Any Mac running OSX 10.7 or later is going to have a partitioned drive.  It is how the system is set up to work without a installer DVD.

  • Locked / Password Protected iMac G5

    Hello,
I am currently a Windows user and recently upgraded to Vista. I was very unhappy with Vista, and I am currently looking for a used Mac on eBay.
I found a cheap iMac g5, but it stated that it had 'No OS' and it was 'Password Protected'. By installing OSX Leopard, would I overcome the problem?
The site for the iMac is http://cgi.ebay.com.au/APPLE-IMAC-G5-PROCESSOR-19-1-8GHZ-160GB-512MB-DVD-RWW0QQitemZ200268187414QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200268187414&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66% 3A2%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318&trksid=p3286.c0.m14
    Thank you.

Personally, I would not make an eBay trade with a Mac seller who lists a Mac as "faulty" because it's password-protected. This sounds like the open firmware password, which is not a fault - it's a deliberate security feature set by a user to prevent other users from rebooting the computer from another copy of the OS, or the reset disks. This means that you won't be able to install Leopard. However, any good Mac technician can tell you how to remove the password feature.

  • Can someone unlock my password protected iPad / iPhone by syncing it to a computer other than mine ? ( i.e.  a computer where the devise was never synced before )

If some one finds my passward protedted iPhone / iPad and then connected it to iTunes to reinstall a fresh iOS and  unlock it can he/ she then uses my phone ?
I want to make sure to prevent anyone who finds my iPhone or iPad from using it. Is there a way? I have already protected it with a ten million combo password, I , have gps and 3G always on to use the Find iPhone App, and used a lock screen with my contact info and a promise of some $100 reward In case it was returned. If it can be cracked just by simply syncing it to iTunes and installing a fresh iOS then all these precautions means nothing from a security stand point.
    Thanks.

    Tonefox, Kappy,
Thank you both for your Comments.
While I don't won't to start a debate here, I must admit that I belong to a rare bread of apple fans: the obnoxiously critical bunch, the more I love a product the more critical I become towards that product, because I would like to see more and more improvement.
I would like to remind you that all the laptops that I have owned for the past decade had this simple security feature. And, yes, you won't be able to use them if you don't have the bios passcode. ( unless you know how to crack the bios, not easy)
I understand the car/ bike / washing machine argument. However, a laptop, a phone and an tv is diffrent. These can be protected because you can have that feature in their operating system, and have the operating system unalterable without the passcode( just like my old 2001 Dell laptop ). Comparing an iPhone to a car or a truck  might not be the best example.
We can all disagree with each others forever, but I guess I can confidently say that if your iPad gets stolen, you would, at least, want the SOB who stole it be totaly unable to make any use of it. Am I being unrealistic here too? Unless you are a total pacifist, I think you would agree with me.
    Thanks again for your comments.

  • Password protecting a .FCP file?

I have to use a shared workstation and we can not have separate login accounts. I would like to make sure that other users can not open some project files.
    1. Is there a way to make sure that a .fcp file can not be opened by someone else? password protect it?
    2. what about for a h.264 encoded file?
    Thanks.

Create a small disc image in disk utility large enough to hold the project file.
Pass word protect it, and save the project file to it.

  • Password Protected Locked Layer?

As a photographer, we are very protective of our creations. I have an image that I took for a client, that needs some Photoshop clean-up work, that will probably take me 15~30 minutes to complete, and I plan on billing my client for my labor. However, when I mentioned this work to my client, they told me that they can't afford my price (which isn't that much), and that they'd like to have a family member who is a "Photoshop expert" do the work, instead of me, and then give me the image, so that I can send it to my lab for printing. I can't imagine having the image out of my control, where it could be printed by them, posted to Facebook or shared with others, so this option really doesn't sit very well with me!
I like to do what I can to make my clients happy, but may not be able to in this instance. However, what I was thinking, although I believe that I already know the answer, is adding a password protected, locked layer with my low opacity watermark over the image. Unfortunately, I can't think of anyway to achieve this password protecting of a layer. Sure I can lock a layer, but it can be turned off at will.
Can any one out there think of any other options or solutions, that will allow me to give my image to a client, and ensure that my watermark/copyright remain visible on the image during the entire time that they're editing it?

We can only make conclusions based on what little you have described. GIGO.
We're only left to addressing the foolishness of the shoot as there is nothing that can further be said about a ridiculous hope of software. Do we recognize the silliness in supposing that you could supply a file that is both editable and not editable?
Adobe already offers some security options in PDF files (preventing copying, printing, editing, opening, etc), which are easily defeated. Hold your breath to wait for this stunningly ineffective technology to make it to other Adobe apps.
As this is such an issue for you, it may be time to reevaluate the business model of prints as a significant portion of your service.  Home computers and Walmart's in-store photo printer have replaced most of your service, even if you forced the client to sign a piece of paper vowing not to duplicate.  Photographers really need to focus on and charge appropriately for the craft of photography (like employing guards on windy, rainy days) and not try to be intellectual property managers for an end product that they really cannot control anymore.
You can enter feature requests here and then wait a year or so for the release cycle. How soon does your client need prints?

My iPad was stolen. It is password protected and I locked it. So far no one has tried to turn it on. I would like to erase the content but am afraid that the "Find it' software would be diabled too. Can someone tell me if this is what happens?

If content is erased, then the ipad will no longer have  the Find My iPhone service turned on, hence can't be tracked.  But the thief will not be able to view your data/apps.  But thieves these days know about the service and can reset the device so that it is no longer tracked, although all data is erased anyway.  They don't care about getting at your data, only about keeping the device to sell or use it as their own.

  • Intel iMac, Open Firmware Password Protection and booting from CD

I have an Intel iMac I'm setting up for use in a public library. I want to prevent single user login with the Open Firmware Password Protection utility, but if I do, how do I boot from the OS disc, zap PRAM, etc? The OFPP page has instructions on removing the OF password, but it does not work on Intel Mac's. Also, is there an alternative way to prevent single user login?

No, you were right, I just misunderstood. Technically it's called single-user mode. But, you were right.
    Anyway,
Since it seems that there might not be an answer directly related to your topic you could maybe give this a try.
In Simple Finder the user can not restart or shutdown. They can only sleep and log out.
The other problem, however, is if they log out then there are those Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down buttons on the login screen. Luckily, though they can be turned off.
So as of now, if some is logged in in a Simple Finder account they can not restart or shut down the computer in order to get into single-user mode. They can also not get into the Administer account since it is password protected.
The only problem I can see with this is that a person could do a hard shut down, hold the power button down until it turns off, and then boot up and enter single-user mode.
If you want to go ahead and do this, in order to get the computer up and running in the mean time, just post back and I'll be glad to help you set up a Simple Finder account.

  • Password protect without imac

hi guys. i dont know squat, but i have a site i made with iweb 1.1.2. can i password protect my site without having imac? thanks in advance.

    Hi mjs273,
This should be no problem. I'm assuming you use iWeb to publish to a folder on your computer and then you upload the files to your web hosting company.
Most web hosts have an browser-based admin facility. Through that you should be able to setup password protection for your site or for just certain sections of the site.
For example, on the sites that I have hosted by DreamHost, I just click on Goodies / Htaccess / WebDAV. I select one of the domains. Then click Set Up a New Directory. From there I can choose to password protect that directory. Whatever options I were to select would also apply to any sub-directory.
Your exact steps will be a bit different (unless you are using DreamHost, of course)!

Sorry, no way to do that. You can passcode protect your phone, but not individual apps.

  • Is there anyway to password protect hidden photos in iPhoto

is there anyway to password protect hidden photos in iPhoto

is there anyway to password protect hidden photos in iPhoto
No, not selected photos within one library.
You could create a separate library for your secret photos and put this library on a password prtected sparse bundle, or keep this library in a separate user account.

  • Could someone please tell me how can I password protect individual folders?

    Hi
I use a MacBook Pro 17" with MacOSX(10.4.7) Could someone please tell me how can I password protect individual folders?
    Thanks
    Adnan Yousuf

    Adnan,
One way to do this is to use Disk Utility to make a password protected disk image of the folder(s) that you need to secure. This is probably the easiest way to do it.
Go to Disk Utility and choose "New Image" and select encryption.

  • Anyway to password protect Mail?

I would like to Mail to ask me for a password before opening....that way other users of my system won't be able to read my email....is this possible?

You just may have to log into and out of your computer each time you use Mail, if you are not on a network. But the newer Macs have the capapability of being able to have several users that log into and out of their own Desktops.
Although, this may help from Mail Help:
    "About Keychain passwords in Mail
When you set up a user account in Mac OS X using the Accounts preferences pane, a keychain is automatically created with the same password. Your keychain can store all the passwords you use to access different resources, including your passwords for the Mail application and for each email account. When you connect to a network server, open an email account, or access any password-protected item that is keychain-aware, your keychain provides the password so you don't have to type it.
Your keychain is unlocked automatically when you log in to Mac OS X. Use the application Keychain Access to manage keychain passwords.

  • Password protecting mail app and permanent deletion of emails so they don't appear in spotlight search

I realise that there is a temporary way to prevent this happening by unticking the 'mail' option in the spotlight search settings menu, but how do you permanently delete the emails? I assumed that when I hit delete then emptied the trash box, the mails were gone for good. But finding that they remain stored in some hidden place and can be easily accessed is very annoying! In fact, finding that other users can quickly change the settings back and have free access to my email is rather disturbing anyway, especially as there is no way to password protect my email account once i activate the mail app. the apple mail app is linked to my yahoo account, but within yahoo mail there seems to be no problem in regards to deleted mail being stored somewhere else, only within the apple app system.
So i guess id like to know, is there some way to password protect my account or do I just need to keep deleting my account before lending the ipad to someone else and then reinstating it? And is there any way to properly delete emails for good?
I would be happy just to go without the mail app and log in directly through yahoo in Safari, except that I find the notification alert when I receive a new mail very handy!!

[edit] I dragged the email I sent through the MBP Mail app (under MAILBOXES > Sent > Yahoo!) to the highlighted Sent folder (YAHOO! > Sent), and now it shows up on all Yahoo Sent folders (iPad app, web browser, phone app). Not entirely solved the issue but will use web browser to sent future emails to keep everything in sync.
