorder/FileDownload.jsp?module=Solution&ID=1511& delete=false
Search for 'Commons". This document is geared toward 10.5 server, but ACL's were introduced in 10.4 server, so it should be doable.

  • How to protect Web.config from deletion

My web.config file holds custom error redirection info on the
remote server (it is created by Internet Information Services 7).
There is no corresponding file in my local files. When I synch my
local files to the remote server, Dreamweaver always offers to
"Delete" the remote file web.config, since it is not found in the
local files. This is of course undesirable. Is there a way to
effectively cloak this file or otherwise protect it from
inadvertent deletion during the process of synchronization? I
probably won't remember each and every time I synchronize to set
    this file to "Ignore".

Download the web.config file from the server into the local
    site.

  • Protect a folder but not it's sub folders

    Hi.
I have a "main" folder that have lots of sub folders.
If I'll delete by mistake the "main" folder ( and trash ) , the sub folders will lost !
How can I protect a folder from mistake deletion but not it's sub folders ?
Not with a password as it seems complicated , just simple solution. ..
The sub folders will be able to accept all changes like delete / modify / rename and all other actions
    Thanks.

Add the "group:everyone deny delete" ACL to the main folder. You can still manage to delete it, but will ask for an admin password before doing so.
    In Terminal,
chmod +a "group: everyone deny delete" path/to/folder

    Hello cheech07,
The following article contains directions that can help get you back on track with iTunes. I'd recommend picking up at 'Part 5' of the 'External drive' section.

  • Link to other published web folder from within password protected iWeb site

I realise that you cannot password protect an iWeb site if it contains a link to an external page / file. However, I have a complex genealogy site that I had previously published to another site. I directly copied this folder to the iWeb directory alongside the folder for the protected site published from iWeb. I have tried all sorts of link URLs on the protected site page, trying to link to the genealogy index.html file. iWeb refuses to allow password protection or even point correctly to the site.
Does anyone know how to create a suitable link to a site folder created elsewhere?

I have a password protected site with a page that has a link to an ordinary homepage.mac.com page, with no problems. Could you provide more details on what is not working for you? Maybe putting your geneology folder in iDisk/Sites and linking to that would help?

If you haven't installed Java, no. If you have installed Java, run Software Update.

  • How do you delete [empty] a single file or folder from "Trash"?

How do you delete [empty] a single file or folder from "Trash"?
Can you "securely delete" just 1 item?

A dangerous and incorrect shell command has been posted in this thread.
NEVER empty the Trash in the shell (Terminal.) NEVER put anything in the Trash unless you intend to delete it immediately. If you do put something in the Trash and change your mind about deleting it, move it out or use the Put Back contextual menu item. Then empty the remaining items in the Trash as usual.

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

  • I have a new pc. If I copy the Itunes folder from my old pc onto my new one in the music folder will I be able to sync just as if it were the old one? This is from a Widows Vista machine to Windows 7.

If I copy the Itunes folder from my old pc onto my new one in the music folder will I be able to sync just as if it were the old one? This is from a Widows Vista machine to Windows 7.

I suspect design rather than a bug, it's too useful. The behaviour seems to have been consistent for quite a long time on both Windows and Mac machines...
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the layout above right, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library will be portable. A portable library can be moved from one path to another, or even between Windows & Mac computers, without breaking the links between the library and the media, and being self-contained is much easier to backup (You do backup, don't you?). Anything that isn't stored inside the media folder must stay put or be restored to precisely the same path on a new machine or iTunes won't know where to find it. Within the media folder the relative paths from the library to the media remain unchanged and iTunes can cope even when the absolute paths are updated.
Should your library not be in the usual layout I've written some general posts on how to make a split library portable or I can give specific instructions on request.

  • Can I delete a whole disk folder from my Time Machine backup drive?

I temporarily mounted a drive (let's call it "Mumble"), forgetting to exclude it from Time Machine's list of disks to ignore. I caught this oversight after Time Machine had done just one hourly backup, and Time Machine is no longer backing it up, i.e., there's no "Mumble" folder in Time Machine's recent time-stamped folders on the backup HD.
I'd like to recover space on the backup HD by deleting the unwanted backup of "Mumble" files.
Can I simply delete the "Mumble" folder from yesterday's Time Machine "2009-01-31-155458" folder on the backup HD?

don't delete anything o the TM drive using finder. you can do this from TM interface. start TM. select your "Mumble" drive in the sidebar. click on the "gears' action button in finder's toolbar and choose 'delete all backups of..".

I have years worth of music on my PC that is about to die.  If I get an iPad is there anyway to get the music from my PC onto the iPad? I have the iCloud but my understanding is only music actually purchased from iTunes lives int he cloud. I have music that was legally purchased and loaded to my iTunes account from cd's that I no longer own.  I need a new laptop and am deciding between the iPad and the Mac book.  I use the computer for music, photos, and web - nothing else and nothing fancy.  I don't know that there is a way to save my huge music library without saving it to an external hard drive and then loading it to a new one (does the iPad have a port to plug an external hard drive into?)

First, you would need to make a backup of the entire iTunes folder on the PC. You could get music to the iPad if the PC was still functioning, or you would have to move the music to another computer. An iPad is not a laptop, and does not have a port to plug an external drive into. You can sync music to the iPad from the computer, but you are correct, unless you get iTunes Match, you would need a computer to copy the music to and then sync to an iPad.

  • How do I remove dozens of "protected system" fonts from my computer?

There are dozens of foreign language fonts installed on my system, (how they got there, I don't know, but I suspect the Cloud programs installed them at some time or another) and all they do is clutter up the selection list when I try to select a font to use. (No, the "hide foreign language" tool in Windows doesn't fix the problem.) I went to my Windows 7 control panel Fonts page and selected all the fonts I wanted to remove and hit Delete. Fine for some, but I kept getting a warning that the font I was trying to remove was a "protected system" font and could not be removed. Horse manure! I don't need them, I don't want them, and I want them removed from my system. So, how do I get these fonts "un-protected" so I can delete them forever from my computer??

Thanks for the link. It appears that the problem is with Windows, and not something the Cloud did to my computer after all. From what I can tell, people have been upset about this since sometime in 2009, and the only way to remedy it is to edit the registry and/or change the ownership of the files and grant administrator permissions to myself (somehow even more than I already have). It WOULD be nice if Adobe at least found a way to comply with MS's file hiding scheme so Photoshop and Dreamweaver and InDesign would not show all of the unneeded, unwanted, and unnecessary foreign language fonts that MS won't let us mere users delete. Thanks for the help, anyway.

  • I transfered my music into my new mac into itunes media folder from an external, but it dosnt show in itunes.  I have to click on each one to activate it on itunes.  there has to be a better and easier solution.  help

i transfered my music into my new mac into itunes media folder from an external, but it dosnt show in itunes.  I have to click on each one to activate it on itunes.  there has to be a better and easier solution.  help

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow?  In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?
Once again thank you for helping me out. I am not too Itunes savvy and really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

  • I copied our entire music folder from old PC on tovnew iMac, all our muisc is there, but not our individual libraries have gone. and holding down the alt key when opening iTunes, brings up no options to choose or create  libarys, can i recover our liba

    Hi
I copied our entire music folder from our old pc on to the new imac, and all the apps, music etc is there, but no individual libarys, we had 5 very different ones, when pressing and holding the alt key on opeing itunes, nothing happens it just opens into itunes, no option to choose or create a libary, what am i doing wrong?

Did you copy the entire iTunes folder, not just media?  This includes the critical library.itl file.
Image of folder structure and explanation of different iTunes versions (turingtest2 post) - https://discussions.apple.com/message/13025536 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/17457605
Now you say you had 5 libraries.  If you really mean that then you would have to have copied 5 different iTunes folders in their entirety, not just one folder.  Anyway, something makes me feel you did not copy a whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files, you only copied the music.
On the starting with the option (alt) key held down I really don't know what to advise.  It works for me hundreds of times and just about everybody else here.  The only thing I can suggest is to hold the key down longer or perhaps start iTunes and then 1 second later hold down the key for a few seconds.
