Anything similar to Gradient Map in InDesign?

Hi, we're using InDesign CS3, and wondering if there is anything in the new version (or any plugins/techniques) that would more closely match the effect possible when using a gradent map on an image in Photoshop?
We have a project that uses many historic photos that are black & white. We need to colorize these with a good deal of control (so we can get predictable results, and change easily). We would usually colorize in InDesign by choosing a foreground and background color. Simple enough.
But I know in Photoshop you achieve this by using a gradient map, and have the option of including more than just 2 colors. The advantage to this is that you can include a black (or very dark version of your 'foreground' color) for the darkest shadows, and/or a white (or light 'background' color) for the lightest highlights, in addition to your 2 typical 'background' and 'foreground' colors. The result, is that these images have the same exact coloration across most of the image, but look much richer and more dynamic with the extra darkness/lightness on the extreme ends.
So, of course, we could adjust all images in Photoshop as outlined above, but there will be a LOT of images, and there will always be changes to the colors along the way. If we do all in Photoshop, that would mean any change to a color, even if slight, would mean opening/editing/saving all corresponding Photoshop images. Very time-consuming! In InDesign, it's as simple as changing the swatch color for all affected images.
- Anything new in CS4?
- Any other way to go about this?
THANKS!

Nothing really analagous to gradient map. You can use blending modes like Multiply or Screen, but that's not new.

• Something like Gradient Map in InDesign?

Hi,
Wondering if in the new version of InDesign (CS6) there might be any way to do anything similar to the Gradient Map adjustment layer in Photoshop? I'm open to a plugin or any way to use a Photoshop adjustment layer in InDesign if that's at all possible.
We just need to colorize a bunch of grayscale images in InDesign and would like more control than the 2 colors you can get when doing it traditionally in InDesign (image color & background color). With a gradient map, we can add a dark/black shadow color and/or a light/white highlight color in addition to the main foreground/background colors. This allows for the same tonality as you could get in InDesign but with much more depth & contrast, much richer.
We just won't have time to be constantly opening all images in Photoshop to do this and do any color updating that needs to happen. Too many images for this to be practical.
Thanks. Any other creative ideas are welcome.

No gradient maps, but have you tried colorizing using a gradient swatch (I haven't, but I'm not sure it won't work)? You probably won't have as much control over stop positions or directionality, but you might want to see waht it can do for you.

• CMYK gradient maps don't work correctly in Photoshop CS 4

Gradient maps built with CMYK colors in Photoshop don't work correctly in CS4. For one particular client I often use a brushed steel background. To control color shifts on the press I used a gradient map blending from C0 M0 Y0 K0 to C40 M20 Y20 K100. This has worked great in the past, but once you open that gradient map in CS4 and start editing that gradient at all, even if you edit it back to the original CMYK numbers, the colors shift drastically, and if you watch the info palette, the colors get totally remapped to a different black. I can go in a reset the black to the C40 M20 Y20 K100 mix, but it doesn't work. When I go back in, it completely changes them.
Since this works fine in CS3 and not in CS4, is this a program bug? I'm not doing anything differently.
It was a great way of controlling neutral gray mixes (and other color mixes) for CMYK printing. Is there a fix for this? Adobe, is anyone addressing this bug? I've read other threads on this, but with no solutions.

I couldn't attach the .psd files, so I uploaded here for reference:

I have not gone back to check how this is handled in CS3 yet I could duplicate your problem in CS4. The changing of numbers in the CMYK looks like it has to do with the color mangement settings in Photoshop.
I was able to make sure the numbers input to the gradient map did not chang. I did this by going to Edit>Assign Profile and then clicked the option "Don't Color Manage this Document"
This may not solve your problem directly yet it does indicate that the problem you have (or that Adobe has) is related to how the color management is being handled.
So one question would be are you using the "exact" color management settings in CS4 as you did in CS3 and were those in place when you imported the file into CS4. If not, and if you did not have the correct warning options set, there may have been a color setting change of which you were not aware.
While I was able to keep the original settings from changing in the Gradient Map, there was still a problem in CS4 where the Lab values would change (and the appearance on the LCD screen) after doing any color picker editing and changing the CMYK values back to 40 20 20 100. This definetly seems related to the color model/probile/management system in place. So it appears that even though I can get the CMYK numbers to stay and not change, there is still a bug when making no changes to the color management settings, and the CMYK values are the same, that the Lab values and the appearance on the screen change.
Hope you can get Adobe's attention. Looks like a bug to me.

• Pse 9 gradient map problem

when I add a gradient map adjustment layer and select foreground to transparent the result it a solid color. The gradient map layer created is unresponsive to any of the editing controls. the gradient map remains a solid color. This renders the gradient map adjustment layer function useless.
mac os 10.6.4. Just did an unistall and new reistall of pse9.
thanks for any help or suggestions.

I don't think anything is wrong, it's just the gradient map layer
will map the tones in your image to the colors in the specified
gradient and won't show transparency in the gradient as transparent, but as
a color.
The Gradient fill will allow the transparency in gradient to show, much like using
the Gradient Tool from the tool box, but with more control.

• Elements 11 freezing using gradient map

Having recently installed elements on my Mac I have found it freezes everytime I use the gradient map tool and select a colour. I can then no longer click on anything and am required to force quit the program. All my software is up to date. Any help you can offer will be much appreciated.

Hum, this the second post this week about the very same thing:

I don't know if the other poster is on a mac, but i have yet to replicate the issue on windows 7 with pse 11.

• How do I import gradient map settings from one computer to another?

Quick Question,
How do I import my gradient map settings from CS3 on my old I mac into my new Mac that uses CS6? Is there a folder somewhere that I can just copy and paste?
Thanks,
Mike

1
Start Adobe Photoshop CS3 and open an image from your files to which you want to apply a gradient map.
2
Select the "Image" menu, point to "Adjustments" and click on "Gradient Map" to open the "Gradient Map" dialog box.
3
Choose the gradient you want to use for the gradient map by clicking on the "Gradient Picker" drop-down box. Click on the gradient preset you want to use for the gradient mapping. You will see that in the background the gradient has been applied to your open image.
4
Click on the gradient fill that you have chosen to open the "Gradient Editor" if you want to edit the gradient preset. Make any changes in this dialog box and click the "OK" button to close the box and return to your gradient map.
5
Set any final options to apply to your gradient map. Check "Dither" under "Gradient Options" to add noise to smooth the bands of your gradient and/or "Reverse" to switch the direction of the gradient map.
6
Use the "OK" button to close the "Gradient Map" dialog box and return your image to which the gradient map is now applied.
Is that what you were asking?
Hope it helps.

• Can I create a saturation mask based to a gradient map?

Hi
can i create a saturation mask based on a gradient map?
for the example a gradient blue from 2441f6 to 6075f6
and have a luminocity mask based of this gradient
can i do it?
how can i do it?
thanks
cheers

The gradient maps are not use to sample color, but to recolor, so you cannot use it to create the selection, use the selection to limit the gradient map to the blue areas of the sky.
You could MASK a gradient map using the saturation of the sky, to recolor based on the actual saturation of the sky.
Select the sky with your favorite method, jump it to a new layer (CTRL+J)
Use the technique in the linked tutorial to extract the luminosity, it should land on its own layer.
Hide that layer, and delete the selective color one.
Now add your gradient map adj layer, enter the two colors as desired.
Show the layer with the saturation converted to a layer. Select all, copy.
ALT+click the layer mask of your gradient map adj layer, and paste. You might need to paint in black the areas you do not want affected.
I tried it here, and had semi satisfactory results given the very heavy compression of your file, and also because the colors are pretty unrealistic.
Here is the image showing the saturation mask, and the results on the side:

• Need help with gradient map

Hello All,
Please can someone please advice me how to get the following gradient, I have tried but with no luck I am not good with gradient map!

Hello!
What part do you have trouble with? the recreation of the gradient, or how it affects the image?
In the gradient map editor, you can double-click on the bottom markers (called gradients stops) to change their color, and drag them around to re-create what you see... Click between two markers to add one, drag a gradient stop down to remove it.
In fact, you do not need the fourth gradient stop, the white one on the right side.
The top markers control the transparency (in regular gradients, gradient maps are unaffected)
With such a gradient map, the dark areas of the image will be white, neutrals will be black and light areas will be white.

• Is there anything similar to ''write: UNDER heading '' in sapscript

hi,
is there anything similar to
WRITE:/ MATNR UNDER 'MATNR'
in sapscripts so that u can print something exactly under its heading.

HI,
Define tabs in the paragraph formats and use those.It will print below the heading.You cannot use UNDER in SAP Scripts.
TO use tabs use ,, between 2 variables.

• Anything similar to MobileMe Gallery?

I am researching options for my website after MobileMe is gone. I wanted my website gallery to be one nice interactive interface that included photos and videos n the same gallery without the user having to navigate thru several pages of my site. My answer was to embed my MobileMe gallery via an HTML snippet into my site. I was really happy with this and it gave me the added functionality of sending photos directly from my iPhone iOS.
I have not found anything similar, ie allowing photos and videos in the same interface.
For reference: http://www.mattplay.com/Matt_Play/media.html
Does anyone know of any service I should look at?
Thanks.

you can have videos in iweb photos page, as long as the videos are recognized by quicktime.
you also can have photos and videos in the same photos page:
http://iweb3widgets.cyclosaurus.com/Lytebox/Photos.html
or you can have photos page for video and photos page for photos, and they can be in the same albums page.

• Gradient Map in CS4

I've just installed Photoshop CS4 but the Gradient Map tool is not working for me as in CS3.
I want to change colors of black lines on a clear background ( in a CMYK document) to 100% cyan.
I have done this many times in CS3 using the Gradient Map and setting both beginning and end points to 100% C and other colors to 0%. However, now it comes out to 69%C15%M0%Y0%K.
I have not changed any defaults in the PhotoShop program. Solutions?

open the scanned file into Photoshop
1. change the doc type to CMYK
2. duplicate the layer, change the background to white
3. Apply Threshold to Layer 1 , adjust the slider to desired density, thickness of line. use Wand tool the select and delete white background.
4. Apply GradientMap (color chip 100%Kto100%K) the get Black (100%K) lines.
5. Then I lasso-select the lines I want to be Cyan and com-J to put them on a new layer and I refine the lines with erase-pencil.
6. Apply GradientMap , this time with color chip 100%Cto100%C to this new layer.
It takes much longer to explain than to do it. Except for refining (which depends on the complexity of drawing) it only takes seconds.
The GradientMap should apply a given color(s) to the lines but some setting is different in CS4 on installation and I would like to find how to set it correctly so that Gradient Map will work correctly.

• Generating unicode for arabic character similar to Character map in c#

Hi,
I need to generate Unicode characters for Arabic character. Similar to character map dialog in windows os.
Example: ﺗ represent 'ﺗ' and ﺮ represent 'ﺮ'
in the character map.
Let me know how to get this similar Unicode from the Arabic string in c#.
Thanks in advance.

Hi SudheendraRao,
I have made a test with the code from Joel, and the 'ﺗ' and 'ﺮ' came out right.
>> if i give string "القائمة" i am expecting "اﻟﻘﺎﺋﻤﺔ" but i am getting Unicode like this "ةمئاقلا".
I am not sure the result of string "القائمة" should be, but if I split the string to one char one by one, I could not get the result which you expected.
Could you share us the some key code about your project? It would be better if you could convert “اﻟﻘﺎﺋﻤﺔ” to string to see if the result was equal with “القائمة”
Best Regards,

• Using Gradient Map Adjustment Layer to Emulate Curves

In PSE 4, the Curves function isn't available, either natively or via add-on
tools. Personally, I like adding a modest S-curve to many of my photos to
improve the contrast. Oh, well...
I remember, however, that Susan Stewart (one of the early members of this
forum) had developed a technique to use the Gradient Map Adjustment Layer as
a curves surrogate. I'm not sure exactly what she did, but I believe it
involved using the black-to-white gradient and setting the layer blend mode
to Overlay. The gradient can be modified by adding Color Stops along the
continuum between black and white to create the S-shape.
Anyone have any experience with this approach - or another Curves
replacement to consider?
Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck,
It involves using the Luminosity blend mode. Here's a PDF that gives instructions. Skip down to Version two page 3 or 4 for instructions on using a gradient map to simulate curves.

• Gradient map for shatter

Hi
I've ceated this shatter map with After effects.
http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/2644/bild2yr8.png
It's made out of 256 solids via Scripts and expressions.
Now,how can i create a gradient map so i have got control over all pieces .
I'd like to reveal them in a specific order.First row reveals from left to right then second row from right to left and so on...one row after the other.
Any expressions to give them a slight color change?

Position:
//===begin expression===
//grid size
gSize=16;
//grid spacing
gSpace=30;
//rows and columns
pRow=Math.ceil(index/gSize);
pCol=Math.ceil(index-(pRow-1)/gSize);
//positions
X=pCol*gSpace-gSpace*gSize*(pRow-1);
Y=pRow*gSpace;
[X,Y]
//===end expression===
Opacity:
//===begin expression===
//grid size
gSize=16;
//rows and columns
pRow=Math.ceil(index/gSize);
pCol=Math.ceil(index-(pRow-1)/gSize);
iStart=pRow*gSize-(gSize-1);
iEnd=pRow*gSize;
oStart=100/Math.pow(gSize,2)*(pRow-1)*gSize;
oEnd=100/Math.pow(gSize,2)*pRow*gSize;
if(pRow % 2 == 0)
mOpa = linear(index,iStart,iEnd,oStart,oEnd) //even row
else
mOpa = linear(index,iStart,iEnd,oEnd,oStart) //odd row
[mOpa]
//===end expression===
Use this in a pre-comp with white solids on top of a black solid to generate a b/w gradient.

• Gradient Map selecting colors?

Recently, while trying to use the Gradient map tool (CS6, Mac 10.9), it seems like the eyedropper can only select colors from the layer I am currently mapping, or my swatches, and not colors from any other layers of my image. I tried resetting my preferences and resetting my eyedropper tool, and it still doesn't seem to be working properly. How can I apply a gradient map and choose colors from the other layers in my image? Thanks!

I don't know if this helps, but anyway, you can see I'm working with a lot of layers. I'm trying to make a particular leaf layer match the other greens in the picture, but while gradient mapping clicking with the eyedropper tool on other layers doesn't register (on the screenshot it looks like an arrow though). The layer does not cover the whole image and you can see many other layers in the document area.
