AOL & Automator

I have delayed upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion (and iCloud) because I have a vast number of e-mail messages saved using AOL for Mac OS X, which is a PowerPC application that will not work with Lion.  Now that MobileMe is set to expire in a few days, my time has run out.  I want to save these messages, which are currently saved to my hard drive in AOL mail format, in text format (that is, "Save as" text, using the drop-down menu in the open/save dialog box).  (The newer versions of AOL software which are compatible with Lion are unable to open the old AOL for Mac OS X mail messages, although they cann open them as text, as can Apple Mail.)  I have many, many hundreds of these messages.  Is there a way I can use Automator to save them in text (versus "mail") format in one fell swoop?  They are all saved to various subfolders (by correspondent's name) within a large "E-mails" folder.  Please note that they have been saved as individual mail messages to my hard drive, and are no longer in my AOL incoming mail cabinet or personal filing cabinet, so that I can't simply import them from that cabinet into Apple Mail.  And as they're currently saved, Apple Mail can't read or open them until they're re-saved as text.  I have never used Automator before, and tried to experiment using Record, but whenever I choose "Save" or "Save as" from within AOL, the Automator window disappears and the Recording stops.  Perhaps it thinks I am trying to "save" the Automator workflow, rather than trying to record the saving of a file in the Finder?  In the alternative, if there is some easy way to simply convert these saved AOL files into Apple Mail files, that would be great, too, but I don't think there is.  Can anyone help?  I only have eight more days until MobileMe expires and I have to upgrade to iCloud and therefore to Lion, which will render these needed files unreadable in their current form, so I am desperate.  Thanks very, very much.

Hi RobHicksUK!
I haven't started using Automator yet, so I don't know if this will help, but looking at the preset Mail automations, it appears that it might help, to first configure the Apple Mail application, for AOL Mail.
You can do that with this utility AOL Services Assistant.
I think then, there may not even be a need to load, or log in to the AOL Client.
Just a thought. What do you think?

  • Exporting to AOL pictures problem

    Hi All,
When I first downloaded aol pictures, there is an option to install a plugin to export from iphoto 08. This used to work until i purchased an hp all in one c4280 and I installed the software from the hp website.
Now when I go to file->export from iphoto, I see the hp software but not the aol. I know the AOL plug in is still installed. Any Idea why i cant export to AOL pictures?
    Thanks
    Mark

    Mark:
It appears that the AOL plugin is not compatible with the Hp one. Try removing the Hp plugin and try again.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Problems sending AOL emails (in UK)

I have had my Iphone for about 6 months now with no major problems but for the past few weeks I have been unable to send emails from my AOL email address. I also have a Googlemail address and this wirks fine, any suggeestions??
When trying to send an email it states
"the connection to the outgoing server "stmp.aol.com" failed"
this displays twice (ie you ok the 1st one and it appears again)
I ahve checked the settings and nothing has changed from when it used to work, the details
Settings/Mail/AOL/outgoing mail server is "stmp.aol.com" with other STMP servers marked on.
Any ideas, as I have deleted the account several times and re-installed but to no avail, any suggestions??

    Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies.  This is running on OSX client, not server and no authentication is required.
I did figure out a way to make it work late yesterday.  I'm not sure if this is the "right way" or not, but it seems to do the trick.
In the automations tab in the system prefs panel of FCS, I went to "Assets Ready for Review [email]" and clicked through to the Responses screen.  Here the "From" field was left blank.  I put in a dummy email, and it worked just as advertised!
Michael, is this where you said to leave it blank and let FCS fill in the address?  If so, where does it pull the address from?  Can I have it pull from a metadata field and put the person that was working on the projects email in there, so the reviewer can respond to that real email instead of the dummy one that I used?
    Just a thought....
    Thanks again.

  • I cannot access my AOL email via Firefox- just started Wednesday night... hae done updates- but when try go thru "feedback" of Mozilla- tells me must update to latest version- which I am running

cannot get my AOL email via Mozilla- have not had issue before- started and did update to newest version- when sign in to mail- just churns til it items out

This is bad - I have an Apple automated response that they got my report on 12/6, 12/10 and 12/14, and I haven't heard anything from them since the 6th when I got one reply that told me to do things I tried before reporting the problem. Between the 6th and 10th I replied to their response 4 times and they ignored me, forcing me to report a problem with two more items that wont download but getting no response.
How do they get away with this kind of behavior, especially for someone with FIVE Core 2 Duo macs and thousands of dollars of of iTunes store purchases? I'm getting really ******.

  • Unable to use AOL Desktop Browser

    Hi,
The last couple of days we've been unable to use the AOL Destop Browser with a BT connection. My mother prefers this browser despite advising her to use Chrome/Firefox/IE several times but now she is unable to. I phoned AOL and was told following some sort of recent BT server update AOL were blocked. I contacted BT but they were unable to help. Not sure why it was necessary to block AOL but yeah, for my mother's sake it would be good if we could use the AOL browser again.
    Thanks

    Hi.
You imply she was able to use the AOL browser until a couple of days ago.
The AOL browser may have some dedicated settings, aimed purely at AOL users. Things like automated configuration settings and all sorts of things could be set (tools/internet options in IE).
Not sure about the BT server update, and would question whether AOL are just fobbing you off.
Frankly things do change, and moving ISPs can mean a new learning curve for some - particularly from AOL with their own stuff. Might be worth getting her to try Firefox (for e.g.) again. If the AOL browser isn't going to work, then she'll have to.

  • Incoming AOL mail in Mac MAIL Inbox disappears after a week

I´ve setup my AOL e-mail accounts in Mac MAIL. Receiving and sending mail via my AOL accounts works fine, but incoming mail will stay only for one week in the Incoming mail folder of Mac MAIL. After one weeks it disappears from the Incoming mail folder and it´s not longer available in MAIL at all. (I can only access it throught the AOL software or AOL Communicator themself, where it´s archived.). Sent (AOL) mail on the other side is still available in the Sent folder of MAIL. Is there any way to keep/store the Received AOL mail in Mac MAIL?

I don't know if this will help, but, in your AOL Preferences > Mail: under Automation, do you have the two options below checked?
    Save the mail I read
    Save the mail I send
Also, in AOL Preferences > Filing Cabinet: do you have Automatically delete items in my filing cabinet checked, and Never selected, in the contextual menus below?

  • Cannot send mail to AOL

    Hi-
My emails sent to AOL emails are getting rejected.

Anyone have this happen or know what to do about it?

This error message is a dynamic block on our system. Dynamic blocks are placed on an IP address when the IP's statistics break our threshold. These are automated blocks that are removed by the system within 24 hours once the complaints are again below the threshold.
I work in a small photo studio and I need to send emails to people with AOL accounts.  I sent 4 emails yesterday, one to AOL.  Today I sent 2 emails to AOL accounts and got blocked!
What the ****?  I've already got phone calls from both of these people askink where their promissed emails are.  Who do I complain too?  I do I tell are clients that they are stupid for using a crappy email service?  Meanwhile my boss thinks I'm an idiot because I use a Mac and not a PC
Isn't there something I can do besides waiting for a 24 hour block  by some unknown complainer???

  • HTMLDB_MAIL.SEND to AOL addresses

Many of my apps engage the HTMLDB_MAIL.SEND procedure to send automated e-mail notifications. I've found that e-mails sent via this procedure do not reach aol.com addresses. I looked on AOL's web site and found the following policy:
America Online, Inc. ("AOL") does not authorize the use of its proprietary computers and computer network (the AOL Network") to accept, transmit or distribute unsolicited bulk e-mail sent from the Internet to AOL members. In addition, Internet e-mail sent, or caused to be sent, to or through the AOL Network that makes use of or contains invalid or forged headers, invalid or non-existent domain names or other means of deceptive addressing will be deemed to be counterfeit.
I am guessing that the headers coming out of HTML DB are invalid. Any one have any ideas as to how I can change the header and pass muster with AOL? I'm thinking if I change the "from" line it could solve the problem.
    Thanks.
    Bill

By the way, this is a header from an HTML DB email. Anyone know what the phrase "misconfigured sender" means?

  • Uploading pics fro iphoto to AOL

Hi-I have read through some of the other threads concerning this issue and still no success. Appreciate if someone can walk through how I can send attach pics from iphoto to Aol email.
When I am in AOL email and trying to attach the pic, iphoto will not let me attach.
Before I go out and setup a bunch of accounts to test are there other free email programs that work seem less with iphoto
    Appreciate any help
    Thanks

    iHustler
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
In iPhoto -> Preferences -> General select AOL from the 'Email Using...' drop down. Now select a pic in iPhoto and click on the email button (or go Share -> Email) and iPhoto will create an email in AOL for you, with the pic attached.
Other than that if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Also, as a 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.

  • Aol e-mails stopped opening in standard mode

Aol e-mails stopped opening in standard mode. Have to use basic or accessible modes. Tried opening Aol e-mail through Explorer and it opened in standard mode. I'm assuming this is then a Foxfire issue. What happened and can it be fixed?

    Bill,
My apps have been sending me automated e-mails using
the HTMLDB_MAIL.SEND procedure to my comcast.net
account for over a year. I have never had much of a
problem, although AOL accounts are another story.
Today, these e-mails suddenly stopped getting
through. I did a fair bit of testing and my Yahoo and
corporate accounts are getting the same e-mails and
    unaffected.
I have contacted Comcast to see if they
had changed their filtering somehow and they are
looking into it. It's not a question of filtering as
the e-mails never get to my account to begin with. This could be a case of RBL blocking - (Realtime Blackhole Listing). There are companies out there that take spamming complaints from all over the world and put certain service provides on these RBL lists. If there happened to be a spike in spam originating from the comcast.net domain that domain may have gotten black-listed. Generally, it's up to the service provider to prove to the RBL lister that they have dealt with the offending spammer before they're removed from the blacklist.
    Just a tought.

  • AOL mail gets smaller periodically, used to be able to go to File/Zoom/reset. This bar is gone. Help

There was a toolbar in the upper right of my screen before I installed the new Firefox upgrade today, 3/24/11
Intermittently, my AOL mail list would become small (I do not have AOL installed but use the browser to get there)
I would go to File, then Zoom, then Reset and the mail would enlarge again
How can i get that toolbar back?

    Neal,
I am in the same predicament. I would essentially like to accomplish the same deal, as seen below. . . (from another forum that went unanswered.)
I use iCal (1.5.5/ 2.0.3) currently but own Entourage (11.2.1) as well. I have clients that I service on a weekly or biweekly basis whose appointments are in my iCal; I call and remind them the day before. The majority of these people are great about checking email. I would like to set up an automated email reminder which is sent to them for each appointment, two days in advance that does not contain an .ics file. Many times my clients' email app has junked the message due to the small attachment. Others don't want to open a file when they don't know what it is.
Predetermined timed stamped/Automated iCal events are possible aren't they?! If not, do I have to move over to :dreaded Entourage?

    Hi Tom,
    Thanks for the suggestion.
Yes, I am working on Windows. As you suggested, I compiled .rc file but the compile option for .r file was disabled. After compiling the .rc file, I again rebuild the complete project and tested my build. But still I was not able to achive the desired result.

  • How restore aol sent mac mail from time machine?

I am using mac mail and an imap connection to aol.  I also have a time capsule and use time machine for backing up. Yesterday I stopped receiving incoming mail in mac mail and tried deleting the aol account in mac mail and then setting it up fresh.  I was shocked to find that my 25,000 AOL sent emails did not restore! I was told by an apple genius bar rep several months ago that once mail was on my machine that the emails would NEVER be lost.  Apparently this is not true.  When I open mac mail and go into my time capsule using time machine, however, do not see the SENT mail icon under AOL--it goes away?  When I try to restore the aol mail from the day before the incident the only thing that comes up is the one Sent Mail mssg that I sent AFTER the deleting and restoring of my AOL account in mac mail. The only relevant post I have found is the one below which was posted in 2008.  Please let me know there is a way to get back my sent messages.  I can't get them directly from the aol server because the server does not save messages that are sent from any client but AOL. Thanks.

Restoring Apple Mail and Your Emails from Time Machine
filed under: How-To tags: mail, timemachine Tuesday, January 29, 2008, 11:31 am
UPDATE (25 August 2010): Please note that this post is well over 2 years old and as Tim pointed out in the comments below, this method may not be the best solution for restoring emails. According to his restore efforts, changes where made to the timestamp from the date in which they were received to the date in which they were restored. I have not tested this myself.
The hard drive on my PowerBook completely died the other day, but I luckily had been running Time Machine backups since upgrading to Leopard. (I wasn’t all that ****** off seeing as I was eager for an excuse to replace my wimpy 40Gb hard drive with a new 160Gb drive). I fumbled a bit, looking for a specific Apple Mail restore tool. I knew where all my emails lived, but I thought that Apple would have a specific means for restoring apps like Mail. So I created this mini-tutorial on how to restore Apple Mail from Time Machine simply because I could not find this method elsewhere.
Supposedly, If you attach your Time Machine backup drive, open Apple Mail then launch the Time Machine application, you are presented with historical views of Apple Mail. This did not work for me, the historical views were just blank, so the steps below do not take this approach.
Restoring Your Emails from a Time Machine Backup
Warning: If you have already setup Apple Mail with your accounts and preferences, this will negate ALL your doings.
Note: This process will restore all your email accounts, preferences, passwords, smart mailboxes, etc.
    The How-To
Before loading Time Machine, open the Finder and navigate to Home Folder (username) -> Library. In there will be a folder name “Mail”. Rename it to “Mail (default)” (Select the folder then hit the Return key to rename).
Mount your Time Machine Backup Drive (ahem, plug it in).
Control + Click the Time Machine Application and chose “Browse Other Time Machine disks…”. This, of course, brings up the historical view of your backups.
Go back to your most recent backup (2nd window back) and navigate to Home Folder (username) -> Library. Select the “Mail” folder and click the restore button (bottom right).
Once the restore is completed, open Apple Mail and you will be presented with an import wizard (below). Simply follow through the prompts and you will be good to go.
    That’s it!UPDATE (20-January-2009): After step 4., also restore ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plistThanks Jon C.
If you have multiple mail accounts, you should also restore the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file as well. This will ensure all of your account settings are imported. – Jon C.

Don't try to restore the file; restore the Note. Go in Mail to the mailbox where the note belongs. Enter Time Machine from there and step back until you find the Note.
