Anyway to go from camcorder to portable hard drive direct - no computer?

I'm planning a vacation where my family will likely shoot thousands of pics. I don't really want to carry my laptop in order to dump the images and I don't want to buy lots of memory cards. Is there any device out there that is essentially a portable hard drive that has built in software that will allow me to somehow download my images from my still cameras and even my movies without having to be attached to a computer? If not, this seems like a very real need for travelers.
Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Need help - downloading photos to portable hard drive

I've imported about 2000 photos from my iPhone to my Macbook Air.  I want to export them now to a portable hard drive but it's saying I don't have enough memory.  I was planning on deleting the photos on the MacAir afterwards anyway.
    Two questions:
1.) How do I move these photos to my portable hard drive, so I can then delete them on the hard drive?
2.) How do I bypass downloading to the MacAir next time, and move photos right from iPhone to portable hard drive?
I'm tech savvy on all things Windows, and have had Macs in the past, so I'm ready to pull my hair out over these novice questions.
    Help!

Have your recipients given you any more info than you've given us? The simplest thing for you to do is to capture your footage, get it in a timeline, then export as a QuickTime movie, which should be around 9 or 10 GB in size. Your PC friend would need to download QuickTime in order to view it.
There are tools available to convert to Windows Media or other formats. One of the best is MPEG Streamclip, which you can download here:
    http://www.squared5.com/
You'll need to be certain to format the hard drives properly (do this in Disk Utility): Mac OS Extended for your Mac friend, MS-DOS for your PC friend. There are issues with some PC drives and files over 2GB, so you may need to break your QuickTime movie into 9-minute segments.

  • Loading iTunes on portable hard drive

Hi, I've run into a problem that I can't seem to find an answer myself. I have a MacBook and have had my iTunes loaded on a Toshiba 250 GB portable hard drive. Everything was working fine when I wanted to play my iTunes I needed to have the portable hard drive connected to my MacBook. For some reason I had opened up iTunes without the portable hard drive and some how lost the connection setting that would have my MacBook look for the Toshiba portable hard drive and run iTunes from there. My question is...How do I set it up again so that my MacBook will run iTunes from the Toshiba portable hard drive? Is there anyone that can shed some light on how to solve my problem? Thanks in advance!

    Hi.
You need to go to iTunes preferences, choose Advanced, then change it there.

  • Can I download video SD cards directly into a portable hard drive?

I'm back to square one, i.e., no solution or answer.
I visited the Apple store with the intent of purchasing a LaCie portable hard drive.  It looks like an excellent unit.  I asked Apple personnel "can I directly plug in a microSD card (via adaptor) into this harddrive and download my videos?".  The answer "no, you need to use a laptop" as the intermediary download point.  This defeats the purpose of a hard drive.  I do not want to lug my MacBook along.  Result: no sale.
Does anyone have any 'real world' experience with 'an'y portable hard drive directly accepting video input via a microSD card ?  I apparently did not phrase my earlier question clearly enough.  Again, there will be no laptop available.
    thanx,
    bill

Assuming you're using Safari, the default download folder is specified in Safari>Preferences>General. Go there and you'll see where Downloads is currently selected. Click on that, select Other, navigate to the directory you want to use and click Select.

  • Installming on portable hard drive

According to the licensing agreement, I can also install the
Dreamweaver program on a portable storage drive -- which I have
done so that I can bring it to work and during my down time, work
    on some of my projects.
However, when I plugged in my portable hard drive to my
computer at work, and then try to open the program, it won't open
    -- it just sits there.
What is the problem -- what am I missing?
    Thanks for help!

IF the license agreement allows this, and I'm not sure it
    does, You will
need to "install" the program on both computers with your
    portable drive
attached for the computers to have the registrations entries
    that allow you
    to run the program.

  • How do I import music from a portable hard drive to my iTunes library?

I have a portable hard drive with music on it. I have been successful in Importing Files from that external drive to my iTunes library and can play the music on my PC. However, when I sync my iPhone in an attempt to load those new songs, those songs get the little !exclamation point! next to them and the message "Original File Cannot Be Found". What do I need to do to get these songs from the portable drive onto my iTunes library as permanently recognized files that will be sync'd to my iPhone. Any guidance is greatly appreciated....thanks

Connect the external drive and choose Consolidate Library from the Library section of the File menu, or open the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences and tell it to copy music to the iTunes music folder for future imports.

  • How do I delete files from a portable hard drive

I've been backing up my MacBook Pro on an external portable hard drive. I need to delete some but not all the files from that portable hard drive permanently. When I highlight them and click to move them to Trash I get a message telling me this cannot be done because they are Read Only files? How do I go about it. I am required by work to delete them off this hard drive. Do I have to reformat the hard drive? If so how do I go about it?

You can easily delete files from a Time Machine Backup:
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock.If the Time Machine icon isn’t in the Dock, look for Time Machine in the Applications folder.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through the backups Time Machine created. The windows behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to delete, select it, and then open the Action menu (looks like a gear) and choose Delete All Backups for the item.

  • Photos on my Mac show the wrong date when imported from a portable Hard Drive

I’ve got loads of photos that I had imported from my old PC.Last night I decided to start going through them and trying to get them sorted
prior to importing into iphoto. I discovered that some of the pictures (in particular ones I have taken from my old Iphone) all had the same date and time
assigned to them. When I checked the Exif details, it listed the correct camera etc, but the date created seems to have changed to the date I copied them to my portable hard drive.
I thought this was strange as when they were on my PC I thought they were correct. I booted my PC up and checked the portable hard drive on Windows. When viewed on my PC the pictures all have the correct time and date assigned to them. However when I plug the same portable hard drive into my Mac the same files show up as being created on a more recent date (say 20th Jan 2013).
I’ve done a lot of research last night, although I can find no forum with this exact problem, I feel it must have something to do with compatibility. The portable hard drive is FAT32, and I am assuming that in order to ensure all of the photos information is transferred correctly in needs to be NTFS.
The problem I have is how do I transfer my files again from my PC to an NTFS drive, whilst keeping all of the correct date and time information assigned to the photos. My understanding is that the 2 aren’t compatible.
Has anyone ever had this problem? It mainly seems to be with photos I have extracted from my Iphone or edited in some form by rotating them.
I have a 13" Macbook Pro Retina with OSX Mavericks installed.

What you may want to do is archive as a Zipfile the photos and then transfer them to the Mac.     It is possible some of the metadata is being lost on the FAT32 formatting.    USB Flashdrive might work better than a FAT32 formatted hard drive, as I do know that most USB Flashdrives are formatted about the same as SD media cards, which manage to preserve the data when copied from camera to Mac.    My big question is, do you still have the photos on media cards?  You might just want to get a media card reader on your Mac, if the photos are not on SD cards, and transfer them over with the media card reader.
I do believe Retina MacBook Pros all have SD card readers built-in.
Note: I've asked this be moved to the MacBook Pro forum.  MacBook without the secondary name refers to the consumer notebook Apple stopped making in 2011.

  • Is it possible to run Adobe CC apps from a portable hard drive on multiple computers?

I work at a  university that is not purchasing the Adobe CC license for it's labs. As far as  I know Adobe will not create a deal that structures the fees in a way that makes it possible the University to buy into the CC platform.
This puts me a a tough spot as a person who teaches digital media in a University setting.  Teaching legacy software (Adobe CS 5) puts our students at an immediate disadvantage.
To get around this issue, I have come up with the idea of having students purchase Adobe CC license short term (or longer if they like) as a textbook. However my lab administrators don't think there is a reasonable way to do this.  Right now students would have to log into their User space on the University system, download software each time they came to class.  This would not work for many reasons.
Is there a way to make  Adobe CC portable, so students can download their own CC software and carry it around with them on a portable hard drive?
Would a system have to be installed on the portable drive or is there a way to run the software from a hard drive using the system on the computer it is attached to?
FYI the students and instructors have have no access to the computer systems, ex administrator or / root, level of the computers.  Adding software and/or drivers can take months.  Given time , I can get our IT folks to add a limited amount of structure to the system to make it possible for students to use Adobe CC from a portable hard drive if such a solution exists.
Thanks for your thoughts on this .
FYI the labs I need to MAC labs running OS 10.7.X (2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 - 4 GB RAM - 1 TB HDD) -

    THe long answer is no.

  • I have moved all of my music from my laptop to a portable hard drive...need help :( cant play music

    Hi all,
I moved all my music from my laptop to a portable hard drive, my hope was that i could just plug and play into my mabook air not the case...
I was wondering if anyone could help with the following, in a perfect world i would love to be able to keep the music on my drive (there is about 500 gb worth) and then when i want to play through mac to apple tv be able to just plug into mac and then be good to go, or if poss for itunes to be able to recognise the music on my portable drive...and for me then to play through itunes without adding it (as there wouldnt be enough space)...and to also have the capability to plug the drive into my windows comp and be able to also still play from there.
I dont know if any of this is poss...it all seems really complicated to me...and i am new to mac.
If anyone thinks they could help please get in touch!
my main goal is to be able to play my music through apple tv to the surround system in the house, and to be able to play music through my mac if poss, doesnt have to be itunes so long as i can air play or even better select through apple tv.
thanks so much in advance to anyone who can help me out
p.s. i tried this...didnt work, unless i am doing it wrong

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Do not confuse (as you did) moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

  • HT2090 how to transfer files from a portable hard drive to another

I tried to transfer some files from one portable hard drive to another but I cant seem to transfer anything.but hard drives are under the NTFS thingy. The brand of the hard drive is WD.pliz help...

Your HDDs are formatted for windows.  There is software available that will allow you to use them with your MBP.  It has received mixed reviews and you will have to use Google to find it.  Perhaps someone else will give you specific information on same.
The other option is to reformat the HDDs to be compatible with your MBP using Disk Utility, but that will erase the user data.

  • How do I transfer data/videos from a Mac-OS formatted portable hard drive to a Windows-formatted portable hard drive?

I was trying to drag-and-drop the contents (most of them are downloaded torrent movies) of my Mac-OS formatted portable hard drive to my Windows-formatted portable hard drive. It didn't work. How do I go about this?

    Hi FornPLAY,
Your Mac will not be able to write to an NTSF formatted drive, as Mac OS X only supports reading from NTSF natively. You have a few options to be able to use that Windows formatted drive.  You could try reformatting the drive using Disk Utilty to a format like MS-DOS (FAT).  That would allow for both Mac and Windows cross-compatibility.
