Anyway to get Tiger for old iBook G4?

I've just dusted off my old 2004, 10.3.9 iBook G4, reinstalled Panther from scratch and found it to be surprsingly serviceabe!
I'm now wondering if there's any way to get the 10.4 upgrade to Tiger. How would I go about finding that in 2012?

Used market.  See posts below (same goes for any old OS)

Don't expect to get it cheap, and do beware of non-retail versions which won't install on your computer.  People are very tempted to sell them but don' know (presumably) they aren't any good to most people.

  • How to get Tiger for my iBook

I have a 2 year old 14" iBook and would like to install OSX Tiger on it. I am not interested in putting Leopard on it.
I don't see Tiger on sale at the Apple Store and to be honest, I don't really want to pay full retail for an 'old' OS.
I see various versions on eBay but I'm not sure what to get. I'm also not sure about the ethics of buying some of these. I want to do this straight up and legal. I'd appreciate any advice.
Now, I do have a new 17" iMac and a one year old 20" iMac along with the install CDs that came with them. Is it possible and legal to upgrade my iBook to Tiger using those?

Well that would void your agreement and probably wouldn't work anyway. If the installers were gray they would be machine specific. You need the retail version. black with silver lettering.

I don't see anything wrong with buying an OS on eBay as long as it's not a pirate. However I would buy it on Craig's since I find them for a lot cheaper there.

  • How Can i get iTunes for My Ibook Clamshell Blueberry Mac OS 9.0 besides Ebay

Hi im The Son Of the Creator Of Gizmosapien, a podcast made in garageband and my internet is out im tethered to my iphone 5c and i dont have a airport card for my ibook so How Can i get iTunes for My Ibook Clamshell Blueberry Running Mac OS 9.0 besides Ebay? Please Help.
    Sincerely yours Son Of Gizmosapien.
    P.S. i have a Macbook Air 2011.

Sadly the iTunes Store was not released until Mac OS X. You'll need Mac OS X 10.1 and iTunes 4 minimum to get to the iTunes Store on your iBook G3 and the ability to download any podcasts from the store.   Since Mac OS X 10.1 wasn't that stable, and few software titles exist for it, I recommend upgrading to a minimum of 10.3.9 which supports iTunes 7.7.1.
Your Blueberry iBook may or may not be compatible with 10.4, as this tip explains:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2541
If you can get 10.4, you can get iTunes 9.2.1.
You will not be able to sync your phone with the iBook regardless of Mac OS X version.
Your iBook is too old to install an Airport Extreme card, so it can't securely hook up wirelessly to your wireless network.  You'll want a ethernet WiFi bridge that supports a minimum of 802.11g to hook up to the iBook via ethernet.  An Apple Airport Extreme base station can act as one as well via its LAN ports.

GB6 is the latest version, so all current docs should directly refer to that.

  • Does anyone know how I can purchase or download a copy of OSX 10.4 Tiger for an ibook g3?

I am trying to "upgrade" an old ibook g3 (800MHz)
I have managed to get it up to OS 10.2.8 with automatic updates, but I would like to install OSX 10.4 Tiger (The most advanced compatible os for this ibook), But I have not managed to find anywhere on www.apple.com where i can purchase a copy?
Is there anywhere I can buy the original installation dvd, or download a version?
    Many thanks for your help

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    It's available through Amazon Marketplace:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Mac-10-4-Tiger-VERSION/dp/B0002G71T0
Ask before you buy, ask the seller to make sure it's the FULL RETAIL version.
    Another option:
    http://www.megamacs.com/index.php?action=frameview&id=3986857   (Not a bad price.)
Also, Tiger usually came on a DVD. Some 800 MHz iBooks have just a CD-ROM drive, so you need to keep that in mind and determine whether you can use the DVD version.

  • Available software for old iBook & G4tower?

I inherited a 14 inch iBook from my mother running 10.4.11 & I also have an old G4 tower running 10.4.11 & OS 9. Is there any newer OS system I can install that would be compatible with either of these, and where would I get such a thing? What are the security risks accessing the internet using an older browser that I cannot update anymore? Does it hurt to browse sites as long as I avoid doing anything financial? Is there any point in try to update these older computers and still trying to use them. I have had no problem networking them with my newer iMac running Maverick. My husband would like to use the older computers to browse the internet for information on mountain climbing.

Mac OS X 10.5.8 is the newest system that will run on G4s as long as they are a minimum of 867 Mhz (dual processor 800 Mhz doesn't count, and 1 Ghz and higher are more than 867 Mhz).
The disadvantage is that unless the tower is the right model, you'll lose access to Mac OS 9:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1757 (tells you which towers can boot into 9 & 10.5).
The iBook G4 can only use Classic, which is gone in Mac OS X 10.5 and later.
Cloning the system to a Firewire external hard drive is possible to maintain the older operating system as it was before, with older versions of Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper, and should be done prior to any upgrade or software install anyway.  Except for the original PCI PowerMac G4 (which is too slow for 10.5 anyway), you can boot off Firewire hard drives Mac OS X.  A second internal hard disk on the tower for 10.4 is another possibility.  But Parallel ATA hard drives are getting scarcer for that option.  And may need a jumper to handle the slower bus speed.   Disk Utility can be used to format the drive Apple Partition map so the operating system can be installed.  GUID is not understood by most PowerPC 10.4 systems.
http://www.apple.com/usergroups/ is a good source for finding people with older software.   Otherwise it really is hit and miss with search engines such as C!Net & Macupdate.  Do not download MacKeeper or any system cache cleaning software, whatever you do.

  • Option Click Get Info for Old GUI?

The new GUI for Get Info in iTunes 12 is not only incredibly lacking but also an insult to long time iTunes users.
It makes the most simple of tasks become incredibly laborious.
For starters I am trying to add the "track x of x" field and cannot for the life of me find where to add that field to the new GUI.
Secondly, adding album artwork is ridiculous.  I either have to scan the cover of my CD I just ripped or search the internet for the image, download it to my computer then upload it into iTunes? For real?  lol.
So I googled and found many others like me questioning how iTunes 12 even came to be.... and they had a simple trick to bring back the old Get Info GUI.  Simply hold down the option key as you click "Get Info."
That worked for a day or so.  Now it doesn't work any more.  I didn't update any software since it worked the first time.
Can someone please let me know what I am doing wrong.  I simply want to use the old Get Info GUI rather than being forced to succumb to the major disaster iTunes 12 has turned out to be.
    Thank you.

    FWIW
    I'm running OS 10.9.5 and iTunes 12.1.0.5.
I'd change that in my profile/signature but why should that be an easy task as well?

  • Is Apple going to have an exchange program for ipods?  (IE Getting credit for old ipod for new one?_

    Apple exchange?

Another alternative is various retailers will give you store credit for older devices that work and you can use that credit towards your new device. Best Buy and Amazon (in the us anyway) give store credit and Radio SHack may also.
I'm sure there are various internet services of questionable honesty, but there are at least a couple very reputable companies. Best Buy gave me $70 for my like new condition iPod 4, so it was almost like getting 30% off the new one.
    Something you can look into.
If it's a non-functional device, then Apple's program could be your best bet since these companies want working devices that they can resell.

  • Installing tiger on an ibook w/o dvd, but using target disc mode?

so here is the problem. i bought tiger for my ibook (g3 500mhz 312 mb airport cd drive...) so i found out the hard way that i can not install tiger dvd on my ibook (it has a cd drive.) so i was thinking and booted it up in target disc mode on my g4 tower running 10.2.8 the hard drive came up on the g4 and i installed sucessfully tiger on to the ibook! i was really excited that it worked. (i really didn;t want to order the cd set from apple)
so i went to start and download updates and it didn't connect. so i went to configure the airport and had a ton of problems. it just won't! airport will not recgonize any networks, and i have done it all to configure it. the ibook sees the card too!
so i took the card out of the ibook and installe dit in tehg4 tower and bravo it works just fine, so the problem is not the card at all.
i then took the ibiik to firsttech (an apple store) and they booted it up in network mode and the card worked just fine! they think that because i installed tiger fro a computer that was not running an airport network that it did not install that part of the software. this i do not believe becaust all of the airport stuff is there to configure, the problem is it just won't.
so to make things more interesting the screen will freeze. and after that when i reboot the ibook the screen is dead. and it stays dead for a while so this is just a pain. i try to reboot it in target disc mode but the icon does not show up on the host computer. i can run system profiler and the g4 will see the ibook as a firewire device in target disc mode, but i just can't see it on the desktop. i can hear the hard drive running, and i get the chime so i know it is on.
so i know that the problem is probably tiger as i know that there have some problems with it. but i just don't get it. b4 i reinstall 10.2 can anyone give me any help fixing tiger?
    THANKS!
    SEAN
    g4 tower   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   ibook! g3 too
    g4 tower   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   ibook! g3 too

    Hi sean,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
You probably did the target-disk install the wrong way round. If you booted the G4 from the install DVD and from there installed Tiger to the G3 iBook you have installed the G4 hardware drivers which are not compatible with the iBook.
You have to do it this way:
Insert the install DVD into the G4. Start the G4 into target disk mode by holding down the t-key during boot. Connect the G4 to the iBook using a firewire cable. Now boot the iBook while holding down the option-key. This will bring you into the boot manager where you can select the install DVD as boot-volume.
Once the installer has started perform an Archive&Install to the iBook hard disk. This should solve your problem.
Remember: Repair permissions before and after an update!

  • Anyway to get a old backup for iPod?

Alright, so my ipod updated for some resion and now there are a lot of issues... and aparontly the last backup is still the 5.1.1, is there anyway to get an older backup? One of these problems is safari, along with apps. They should have just fixed themselfs but they did not...

There is no way to go back to a previous version of iOS.  iTunes backs up our data files (music, videos, apps and such), not the operating system....
If you were having problems BEFORE the update, you are going to have problems AFTER the update.
The deal is, Apple stuff just runs, period.  In my house there are 2 iPhone 4's, a 2nd gen Touch, a 4th gen touch, and a 5th gen iPod video.  They all work just fine.
We updated our iPhones and the 4th gen touch and don't have any problems what so ever.
There fore, I submit to you that either your iPod had issues right out of the box, you have installed an application or applications that are not completely compatible with iOS, or at some point your device was wiped and an alternate OS was installed, which may have damaged your device.
Oh, the word is apparently....  Just so ya know.

  • Old ibook has died; Can I get my thesis off hard-drive and on to macbook?

    Howdy,
My trusty old ibook has finally died (which is understandable; it is some six years old and has been around the world with me, and has served me well)... however, i didn't have the foresight to get some very important files (my thesis among them) backed up elsewhere...
When I attempt to turn on the ibook, the screen stays black, i hear one or two chirps, and then nothing... if i put my ear close, i can hear the extremely soft sound of something spinning (the harddrive, i assume).
I have attempted to access the ibook harddrive by connecting it to my new macbook via firewire and starting up the ibook while pressing "T", but to no avail; it does not appear on the macbook as a disk, or anything at all.
Is there anything else I can try to access the important data on my ibook, and transfer files onto my macbook? Thank you so much for any help and advice... it will be much appreciated!
    love,
    dewfall

    Dewfall:
Ronda's suggestion to try Disk Warrior is a good idea. Actually there are three excellent directory maintenance and repair utilities (including Disk Warrior): Tech Tool Pro, Disk Warrior and DriveGenius
These all do a great job of repairing directories and have revived many a seemingly dead HDD. TechTool Pro and DriveGenius do a number of other things, and even they you purchase one of these and it does not work, it is a good tool to have in your toolkit. I own both TechTool Pro and Disk Warrior and use one or the other at least monthly.
However, your main concern at the moment is to rescue your data, and if the drive is viable at all, placing it in an enclosure and connecting to another mac will help. The directions linked in my earlier post are very explicit and helpful. The enclosure linked there is the best price I have seen anywhere, and it does have the more reliable Oxford 911+ chipset. If you decide to remove the HDD here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx 8 screw driver is critical.
    • I use small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nest them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Use needle nose pliers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
Please do post back should you have further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • HT1727 My old computer died before i could put my new itunes purchases on it. Is there anyway to get them to my new computer? The hard drive somehow fried and is of no use.

I had just purchased like $30 worth of new songs and my old computer. two days later it died on me before i could upload them onto my ipod touch. i tired to get geek squad at best buy to transfer all of my music from my old computer to the new one but they said it could not be done since i somehow fried the hard drive. so i was wondering if there is anyway to get at least my newly purchased songs back? i got my old purchased songs off of the ipod i just want the new ones.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your comptuer for this very reason.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
