Anyway to tell if Mail loses connection to server?

Is there anyway short of opening the Apple Mail app every so often to tell if you are connected to your Mail server? The Mail dock icon doesn't change no matter if you're connected or not. This is very frustrating since I seem to lose my connection to the mail server at least 4-5 times a day and if i never opened the Mail app i'd never know i wasn't able to receive mail. Apple should include some visual feature on the Mail dock icon that alerts the user immediately that the connection is lost.

There is no constant connection with the incoming mail server for any email account with the Mail.app. The Mail.app connects to the incoming mail server for an account when the account is automatically or manually checked for new mail only.
Having an email account taken offline by the Mail.app (if there is a problem communicating with the incoming mail server for an account for whatever reason when the account is checked for new mail) and losing connection to your wireless network are completely separate/different things.
If you don't mind me asking, what business are you in or what are you expecting via email that is so important which requires checking for new mail every minute of every day or at least while the Mail.app is launched and running? Sorry but I can't imagine anyone or anything so important that requires doing so but even if you have it set to check every 5 or 15 minutes will have no effect on losing a connection to a wireless network.
Where is your AE base station located in relation to your iMac - in the same room or in different rooms upstairs/downstairs, etc.? When connected to your wireless network, is the Airport signal strength indicator strong? Does this occur when the computer goes to sleep, during use or both?
Have you posted this in either the Airport & AE or the iMac Intel forum since your actual problem has nothing to do with the Mail.app. Any lost connection to your wireless network warning should come from elsewhere.

    This problem affects many (including myself) and seems to be a bug in the integration of the FB app in iOS 7.
    You can get around the login problem by turning Settings/Privacy for FB off. However, after you turn that Privacy setting back on after logging in, then iOS 7 will continue to pester you with pop-up messages to enter the password in Settings. This will invariably fail with the error message that you have already experienced, but at least it gives a way of logging in.
    The solution will in my view have to come jointly from Apple and FB.

    Ensure you have a active interenet connection, once thats verified and the problem still exists. Go into settings>Mail,Contacts,Calender click on the account in question, delete it, then re-add it.

    I just purchased through verizon Iphone 4s and I kept getting the following message when trying to receive mail;
    "cannont connect to server"
    Everything looks like it is set up correctly.
    I have wi-fi turned on and I turned it off and now it connects.  Is this how icloud mail works? (with w-fi turned off)

    Same problem. I just tried switching wifi off and then the iCloud mail worked. Trouble is I have the same problem on my iPad and I need to use wifi for that. Can anyone help?

    Do you use SSL conection for mail?
    If yes, probably you need a certificate from your company to avoid this behaviour.
    Search for certificates from your company installed at Internet Explorer in your work computer. Export it to a file, and send to you own mail account.
    Open the mail from your iPhone and click it. It will install this profile.

  • Client Macs lose connection to server after Sleep

    Ok, so my previous issues with disk I/O erroros with contacts/Mail etc appears to be resolved after I re-installed ML Server and ML clients on all my macs -- not entirely sure why but now I have new problem where client macs lose connection to the server after sleep
    So my current setup is as follows:
    Server Mac
    Mac Mini Server running ML 10.8.2 Server
    Client Macs
    2 x MBAs with 10.8.2 (Core2Duo & iCore5)
    1 x Mac Mini running 10.8.2 (Core2Due, 4GB 2.4 Ghz etc)
    Issue:
    If I leave the client Mini logged in say, as me and either the mini goes to sleep (or if I put it to sleep) and then I wake the mini up, I appear to lose connection to the server - so whilst I am still logged in as me, I've lost my connection to my home directory e.g. Doc/Music/Pics (I can see instantly my desktop picture defaults to ML galaxy picture, opposed to something I've chosen) folders are no longer present. So obviously as mailbox,iphoto & itunes libraries are missing, Mail, iPhoto & iTunes fail to operate and I my only course of action is to log out and log back in and everything is fine.
    I get the same issue - although not as frequent - on MBA's when you close it and results in having to log out and in again to resolve the issue. I also saw the same problem when it was running Lion as well.
    A couple of things to note:
      - Server Mini is never asleep and is running 24x7 (as its a media streamer as well)
      - Its only occured when in deep sleep -  so if I wake the mac up after a few seconds of sleep, its just fine but if say I leave it overnight and wake it in the morning, its no longer connected.
    Any pointers will be welcome and given that it appear to have occured on a client Mac with Lion as well, it would imply its an issue with the server rather the individual client Macs. Also note, I don;t recall the problem when running Lion Server.

    Have you tried looking at the server logs, particularly the 'System' & 'Open Directory' log sets?
    Anything seen in there?
    Also logs on the client machines using the Console app. It's a bit tedious going though logs but they can be very illuminating.

  • MAIL NOT CONNECTING TO SERVER

    Over the past few days I've noticed that Mail isn't connecting to my mail server.
    Mail does connect when its first launched, but then won't connect when scheduled. If I quit from the software and re-launch, Mail connects and then the same thing happens again.
    I've tried restarting and everything else I can think of, but this doesn't make any difference.
    This can't be a server problem otherwise Mail wouldn't connect at all. Plus I've noticed that this happens from several different machines in several different locations.
    I've noticed that a few other people have had the same problem but no-one seems to be able to come up with an answer.
    Can anyone help?

  • Mail stops connecting to server to receive mail

    Hello all,
    I have two machines that have problems connecting to server and receive mail. One is a desktop with 10.5 (+updates) and another is a laptop with 10.5 (+updates).
    The desktop is located locally in windows network. It is connecting to a Windows 2003 Standard server with Exchange 2003 Enterprise (+updates). Mail application is configured with IMAP account. After awhile Mail application stops connecting to the server. Connection Doctor window shows attempting to connect. Once the server name is changed to IP address of the server, the mail program can connect fine.
    Server responds to a ping command with domain name, I can login through telnet and send the email while mail application is stuck connecting. It takes a long time to verify SMTP server name when the account is configured.
    Same happens to the laptop but it is connecting through internet. There are Outlook clients that do not have any issues connecting (configured with IMAP).
    Any suggestions as to what could be the problem?

    Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
    Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
    Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
