Anyway to set a HEX WEP password on the airport extreme?

The input area only allows you to enter 13 characters and doesn't accept the 26 hex ones required. Any other way to do this? I have the current version of the utility and firmware for my box. I also have other vendors ap's that already have the hex code so I need to keep it the same. Thanks.

wavesonar, Welcome to the discussion area!
Do you have the round 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or the square 802.11b/g/n AEBS?
I'm confused by what you are attempting to do. The AEBS is creating the wireless network. Therefore it is in control of the WEP password. You can enter the password you want.
Are you trying to get the AEBS to join a wireless network? This will only work if your wireless network is created by another AEBS or an AirPort Express (AX) and they are both configured to use WDS.

  • What is the username and password for the airport extreme router

I just switched from a wired router to an airport extreme and im trying to access the router information by typing in my router into the search bar of safari, when I used my old router the username and password was admin, admin. but this isnt the case with the airport extreme, does anyone know what the username and password combination is for airport extreme?

Unlike routers from most other manufacturers, Apple's Airport devices cannot be configured using a web browser pointed to the IP address of the Base Station. Any manual configuration of the Airport Base Station must be done using the Airport Admin Utility provided by Apple.
FYI, when using the Airport Admin Utility the default password for the Airport Base Station is the word "public".

  • Setting Up Comcast to Work with the AirPort Extreme Base Station

I just set up Comcast high-speed internet through the cable modem and ethernet connection and it works fine. What I need is a step by step instruction on how to set up the connection through my AEBS. I've tried to configure using the Admin Utility, the AirPort Set-Up Assistant, the Network panel---all with no success. I'm not sure what to enter in the boxes or what to check. I've read the "Designing AirPort Networks" PDF and it wasn't much help.
The AirPort Network was working fine with the dial-up connection I had before.

    Voila! NOT!!!
I'm having the same problem trying to set up a friend's "new" Macs, and I cannot get them connected to the internet. I've also followed the same steps. I tried the resetting trick (unpluging, waiting, repluging the modem first, then the Airport Extreme Base Station.)
The DSL ISP is SBCGlobal. Their dsl modem is SpeedStream 5100. The AirportEBS is the about 4 year old white base station with the phone jack, and a WAN and a LAN ethernet ports. I'm trying to connect two iBooks and a MacMini.
Everything did fine for the past year with the modem in "regular" mode and only ONE Mac connected. When the new Macs were recently acquired, SBC techs said that the modem needed to be put into PPPoE mode so that multiple Macs could be connected at the same time. This was done. [The techs said in regular moden the modem does the authentication; in PPPoE mode the modem acts as a bridge and the AirportEBS is the router and provides the authentication. I am assuming the techs are coreect, but I don't know for sure.] The CAT5 ethernet cable from the modem goes into the WAN port on the AEBS. The computers all see the local wireless network set up by the AEBS.
However, when any of the Macs try to connect to the internet, the error message returns "No PPPoE server available." Resetting the modem and base station has not cured this. [n.b. Bypassing the AEBS completely by connecting the CAT5 cable from the modem directly to the Mac will provide internet connection.] Any other ideas? Sounds like both of us are having the same sort of problem.

  • How do i set up time capsule to work with airport extreme base to extend wireless network?

i have a airport extreme base, how do i set up a time machine to extend the wireless network i have with airport extreme? i have also 3 airport express's connected to the same network to extend my wifi all over my house. thanks in advance.

    Much better graphics, thanks.
You can leave the Time Capsule connected by Ethernet from the Linksys and configure for a "roaming" network as mentioned previously.
To do this, open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the AirPort Extreme
No check mark needed next to Allow this network to be extended
Radio Mode = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme
    Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon, then the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and allow the Time Capsue to restart
Then power down the entire network
    Wait a minute or two
Start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme the same way
    Power up the switch
Power up the Time Capsule for a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart
Now, your computer will automatically pick up a wireless signal from either the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, whichever device is closer and providing the stronger signal.

  • How do I get the user name and password for the Apple Extreme Router to connect to a Slingbox

How do I get the user name and password for the Apple Extreme Router to set up my Slingbox?  It will not accept the Apple Extreme Name and password.

The AirPort Extreme does not have a User Name, but it does have a device name and device password, which you may have already tried.
There is also a Wireless Network Name and Wireless Network Password for the AirPort Extreme, which might be what the Slingbox is looking for if you are trying to connect it to your wireless network.
There are no other "user names" or "passwords" on the AirPort Extreme.
You established the device name, device password, wireless network name and wireless network password when you originally configured the AirPort Extreme.
If you cannot remember these, you will need to perform a Soft Rest to reset everything. Follow the instructions in this Apple support document:

  • Can i set up an access password for the ipod on my ipad 2?

I purchased an Ipad 2 for my son to use in his therapy for autism. He knows how to use it and knows that we have purchased shows and movies for him to watch in the car. Well now that is all he wants to do. I am wondering if there is a way that I can set up a password to access the ipod. If he cant get into the ipod to see shows and movies he will be fine with just playing the games we have for his therapy. I have looked online and have not had much luck finding an answer to this question. So again can someone please tell me if there is a way to set up an access password for the ipod on the ipad2??????

Have you got Home Sharing set up (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819) ? i.e. he may be viewing the content from your computer, not on the actual iPad. If that is the case (which would explain to me him being able to access the videos via the iPod app), then the Restrictions settings that I've already mentioned should also work on that 'remote' content.
Edit : your last reply appeared whilst I was typing/checking this. And no, the Videos/iPod apps can't be passcode protected, you will need to go back into Restrictions and remove the restriction, or if the films are only on your computer and not on the iPad itself you could turn off home sharing on the iPad whilst he's playing the games : Settings > iPod and tap on your account id and/or password on the right under Home Sharing and delete it/ them (re-enter them when you want to re-enable it).

  • When attempting  to set a password on my Airport Extreme guest network i get this "Advertising a service globally using Bonjour requires a global hostname." What can i do to set password on this network?

When attempting to set a password on my Airport Extreme Guest Network i get this "Advertising a service globally using Bonjour requires a global hostname." What does it mean. Or what i need to do to correct it.

When trying to troubleshoot my problem I discovered a forum that was saying certain NTFS drives work just fine
Apple support says that an NTFS or exFAT drive cannot be used when connected to the AirPort Extreme.
I suppose it is possible that someone might have been using some type of special software on the drive that might perform a "conversion", but without more details, it is hard to know.
Note: ExFAT and NTFS formats aren't supported.

You have to do a "soft reset" on the Extreme ...  push in the reset button on the back of the Extreme for 10 seconds then release it -
I believe you meant to write for one full second.
Ten seconds will result in a "hard reset" and the need to recofigure it completely.

  • How/where do I find the password/passphrase on airport extreme to set up printer?

I am trying to set up my printer, and I have the Airport Extreme router. It asks for a password/pass phrase and states that it should be ont he bottom of the router. I have tried every number and letter that is on the bottom of the router and still I can't get the printer set up. It keeps stating that I have the wrong WPA password. Anyone know where I can find this WPA password?

It's the same one you use when connecting to your wireless network with a computer, and no, it's not printed anywhere on the Extreme.
If you are using a Mac that you use with that Extreme, I have a way to determine it.
If not, you will need to reconfigure your Extreme with a WPA password you remember.
Let me know which procedure you would like.

btam, Welcome to the discussion area!
The first thing to do is DISABLE PPPoE on your Mac. Since your AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) will be handling PPPoE, your Mac doesn't need to do it.
Next configure the AEBS to connect to your ISP using PPPoE. You can see where to enter the PPPoE information by looking at Page 33 in the "Designing AirPort Networks" (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPortNetworks.pdf).

  • Setting up network with newer and older AirPort Extremes

Okay, I thought this was going to be so simple. I have a newer (like a year old - square) Airport Extreme that I have three computers wirelessly hooked up to in the house. Great... so now, I want to hook up the old iMac in my son's room that doesn't have a wireless card to the network. It is too far away to use the ethernet cable into the back of my newer Airport Extreme station so I figured I'd dust off the old saucer type base station, plug the ethernet cable into that in my son's room and then just easily get the old base station to network with the newer one wirelessly.
Not so easy. The newer one has no reference how to make a network with other base stations whatsoever and the old book describes how to with the Airport Admin Utility which is not available to the newer version, just Airport Utility and it does not have the WDA options listed. I tried to extend the network and then Doh! The whole network disappeared.
Is this a compatibility issue with the older and newer base stations? Would it just be easier to put in a wireless card to my very old iMac, if that's even possible? Has anyone successfully networked an old and new base station together? If so how?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions!
When you have an older "g" device (the flying saucer) and a newer "n" device (the square one) in order for them to communicate using wireless only, you must configure both of them in what is known as WDS configuration.
This is a quite tricky setup for most users. The best set of instructions that I've seen for this comes from expert user Tesserax in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355832&tstart=0
If you elect to try this type of setup, you will probably need to hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Wireless Mode selection box to get the WDS option to appear. (My guess here is that Apple "hides" it because it slows down the network substantially). But, it's the only way to do what you want to accomplish with and old and new device.
Other options would include the wireless card you mentioned for the iMac. Even better might be a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. One adapter goes near the AirPort Extreme and the other near the iMac. The AC wiring in your home transmits the ethernet signal of the powerline. Works great, almost no configuration required and better than wireless in many cases.

  • How do I prevent other Mac users from changing my Airport Extreme Network Name and Password within the Airport Utility?

How do I prevent other Mac users from changing my Airport Extreme Network Name and Password within the Airport Utility?  My company is using an Airport Extreme in our office now and I want to prevent other employees from messing with the network/settings.  Is there a way to place a password on the settings to allow only the admin to access the network name and password?

Hi - you have will have to change the device passwords on all the base stations and then don't give them to anyone except the administrators and tell them not to save them on their computers that use the older versions of the Airport Utility - for the newer versions like the mobile apps, as soon as you enter the pasword it is saved and is visible in the advanced pane along with the network password - so if anyone gets a hold of your iPad or iPhone, they can edit the whole network - I have this same issue with my networks in the office and it is inconvenient but doable - I hope this helps

  • Can you set up a portable hard drive on airport extreme

is there a way to set up a portable hard drive on the AirPort Extreme using windows?

FWIW, I currently have a number of WD My Passport portable USB HDDs attached to both my AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule base stations.
In order for either base station to share out this HDD, the drive needs to be formatted in either HFS+ or FAT16/32. It can't share NTFS or ExFAT formatted drives.
Once a properly formatted drive is attached to the base station's USB port, you would use the AirPort Utility to configure it for sharing. Once that is done, Windows treats these drives just like any other network shared drive. That is, they can be accessed using the following format: //servername/sharename. In this case, the "servername" is the base station's Base Station Name, and the "sharename" is the HDD's volume name.

  • Can I set the MTU size for the Airport Extreme?

Can I change the MTU size setting of the Airport? How would this be possible? In my Linksys router I was able to change this.

Since the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not modify the packets in any way. So as neptune2000 stated, there is no MTU setting. Whatever MTU your computer broadcasts with is unchanged by the AEBS.
You will need to configure the MTU on the computer sending the packets.
